“A lot of times donations come from parents,
but these homemade dog treats came
from kids,” Principal Tim Buss said. “It’s a
great effort. I think opportunities like this
help students gain a better understanding
of what it means to serve others.”
“The timing was perfect for us to do
something for dogs,” shared Assistant
Principal Malissa Parker. “I want the kids
to have a hands-on experience where they
are doing something, not just donating, but
participating in a service activity.”
Leadership conference for safe
driving offered to students
The Missouri Department of Transportation
[MoDOT] Highway Safety and Traffic
Division, in partnership with the Cape
Girardeau Police Department, is offering
a valuable opportunity to all Missouri high
school students – a traffic safety leadership
training conference, which they can attend
in either June or July, called TRACTION.
Traffic crashes remain one of the leading
causes of death and serious injury for Missouri
teens, which is why police departments
and MoDOT are on a mission to
help save lives.
TRACTION is a three-day training program
for 12 students and two advisers,
designed to empower youth to take an active
role in decreasing unsafe driving habits like
driver inattention, impaired driving and
encouraging teens to buckle up. The program
aims to provide attendees with the motivation,
information, skills and support necessary
to develop a plan of action that addresses
those unsafe driving habits through events
and activities to be implemented within their
school and communities.
An action plan will be completed for
each school and community to implement
the following year. Generally, students
from Student Council, SADD, TREND,
FCCLA, or any other school leadership
type program would be the perfect individuals
for TRACTION.
The 2018 Conference dates and locations
are: June 3-5 in Springfield, July 22-24 in
Cape Girardeau and July 26-28 in Columbia.

Teachers earn national
certifications
Several teachers who work in the Parkway
and Rockwood school districts recently
achieved National Board Certification. The
National Board for Professional Teaching
Standards [NBPTS] improves teaching and
student learning. National Board Certified
teachers are highly accomplished educators
who meet high and rigorous standards.
Like board-certified doctors and accountants,
teachers who achieve National
Board Certification have done so through
intensive study, expert evaluation, selfassessment
and peer review. NBPTS offers
25 certificates that cover a variety of subject
areas and student development levels.
A National Board Teaching certificate is
valid for 10 years with the opportunity to
renew certification.
The certified teachers from Rockwood
are [from Eureka High] John Arata, Jeremy
Knudtson and Sara Schroeder; [from Lafayette
High] Liz Morningstar, Patty Mabie,
Lauren Sakowski and John Deken; and [from
Rockwood Summit High] Sarah Moonier.
