Khoury's
Wine of the Month
Red Schooner
From the Wagner Family of Wines comes
a Malbec that endures a great adventure
long before it is ever bottled. You see,
the rules of labeling a wine state that
the winemaker must include things such
as where the grapes were grown i.e.,
Viticulture Area or Appellation of Origin.
The label must also contain a “Country
of Origin” as per the U.S. Customs and
Border Protection. What tends to be
very vague though, in some wines, is the
vintage date or rather the date that the
wine was bottled. Society has led us to
believe that “wine gets better with age”.
For many wines this is true but for most
them, NOW is the time to enjoy!
Red Schooner grapes are grown in the
Andes Mountains and then shipped,
chilled, to the Napa Valley where the
Wagner family then produces the wine
by using the same methods that they use
to produce Caymus Cabernet. This long
boat ride extends the wine making
process for this juice and therefore
becomes a major factor in the result.
Red Schooner Voyage 5 is made
with the grapes of the fifth long trek
from South American to California
and while the wine maker see this
as a 2014 Vintage, the consumer
sees it as the 5th bottling of a
successful mix of import grape
and domestic style! With a
tangled scent of plums and
cherries, this wine is bold and
dominant.
own bottle tonight!

A true Nevadan all the way down to her roots,
Ellen Irene Bliss Tervort, was born and raised
in Ruth Nevada. Her parents were from Fallon
Nevada and there are relatives scattered all over
Nevada. She started drawing at an early age
and then, as a young mother, living in isolated
rural ranch land, she drew cartoon characters
to entertain her children. Her influences and
appreciation of art further developed when a
friend from high school put a paintbrush in her
hand and her husband gave her an oil painting
kit for Christmas in 1962. Now she works in oils
and charcoal pencils.
Ellen’s inspiration comes from her life
experiences in Nevada wild lands, with her
husband working and living on a large ranch
in Lovelock Nevada and later moving to Sierra
Valley on an extension of that ranch, located
near Loyalton California 35 miles from Reno.
Always living and loving the cowboy way of life,
Ellen’s unique light-filled paintings are focused
on majestic landscape, authentic western
culture, portraiture, horses, ranch work, and
Nevada wildlife. Ellen’s extensive career as an
artist includes many portrait commissions of
dogs, prize horses, and people.
Guinness and Onion Soup
with Irish Cheddar Crouton
Recipe & photo courtesy of foodnetwork.com
Ingredients:
• 1 cup whole milk
• 1 large egg
• 1 cup frozen chopped spinach,
defrosted and squeezed dry
• 1/3 cup loosely packed
chopped chives
Toppings:
• 4 fried eggs
• 2 cups prepared corned beef hash
• 1 cup flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• Kosher salt and black pepper
• 1 cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese
• 1-2 tablespoons butter
• 2 TBSP chopped chives
Preparation:
Blend the milk, egg, spinach, chives, flour, baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
and a few grinds of black pepper in a blender on medium-high, scraping down sides
occasionally, until mixed and bright green. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the cheese.
Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat and add about 1 teaspoon of butter to
the pan, heat through until foaming subsides. Ladle about 1/4 cup of the batter onto
the skillet; use the back of your ladle or a spoon to spread it slightly. Pour 1 or 2 more
pancakes, taking care to keep them evenly spaced apart. Cook until the top is set and
starting to bubble, and the undersides are browned and crisp at the edges, 2 to 3
minutes. Flip and cook another 2 minutes on the second side adjusting the heat if the
cakes are browning before the cakes fully set. Serve warm. Repeat with the remaining
batter, makes 8 to 10 pancakes.
To serve pancakes, transfer 2 pancakes to each plate, top with 1/2 cup
corned beef hash, a fried egg and a sprinkling of chives.
Ingredients:
• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 5 cloves minced garlic
• 8 cups thinly sliced onions
• Gray salt
• 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves,
chopped
• 1/4 cup sherry vinegar
• 1 1/2 cups dark beer
(recommended: Guinness)
• 6 cups beef stock
• 6 slices country bread cut
1/2-inch thick, toasted
• 1/2 pound Irish Cheddar,
sliced thin
Preparation:
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add garlic and cook briefly to release
aroma. Add onions, season with salt and cook for about 5 minutes stirring often.
Reduce heat to low and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the
onions are golden brown. Add the thyme, vinegar, and beer. Reduce beer by half and
add the beef stock. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 more minutes.
Preheat the broiler. Transfer soup to an ovenproof serving dish or individual ovenproof
soup bowls. Top with toasted bread slices and sliced Cheddar. Broil until cheese melts
and starts to brown slightly. Serve piping hot.
Chocolate Stout Cupcakes
Corned Beef & Cabbage Egg Rolls
with Homemade Beer Mustard
Recipe and photo courtesy of cookingandbeer.com
Ingredients:
• 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa, plus
more for dusting finished cupcakes
• 2 cups sugar
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• Pinch fine salt
• 1 bottle stout beer
(recommended: Guinness)
• 1 stick butter, melted
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 3 large eggs
• 3/4 cup sour cream
• 1 (8-oz) package cream cheese,
softened at room temperature
• 3/4 to 1 cup heavy cream
• 1 (1-lb) box confectioners' sugar
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cocoa, sugar,
flour, baking soda, and salt. In another medium mixing bowl, combine the stout,
melted butter, and vanilla. Beat in eggs, 1 at time. Mix in sour cream until thoroughly
combined and smooth. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
Lightly grease 24 muffin tins. Divide the batter equally between muffin tins, filling
each 3/4 full. Bake for about 12 minutes and then rotate the pans. Bake another 12 to
13 minutes until risen, nicely domed, and set in the middle but still soft and tender.
Cool before turning out. To make the icing: In a medium bowl with a hand mixer, beat
the cream cheese on medium speed until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the heavy
cream. On low speed, slowly mix in the confectioners' sugar until incorporated and
smooth. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use. Icing can be made
several hours ahead and kept covered and chilled.
Top each cupcake with a heap of frosting and dust with cocoa.
Ingredients:
BEER MUSTARD
• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
• 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
• 1 cup brown ale beer
• 2/3 cup honey mustard
• 2 tablespoons sour cream
Preparation:
CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE EGG ROLLS
• Canola or vegetable oil (for frying)
• 1 lb deli-style corned beef, sliced
into 2-inch x 1/2-inch strips
• 1 1/2 cups shredded green cabbage
• 8-10 oz sharp cheddar cheese,
sliced into 2-inch x 1/2 inch strips
• 12 egg rolls wrappers
• Egg wash (1 egg whisked with 1T water)
Beer Mustard: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter. Add the mustard seeds, onion
powder and beer. Whisk to combine and simmer for 10 minutes or until the beer has
reduced by half. Whisk in the mustard and continue cooking for about 4 minutes.
Remove from heat and transfer to a container to cool. Once cool, whisk in the sour cream.
Cover and place the beer mustard in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
Corned Beef and Cabbage Egg Rolls: Pour the oil into a large pot or dutch oven until it
reaches about an inch up the side of the pot. Heat it over medium heat to a temperature
of 375 degrees F. While the oil is heating up, prepare your egg rolls. Starting with 1
egg roll wrapper, place a few slices of corned beef, 1 slice of cheese, and about a TBSP
or two of cabbage onto the lower 1/3 of the wrapper. Roll the egg roll up by rolling the
ingredients into the wrapper away from you, fold in the sides about halfway through the
roll, and then continue rolling until completely in tact.
Taking a bit of egg wash, seal where necessary. Place it on a plate, and continue with
the remaining egg roll wrappers. Once the oil is hot, add one of the egg rolls and fry for
about 1 min. on each side. Do this first step with only one egg roll so that you know the
oil is at the right temperature. Remove the egg roll from the oil, and transfer it to a plate
that has been lined with a paper towel. Continue this step for the rest of the egg rolls.
At this point, you may add 2-3 egg rolls at a time. Just make sure to not overcrowd
the pan. Serve the egg rolls immediately with homemade beer mustard, and enjoy!

LANE DIEDRICHSEN
- Owner of Pizza Barn -
This week, I was able to sit down with
Lane Diedrichsen. Lane has owned and
operated Pizza Barn, at the Sunrise
Shopping Center, for about thirty-five
years…and boy, does he have some
great experiences!
Did you know that if Lane’s brother had
been accepted into dentistry school,
your kids may have never been able
to ride the mechanical horse in the
lobby while waiting for a slice? True
story! Tell us about it, Lane! “Well, what got me into
the pizza business was actually my twin brother. We
grew up in the Reno area and our job, while attending
the University of Nevada, was working at a pizza chain
called Straw Hat. He was getting a BS in biology
because he wanted to be a dentist, as my father was,
and he wanted to take over my father’s practice when
my he retired. But what happened was, when he got
through with school he never got accepted into the
actual dental school. It’s just hard to get in. So here he
is, freshly graduated from UNR with a degree and he
can’t get into dental school. He wasn’t sure what to
do. So, in the meantime, he decided to shift towards
a business degree while looking at becoming a shift
supervisor at the pizza place he was working at. As
this was happening (1976/77) in Fallon Nevada, there
was a guy with a piece of property who wanted to
put in a shopping center. And he wanted to put in
a legitimate pizza restaurant because back in those
days it was very rare to see chain restaurants in centers
like that; everyone wanted mom and pop shops. So
he went to everyone in the business within the Reno/
Truckee area, asking them to put in a pizza restaurant.
Nobody had any desire to go out to Fallon. Finally, our
boss from Straw Hat drove out there.
He was impressed with the area but
he already owned three restaurants
in Reno, Sparks, and Carson City
and just couldn’t manage another,
especially that far out of Reno…but
he told him that if he couldn’t find
somebody he might have someone
who could run a successful pizza
business. He took my brother out
to lunch and talked to him about
opening up his own place. So we all went out there
and built the first Pizza Barn in Fallon, in 1978. It
went very well! In the meantime, I was teaching 8thgrade
history at Sparks Jr. High School for two years
before they gave me a call and asked if I wanted to
join the family business because we’re thinking about
expanding! Fast forward about three years and they
wanted to build another restaurant. They didn’t want
to go to the Reno/Sparks area because it was too
“big” and already had a lot going on. So, it came
down to either Elko or the Minden/Gardnerville area.
And sure enough at that time, the Sunrise Shopping
Center was being planned; we caught wind of it and
contacted them about putting in a pizza business.
They told us they already had a commitment from
Round Table Pizza who had already put down a $2,500
deposit. But when it finally came time to break ground
on the shopping center, Round Table Pizza restaurants
backed out to build a store in the Spanish Springs area
of Sparks. So, they ate their deposit and the owners
of the shopping center contacted us about moving in.
We said yes and opened up in March of ’83.”
Yes, that’s close to 35 years of slinging pies. What’s
Pizza Barns secret to their longevity? “if you make a
22 www.EverythingElko.com \ March 2018
eally good pizza, you’re going to do really well. But
we’ve always had this niche of being a family. We
didn’t want to have any gaming in here. We didn’t
really want to have a full liquor license; we wanted to
be a family restaurant. And that’s what really helped
us get established. If by word of mouth, people like
you, the roots will get planted pretty deep. We’ve
had to stay focused on what we wanted to be. We
never wanted to be the “cheap” $5.99 pizza place;
we leave that to someone else. We don’t deliver
quick and speedy, no we take care of our families.
That’s been our forte.”
That’s fantastic and much needed in our community!
But I now had two questions for Lane. After running
this business for so long, question one… do you still
enjoy doing what you do? “I actually enjoy working in
the restaurant; I love the hands-on thing. Yesterday,
I was rolling dough and our beer deliverer came
in and he said it was really weird seeing the owner
rolling the dough. I don’t just want to be the owner
who comes in and does the banking, and sits at a
desk…I actually enjoy working on Saturday nights
with the kids (who keep me young). In any type of
business, if you’re a small business owner, to own it
you’ve got to live it! People would come up to me,
especially in the beginning, and tell me how they
wish they could be their own boss; it must be great
to go out and play golf every day if you wanted to.
And it’s true, I could go out and play golf five days a
week. But, if I did that, I wouldn’t have been here for
thirty years! You have to keep your fingers on it. And
as long as I love coming down here and working, I
will.” Question two…do you even still like pizza ?
Aren’t you sick of it? “Friday is Tina (Lane’s wife) and
mine’s pizza night! I’ve never gotten tired of pizza; I
could eat pizza every day! And probably drink beer
every day too.”
Chicago is famous for their pizza. New York is
famous for its pizza. But what is it like being in the
pizza game in good ol’ Elko, Nevada? ” I love how
caring the people of Elko are. But there was a guy
who opened up a business next-door to us in the
shopping center. And I noticed that he had been
here for like a year and a half, going on two years,
but he still had the Idaho plates on his car. He and
his wife never really committed to Elko. He would
always just say he’s waiting to see what happens and
if the business takes off. But he never made the total
investment in Elko; he never moved here and made
Elko his home. And they’re out of business now.
If you don’t invest in the community, don’t be
surprised if the community doesn’t invest in you.”
So, here’s a little behind the scenes Anthony Around
Town fact. I always end my time with people by asking
them if they have anything they would like to specifically
share with you (the readers) that we haven’t already
talked about. Most people say thank you to the Elko
people or give one last
encouragement. And Lane
did give a big thank you to
our area for its patronage of
Pizza Barn for all of these
years. However, Lane also had
one more thing he and his
wife would like to share with
you all. “We love to go surfing
with our golden retrievers!
And we have gotten to the
point where our dogs have become apart of our brand
and apart of the Pizza Barn family!”
Gosh, I wish I had those smooth moves! Thank you for
your time with us, Lane! Great guy, great pizza , great
stories…great dogs!
ANDY BELL
- A True Outdoors Man -
Few may know this about me (Anthony)
but I use to be quite the hunter back
in my day. Yes, I was a rifleman who
enjoyed a good game hunt, more than
anyone. I remember waking up early,
rubbing the ol’ sleep out of my eyes,
grabbing my weapon and heading
downstairs to shoot some wild beasts.
The rush of pulling the trigger and
hearing the “pop pop pop” of the gun
going off just as the animals began to
flee created a jolt of adrenaline I couldn’t
get enough of! Where exactly did I
hunt? Nevada? Montana? Colorado?
Nope, my tag was for the comfort of
my own living room…actually I think I
still have a picture of my time!
This week’s profile is on a man who is
no stranger to the outdoors, Mr. Andy
Bell. We’ll talk more about his passions
and business as a wilderness man;
however, Andy’s story actually starts
not with deerskin, but with pigskin! “I
was born in Ely, Nevada. We lived on
a ranch but we moved over here (Elko)
when I was two because my dad got
a job at concrete company. My ended
up getting a divorce when I was six. It
was a pretty nasty custody battle, back
and forth. That lasted until I was about
eight. When I was twelve I moved over to Carlin and
lived with my dad and did Jr. High over there. And in
my eighth grade year my dad really wanted to get out
of Carlin because people were just building houses on
top of us. And so, he asked me, because I was big
into football and wrestling and I wanted a scholarship,
if I could choose anywhere in Elko county to go for
school to get more exposure at a “bigger” school.
So, I ended up settling on Spring Creek because I
went to a football camp there and already knew some
people over there. I played high school JV football as
a freshman and wrestled varsity. However, because of
a failing Spanish grade, I wasn’t able to go to State;
the first year Spring Creek ever made it. And then I
just got an “I’m going to do my own
thing” attitude and got into rodeo
my Sophomore year. I started riding
bare back (bucking horses). And
then, in my Jr. year, I got into riding
saddle bronco. And around the
third week of doing that, we went to
Carson City to compete. I ended up
going over the front of the saddle
bronc horse I was riding; I had
busted my hand earlier in that day
and I had no grip in my right hand
so I swapped hands but I couldn't
get my left hand up fast enough and
I broke my neck right about where
your head meets your shoulders…
and I remember it. I was life flighted
to Washoe Medical Center in Reno
(now Renown Hospital) and I spent
a month in ICU over there and
even quite breathing on my dad
once. I got strep throat,pneumonia,
I was on a breathing machine.
But eventually I started getting a
little better and moved to Shriners
Hospital in Sacramento where they
specialized in spinal cords and burn
injuries. (Fast forward) I ended up
living with my dad until I was 21
and then moved out on my own.
I started working with mentally
disabled adults and then worked for my dad selling
fire extinguishers. But after taking some time out from
being really sick for five months, I got back into the
work force with American Home Companion helping
care for individuals with higher functioning autism.”
Andy has been on quite the journey! He’s had to
overcome a lot…but would this week him down?
Nope! “In July of this year I actually opened a business.
I’ve always wanted to open a business. I went and
took some college classes, and I had this huge,
elaborate plan for about two years but I downsized
it into something manageable.” His business? DCB
Outdoors (Disabled Country Boy Outdoors).
www.EverythingElko.com \ March 2018 25
“The mission statement is to assist in the growth
and promotion of hunting and disabled hunting.
And we do this by introducing disabled people (or
reintroducing them) back into the outdoors. So, if
someone’s never hunted before or if they hunted
before they got hurt and haven’t since, we do that. We
do this through motivational hunting videos, disabled
hunting education, tips, blogs, stuff like that.”
What a great idea…something most people would
never even think of in a million years. But, it’s an
important need, especially in our community. What is
Andy looking forward to in this venture? “I’m looking
forward to getting the word out there and being an
inspiration to people. I’ve been told before that I’m
an inspiration so I figured that God has given that gift
and I can just use that. I think I’ve found my calling.
Just because you have an injury or disability you can
know that there is life out there. You don’t have to sit
around and just exist. You can have a full life.”
Now, it’s no secret that the Elko area is great for its
outdoor recreation. How does Andy feel about an
Elkoean outdoor man? “Elko is so outdoor! There’s a
lot of people here that share that same passion I do.
I’ve just found that people are so supportive here. I
love it! I want the people of our area to remember that
no matter what your disability is or what you’re going
through…there is life out there.”
I’m glad Andy recognizes that one of his callings is
to inspire people…because he certainly does a good
job at it. Thank you for sharing your experiences with
us, Andy! You really are an important member of our
community. If you would like to learn more about
SANDHILL
CRANES
WITH MARCH COMES THE RETURN OF SOME OF OUR
MIGRATING BIRD SPECIES. The greater sandhill crane is found in North
America, Cuba and eastern Siberia. The Nevada breeding population is found
in northeastern Nevada including Elko County. Sandhill cranes will stage in their
largest numbers in the state in Ruby Valley and Lamoille Valley during their fall
migration. These birds have spent the winter in Arizona and California along
the lower Colorado River.
In the spring they often stopover in Lund, Nevada where they stay for several weeks
before heading further north to their breeding areas. Upon arrival, pairs establish
nesting territories. Sandhill cranes form pair bonds at about three to four years of
age and they mate for life. They can live over twenty years so this is a long term
commitment. Courting cranes stretch their wings, pump their heads, bow, and leap
into the air in an energetic dance. The nest is made from surrounding vegetation
and can reach a diameter of over five feet. The pair will defend a large area of up to
400 acres which typically include wet meadows, grasslands and shallow wetlands.
Usually two eggs are laid and the parents take turns incubating for the next 28 to 30
days. The young are called colts and are tended by both parents. The colts will take
their first flights at around 60 days.
Sandhill cranes feed on a wide variety of foods. Their diet is heavy in
seeds and cultivated grains but they also eat berries, tubes, insects,
snails, reptiles, nestling birds, and small mammals.
These very vocal birds have a very recognizable honk and gurgling call.
They have a long neck and long legs and stand up to 4 feet tall with a
wingspan of over 6 feet. Its grey-brown body is often splotched with
rusty patches. Their red forehead contrasts with the white face. They fly
with their legs and necks outstretched.
Next time you are driving along grasslands in Ruby Valley, Lamoille
Valley, Star Valley, Clover Valley and the Deeth area be sure to watch
for these returning birds. Since they are setting up breeding territories
expect to see them in groups of two. To learn more about our areas
2017 Post Season Bracket, via cbssports.com
Close Contenders’ changes in
MLB OFF-SEASON
CONTRIBUTED BY ADRIAN BOWLES
The 2017 MLB season was about
as odd as you could get going into
the post season. The Los Angeles
Dodgers had a comfortable ten
game lead in the National League
(NL) West and the Houston Astros
had an even comfier 20 game
lead in the American League (AL)
West. The Cleveland Indians were
up by 15 games in their division,
the AL Central, and we saw the
Milwaukee Brewers blow their
lead in the NL Central in their
last ten games to fall behind six
games to the Chicago Cubs. Yet
each division had quite the group
of contenders fighting for the
second spot.
In the NL West we saw both the
Arizona Diamondbacks and the
Colorado Rockies clinch berths to
the NL Wild card game ultimately
ruining the hopes of the top NL
Central contenders; the Brewers
and the St. Louis Cardinals. The
Astros were clearly the top team in
the AL West but the Los Angeles
Angels of Anaheim, the Seattle
Mariners, and the Texas Rangers
all finished within two games of
each other leaving the door wide
open for a team to catch a break
in a future Wild Card game. Then
the surprise team of 2017, the
Minnesota Twins, clinched a berth
to the AL Wild Card game to face
the New York Yankees. In the
end the Diamondbacks beat the
Rockies in the NL Wild card game
and got swept in the next series
to the MLB best Dodgers. Then
the Yankees went on to beat the
Twins in the AL Wild Card game
and made it all the way to the
American League Championship
Series where they lost to the
Astros. Each team may not have
been able to make 2017 “their
year”, but the offseason always
gives them a chance to rebuild
for the next year. Let’s look at
what these contenders in the NL
West, NL Central, AL West, and
AL Central have done thus far to
better prepare themselves for the
2018 season.
FOR THE DIAMONDBACKS NOT MUCH HAS
CHANGED FOR THEM THIS OFF SEASON
besides the departure of Fernando Rodney to the
Twins via free-agency and offensive phenom J.D.
Martinez who still is an unrestricted free agent.
The organization is likely to move up Archie
Bradley into the closer role for the upcoming
season.
The only notable free agent signing was that of the
veteran catcher Alex Avila who will replace Chris
Iannetta in the lineup. The D-Backs were able to
come to terms with Avila on a two-year contract
worth $8.25mill. The veteran catcher will be a
big bonus for the organization whose catchers
weren’t the most consistent last season. In 2017
Avila batted .264/.387/.447 (batting average/
on base percentage/ slugging percentage) with
83 hits, 13 doubles, 14 home runs, and 49 RBI
(runs batted in). Between Chris Iannetta, Jeff
Mathis, and Chris Herman last season, Iannetta
was clearly the best choice, yet he only batted
.254/.354/.511 with 69 hits, 19 doubles, 17 home
runs, and 43 RBI. Avila may not be able to supply
the pop that Iannetta could, but his production
will be slightly better.
The D-Backs will also see the return of shortstop
Nick Ahmed who will be fighting to retain
his starting spot, utility player Chris Owings who
is returning from a finger surgery that was on
December 11, and Yasmany Tomas who missed
the majority of the 2017 season due to a groin
injury. The D-Backs are hoping Tomas’ power
will help replace the absence of Martinez from
the lineup. In 2016 Tomas batted .272/.313/.508
with 31 home runs and 83 RBI. Tomas was
arrested on January 18 for criminal speeding
after being clocked at 105 MPH; there still hasn’t
been a punishment appointed to him and the
Diamondbacks are hopeful to get him back on
the field as soon as possible.
The Diamondbacks have retained all five of their
starting pitchers: Zack Greinke, Robbie Ray,
Taijuan Walker, Patrick Corbin, Zach Godley, and
they are expecting to get Shelby Miller back
mid-season as he’s recovering from Tommy John
surgery. As of now the opening day starting
lineup could look like Zack Greinke on the
mound, Avila catching, Paul Goldschmidt at first
base, Brandon Drury at second base, Ketel Marte
at short-stop, Jake Lamb at third base, David
Peralta in left field, A.J. Pollock in center field,
and Yasmany Tomas in right field (Chris Owings
and Daniel Descalso are possible replacements if
Tomas does get suspended). The Diamondbacks
will have Owings, Descalso, and Ahmed available
off the bench.
MUCH LIKE THE DIAMONDBACKS, THE ROCKIES
HAVEN’T CHANGED MUCH EITHER THIS
OFFSEASON. Last year it seemed as their main
downfall offensively was their catchers, where we
saw both Tony Wolters and Jonathan Lucroy step up
to the plate but not strive there. Wolters was only
able to collect 55 hits through 229 at-bats while only
bringing in 16 RBI. Then Lucroy was supposed to
be their savior coming off his hottest year ever, just
to hit .310 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 142
at-bats. The Rockies were able to resign their 4th
round pick from the 2004 MLB draft in free agent
catcher Chris Iannetta. As stated above, Iannetta
had a good year at the plate in 2017. It was arguably
his second-best year in his career and he hopes that
he can repeat his 2008 season he had in Colorado
where he batted .264/.390/.505 with 18 home runs
and 65 RBI.
The Rockies lost their closer, Greg Holland, to free
agency this offseason. In 2017 Holland had a record
of 3-4 with a 3.61 ERA (earned run average) in 61
games with 41 saves in 45 opportunities. Holland
only gave up 40 hits, 23 earned runs, 7 home runs,
26 walks, while striking out 70 batters in 57.1 innings
pitched. Holland had a tremendous season holding
his opponents batting average to .193 while keeping
his WHIP (walks + hits per inning pitched) at 1.15.
Hollands 1-year contract in 2017 was worth $6mill
and he ended up getting $7mill after his incentives.
His performance in 2017 is exactly what you want in
your closing pitcher. The Rockies reportedly offered
Holland a 3-year contract worth $52mill making him
the highest paid relief pitcher of all time. Oddly
enough Holland denied the offer and is still looking
for a team to join for the 2018 season.
Despite losing their closer after leaving the highest
contract in relief pitching history on the table, the
Rockies wasted no time to hand that deal off to
another one of the league’s best closers in Wade
Davis. In 2017 for the Chicago Cubs, Davis had a
record of 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 59 games. Davis was
able to collect 32 saves in 33 opportunities. He gave
up 39 hits, 15 earned runs, 6 home runs, 28 walks,
while striking out 79 batters in 58.2 innings pitched.
Davis held his opponents to a .186 batting average
while keeping his WHIP at 1.14. Their numbers are
so similar; the only thing really separating them
is their saves. Holland finished 41 of his 45 save
opportunities while Davis finished 32 of his 33
opportunities. The big question around Davis is, will
he be able to keep this pace when he gets more
save opportunities? The Rockies believe so as they
gave him the 3-year, $52mill contract. Davis will be
earning more than Aroldis Chapman of the Yankees
who is seen throwing over 100 MPH consistently.
Chapman makes $17.2mill annually; Davis will be
earning $17.33 annually.
The Rockies also lost their veteran first baseman
Mark Reynold to free agency leaving rookie Ryan
McMahon with big shoes to fill. In 2017 Reynolds
batted .267/.352/.487 with 30 home runs and 97
RBI in 148 games. 2017 was Reynolds best season
since 2011 when he was playing for the Baltimore
Orioles, yet Reynolds has yet to sign with a team
for the 2018 season. Now the Rockies are putting
all their money on McMahon to solidify the starting
position. In 2017 McMahon only collected three hits
in 19 at-bats while bringing in just one RBI.
Besides McMahon, Iannetta, and Davis the rest of
the team looks very similar to last season’s. The
Rockies were able to keep their starting rotation
in Jon Gray, Tyler Anderson, German Marquez,
Chad Bettis, and Kyle Freeland while still having
Jeff Hoffman and Antonio Senzatela available to
start. Senzatela started 20 games on the mound
last season and Hoffman started 16. The opening
day lineup for the Rockies could look like Jon Gray
starting on the mound, Iannetta catching behind
the plate, McMahon at first base, D.J. LeMahieu
at second base, Trevor Story at short-stop, Nolan
Arenado at third base, Ian Desmond in left field,
Charlie Blackmon in center field, and Gerardo Parra
in right field. The Rockies will have Raimel Tapia and
Pat Valaika available off the bench.
THE MILWAUKEE BREWERS went through such
disappointing last ten games as they basically
watched the Cubs come from behind to take the
lead in the NL Central and the Rockies made a late
season jump to ensure they would make it to the NL
Wild Card game over the Brewers. But the Brewers
are hungrier than ever as they’ve acquired two of
the League’s best outfielders in January. On January
25, the Miami Marlins traded center fielder Christian
Yelich to the Brewers for center fielder Lewis
Brinson, second baseman Isan Diaz, center fielder
Monte Harrison, and right-handed pitcher Jordan
Yamamoto. Then the next day the Brewers agreed
to a 5-year, $80mill deal with Lorenzo Cain, who was
drafted by the Brewers in 2004. This will supply a lot of
production and youth into their outfield to really help
Ryan Braun. In 2017 Yelich batted .282/.369/.439
scored 100 runs, recorded 170 hits, 36 doubles, 81
RBI, and18 home runs. Much like Yelich, Cain had an
amazing year in 2017 batting .300/.363/.440 with 86
runs scored, 175 hits, 27 doubles, 15 home runs, 49
RBI, with 26 stolen bases. Talk about adding instant
production to your lineup.
The Brewers starting rotation will feature three
starters that were in the rotation last season in
Chase Anderson, Zach Davies, and Brent Suter.
The Brewers signed Jhoulys Chacin and Yovanni
Gallardo in the off-season to fill their other two spots.
Gallardo pitched with the Brewers for his first seven
years of his career from 2007-2014. In 2017 Chacin
had a record of 13-10 on the mound with a 3.89 ERA
in 32 starts. Gallardo in 2017 had a record of 5-10
with a 5.72 ERA in 22 starts. Gallardo is looking for a
bounce back year as he comes back to his stomping
grounds. Defensively the Brewers will look the same
except for the two outfield additions. The Rockies
potential opening day lineup could look like Chase
Anderson on the mound, Manny Pina catching, Eric
Thames at first base, Eric Sogard at second base,
Orlando Arcia at short-stop, Travis Shaw at third
base, Braun in left field, Cain in center field, and
Yelich in right field. The Brewers will have Hernan
Perez and Jonathan Villar available off the bench.
DESPITE THE BREWERS TAKING ALL THE
ATTENTION in the NL Central late in the season, the
St. Louis Cardinals finished just three games behind
the Brewers and their starting lineup looks stacked
from top to bottom. On December 14th the Miami
Marlins traded left fielder Marcel Ozuna to the
Cardinals for left-handed pitcher Daniel Castano,
right fielder Magneuris Sierra, right-handed pitcher
Sandy Alcantara, and right-handed pitcher Zac
Gallen. Then on the same day the Cardinals traded
away outfielder Stephen Piscotty to the Oakland
A’s for second baseman Max Schrock and shortstop
Yairo Munoz. The Cardinals decided to split
ways with Piscotty to put him closer to his father in
Oakland. Piscotty’s dad is undergoing major health
concerns and Stephen wanted to be closer to
him. Have no fear Cardinals fans because Ozuna’s
bat is about as hot as they come. In 2017 Ozuna
batted .312/.376/.488 with 93 runs scored, 191 hits,
30 doubles, 37 home runs, and 124 RBI. Doesn’t
look like a bad trade now does it? Especially when
you compare it to Piscotty’s numbers in 2017;
.235/.342/.367 with 40 runs scored, 80 hits, 16
doubles, 9 home runs, and 39 RBI. The Cardinals
also traded outfielder Randal Grichuk to the Toronto
Blue Jays for right-handed pitcher Dominic Leone
and right-handed pitcher Conner Green. Yet,
between Ozuna in left field, Tommy Pham in center
field, and Dexter Fowler in right field it seems like
they’ll be just fine.
The Cardinals did lose their electric closer, Trevor
Rosenthal, due to injury in 2017. Rosenthal is one
of many pitchers to fall to Tommy John surgery in
recent years. The Cardinals signed Luke Gregerson
to replace him in 2018. Last season Gregerson had a
record of 2-3 with a 4.57 ERA in 61 innings pitched.
He was only one for four in save opportunities.
Despite losing their closer, their starting rotation
looks very similar with Carlos Martinez, Michael
Wacha, Adam Wainwright, and Luke Weaver
returning with the addition of Miles Mikolas. The
Cardinals potential opening day line-up could
potentially look like Carlos Martinez starting on the
mound, Yadier Molina catching, Matt Carpenter
at first base, Kolton Wong at second base, Paul
DeJong at short-stop, Jed Gyorko at third base,
Ozuna in left field, Pham in center field, and Fowler
in right field. The Cardinals will also have Jose
Martinez, Harrison Bader, and Greg Garcia off the
bench.
THE NL WEST AND THE NL CENTRAL were very
close when it came down to the end of the season
at around the 86-win mark, things were even closer
in the battle for second place in the AL West as the
Angels, Mariners, and Rangers all finished within
two games of each other. The busiest of the three
teams must be the Angels this offseason. The
Angels signed the two-way star, Shohei Otani, back
in December hoping he’ll be able to start in the
rotation as well as hit as a designated hitter from
time to time. Since then the Angels have acquired
two more infielders; Ian Kinsler and Zach Cozart.
The Angels traded out fielder Troy Montgomery
and right-handed pitcher Wilkel Hernandez to the
Detroit Tigers for Kinsler. In 2017 Kinsler batted
.236/.313/.413 with 90 runs scored, 130 hits, 25
doubles, 22 home runs, and 52 RBI. Then on
December 15, the Angels signed Cozart to play
third base. In 2017 Cozart hit .297/.385/.548 with
80 runs scored, 130 hits, 24 doubles, 24 home runs,
and 63 RBI. Cozart and Kinsler will greatly make
up for the potential the Angels organization was
expected from Kaleb Cowart and Luis Valbuena in
the previous seasons.
The Angels starting rotation will look the same
except for the addition of Otani; Garret Richards,
Andrew Heaney, Otani, Tyler Skaggs, Matt
Shoemaker, and JC Ramirez will still be available to
start if needed. The Angels potential starting lineup
for opening day could look like Richards starting
on the mound, Martin Maldonado catching, Albert
Pujols at designated hitter, C.J. Cron at first base,
Ian Kinsler at second base, Andrelton Simmons at
short-stop, Cozart at third base, Justin Upton in left
field, Mike Trout in center field, and Kole Calhoun in
Right field. The team full of household names. The
Angels will still have Cowart, Valbuena, and Jefry
Marte off the bench.
THE MARINERS MAY LOOK STAR-STUDDED, but
they haven’t been able to reach playoffs since well
before they got Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz.
The only big acquisition the Mariners made so far
this off season is receiving Dee Gordon via trade
from the Miami Marlins. The Marlins traded Gordon
and future considerations to the Mariners for righthanded
pitcher Nick Neidert, right-handed pitcher
Robert Dugger, and short-stop Chris Torres. Oddly
enough, the Mariners want Gordon to play center
field replacing Jarrod Dyson. Last season Gordon
hit .308/.342/.375 with 114 runs scored, 201 hits,
20 doubles, nine triples, two home runs, 33 RBI,
with 60 stolen bases. Last season Dyson batted
.251/.324/.350 with 56 runs scored, 87 hits, 13
doubles, three triples, five home runs, 30 RBI, with
28 stolen bases. Dyson didn’t have a bad year but
I’m sure Mariners fans are excited to see Gordon
arrive with stats that are almost twice as high.
Seattle’s starting rotation looks very similar to last
season with James Paxton, Felix Hernandez, Mike
Leake, Erasmo Ramirez, and Ariel Miranda. Marco
Gonzalez and Andrew Moore are both available to
start on the mound as well. The potential starting
day lineup for the Mariners could look like James
Paxton on the mound, Mike Zunino catching, Cruz
designated hitting, Ryon Healy at first with the
departure of Yonder Alonso, Cano at second base,
Jean Segura at short-stop, Kyle Seager at third
base, Ben Gamel in left field, Dee Gordon in center
field, and Mitch Haniger in right field. The Mariners
will also have Guillermo Heredia and Taylor Motter
available off the bench.
THE TEXAS RANGERS WASTED NO TIME BULKING
UP their pitching staff as they signed Bartolo Colon,
Mike Minor, and Doug Fister. They also traded the
Giants right-handed pitcher Sam Wolff and righthanded
pitcher Israel Cruz for left-handed pitcher
Matt Moore. Colon finished 7-14 in 2017 with a 6.48
ERA in 28 starts. Minor finished 6-6 in 2017 with a
2.55 ERA coming out of the bullpen for the Kansas
City Royals. Fister finished 5-9 with a 4.88 ERA in 15
starts. Moore finished 6-15 with a 5.52 ERA in 2017
in 31 starts. The Rangers starting rotation looks
very different from last season as Cole Hamels is
the only healthy starter who played for the Rangers
last year. Their rotation will look like Hamels, Fister,
Moore, Minor, and Colon. Martin Perez is out due to
elbow surgery but is expected to be back in April.
The Rangers potential opening day lineup could
look like Hamels on the mound, Robinson Chirinos
catching, Shin-Soo Choo designated hitting, Joey
Gallo at first base replacing Mike Napoli, Rougned
Odor at second base, Elvis Andrus at short-stop,
Adrian Beltre at third base, Willie Calhoun in left
field, Delino Deshields in center field, and Nomar
Mazara in right field. The Rangers have Drew
Robinson and Ryan Rua available off the bench.
LASTLY, THE SURPRISE TEAM OF 2017, THE
MINNESOTA TWINS, have stayed quiet this off
season only signing two relief pitchers, Addison
Reed and Fernando Rodney; both closers. Reed
was able to come to terms with a two-year,
$16.75mill deal, while Rodney got one-year,
$4.5mill. In 2017 Reed had a 2-3 record with a 2.84
ERA and had 19 saves in 21 opportunities. Rodney
in 2017 had a record of 5-4 with a 4.23 ERA and
had 39 saves in 45 opportunities. Looks like we’re
going to have a battle to see who claims the closer
role. The Twin’s starting lineup has remained the
same as last seasons with Ervin Santana, Jose
Berrios, Kyle Gibson, Adalberto Mejia, and Phil
Hughes. The Twins potential opening day starting
lineup could look something like Santana on the
mound, Jason Castro behind the plate, Robbie
Grossman designated hitting, Joe Mauer at first
base, Brian Dozier at second base, Jorge Polanco
at short-stop, Miguel Sano at third base, Eddie
Rosario in left field, Byron Buxton in center field,
and Max Kepler in right field. The Twins will
still have Eduardo Escobar and Ehire Adrianza
available off the bench.
With the loss of players and all the new additions to these teams, which will be most successful on
their route to the playoffs? WILL D-BACKS STILL HAVE THEIR ELECTRICITY WITHOUT MARTINEZ?
Will the Brewers offense supply enough runs to give their starting rotation a break with the additions of Yelich
and Cain? Will the Brewers and the Cubs be able to keep the Cardinals offense contained as their lineup reeks
talent from beginning to end? Which of the three teams in the AL West will be able to stand above the rest
and claim sole procession of second place in hopes of attaining a Wild Card Game? Will the Twins continue
to be one of the top dogs in the AL Central to give the Indians a run for their money? These contenders left
2017 just barely missing their chance at Post Season, better watch out division leaders, these guys look good.
CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE
The goal of creating a controlled
environment starts with choosing
the ideal site location, construction
materials, orientation, and
equipment. Start with a location
that provides quality solar gain
through the winter into spring
growing season. Orient a standalone
structure facing east to
west with the vent opening facing
prevailing, western winds. Choose
durable construction materials for
the roof, sidewalls, and endwalls
that will withstand heavy snow,
strong wind, and provide insulation
through winter-spring.
Our Main Greenhouse roofing is a 6ml,
four-year, double-layer, horticultural
grade, polyethylene with an inlet
fan to provide airspace for insulation
between the two layers. A Stuppy
Greenhouse Manufacturing “kit” that
includes easy-to-install extrusions to
attach the poly to the structure and at
the ends.
The sidewalls are 4' panels of twin-wall,
polycarbonate leading to 4', double
wall, insulated, plywood sheets to
perimeter concrete footing. Endwalls
are full sheets of same polycarbonate.
The west end has a temperature
activated outside vent with cooling
pads inside. The two exhaust fans
located on the east end, pull fresh, cool
air across the greenhouse and vent it
out. We have 2 propane heaters, one
overhead and one under the bench
with a convection tube, 2 exhaust
fans, 4 airflow fans, an environmental
controller that co-ordinates the
heating and cooling equipment, and
a ‘Dozatron’ chemigation system to
apply fertilizer and chemicals through
the waterline. Ideally, the greenhouse
is kept cool and dry. Daytime
temperatures through the winter
months are in the low seventies and
kept above freezing at night.
Opening for the Season March 31!
Colorful Annuals, Perennials, and Shrubs
Spring Hours: 8-4 Tues-Saturday & 10-3 Sun-Monday
As the growing season approaches,
February 1st in the main greenhouse,
nighttime temperatures are increased
to 50 while daytime temps stay in the low
seventies. In March, the temperature
(starting 20 minutes before dawn and
for 30 minutes afterwards) is decreased
by 8 degrees. This allows for plant
height control producing a stockier
plant without plant growth regulators/
chemicals. This also results in venting
excess humidity that accumulates in the
greenhouse overnight. Humidity levels
through spring are at a comfortable
40% during the day, but increase to
85% at night. Early morning venting
can bring that number down to 65% in
a matter of minutes reducing the need
for chemical application of fungicides.
Another way to reduce high, nighttime
humidity levels is to finish watering
in the greenhouse early and avoid
watering on cloudy days.
The Southern Greenhouse roofing
is the same as the main greenhouse
except it’s a 5ml, two-year, doublelayer
film. Sidewalls on both sides are
manually operated, rollup curtains, and
the endwalls are fiberglass. This is also
a Stuppy Greenhouse “kit”. Daytime
temps are kept in the sixties through
the day and just above freezing at
night with a thermostatically controlled
heater and a shutter/exhaust fan
cooling system.
We’ve
Moved!
By the end of March, the perennials
growing in the southern greenhouse
are moved out to the display area
benching. Snow and cold temperatures
are not unusual in April and we are
always ready to drop the Remay fabric
to protect our plants.
Tomato seeds are started in the main
greenhouse in mid-March. We grow
several varieties every season with
about 200 seeds per seeding tray. This
puts our “starts” ready by mid-May to
begin the acclimating process for late
May planting. Otherwise, our annuals
and perennials are grown from rooted
cuttings, seedling liners, and bareroot
stock brought in from large growers
that specialize in growing for smaller
greenhouses, just like us.
Fertilizer rates: 200ppm for actively
growing starts and 100ppm once
mature. Phosphoric acid is applied
at 1oz per 100 gallons of water to
achieve a pH of 6.1; without the pH
adjustment, our well-water is at 7.9,
making nutrients unavailable.
Weeds growing in the gravel are
controlled by spraying a mixture that
includes: 1 gallon vinegar, ½ cup of
salt, and 4 T dishsoap. Hint: Dissolve
salt in warm vinegar first.
By early June, temperatures are
uncomfortably high in the southern
greenhouse, so the poly is pulled,
stored, and replaced with a 45% shade
cloth. Likewise, shade cloth is pulled
over the stay-in-place poly for the main
greenhouse by late June.
Pesticide applications: The EPA has
defined reduced-risk pesticides as
compounds that pose a lower health
risk to humans, the environment, and
beneficials. These products do not
work on the insect's nervous system
like standard insecticides and are
therefore more worker-friendly within
closed greenhouse environments. We
have chosen to use these reduced
risk pesticides in our greenhouses
including 'Endeavor' to control aphids,
'Conserve' to control thrips, and Bt
(Bacillus thuringiensis) to control
shore flies and fungus gnat larvae.
Lots of folks fight fungus gnats in their
houseplants too and this product works
great to control them, naturally.
Growing your own plants can be
challenging, but also very satisfying.
We hope this information provides you
with some insight on how our small
operation began in 1991 and some
ideas if you are considering building
your own greenhouse.
Start your trip in Dublin, and spend some time in
what most feel is the most overlooked capital city in
Europe. This is surprising, because it is a youthful,
vibrant city with a long history and offers many cultural
experiences. Dublin's roots stretch back more than
3,000 years (possibly many more) to thatched Celtic
roofs, Viking settlements and druid stone sites. You
can still trace Dublin's past along the cobblestone
roads running through Gothic, Georgian and Victorian
neighborhoods nestled against the modern buildings
and landmarks of today. The cosmopolitan side of
Dublin complements the city's traditions while also
acting as a center of arts and education in Ireland.
Celtic monasteries were great protectors of
knowledge during the Dark Ages. The intricate Book
of Kells, containing biblical manuscripts thought to
be produced in the 800s, has survived intact and
well-preserved to this day; you'll find it on display at
the Trinity College library. Other nostalgic treasures
around Dublin include the National Museum of
Ireland, the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin Castle
and St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Exploring Galway, the Aran Islands and the Cliffs
of Moher. Travel to the west side of the island to
experience what some consider the most beautiful
landscape in the world. At Rossaveal, you can board
a comfortable, modern ferry for a short 45-minute
crossing to Kilronan on Inishmore, the largest of the
Aran Islands and where Gaelic is the first language
of the islanders. Be sure to stop by and visit the
clifftop Dun Angeus, one of the most spectacular
and dramatic prehistoric stone forts in Europe. At
the Cliffs of Moher, rising 668 feet above the Atlantic
Ocean, savor the breathtaking panorama of the Clare
coast. A view you won’t soon forget.
Killarney, the famed Ring of Kerry and County Cork.
Continue on the south coast of Ireland and visit one
of the most popular destinations. Drive the famed
Ring of Kerry for a 100-mile panoramic drive around
the island’s southwestern tip. Plenty to focus your
camera on here: sparkling seascapes, mountains
dotted with brightly colored farmhouses, winding
lanes bordered with subtropical vegetation, and
the breathtaking panorama of the Lakes of Killarney
from Ladies View. Back in Killarney, you could enjoy
a special treat: a fun-filled horse-drawn carriage ride
through the national park with glorious vistas of the
Lakes of Killarney and ancient Ross Castle. Wander
across the Kerry Mountains, and don’t forget to drive
into County Cork for a visit to Blarney, renowned for
its castle and magical Kissing Stone. Are you brave
enough to kiss the stone for yourself?
SO much fun and adventure await you in Ireland. Call me for
may want planned. My services are free of charge, my expertise
One of the positive outcomes of the Nevada
Nonprofit Academy from the University of Utah
Professional Education department brought to
Elko by Newmont is the supportive relationships
formed by local nonprofit leaders. The group,
called Nonprofits for Excellence, includes
personnel from Partners Allied for Community
Excellence (PACE Coalition), Family Resource
Center, Friends in Service Helping, The Terrace
at Ruby View, Communities in Schools and
Ruby Mountain Resource Center. The U of U
certificate course took place throughout spring
and summer of 2017 and included a series of full
day classes to promote nonprofit excellence.
Nancy Ostler, Executive Director of the
Newmont Legacy Fund brought the series to
Elko to improve the skill sets of the people and
processes in nonprofit management.
“The course was a wonderful opportunity for
area nonprofit leaders who sought consultancy
from nonprofit practitioners that provided
leadership, management, research and custom
support,” Ostler said. “It was also terrific to
see many others from local nonprofits in the
same room talking about their organization’s
strategies and learning from one another.”
Ostler said it is exciting to see the graduates
of the program put the principles they learned
into practice. “The group has already started
to identify new collaborative opportunities,
improved and developed new sustainability
plans and have increased their effectiveness
within the community,” Ostler said.
“At the final session of the U of U course we discussed
continuing to meet so we could continue putting
into practice what we learned in the course,” said
Melissa Schultz, Executive Director of Communities
in Schools. “We all agreed it would be a good
idea to keep meeting and as result of our monthly
meetings we learned that all of us were struggling
with the time and effort required to raise funds.”
The idea of a shared fundraiser was discussed at
length and the group decided on a project that
included elements of excitement, easy to implement
and require few hours of manpower.
Laura Oslund, Executive Director of PACE Coalition,
said “I once helped with a fundraiser that raffled off a
bunch of gift cards and it was a big hit with the crowd
and when the group discussed this we all agreed it
met our criteria for a shared fundraiser.”
Mike Magney of PACE Coalition created a list of
suggested names for the fundraiser and the group
chose “Gift Cards for Good.” “The idea is for
businesses or individuals to donate gift cards and we
will put them all in a big jar and raffle them off to one
lucky winner,” Magney said.
Gift cards are a popular present during the
holidays but they aren’t always wanted
by the recipient. The Research organization
CEB TowerGroup estimates that
$1 billion of the $130 billion spent
on gift cards in 2016 went unused.
It could be the recipient doesn’t like,
or have access to, the restaurant
or retailer to spend it.
“Whatever the reason people don’t need or want
the gift card,” says Rebecca Hepworth, Executive
Director of Ruby Mountain Resource Center, “we
thought donors would enjoy knowing the money
raised from Gift Cards for Good would be helping so
many people in our community.”
Each agency’s staff, board of directors, and
volunteers are selling raffle tickets for the Gift Cards
for Good drawing. Tickets are $10 each and the raffle
is expected to contain at least $1,000 of gift cards or
certificates. The group is collecting all gift cards or
transferrable gift certificates and on March 16 they
will conduct a Facebook Live event for the drawing.
The drawing will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Family
Resource Center, 331 7th St. in Elko. Everyone is
welcome to attend the event but you do not need
to be present to win. County Commissioner Delmo
Andreozzi will be on hand to draw the lucky winner.
www.EverythingElko.com \ March 2018
“We are asking everyone in the community to help
us by donating their gift cards to this worthwhile
cause,” says Sherry Smith, Executive Director of
Friends in Service Helping. “The group will contact
local businesses to ask for their help by donating a
gift card or certificate.”
Char Gustafson, Program Coordinator at the Terrace
at Ruby View said, “The group has already collected
more than $250 in gift cards including those from
Smiths, Maverick, and McDonalds. Newmont is also
donating some Chamber Checks.”
All gift cards can be dropped off at the
Family Resource Center or you may call
753-7352 to arrange for them
to be picked up.
ALL ABOUT THE
Cervical
Spine
By Dr. Todd Wendell
of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic
THE CERVICAL SPINE – that is, the upper seven of our
vertebrae – must surely rank among the most
under-appreciated and most vital parts of our body.
Its 37 separate joints endlessly allow the head and neck to move atop the
torso – all the while obeying constant commands from the special senses
and reflex mechanisms. Look at it this way: the cervical spine faithfully
holds up our heavy heads between 14 to 16 hours a day. This is hardly
easy. First of all, the head is far from evenly balanced on top of our spine.
In fact, it’s tilted heavily forward; without the cervical muscles, it would
topple over onto our chest.
Secondly, the head’s weight can become unbearable over time. (If you’d
like to get a clearer picture, try this experiment: hold a bowling ball with
your elbow on a table for as long as you can. Few people can keep this up
longer than an hour.)
That means the cervical spine is a vital part of nearly all our everyday
activities, including speaking, gesturing, sitting, standing, lying down,
breathing and many more. Most of what our head does, it does thanks to
the cervical spine.
Protecting Your Spine
That’s why so many of the injuries to this area are so serious
– often resulting in paralysis or death. For example, hitting
your head on the bottom of the pool or tackling in sports can
compress the cervical spine against the shoulder and cause
grave injury. Even everyday headaches often involve the
cervical spine.
And that’s why you’ll be glad to know that we lead the way
in recognizing the cervical spine’s uniqueness – even from
the rest of the spine – A structural evaluation and problem
focused care can make all the difference when caring for it
accordingly.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT…
AT THE SPRING CREEK GOLF COURSE
Ericia Cook and Sarrah Urbahn started Happy Cooks
Catering in October of 2015. Ericia and her husband
went on to take sole ownership of Happy Cooks while
Sarrah stepped down to a General Manager position.
Over the last two years Happy Cooks Catering has
had the pleasure of serving Elko and the surrounding
areas. As the business grew, Ericia started to search
for the perfect restaurant location. Finally, the perfect
opportunity arose, and Cook’s Fire Oven & Grill was
born. Starting March 1st, Cook’s Fire Oven & Grill will
be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a
full bar, seven days a week. They will offer a salad bar
for lunch Monday-Friday and will eventually have a
Brunch and Mimosa Buffet on the weekends. They
will be launching a finer dining menu around May,
serving steaks, pastas, seafood and more. Their
vision is to show the community there is nothing to
be intimidated about just because it’s a golf course
restaurant. They are going to bring a friendly and
intimate dining experience to their guest along
with a high-quality menu that is both delicious and
affordable.
MANAGING THE CHALLENGE OF
ROSACEA
www.glymedplus.com
Written by Christine Heathman
The course of rosacea is prolonged. Recurrences
are common and difficult. Rosacea is a skin
in trauma and out of balance. When tissue
repairs itself, it requires more amino acids for
cell proliferation. Peptides are organic chemical
compounds composed of one or more basic
amino acid groups and one or more acidic
carboxyl groups. Select a peptide product that
contains palmitoyl-pentapeptide-3 and other
peptides with a low molecular weight in the
amino acid chain. Peptides are non-irritating
and more stable than vitamin C and Retinol. Not
only do peptides have the capability to reduce
the inflammation associated with rosacea; they
reduce the aging factors that compound rosacea
sufferers linked with photo-damaged skin.
Peptides must be an integral step in treating
rosacea skin.
Carbohydrates constitute the main source of energy for all body functions and are
required for the metabolism of other nutrients. This is why balanced nutrition is
necessary, incorporating non-inflammatory foods augmented with antioxidant
supplements help with rosacea skin detoxification.
Treatment of rosacea requires patience from
the client and a thorough understanding of the
histology, anatomy, and physiology of this disorder in
relationship to the skin by the skin care professional.
Rosacea is currently incurable; however it is a great
skin challenge to treat because much can be done to
relieve its signs and symptoms. An important goal for
clinical treatment is to limit progression to the more
severe, end-stage manifestations of the disease.
It is established that rosacea clients can have sensitive
skin and misled that this hyper-reactive condition
could be affected by topical agents such as cleansers
and AHAs. This hypersensitivity link has not been
convincingly demonstrated, nor is it proven. For
example, rosacea patients are not especially prone
to stinging after an application of 10 percent Lactic
Acid. Clinical studies of this disease in relationship to
these acids are reassuring because rosacea can readily
accommodate irritating agents. Because rosacea is
photodermatosis, it is absolutely imperative that a
rosacea compatible SPF 30+ and protective makeup
such as a camouflage base is part of the daily treatment
program to protect against the environment. Selection
of sun protection for rosacea must be a formula that
does not increase inflammation. Know your skin care
company and be sure they provide an SPF product for
72
72 www.EverythingElko.com \ March 2018
Rosacea is often a difficult, stubborn, humiliating
disease to treat if not properly understood
rosacea. Not all SPF products are rosacea compatible and
many sun protection products will irritate the condition
and hold heat in the skin causing more redness.
Rosacea is often a difficult, stubborn, humiliating disease
to treat if not properly understood. It is a challenge for
the creative skin care therapist. Great therapeutic triumph
comes when using AHAs in the clinical environment for
rosacea. Many topical acne agents include retinoids that
may be too irritating to the rosacea skin type and could
aggravate the telangiectasiac component. AHAs have
not been shown to promote angiogenesis and therefore
may be a more effective keratolytic agent for rosacea.
In addition, these actives have been substantiated to
possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory impact on
rosacea.
The properties of AHAs may help account for the
decrease in erythema and telangiectasias in thicker
skin, masking some of the superficial vascular plexus,
and may also account for the ability of sensitive skin to
tolerate the AHAs. AHAs may also provide an alternative
to topical steroids for mild inflammation as the steroids
may actually worsen rosacea and thin sensitive facial skin,
further aggravating the telangiectasiac component.
AHAs have also been shown to improve cutaneous atrophy
due to potent topical steroids by increasing epidermal
thickness and dermal components. With their unique
affect on corneocyte cohesion, AHAs may prevent the
attachment of the demodex mite in the follicle, exhibiting
clinical effects similar to that of sulfur. Thus, AHAs applied
daily and through chemical peeling may improve the
erythema and papular component of rosacea, providing
additional treatment alternatives for this recalcitrant
condition. It is believed that use of a low pH AHA can
deplete bacterial nutrients, resulting in decreased
numbers of pathogens. In addition, enhancement of
ground substance (Hyaluronic Acid, glycosaminoglycans,
elastic fibers, and collagen) in the dermis by AHAs could
also potentially make telangiectasia less noticeable.
AHAs also increase the internal hydration residents by
stimulating the lamellar bodies of the cell. This action
helps compensate for any lipid imbalance and increases
the barrier repair function of the skin.
Acne sulfur masks and resorcinol up to four percent are
additional effective topical to retard the onset of bacteria
and the activity of the demodex mite that resides in the
follicle. These should be applied at least once a day,
preferably in the evening before 10 p.m. in conjunction
with a complete skin care circadian balanced program.
Nutrition plays a key role in treatment. Avoidance of
foods such as chocolate, nuts, cheese, soft drinks,
iodized salt, seafood, alcohol, spices, and hot drinks is
imperative.
When treating rosacea, it is important to detoxify and
nourish the connective tissue from within. Cleansing and
replenishing is central to the ayurvedic medical principals
of health by cleansing the body of toxins before you
begin treating the condition. Always ensure the client is
using a supplement manufactured for this purpose and
that the ingredients include detoxifying complex of water
balanced nutrients, cleansing herbs, and fiber blends.
In addition, the acne skin formulas must contain antiinflammatory
ingredients that treat the rosacea skin from
within with healing zinc, blood purifiers, in addition to
vitamins A and C for healthy tissue recovery.
Rosacea also responds favorably to topical applied
nutrients including vitamin C and other water and lipid
soluble vitamins such as E and A. These ingredients
are known for their radical scavenger abilities and with
twice daily use, these powerful anti-inflammatories can
drastically reduce the facial erythema that accompanies
rosacea's chronic redness in as little as 48 hours. They
can also be effective moisturizers since dryness of the skin
can further irritate and redden the rosacea skin condition.
AESTHETICIAN'S GUIDELINES
• Avoid stimulation, heat/hot steam, or sunlight
• Avoid known vasodilators and irritants
• Use suspected flushing/blushing
cosmetics carefully
• Incorporate non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory products
• Limit number of overall ingredients (avoid the
soup of too many products mixed together)
• Choose multi-functional skin products
• Use established compatible products
for rosacea
• Use a rosacea specific SPF 30 cream
• Use proven treatments – do not experiment
• Avoid steam, galvanic, hot towels, electricity
• Use AHAs, Ultrasound treatments to kill
bacteria, demodex mite, exfoliate, and infuse
anti-inflammatory topical
Green tea is also known to be a safe and beneficial
treatment for rosacea and recommended to
be a staple ingredient in sun protection factor.
Be sure your rosacea compatible SPF contains
this feature ingredient. Women treated with
the green tea extract cream had a 70 percent
improvement in rosacea compared with women
treated with a placebo, says Tanweer Syed, MD,
PhD, an Associate Professor of Dermatology at
the University of San Francisco, Calif. This study
was presented at the American Academy of
Dermatology meeting in New Orleans.
Medical treatments are part of the life of many
rosacea sufferers, and your client may have already
been on one or more of the following agents. It is
the responsibility of the aesthetician to familiarize
themselves with these medications.
Oral Medicine—several agents can be used
to treat rosacea. Erythromycin and tetracycline
are the main oral antibiotics used. Other
antibiotics that can be used are doxycycline,
flagyl (metronidazole), and minocycline. Some
people only need to take antibiotics for flareups,
while others have to take antibiotics every
day to suppress symptoms. The antibiotics help
more with the red bumps and acne-like lesions
on the face, yet they don't help as much with the
redness and blood vessels. Isotretinoin (Accutane)
has been used for stubborn rosacea but can have
severe side effects.
Topical Medicine—several topical agents can be
also be used to treat rosacea. The most commonly
used agent is Metrogel (metronidazole). Another
topical agent is sulfacetamide and sulfur lotion
that can be found in a flesh-colored formulation to
help hide some of the redness.
A brief history of today’s
OPIOID CRISIS
To many, it appears the opioid crisis came out of
nowhere. It seems out of control, even as states
and the federal government have worked to slow
down and reverse the crisis. In reality, opioid use
disorders have been increasing for some time,
driven by a convergence of three major factors
before reaching epidemic proportions:
1
2
3
Patient satisfaction surveys of physicians.
The push to include pain management
as part of patient protocols.
The marketing of new opioid pain medications,
supposedly with very low addiction potential.
78 www.EverythingElko.com \ March 2018
With the rise Health Maintenance Organizations
(HMOs) in the 1990s as an alternative to traditional
health insurance, so too rose the use of mortality
reports and patient satisfaction surveys to
gauge the quality of care provided by hospitals
and physicians. As these reports were used to
determine reimbursement rates for services, they
directly affected providers’ incomes, placing great
pressure on health care providers to meet patient
expectations of what constituted appropriate
freedom from pain.
The use of patient satisfaction surveys coincided
with another trend that gained momentum in the
nineties. Medical publications, patient advocates
and health care experts began thinking of pain as
a barrier to recovery from surgery or injuries. They
began pressing physicians to look at pain as a vital
sign and to treat pain aggressively. A pain scale
from one to ten was developed with ten being the
highest level of pain. Doctors were advised that
they should reduce their patients’ pain to zero or as
close to that as possible.
Fortunately for physicians, pharmaceutical
companies released timely new opioid-based pain
medications like oxycodone, formulated, they said,
to make dependency or abuse highly unlikely.1
Armed with the new, “safer” opioids, doctors
heeded the call to defeat pain and lost much of
their hesitation to prescribe opioids. It seemed the
new best practice was to prescribe enough pain
medication to ensure the completion of healing
without pain. The new drugs promised safer relief
for those suffering from chronic pain too.
We learned too late that the new opioids
were susceptible to being misused, leading
to dependency and addiction. Reactions were
as varied as were the targets of blame: the
pharmaceutical industry, over-prescribing physicians
and patients who developed a dependency on
the drugs. Such patients often found themselves
abruptly cut off from their source of relief and
searching for alternative sources to meet their
needs.
Practices like doctor shopping and multiple
prescriptions increased and a black market in
prescription opioids emerged to meet the demand
for alternatives to legitimate prescriptions. As
efforts to control access to prescription opioids,
Mexican and other foreign drug cartels added
inexpensive heroin to the mix.
This multi-faceted history of the current opioid crisis
implies that ending it will require a multi-faceted
solution and cooperation among the medical
community, the pharmaceutical industry, treatment
providers, prevention organizations and the public.
It is good that such cooperation has been under
way for some years.
In the meantime, each of us can contribute to
reducing illicit and prescription opioid abuse by:
Asking our
doctors about
non-opioid
alternatives to
manage pain.
Asking, when opioids
are indicated, for the
minimum number
needed to get the job
done.
Keeping opioids
and all prescriptions
in locked cabinets
• Parchment Paper
inspiration.kenmore.com
I just love the simplicity and
festivity of this adorable treat. My
kids loved it too and it was a fun
way for this Irish-at-heart family
to celebrate this fun holiday!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, friends!
1. Preheat your oven for 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with
parchment paper and assemble your pretzels into a clover
shape as shown above.
2. Add a Rolo in the center of each of your clovers. Gently take your
cookie sheet over to your oven and slide your cookie sheet into the
oven. Bake for 3 minutes, or until the Rolo has just begun to melt.
3. Pull out the cookie sheet and carefully insert a lollipop stick in
through the Rolo while carefully placing an M&M in the center.
Repeat until finished. It’s important to do this step while they are
still warm, as these harden quickly once they cool.
4. Allow them to cool fully before removing from the cookie sheet
and carefully peel them off of the parchment paper. Ta-da!
I am Lucky Craft
What makes you “lucky” – the power
of reflect on ST. Patrick’s Day
So often, our kiddos don’t spend time thinking
about what makes them a good person and
appreciating the good things in their life.
This craft helps them do just that.
In this activity, students create a four-leaf clover.
On each leaf, students write something that
makes them lucky. You could also come at it
from the perspective of something they’re
thankful for or appreciate.
Soft white powder flying up as your
heart starts racing with every twist
and turn of your skis, this is a feeling
some people wait all year for. Winter
sports are at times elusive. So much
of where and when participants can
interact with their sport depends
on Mother Nature and geography.
At times the weather can be a fickle
lady, as we have witness in our area
this year. There are years where we
have more snow than we know what
to do with, followed by years of little
to no snow at all. This is part of what
makes winter sports so magical. At
times it is all a game of chance.
1606039
State Farm, Bloomington, IL
As the world has been enamored
with winter sports over the past
few weeks it seems only fitting that
our Good Neighbor for the month
of March is Roche Bush. Roche has
been involved in winter sports and
skiing since he was three years old.
He grew up with his family in Jackson
Hole Wyoming, where he developed
a deep appreciation and love of
skiing and the ski industry. After high
school Roche attended the University
of Colorado in Boulder, Co. He
attended the University on a skiing
athletic scholarship. He was able to
attend and compete in the NCAA
National Championships three times
in his time at the University. He also
had the experience of being friends
and roommates with Olympians who
were the first to win medals for Skiing
for the United States.
Roche moved to Elko in May of 1972
where he worked as an electrician.
He left the electrical field and
became a teacher for thirteen years.
He taught Jr. High math for ten years,
and then three years of High School
math. After his career in teaching
Roche started a small photography
business. He ran Fox photo for
ten years, where he would take
school pictures for students in Elko
84 www.EverythingElko.com \ March 2018
County. While he was busy with teaching and the
photography business he also became involved
with the Elko County Planning Commission for
thirteen years starting in the late 1970’s.
It was through his work with the planning
commission that Roche became involved with
the SnoBowl. In the late 1980’s there started to
become concerns with the safety of the current
ski area at the time, which was located on Adobe
Summit. The highway had started to become more
and more congested with increases in the mining
industry and with the layout of the ski area at that
time there were concerns that there would be and
accident. This is when they started to look for a
new parcel of land to have a ski area. They were
able to find a parcel of land that was owned at the
time by Priscilla Layton. The county bought the
entire parcel and created the Snobowl.
Roche has been involved with the operations of
the Snobowl since its inception. He started taking
people up the hill with a rope tow. In all of his time
with the Snobowl he has only missed two days at
the area while the Snobowl was able to operate.
The chair lift was put up in 1996, and as he says,
“I had to learn to run it the hard way.” He has
performed the maintenance and electrical work on
the chair lift since its installation. He also does all
of the grooming for the area. He starts grooming
in the wee hours of the morning and then begins
operating the chair lift for skiers at nine a.m.
The Snobowl is open for skiers from 9a.m.-3p.m.
Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays during the winter
months. This of course is when Mother Nature
provides our area with enough snow for the area
to be open. When weather permits Roche is able
to make snow in order for the City of Elko Parks and
Recreation Jr. Skier program. On years as warm
as this one, unfortunately it is too hot to generate
snow.
In the early years the Snobowl was funded by lift
ticket sales and annual spaghetti feed fundraisers
that Roche and other members would put on. The
Snobowl is now owned and funded by the City
of Elko. They have a variety of programs through
the parks and recreations department, including
a Jr. Ski program. In looking to the future of the
Snobowl there has been a lot of work to get bike
trails on the mountain. Roche believes this could
be incredibly beneficial as there is a growing
life go right. CALL ME TODAY.
om
mountain bike population in our area. Mountain
bikers may be able to ride the lift to the top of
the mountain and then ride trails down, if this is
a plan that comes to fruition. The mountain is an
incredible asset and it would be great to use it
year round.
State Farm, Bloomington, IL
When I asked Roche about his greatest memory
he told me it was being a friend and competitor
with the best skier in the world. He is very
excited to be going back to the NCAA National
Championships as a spectator this year for the first
time and reuniting with his old friends. They will
be going to Steamboat Springs in March to attend
the championships for the first time. Roche also
took the time to tell me about his most interesting
day. On April 5th 2005 Roche played 18 holes of
golf at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko, and then
he went up and skied at the Snobowl. He ended
his day by water skiing at South Fork reservoir.
Proving that in our area you can enjoy almost any
sport! We thank Roche for the amazing work and
contributions he has made to our community.
Roche has been putting smiles on faces in our
area for years. Thank you for all you do from those
EXPANDING GIRLS
HORIZONS IN
Science and Engineering
Submitted by
Elko Veterinary
Clinic
March is a month we look fondly upon
as the veterinary nation celebrates
“Expanding Girl’s Horizons in Science and
Engineering” month. Veterinary medicine
has a huge appeal to millions of children,
especially girls, as many of us have fond
memories of our family’s cat or dog, or
visiting the grandparents’ farm every summer
to play with goats, horses and chickens.
Combine our instinctual habits of caring and
nurturing with a woman’s general ability to
multi-task (sometimes to the point of selfdestruction…),
these traits and capabilities
are a woman’s launching pad to be an
ideal veterinarian, veterinary technician, or
technician’s assistant.
According to the May 2017 edition of the “Veterinarian’s
Money Digest”, women occupied more than 80% of
seats in US veterinary schools. As far as the ratio of
women to men in any aspect of vet medicine, that ratio
stands at 55 women for every 45 men, in both public
and private veterinary sectors, with more than 90%
of veterinary technicians in America being women.
Biology, pharmacology, nursing and restraint, surgery
and anesthesia, and communications and computer
literature are just a few of the higher education
requirements that are used daily by all in veterinary
practice. Our field of medicine is constantly growing
and changing and learning, and as the advocates for
our patients, so must we. Yet, when you ask women
involved in the field of veterinary medicine, you will
soon learn that our days aren’t always filled with puppies
and kittens. There are emergency cases that needs our
quick minds and capable hands at any hour of the day.
There is pain that we need to relieve and sadness that
we need to comfort with tender, yet confident hands.
And we always need to have our thoughts in the
mindset of a team dynamic, where every member of
the veterinary staff supports each other and steps into
their scrubs and saves the day 24/7.
90
90 www.EverythingElko.com \ March 2018
SO NOW THAT YOU’RE ALL SORTS OF EXCITED
AFTER READING THUS FAR, WHAT TO DO NOW?
Many women in our field will offer the
same pieces of advice… Reach out
to teachers, to relatives and friends.
Ask about how you can get more
information, and contact information
of others who may be able to point
you in the right direction. Use the
internet to research conventions,
STEM programs, or camps that
pertain to your specific interest. Start
inquiring now, it’s never too soon to
start chasing a passion and deciding
if you can make it into a career. And
lastly, be sure to do the work, before
you make a decision. Make phone
calls, schedule interviews, try to log
shadowing hours with people or in
businesses and hospitals, so that you
have a clear and unbiased view of the
field you’re interested in. In a 2006
article by JAVMA, there was anywhere
from 5-8 positions available for every
veterinary technician graduate in
the country, so just imagine the
opportunities that could be available
to you in 5-10 years!
Be diligent, persevere, and
use that brain, young lady!
The sky is the limit, and your
future is in your hands.
