More frightening. More intense. More complicated. More
beautiful. More painful. More uncertain.
With motherhood my world became intensified in
innumerable ways.
My anxiety doubled, my fear doubled, my guilt doubled,
my uncertainty doubled, but inevitably I am only really in
control of myself.
The intersubjective relationship between mother and
child is always changing.
My own sense of self is irrevocably altered as my child’s
sense of self develops. My own identity and agency
constantly shifting.

For me, walking is a form
of psychogeography and
relationships of exchange
between individuals and
natural environments.
My painting processes
reinterpret the visible and
invisible stains on landscapes
I encounter that often
allude to troubled histories
and landscape systems in
extremis, of disasters both
natural and manmade.
The elements and motifs in
this new work, Of Their Own
Accord relate to phenomena in nature.
Gravity accords with observed things in nature
that float like algal blooms , ocean detritus and
ash clouds.
True and deep identification with the landscape
that I walk is a strong part of my own
identity.

Our population is ageing and as it does the elderly are
revered less and less by society. Their intrinsic work
ethic, experience, knowledge, insight, traditions, and
deep sense of commitment can be undervalued. As
they approach their twilight years, their mental and
physical strength fades and their very identity begins
to diminish. Banjo is a local born and bred sheep
shearer and in my painting of him, I hope to capture
his unique identity.
