I Remember You, Frank Ifield
FRANK Ifield has been a well-known Australian name in show
business for over 5 years.
His career began at the
age of 14 in 1952 following
his appearance on
2GB’s Amateur Hour and
he made his first records
for EMI the following year
when he was only 15.
Live performances followed
and he was regularly
on Sydney radio. When
television began in Australia
in late 1956, he was the
first to have his own music
show ampfire avourites
on Channel 9. Travelling
to the United Kingdom in
late 1959 to try his luck,
he was soon on television
there, in the theatre and
in the recording studio at
EMI’s Abbey Road.
In 1962, he achieved international
success with his
recording of “I Remember
You”.
It topped the charts in the
UK, as did his next two
records, making him the
first artist in Britain to have
three number one hits in
a row. Along the way, he
has done much more, and
continues to be active to
this day.
Now 80 years of age,
rank reminisces about
his long career and about
STRICT heritage protection will be enforced on the historic Dellina
City Of Ryde Mayor
The Weekly Times
“the highest protection
possible” will be
enforced at the site,
parts of which are
subject to a Land and
Last Sydney derby at Allianz Stadium
SYDNEY FC will round off a hectic schedule this Sunday with the highly
anticipated Sydney derby - taking on rivals Western Sydney Wanderers.
It will be the last derby
at the venue before the
NSW Government carries
out its controversial
and costly knock-down
and rebuild to bring it
up to required standards.
The last time the sides
met, in December, Sydney
thumped its opponents
5-nil.
The cross-city rivals’
encounter is always an
awesome spectacle,
with their respective armies
of passionate fans
taking their place either
end of the pitch.
The Weekly Times is
giving three readers
the chance to win a
double pass for Sunday’s
Sydney FC aim to
pull off a Shanghai
surprise
LT empty-handed
after a 2-0 defeat to
Suwon Bluewings in
its hampions
League opener last
week Sydney will be
determined to claim all
three points in its second
encounter, away
to cashed-up Shanghai
Shenhua.
The Sky Blues touched
down in China on Sunday
ahead of the match
tonight (Wednesday) at
Hongkou Stadium.
lashing their cash for
some celebrity acquisitions
has achieved very
little for Shanghai, which
will be feeling the weight
of expectation from its
fans to bring home the
goods against Sydney.
They had signed Argentine
strike Carlos
Tevez, paying him
$1m in pocket money
per week and also appointed
former Tottenham
star Gus Poyet as
coach.
On both accounts, the
acquisitions bore no
fruit. Tevez was such
a disappointment, he
ultimately was left out
of the squad for the
hinese up inal last
November, while Poyet
threw the towel in midway
through 2017 after
only managing a string
of very ordinary results
on the pitch.
Securing former Newcastle
and Chelsea striker
Demba Ba, looked to
be a worthwhile venture
in 2016 - he netted 14
goals in 18 matches
before breaking his leg,
then disappearing, never
to return.
But Sydney fullback,
Luke Wilkshire
certainly isn’t in China
to help Shanghai out of
the happiness-starved
predicament they find
themselves in.
“A win — three points
is what we’ve come here
for,” Wilkshire said.
W-League Title
Eludes Sky Blues –
Again!
MELBOURNE City
have claimed a thirdstraight
estfield -
League title, defeating
Sydney -0 in the
08 Grand inal on the
weekend at Allianz Stadium.
Both sides struggled
to maintain possession
in a frenetic opening,
but City grabbed the
lead 10 minutes before
half-time through
a long-range strike to
ess ishlock after the
referee missed what appeared
to be a foul on
Sydney’s keeper.
Sydney fought
their way back into the
contest after the break
and forced City keeper
Lydia Williams to pull
off a series of crucial
saves.
But the Skye Blues’
inability to convert their
chances proved costly
with Jodie Taylor’s
close-range strike sealing
the win for City with
15 minutes remaining.
A distraught Teresa
Polias, one of Sydney’s
stand-out performers in
the contest, spoke of
her pride for her Sydney
teammates in a tearful
tribute to her side’s
achievements this season,
which saw the Sky
Blues make the Grand
inal after losing their
opening three games of
the campaign.
“It’s really tough. I’m
so proud of my team.
There’s a lot of stories
in our team,” the Sydney
captain told o
Sports.
or us to have done
what we did this season
I’m so incredibly
proud.
“I’m sorry to the people
– there’s a few people
on the sideline that
we didn’t quite do it for
today, our friends and
families. But I’m so incredibly
proud of this
team.”
Sydney coach
Ante Juric suggests the
occasion may have got
to his players.
“I don’t think we
Teresa Polias
played to our potential,”
he said.
“Maybe the occasion,
maybe the 10 games
undefeated, maybe a
bit of fatigue setting in.
“They were a little bit
nervous, the passes
weren’t hitting target,
so things like that.”
The absence of Caitlin
oord didn’t help
matters and Sydney
sorely missed the Matildas
striker’s attacking
prowess.
“She’s a super player
but I thought Leena
(Khamis) did a solid job
and Remy (Siemsen)
when she came on,”
Juric said.
historic cottage - a
former Edwardian era
hospital - will be bulldozed.
“Now I’ve been notified
have arranged
for rangers to go to
this site and for our
legal team to let the
private certifier know
in no uncertain terms
that demolition of the
cottage is unlawful,”
he said.
“The property has
been heritage listed
by our council and
has the highest possible
protection under
law.”
Mayor Laxale had
attempted to heritage
list the entire site
a few years ago when
a development application
for a childcare
centre was lodged.
“They took us to the
Land and Environment
Court to challenge
our heritage orders
and consent was
granted by the Land
and Environment
Court for adaptive use
for childcare.
“There were, however
by the court and
I want to assure our
ratepayers that demolition
of the historic
cottage has been opposed
and will continue
to be opposed.”
Mayor Laxale
thanked locals who
reported the development
to The Weekly
Times.
“I strongly encourage
everyone to remain
vigilant, as our
rangers will be and
to report any damage
to this cottage to me,
personally.”
Trumpeted
NSW Health department ocials have begun efforts
to create some excitement around Concord
Hospitals 41 redevelopment.
Two “community consultation sessions” were held
earlier this month at the hospital, providing an opportunity
for attendees to peruse the redevelopment masterplan
and address questions to the project team.
Concord Hospital and Sydney Local Health District
has been working with Health Infrastructure to progress
detailed plans to construct a new clinical services building.
The hospital’s acting general manager, Dr Steevie
Chan said early and enabling works are underway to
prepare for the biggest upgrade of Concord Hospital
in decades.
”It’s exciting to say the redevelopment is here,” Dr
Chan said.
“As we welcome the project team, vacate buildings
and relocate staff we continue our consultations with
patients staff and community about how the new services
will look.”
Joining the team onsite will be Kirsty Chapman, Deborah
Jenkins and Carly Mcloughlin, who will work with
executives, clinicians, patients, community and the
Health Infrastructure team led by Project Director, Hayley
Bell.
The redevelopment will provide additional inpatient
capacity and outpatient services for the growing local
community.
It will include a new aged care, complex care and
rehabilitation service including rehabilitation gyms, assessment
and therapy areas; and a new comprehensive
cancer care centre with improved access and dedicated
drop-off one for patients
The enhancements will also deliver a new hospital logistics
system along with new rehabilitation and ambulatory
care services.
The masterplan also provides for the nation’s first
Defence orce entre of cellence continuing the
hospital’s long and proud history of providing specialist
services to veterans.
But the upgrades may still be several years off with
NSW Budget papers revealing anticipated completion
of the project in 2023 and just $10 million allocated for
2017-18 for the project’s early phases.
