We are already at the end 

of the first month of our 

academic year and I am sure 

that you all can pay witness to

Our sincere appreciation and 

gratitude should go to our 

teachers and learners for 

their hard work in achieving 

this. 

Our high school opened its 

doors but within a few days 

fell victim to cable theft, which 

left us without electricity for 

almost two weeks. 

This posed quite a serious 

challenge with regard to the 

functionality of our server, the 

downloading of books and 

other computer-related issues. 

We are doing our utmost to 

catch up on the backlog of 

issues created by the power 

problems. The cafeteria at the 

high school still needs to be 

changed/upgraded to adhere 

to the original specifications 

of a cafeteria; only after this 

will we be able to make full 

use of this facility. This is a 

priority and as such will only 

be operational in term 2. 

Although the area at the 

netball and tennis courts 

at the high school has been 

allocated for our swimming 

pool, there is a delay with the 

moving of the water pipeline 

and, thus, the pool only forms 

part of phase two (2019). 

The construction of the 

cricket nets (next to the 

cafeteria) at the high school 

is nearing completion now. 

New grass has been planted 

in the area next to the fence 

on the sports field; therefore, 

the lay-out of the athletics 

track for our inter-house 

was only temporarily done. 

The surveyor will be visiting 

the school in due course to 

determine the final lay-out 

of our sports field. Due to 

unforeseen circumstances we 

had to reschedule our official 

opening of the high school 

and this will now take place 

on 19 April 2018. 

I am awaiting the proposed 

plans for the roof/cover of 

our pavilion at the primary 

school in order for me to 

determine the costs 

involved in erecting 

this. 

The cover at 

our pavilion and 

the completion 

of the primary 

school hockey 

field is a priority, 

and I hope to have positive 

feedback regarding this in 

weeks to come. 

Ablution facilities at our 

primary school sports field 

is also an area of great need, 

which we can hopefully 

address in 2018.

perspective. 

HIGHSCHOOL 

HAPPENINGS 

Dear Parent, 

Our main focus is “WHY?” 

A hearty welcome to all new 

staff, learners and parents. After 

all the ceremonies regarding 

moving in to our new home, 

I would like to thank every 

parent, learner, staff member, 

ground staff member and of 

course, Mr Ferdi Niemand for 

the role they played. We are 

now all a part of history. 

Every day we are writing 

a new page in the story of 

Curro Roodeplaat as well as 

in the story of your child. We 

as co-authors should make 

this a best-seller. We have one 

chance - enough said. 

Teaching took place from day 

one - due to proper planning. 

We experienced challenges 

just like any new school, but 

we survived the first month 

of 2018. On Friday, 2 February 

2018, we started using our 

revised timetable that we could 

only change after the 10th 

school day due to a change 

Well done, yet again, on our 

first Inter-house Athletics and 

swimming gala. Donae van 

Deventer deserves a special 

mention as a junior excelling 

at both swimming and 

athletics. Atomic explosion 

was exactly that. Welcome 

to the Grade 8 learners and 

thank you to the prefects on 

a job well done. 

We take cognizance that 

every term is busy but 

remember, we are here for 

academics! Having said that, 

every afternoon your child 

should be on the sports field, 

at a culture venue or an extra 

lesson. 

I hope you and your family 

have a blessed term 1. 

To answer the WHY? Because 

we have to make a difference.

ATHLETICS

HIGH SCHOOL SPORT 

Swimming 

The swimming season began 

with our Inter-house gala on 

January 18th, where Dresden 

out-swam both Jubilee and 

Petra. Congratulations to all the 

swimmers who participated. 

Berno van der Westhuizen 

and Donae van Deventer 

exceeded themselves and 

shone as winners on the day. 

The first gala for the season 

will take place at St Mary’s 

DSG on February 1st. 

Athletics 

Hosting our first athletic Interhouse 

at our new athletics 

track was a yet again a historic 

occasion. 

The special day started with 

the processional marches of 

the different houses: Petra, 

Dresden and Jubilee. 

We would like to congratulate 

Jubilee, who won both the 

athletics day as well as the 

spirit trophy. 

We would also like to 

congratulate the following

PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS 

Athletic inter-house: 

19 January 2018 

The Inter-house was a 

successful meeting with 

colourful teams and lots of 

spirit. All the athletes gave 

their best and are still 

busy improving during the 

practice sessions. 

The trophy for the team 

with the best spirit went 

to the Titans while the 

Gladiators was once again 

the winning athletics team 

with 938 points. 

Our first two friendly 

athletics meetings were 

at Laerskool Danie Malan 

and Northridge Primary. 

The athletes performed 

well and they keep 

practicing hard. 

The final friendly meeting 

has taken place at Curro 

Hazeldean on 6 February. 

Equestrian 

The primary school 

equestrian learners 

participated in the Sanesa 

Core League Qualifier 

1, that took place on 4 

and 5 February. They 

participated in 

different disciplines, 

age groups and 

heights and did 

extremely well. 

Congratulations to: 

• Haylee Duarte 

and Suncatcher 

who participated 

in six classes. They 

received a 1st, 2nd, 

5th, 9th and 11th 

place. 

• Rashelle Duarte 

and Picasso who 

participated in 

five classes. They 


eceived four 1st places 

and one 2nd place. 

• We also have two 

newcomers to Sanesa, 

Shakeira Lee Davey and 

Sulize Hillocks. 

• Shakeira participated 

in three classes and 

received two 2nd 

places and one 6th 

place. 

• Sulize also participated 

in three classes and 

received 1st and 4th 

places. 

There are still three 

qualifiers left before 

Nationals.

Class app 

As of Monday, 19 

February the two phases 

in the primary school will 

make use of different apps 

to communicate important 

class information to you. 

The Foundation phase 

will make use of the 

Appletree-app. 

Procedure: download 

the app on your cell 

phone from Playstore 

or appStore. Find your 

child’s class according to 

the name of the class that 

will be communicated to 

you by the class educator. 

Thereafter, type in the 

access code which will 

also be communicated 

by the class educator. 

You will then be part 

of the class group and 

will be able to receive 

information. 

The Intersen phase will 

make use of the Remind: 

School Communicationapp. 

Procedure: download 

the app on your cell 

phone from Playstore 

or appStore. Find “Join 

a class” and “Enter your 

class code” and then 

enter your child’s register 

educator’s unique code. 

These codes will be 

communicated to you 

through a letter.
