Farm, 70 Alice Street, Rosehill on Sunday March 

11 celebrating Parramatta’s Indigenous heritage 

and its fascinating story of country. 

This family-friendly festival celebrates Parramatta’s namesake, 

the eel, and its significance to the local Darug people 

known as the Burramattagal who have gathered for thousands 

of years during eel season to feast, trade and share their culture. 

Elizabeth Farm will come alive with a full program of music 

and song along with traditional and contemporary activities 

from 10am to 4pm offering visitors a unique opportunity to reconnect 

with this hugely historical property. 

Visitors can share stories of the Parramatta River, learn Darug 

language in sessions throughout the day from Murru Mittigar’s 

cultural leaders, Leanne Watson and Rhiannon Wright and enjoy 

the ever popular Boomerang painting inspired by themes 

from the Eel Totem. 

Step inside the colonial homestead and learn more about the 

connections between the original owners of Elizabeth Farm, 

John and Elizabeth Macarthur, and the local Indigenous people 

with curator Dr Scott Hill. A complimentary return shuttle bus 

service to and from Elizabeth Farm, provided by Sydney Bus

LANE COE MP Anthony Roberts launched his new mobile electorate office 

in Lane Cove Plaza last week. 

The mobile oce replaces Mr Robert’s former 

oce on ictoria Road, Gladesville, which 

was located in an oce block that was recently 

demolished to make way for residential apartments. 

Mr Roberts hopes to open a new oce on ictoria 

Road, Gladesville, later this year. 

The mobile electorate oce is equipped to 

carry out the functions of an established electorate 

oce, which includes constituent interviews. 

My staff and I look forward to meeting constituents 

at the mobile electorate oce, which 

has a table with valuable information about local 

and government events and initiatives, Mr 

Roberts said. 

It will tour Hunters Hill, Gladesville and Putney 

in coming weeks and Mr Roberts will announce 

upcoming times and venues in The Weekly 

Times.

2017 Community Building Partnership Program. 

I am so proud that our Government has been able to 

support so many worthy organisations in our electorate.

volunteering, sport, and especially education.

The Catholic Parish of Saint Michaels, Steve Conlon has 

obtained $52,954 for their School Hall Refurbishment.

Hunters Hill District Hockey Club receive $20,500 for the 

Upgrading of their Centre Playing Surface Fencing.

public’s money.

and as a ratepayer in my 

eighties see your help. 

I attach a letter I have sent to 

Ryde’s new General Manager 

Mr George Dedes as follows: 

For the last two days I have 

attempted to contact Suez(?) 

to book a clean-up. 

Last Friday I made two 

phone calls, and in spite being 

assured my call was very 

important to them, no one answered 

for 12 and 10 minutes 

respectively. 

I tried again this morning 

with the same results. 

I then phoned the Council to 

ask for some help, and spoke 

to a polite young lady, Emma, 

who told me there is nothing 

the Council can do to help; it is 

a very busy number, I just have 

to keep phoning and wait. 

Clearly we, the ratepayers 

of Ryde, have a problem here, 

something you, the General 

Manager with considerable 

clout shoul easil fi 

It seems to me a simple solution 

would be for Suez – if 

they are really so busy or do 

not hae enouh sta to 

install an answering service 

where callers can leave a telephone 

number and can be 

called back in quieter times. 

In the meantime I hope 

someone there can help me 

with my immediate problem 

promptly.

The festival’s hero dog 

lantern has been designed 

by Chinese Australian artist 

Song Ling and sits proudly at 

the side of the Sydney Opera

This masterpiece was created 

by 18 skilled workers

and more than 200m of fabric. 

Now in its third year, the 

Lunar Lanterns exhibition 

features the work of Claudia 

Chan Shaw along with some 

of Australia’s most exciting

Fan Dongwang, Laurens Tan, 

Guo Jian, Tianli Zu and Qian 

Jian Hua. 

Designed by Asian-Australian

NELSON PARADE’s contaminated site will be cleaned up 

under a process being personally overseen by Lane Cove 

MP Anthony Roberts. 

In an exclusive interview with The Weekly Times, Mr Roberts said 

cabinet ministers have been briefed on the waste issue and he 

appreciates residents’ concerns to have the site cleaned as soon 

as possible. 

“I understand their frustrations and that previous 

Labor governments have done nothing,” he 

said. 

“I have been making 

deliberations through the 

established process to 

find a solution but this is 

a very complex issue that 

involves multiple government 

departments, numerous 

legislation and three 

levels of government. 

“It also requires considerable 

discussion. 

“But I want to reassure 

residents I have been 

working tirelessly to put 

this process in place and 

I look forward to a partnership 

with Hunters Hill 

Council and the Federal 

Government. 

“I will also arrange experts 

to brief residents on 

the issue and the plans for 

remediation because what 

we have now is a process 

to deliver, and will deliver, 

a successful remediation.” 

Mr Roberts blasted recent 

protests aimed at 

forcing the government to 

act and said they have only 

served to lower property 

values in Hunters Hill. 

“Slogans like ‘Decontaminate 

Hunters Hill’ are 

not helpful as they suggest 

the residents of Hunters 

Hill wish to contaminate 

somewhere else,” he said. 

“The fact is the soil is 

not more contaminated 

than other soil around the 

harbour and it is not good 

for protestors to start talking 

down property values 

in Hunters Hill over a site 

that has material that can 

be safely transported to a 

safe storage facility man- 

aged by the federal government”. 

Mr Roberts also delivered 

a personal appeal to 

the protestors. 

“I urge you and I beg you 

to stop kicking own goals 

with negative slogans and 

following the destructive 

path of short term political 

headlines that will only 

push a solution further 

away. 

“This negative publicity 

harms the entire community 

in Hunters Hill and I urge 

them to respect your fellow 

residents and respect 

the process that will deliver 

a successful outcome.”

was launched on Eastwood Plaza last Saturday with a 

colourful opening ceremony. 

Three Members of Parliament, eight Ryde City Councillors including 

the mayor and distinguished guests were invited by Festival 

chairman Hugh Lee OAM to take part in the opening ceremony 

and cutting the ribbon with a multitude of scissors. 

The opening ceremony preceded the popular annual opening 

event of the festival cooking competition which this year was ultimately 

won by Parramatta MP Dr Geoff Lee.

majority of the waste 

collected into plastic 

pellets which can be 

moulded into a variety 

of new products, like 

pens, pencil cases, 

picture frames, garden 

and school benches, 

picnic tables, and even 

school playgrounds,” 

Dr Patel said. 

“Putney Dental Surgery 

is now a collection 

point for your oral 

care waste and we 

encourage all readers

Times to drop off any 

brand of waste oral 

care products: toothbrushes 

(not electric 

toothbrushes), plastic 

packaging, empty 

toothpaste tubes, 

oss containers and 

mouthwash bottles, 

for recycling. 

“Our collection box is 

in the foyer of the dental 

practice and can be 

accessed during our 

working hours. 

“Every time someone 

brings in used 

toothbrushes or other 

oral care items, Putney 

Dental Surgery 

will offer a complimentary 

toothbrush and 

make a donation of 

two cents per item to 

the Cancer Council of 

Australia.” 

It is estimated that 30 

million toothbrushes 

and 70 million toothpaste 

tubes are used 

in Australia each year, 

equating to about 350 

tonnes of landfill waste 

annually. 

The team at Terra- 

Cycle are aware of the 

dangers of incinerating 

these products 

and have introduced 

the plastic pellet initiative 

as an environmentally 

friendly alternative. 

“The standard toothbrush 

is made of a 

hard plastic handle 

and a set of soft nylon 

bristles and most 

come in plastic packages,” 

the team said. 

“These petroleum 

products do not biodegrade 

and release 

toxic chemicals if incinerated. 

“Possibly every 

toothbrush ever made, 

still exists somewhere 

on our planet, in some 

form.” 

Dr Patel of Putney 

recommends that 

readers “brush at least 

twice a day with a soft 

toothbrush” and replace 

it every three to 

four months.

95th birthday celebration for Eastwood’s Giacomo

“It is my view the sale of the site

worst case scenario, replaced by 

high density residential development.” 

Built in 1913 by the Metropolitan 

Board of Water Supply and Sewerage, 

the reservoir supplied water 

to the locality until 1965 and was 

disconnected from the system in 

1994.

and then dedicate it to Council to 

be used for public recreation and 

suitable adaptive reuse of the heritage 

structure.” 

He said there are two primary 

schools and limited recreational 

space within the vicinity of the reservoir,

up Mount Everest 

A 25 year old Putney actor will be juggling her way up Mount 

Everest next month. 

Actor Debbie Neilson will be in Nepal for six weeks before her 

arrival in Europe and a debut season in Russia for the World Cup 

finals. 

She has just starred 

in a local production 

of the“Titanic Experience” 

and directed the 

play “Santa Photo” which 

has been shortlisted for 

an award at the Peoples 

Choice Festival. 

“I’m looking forward to 

juggling up Mount Everest 

and although I’ll probably 

only get about ten meters 

up the mountain I’ll still 

claim I climbed it, juggling,” 

she said. 

“When in Nepal I will also 

be teaching English, juggling, 

singing and dance 

and well as putting on a 

little play with the primary 

school students over 

there.” 

For Debbie Neilson the 

Nepal experience is a 

world away from her recent 

Edwardian experience. 

“Beyond Cinema put on 

the “Titanic Experience” on 

Sydney Harbour in January 

and I was lucky enough to 

be cast as Rose. 

“It was a British production 

and there were 800 

passengers and everyone 

was dressed up.” 

Now rugged up for a winter 

in Nepal, she hopes to 

learn more about the Nepalese 

way of life. 

“I’m particularly looking 

forward to learning more 

about Nepalese spirituality 

because we get so caught 

up in the materialist world 

here. 

“It is all very well giving 

money to third world countries 

but this time I want to 

give something of myself, 

from my heart. 

“For me, a successful 

trip will be one where I can 

make a positive impact 

through my skills.”

FRANK Ifield has been a well-known Australian name in show

Concord Rebuild 

Trumpeted 

NSW Health department ocials have begun efforts 

to create some excitement around Concord 

Hospitals 41 redevelopment. 

Two “community consultation sessions” were held 

earlier this month at the hospital, providing an opportunity 

for attendees to peruse the redevelopment masterplan 

and address questions to the project team. 

Concord Hospital and Sydney Local Health District 

has been working with Health Infrastructure to progress 

detailed plans to construct a new clinical services building. 

The hospital’s acting general manager, Dr Steevie 

Chan said early and enabling works are underway to 

prepare for the biggest upgrade of Concord Hospital 

in decades. 

”It’s exciting to say the redevelopment is here,” Dr 

Chan said. 

“As we welcome the project team, vacate buildings 

and relocate staff we continue our consultations with 

patients staff and community about how the new services 

will look.” 

Joining the team onsite will be Kirsty Chapman, Deborah 

Jenkins and Carly Mcloughlin, who will work with 

executives, clinicians, patients, community and the 

Health Infrastructure team led by Project Director, Hayley 

Bell. 

The redevelopment will provide additional inpatient 

capacity and outpatient services for the growing local 

community. 

It will include a new aged care, complex care and 

rehabilitation service including rehabilitation gyms, assessment 

and therapy areas; and a new comprehensive 

cancer care centre with improved access and dedicated 

drop-off one for patients 

The enhancements will also deliver a new hospital logistics 

system along with new rehabilitation and ambulatory 

care services. 

The masterplan also provides for the nation’s first 

Defence orce entre of cellence continuing the 

hospital’s long and proud history of providing specialist 

services to veterans. 

But the upgrades may still be several years off with 

NSW Budget papers revealing anticipated completion 

of the project in 2023 and just $10 million allocated for 

2017-18 for the project’s early phases.

We quickly explained 

to Tim how 

he can get ahead, 

without changing 

banks. 

The strategy exploits 

the fact that a 

couple of banks will 

apply their ‘owneroccupied’ 

interest 

rate to Tim’s investment 

loan, as long as 

his owner-occupied 

property is offered as 

security (hardly anyone 

knows this, but 

now you do, as well 

as those you now 

tell). 

Of course, what 

makes a loan tax deductible 

is purely its 

original purpose. 

We refinanced his 

investment loan, using 

his home as the 

security. With a lifetime 

package discount 

of 2.08 per 

cent, he gets his 

investment loan at 

3.59 per cent. 

We left his small 

home loan at CBA, 

which is on 3.90 per 

cent, but substituted 

the security, so this 

home loan is now secured 

by his investment 

property. 

This loan remains 

at the ‘owner-occupied’ 

rate, since 

CBA (and most other 

banks) classify and 

price loans based 

on ‘purpose’, rather 

than which property 

is used as the security. 

So now Tim has 

saved a whopping 

1.20 per cent on his 

$1.2m investment 

loan, so he’s better 

off by $14,400 

per annum. Whack. 

And he still gets to 

conveniently use his 

CBA offset, which is 

still attached to his 

home loan, which 

hasn’t moved.

Boys Junior Rugby 

League Club will be 

held on Saturday 

April 21 at Balmain 

Bowling Club from 

1pm. 

The Coppers - 

founded in 1938 - 

have a proud history 

in the Balmain Junior 

League. 

The sky blue and 

whites won Club 

Championship trophies 

in 1974-75-76 

and ‘77 and over the 

years a large number 

of players graduated 

to the Balmain 

grade ranks. 

These included internationals 

Fred de 

Belin, Norm Pope, 

Jack Sinclair, Don 

Furner, Lloyd Martin, 

Wayne Pearce 

and Steve Roach 

and former Quensland 

rep Norm 

McLean. 

Balmain Police 

Boys JRLFC disbanded 

in 1949 but 

re-formed in 1966 

when ex-player Sgt 

George Stone was 

transferred to the 

club as Secretary- 

Supervisor. 

George along with 

childhood friends 

Keith Aggett and 

Tony Angelini represented 

the Coppers 

as juniors and 

would later become 

top administrators. 

Keith was a great 

stalwart of Ryde 

Eastwood Leagues 

Club while George 

(chairman) and Tony 

were long serving 

directors of Balmain 

Football & Leagues
