"Pollution: It's Spreading Like Wildfire" 

United States' wildfires kill millions of animals and spew 

billions of pounds of pollution each year. Wildfires have 

continued to grow in recent decades due to government 

regulations that have decreased effective fuel reduction 

efforts. Grazing, logging, and other effective fuel reduction 

efforts must be implemented to save animals and protect 

the environment from wildfires.

About the Speaker: 

Zachary Gerber is a partner at Gerber Law Offices, LLP 

located in Elko, Nevada. The firm practices in the area of 

property rights and civil law. Zach is a fifth generation Elko 

County resident, and is the youngest son of Grant Gerber, 

who spent his life advocating for and protecting private 

property rights. Zach has been a participant and supporter 

of the Kelly Springs repairs project, Jarbidge Shovel Brigade, 

Klammath Bucket Brigade, Elko County’s Sage Grouse Land

MARK HAYWARD 

MARK HAYWARD’S intellectual 

and creative energy was 

captured by the science and art 

of photography early in his life. 

He found his passion when he 

began photographing nature 

and then by honing his skills and 

continuing to focus on improving 

his technical print making 

techniques. 

Mark tells us that as each print 

materializes, he visualizes the 

image in a very tangible way, that 

is both durable and collectable. Mark Hayward 

believes that in order to fully appreciate the 

enduring quality of a well-captured wildlife 

image, it should be viewed in print form. This 

is why he enjoys the challenges of printing and 

presentation. All of Mark’s prints are created by 

himself in his Spring Creek studio. 

Mark’s work is recognized 

internationally. His art has been 

featured in many exhibits. 

Publications include National 

Geographic Magazine, North 

American Nature Photographer’s 

Association , the National 

Wildlife Federation publication, 

Range Magazine. He was a 

featured speaker this March at 

Shooting the West Symposium, 

and has shown work in Western 

Folklife Wiegand Gallery, and 

Elko’s Northeastern Nevada Museum.

photographic genre. “How fortunate I am to 

live in such a beautiful land and share it with all

Ingredients: 

• 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley, plus 8 to 

10 parsley stems 

• 4 sprigs thyme 

• 1 pound green split peas, picked over 

and rinsed 

• 1 large leek, white and light green part 

only, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 

crosswise 

• 2 stalks celery, chopped 

• 2 carrots, chopped 

• Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 

• 1 smoked turkey leg (1 to 1 1/2 pounds) 

• 1/4 cup nonfat plain yogurt 

• 1/2 cup frozen peas, thawed 

• Crusty multigrain bread, for serving 

(optional) 

Preparation: 

Tie the parsley stems and thyme together with kitchen string and place in a 6-quart slow 

cooker. Add the split peas, leek, celery, carrots, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper; 

stir to combine. Add the turkey leg and 7 cups water. Cover and cook on low until the split 

peas and meat are tender, 6 to 8 hours. 

Discard the herb bundle. Discard the skin and bones from the turkey leg and shred the 

meat. Vigorously stir the soup to break up the peas and make the soup smoother. Thin 

with water, if desired. Stir in the chopped parsley and about three-quarters of the turkey 

meat; season with salt and pepper. 

Ladle the soup into bowls. Thin the yogurt with a little water, then spoon onto the soup. 

Top with the thawed peas and the remaining turkey. Serve with bread, if desired. 

Ingredients: 

FOR THE CRUST: 

• 1 cup all-purpose flour, 

plus more for dusting 

• 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 

• 1/4 teaspoon fine salt 

• 4 TBSP cold unsalted butter, 

cut into small pieces 

• 1 large egg 

• 2 tablespoons 2% milk 

FOR THE FILLING: 

• 2 small russet potatoes 

• 4 1/2 cups chicken broth 

• 5 medium carrots, chunks 

• 1 to 2 tsp chopped fresh thyme 

• 2 TBSP extra-virgin olive oil 

• 1 large onion, finely diced 

• 3 TBSP all-purpose flour 

• 1/3 cup 2% milk 

• 3 stalks celery, sliced 

• 3 cups shredded rotisserie 

chicken 

• 1/2 cup fat-free plain Greek 

yogurt 

• 1 cup frozen peas 

• 1/2 cup minced fresh parsley 

• Kosher salt and ground pepper 

Preparation: 

Crust: Combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the butter, one piece at a time, 

pulsing until the mixture looks like coarse meal. Separate the egg; refrigerate the egg 

white. Beat the egg yolk and milk in a bowl, then add to the food processor until the dough 

comes together. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and gather into a ball. Flatten into a 

disk, wrap in plastic wrap and chill at least 1 hour. 

Filling: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Prick the potatoes with a fork and bake directly 

on the oven rack until tender, about 45 minutes. Cool slightly, then peel and break into 

small pieces. Bring the chicken broth, carrots and thyme to a simmer in a small saucepan 

over medium heat and cook 2 minutes; cover and keep warm. Meanwhile, heat the olive 

oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 8 minutes. 

Sprinkle in the flour and stir until lightly toasted, about 3 minutes. Add the milk, celery, 

potato pieces and the warm broth mixture and simmer until thickened, about 15 minutes. 

Remove from the heat and stir in the chicken, yogurt, peas and parsley. Season with 

salt and pepper. Transfer the filling to a 2-quart casserole dish. Roll out the dough on a 

lightly floured surface until about 1/2 inch thick and slightly larger than the dish. Beat the 

reserved egg white in a bowl; brush over the dough and season with salt and pepper. 

Press the dough against the sides of the dish. Place on a baking sheet and bake 

until the crust is golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.

Ingredients: 

• 1 Large Sweet Potato, peeled and diced 

• 4 Tbsp Olive Oil, divided 

• Kosher Salt, to taste 

• Cracked Pepper, to taste 

• 4 C Chopped Kale, packed 

• Juice from 1/2 Large Lemon 

• 1 Apple, cored, quartered and sliced 

• 1 1/3 C Hummus 

• 1/2 C Dried Cherries 

• 1/3 C Almonds 

• 2 Tbsp Napa Valley Blend Herbs , 

divided 

Ingredients: 

• 2 pounds steak, cut into strips 

• 1 cup low-sodium beef broth 

• 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce 

• 3 tablespoons honey 

• 2 tablespoons sesame oil 

• 2 tablespoons rice vinegar 

• 4 cloves garlic, minced 

• 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 

• 2 tablespoons cornstarch 

• 4 heads broccoli, cut into florets 

• 2 cups quinoa 

• 4 cups chicken broth 

• Sesame seeds, to garnish 

Preparation: 

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl toss together the sweet potatoes, 

2 tablespoons of the olive oil, and a generous seasoning of salt and pepper. Turn out 

the potatoes onto a baking sheet in a single layer and roast until tender and golden, 

around 25-30 minutes. 

In a large bowl, add the kale, followed by the lemon juice and remaining 

2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and 1 tablespoon of the Napa 

Valley Blend, then massage by hand until tender. Divide between 4 bowls. 

Top each bowl with roasted sweet potato, apple, hummus, dried cherries, and 

almonds. Sprinkle with remaining herbs and enjoy. 

Preparation: 

Set your slow cooker to the Brown/Sauté setting (see the note below if you don’t 

have this option), and put the steak into the basin of the slow cooker. Sear for a 

few minutes per side, just until the outsides of the meat are browned. 

Whisk the beef broth, soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, rice vinegar, garlic, and red 

pepper flakes in a medium bowl. Pour over the beef. Cover the slow cooker, and 

cook for 2-4 hours on low, or 1-2 hours on high. 

Meanwhile, cook the quinoa in the chicken broth in a medium saucepan. To 

do so, cover and bring to a boil, then remove the lid and simmer until all of the 

liquid is absorbed, about 15-20 minutes. Scoop 1/2 cup of the sauce out of the 

slow cooker, and whisk it with the cornstarch to create a slurry. Add the cornstarch 

slurry and the broccoli to the slow cooker, and cook for 10-15 minutes, until the 

broccoli is tender. Serve the beef and broccoli over the cooked quinoa. Garnish 

with sesame seeds.

Ingredients: 

• 12 Lemon Oreos 

• 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 

• ¼ cup sugar 

• ¼ cup sour cream 

• ¼ tsp. vanilla 

• 1 egg 

Ingredients: 

• 1 stick butter 

• 1/2 cup peanut butter 

• 3/4 cup brown sugar 

• 1/4 cup white sugar 

• 1 egg 

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 

• 2 tablespoons milk 

• 1 3/4 cups flour 

• 1 teaspoon baking soda 

• 1/2 teaspoon salt 

• 1/2 cup marshmallow fluff 

• 1/2 cup Nutella 

Preparation: 

Chop 6 Lemon Oreos into small pieces, set aside. Beat together cream cheese and 

sugar until well mixed. Add sour cream and vanilla until blended, followed by the 

egg. 

Stir chopped Lemon Oreos into cheesecake mixture. Line a muffin pan with 

6 cupcake liners, adding a Lemon Oreo to the bottom of each cup. Spoon cheesecake 

mixture on top of Lemon Oreos. 

Bake for 20 minutes at 350 or until centers are almost set. Cool, then refrigerate 

for 3 hours. Enjoy! 

Preparation: 

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a standard sized muffin tin with cooking spray. 

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter, peanut butter, and sugars until 

light and fluffy. Beat in the egg. Stir in the milk and vanilla. In a medium bowl, combine 

the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to the creamed mixture and beat until well 

combined. 

Place around two teaspoonfuls of dough into the bottom of each muffin tin and use 

your fingers to press it in a bit to cover the bottom of each muffin well. Drop a teaspoon 

of marshmallow fluff and Nutella in the center of each. Roll a teaspoonful of dough into 

a ball and smash it flat and place it over the top of the fluff and Nutella. Repeat to cover 

each cookie. 

Bake for 12-14 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely before removing from 

the muffin tin.

Ingredients: 

• 8 cloves garlic, peeled 

• 2 tablespoons olive oil 

• Kosher salt and freshly ground 

black pepper 

• 1/2 cup grated mozzarella 

• 1/2 cup grated fontina 

• 1/2 cup grated Parmesan 

• 1/2 cup grated Romano 

• 2 teaspoons chopped chives 

• 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 

• 1 round artisan or sourdough loaf 

• 1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter, melted 

Preparation: 

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. 

Put the garlic cloves on a square of heavy foil, drizzle with the olive oil and sprinkle 

on some salt and pepper. Wrap it up and bake until the garlic is golden, nutty and 

mushy, about 1 hour. Let cool. Lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. 

Mix the garlic together with the 4 cheeses, chives, crushed red pepper flakes and 

some black pepper in a bowl. 

Cut the bread in strips in one direction, being careful not to cut all the way through 

the loaf. Rotate the bread 90 degrees and cut in the other direction. Stuff the cheese 

mixture in between the rows. Drizzle the melted butter all over the top. 

Wrap in foil and bake for 25 minutes. Open up the foil and bake until the cheese is 

hot and bubbly, another 10 minutes. Serve immediately. 

Ingredients: 

• 2 cans chickpeas (15 oz each), rinsed • ½ cup chopped fresh dill leaves (I used 

and drained, or 3 cups cooked chickpeas one 0.75 ounce package) 

• 2 cups grated carrots (about ¾ pound • ½ cup pepitas (hulled pumpkin seeds) 

or 5 to 6 medium carrots, peeled and • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 

grated on the large holes of a box grater • 2 to 3 tablespoons sherry vinegar 

or in a food processor fitted with a 

• 1 medium-to-large clove garlic, pressed 

grating attachment) 

or minced 

• 2/3 cup chopped celery (2 long stalks) • ¼ teaspoon salt 

• ½ cup thinly sliced green onions 

• Freshly ground black pepper 

(about 4) 

Preparation: 

In a medium serving bowl, combine the chickpeas, carrots, celery, green onions, 

and dill. Set aside. 

Toast the pepitas in a small skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until they 

are starting to turn golden and make little popping noises, about 5 minutes. Set 

aside to cool for a few minutes. 

To prepare the vinaigrette, in a liquid measuring cup or small bowl, combine the 

olive oil, 2 tablespoons of the vinegar, garlic, salt, and about ten twists of pepper. 

Whisk until blended and pour all of the dressing over the chickpea mixture. Add 

the toasted pepitas to the bowl and stir to combine. 

Taste, and add additional vinegar (for more zing, I usually add another 

tablespoon) and/or salt (for more flavor overall, add another pinch). For the best 

flavor, let the salad marinate for 30 minutes or even overnight in the refrigerator.

CALLIE & JASON BOGUE:

Elko is a beautiful 

town. It’s a place full 

of exciting things to 

do and breathtaking 

things to see. It’s also 

home to some fantastic 

people, people with a 

lot of different skills, 

accomplishments, and 

dreams. Furthermore, 

some of these individuals 

have chosen to follow through with said 

dreams and open a small business so that 

others in the community can share in what 

they believe. However, despite what some 

may think, starting and cultivating a small 

business is not easy for many. It involves 

a lot of late nights, early mornings, stress, 

money, people from all walks of life both 

in person and online. There is so much 

that goes into the day to day of a business 

owner. And today, we’re going to explore 

and, hopefully, provide some insight on 

this topic with a married couple who are 

doing the work from the ground up! 

Jason and Callie Bogue are the husband 

and wife owners and operators of B3 

Glass LLC. It was a pleasure being able to 

sit down and hear a little bit about their 

story, but it was interesting hearing their 

perspectives on owning a small business. 

The voice of the people who frequent our 

local small businesses can 

be pretty loud, so it was 

nice hearing the voice of 

the people on the other 

side of the counter if 

you will. Or, in this case, 

hearing the voice of the 

people on the other side 

of the window! “Both 

sides of our family were 

born and raised here in 

Elko; our company team is made up of 3rd 

and 4th generation Elkoians. Growing up 

here, we had known each other as kids, 

through mutual family and friends at family 

cabins at Gold Creek. Callie went off to 

college in Twin Falls and then used their 

distance program to finish her bachelors 

in agricultural business at the University 

of Idaho. When Callie moved back to 

Elko after college, we got reacquainted 

through some mutual friends. We started 

our business in 2015 (The June before our 

wedding in August), so we’re three years 

young and growing. We run the business 

as a married couple and are honored to 

have Jason’s dad as part of our team with 

over forty years experience in the glazing 

industry. Jason grew up in a background 

of construction and glass, as well as 

agriculture; his stepfather’s family has a 

ranch. At seventeen, Jason started working

for his stepdad doing construction as well as 

doing glass work with his own dad. He really 

got started in the industry at an early age 

truly enjoys the trade and diversity it has; he

Great! That’s a nice little look into your past. 

Now, what are you two working through 

as you look to take your business into the 

future? “Well, we would love to grow and 

build even more in our county. A lot of 

people don’t realize we also do siding and 

seamless gutters, but a lot of people don’t 

even realize we own a company! People 

may still know us as the kid’s everyone grew 

up around, so that’s something we’ve been 

working on for ourselves. We are steadily 

growing, making us excited for the future of 

our business. We want to get more involved 

with community events and the community 

because we are a young company. And we 

really do love to help people invest in their 

properties. We do residential and commercial 

projects. Jason and his dad have really high 

standards for quality of work they provide, 

knowing the windows, shower doors, mirrors, 

siding, seamless gutters will be seen daily 

by our customers. These things will be 

part of the memories they are making with 

their families and friends. And the biggest 

compliments on our work come from 

customer referrals because the customer’s 

love for a job well done can spread quickly

love building up and supporting the kids’ 

programs in our town; they’re going to 

shape the next generation of leaders for all

Productions host three nights of craft beer tasting 

and performances of dramatized works of Edgar 

Allan Poe October 4, 5, and 6 beginning at 7 PM 

at the DLC. Tickets for the wildly popular event 

are just $30 per person and include four tasting 

flights, background on the beverage selections, 

customized pint glass, and soda for our non-alcohol 

drinking guests. Seating is limited for what the Free 

Press called, “an evening of refreshingly original 

entertainment." 

Long since departed, melancholy, and dark 

storyteller, Edgar Allan Poe will welcome guests 

and audience participation is encouraged. Literary 

selections featured during past Poe & Pints have 

included The Oval Portrait, Dream Within a Dream, 

The Raven, Masque of the Red Death, Alone, The 

Cask of Amontillado, The Music of Erich Zann by H. 

P. Lovecraft, and Josh Webster’s Good Spirits among 

others. Funds raised during Poe & Pints help support 

GLP’s commitment to youth and adult theater 

programming, instruction, education, and events. 

Boston-born in 1809, Edgar Allan Poe may have 

been the nation’s first famous writer and poet. Poe 

wrote eerie, grim, and cryptic tales exemplified in 

his 1839 short story The Fall of the House of Usher, 

the 1843 short story The Tell-Tale Heart, and his 

immediately successful 1845 poem, The Raven. Poe 

was one of the earliest authors of the short story, 

considered the inventor of detective fiction, and 

served as an important contributor to the new genres 

of horror and science fiction. Poe’s death, at the age 

of 40, in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, is stoked 

with mystery. He vanished on his way home and 

was later discovered in a delusional state, muttering 

nonsense, and wearing clothing that was most likely 

not his own. Poe continues to influence literature 

and pop-culture around the world even today. 

Directing Poe & Pints for 2018 are local artists and 

community volunteers Derek Burwell and Frank 

L. Sawyer. Frank first conceived of the project in 

2014. Said Sawyer, “I have always been a Poe 

fan so I wanted to create an unique event for the 

community.” Working with DLC Managing Partner 

Jennifer Anderson, and local artists John Wright, 

Derek Burwell, and Erika Patrick, the team developed 

the details of the project. Frank has directed such 

shows as The Last U.S. Mail Stage Robbery, Bard in 

the Yard, Poe & Pints, Glengarry Glen Ross, Much 

Ado About Nothing, Lysistrata, The War of the 

Worlds, The Zoo Story, Talk Radio, and Bringing it 

All Back Home among others. Mr. Burwell makes 

his directorial debut for Ghost Light Productions in 

Poe & Pints. Derek has appeared in dozens of local 

productions including The Rocky Horror Picture 

Show, The Tempest, The Odd Couple, Bard in the 

Yard, Love Sex and the I.R.S., Poe & Pints, Glengarry 

Glen Ross, Bringing it All Back Home, and Much Ado 

About Nothing among others.

LittleCreek Gallery and Bar is Elko’s premiere art

ON THE HUMBOLDT RIVER 

Driving over the Humboldt River via 

the 12th Street bridge you can see 

the effects of our hot summer. The 

Humboldt is slowly drying up in some 

stretches. All that is left in many areas 

are pools of water not much bigger 

than a kids wading pool. What few 

fish and frogs that are left are trying to 

survive in these areas. Enter the wading 

birds. They too are trying to survive in 

this heat and are drawn to the pools in 

search of prey. These bird have pointed 

bills and strike with lightning speed. 

Great Blue Herons are our largest and 

heaviest wading bird. They can be up 

to 54” in length with a wingspan of 

72”. They weigh only a little over six 

pounds. Adult birds are a grayish blue 

overall with a long yellow to orange bill 

and have a black crown and black eye 

stripe. In flight it curls its long neck into 

a tight ‘s’ shape. Its wings are broad 

and rounded with its legs stretched 

out way beyond the tail. They will eat 

nearly anything within striking distance 

including fish, amphibians, reptiles, 

small mammals, insects and other birds. 

The Great Egret is the largest of the 

white egrets. They can be up to 39” in 

length with a wingspan of 51” and they 

weigh almost 2 pounds. All feathers on 

Great Egrets are white. Their bills are 

yellowish-orange, and the legs and feet 

are black. Great Egrets wade in shallow 

water to hunt fish, frogs, and other small 

aquatic animals. They typically stand 

still and watch for unsuspecting prey 

to pass by. Then, with startling speed, 

the egrets strike with a jab of their long 

neck and bill. In flight it too curls its 

neck back and has its legs stretched 

out beyond the tail. During breeding 

season a patch of skin on its face turns 

bright green, and long plumes grow 

from its back. These plumes were 

prized as adornments for ladies hats 

in the late nineteenth century. Because 

of this they were hunted nearly to

extinction. The National Audubon Society was originally 

founded to protect birds such as these from being hunted 

for their feathers. 

The Snowy Egret is also totally white but it has a dark 

bill and yellow feet. It is smaller and only reaches 24” in 

length with a wingspan of 36” and weighs less than a 

pound. Unlike the other two birds it tends to forage with 

its neck tightly coiled and may be stationary or crouching. 

They use their feet to stir up or herd small aquatic animals. 

During breeding season they develop long wispy feathers 

on their backs, necks and heads. In 1886 these plumes 

were valued at $32 per ounce, which was twice the price 

of gold at the time!

ONE FRIDAY MORNING in July 

my family and I were treated to 

a morning we won’t soon forget! 

We attended media day for the 

Ruby Mountain Balloon Festival, 

held annually the last weekend 

of July, and it didn’t disappoint. 

We were assigned to ride with 

pilot Pat Irwin, with 21 years 

of experience piloting under 

his belt, and by the end of the 

morning we had a made a friend 

for life. His hot air balloon is 

named the Patriot, a beautiful red 

white and blue balloon. We had 

the pleasure of Pat teaching us 

how to crew for a hot air balloon 

with set up, launch and, storing

Forever in my memory will be the 

anticipation and complete shock 

that we were witnessing in the 

faces of the construction workers 

watching us as we hovered to 

land in the street. My favorite 

part of the entire morning was 

the champagne and sparkling 

cider toast to commemorate 

our flight and the words of Pat 

that the best part of ballooning 

are the smiles and happiness it 

allows him to share with others. 

I know when my husband and I 

think back on this experience it 

will always bring a smile for us.

to do with kiddos?? I’ve got 

ya covered! Make it into a 

keychain they can hang on 

their backpack. 

Instructions: 

· Cut a roughly three-foot length of 1/8th-inch ribbon or string. The 

longer the string, the longer the lizard. Approximately three feet. 

· Fold the string in half so that the two ends meet. This will lead to a 

loop at the other end of the string. 

· Take the loop and run it through the bottom of a keychain clasp. 

Really, any sort of clasp will work. All you need to do is create a 

slipknot around the clasp. You should have your loop on one side of 

the clasp, and the long excess string on the other. 

· Pull the ends through the loop to create a slipknot. Reach into the 

loop and pull the strings through, pulling until tight. This creates a 

simple slip knot that will hold the lizard in place as you work. 

· Add two beads to the leftmost string. These beads will be your body, 

so choose the color you want for the bulk of the lizard. Thread the right 

string through the beads the opposite way. If the leftmost string enters 

through the left, thread this one through from the right. Pull both ends 

of the strings until the beads slide up to the keychain clasp. Lightly pull 

on the opposite ends to force the beads up to the top. 

· Follow the pattern and repeat. 

· When complete, tie a double knot at the end of the tail to keep the 

beads in place.

are on a mission to gather coats for kids in need in the Elko area. Last year we helped 

over 300 children have a warmer winter thanks to the support of our community.

ANIMAL PAIN AWARENESS MONTH 

What to watch for in 

keeping your pet 

comfortable! 

Many of us with older pets know that they age quickly, 

and often feel the same stiffness, “slowing down”, and 

“getting older” signs that we as people do. 

As humans, we all know 

that when we are stiff and 

moving slowly, it is often because we are 

protecting a painful area of our body, whether 

it is a chronic or acute pain, our bodies are in 

self-protective mode. We supplement our daily 

routines with bandages, creams and oral pain 

meds and anti-inflammatories so we can enjoy 

our day and still have freedom of motion. Why 

they, do we casually dismiss the “getting old” 

motion of our old pets as a normal cycle of their 

life that we accept? Animals feel and respond to 

pain the same ways we do, although often times 

less vocal and more stoically that ourselves. Here 

are some signs to watch for in you aging pet to 

let you know when they need you to intervene 

with care provided by your veterinarian. Getting 

old is not a disease, but pain is, so we hope to 

help you know the warning signs to keep your 

pet happy and living longer. 

Both dogs and cats are similar in how they 

exhibit signs of acute and chronic pain. Chronic 

pain is most often subtle, increasing in severity 

during certain times of the day or after activity. 

Arthritis is the most kind of chronic pain in 

animals, and just like people, their signs of pain 

are the same. Lack of socialization, refusing 

to move, whimpers or whines, aggression of 

various forms, and licking or self mutilation 

(usually on the area that is paining them most, 

like hocks, stifles, carpus joints or flanks). Acute 

pain, or worsening chronic pain, often show 

more obvious signs, like an anxious expression 

accompanied by screaming or howling, overt 

aggression protecting themselves, a decreased 

appetite that may be accompanies by vomiting, 

changes in their body posture or gait, and 

sudden weight loss. 

It is pretty easy to asses the level of pain 

our pets are feeling, which can help us 

determine what routes we need to take to 

make them comfortable. On a scale of 0-4, 0 

is happy/content/ and no palpable pain with 

minimal body tension; 1 is slightly unsettled, 

whimpering/flinching to palpation and mild 

tension; 2 is licking a body area, a reluctance 

to move or respond, guarding and pulling 

away from touch, and noticeably reacting to 


palpation and needing analgesic assistance; 

3 is unsettled when left alone, constantly 

guarding or protecting a body area, 

dramatic response to human interaction 

(either growling, biting, hissing, spitting or 

screaming) and needing pain control; 4 is 

groaning or screaming when unattended, 

unresponsive to surroundings, focused on 

pain, aggressive reaction to human touch 

or manipulation and in need of medical 

assessment and analgesic support. 

What can you be doing at home to make 

your home environment more comfortable 

for your pets as they age? Slippery surfaces, 

like linoleum and wood flooring, make older 

pets anxious as they know they aren’t sure 

footed and their eye sight can’t help them 

see areas where they may slip and fall, 

putting pressure on achy joints or painful 

body areas. Put carpets or runners on 

slick flooring on the areas where your pets 

frequently walk, to establish better footing 

and keep them comfortable walking. Stairs, 

and jumping up and off of furniture also 

becomes harder as they age, so intervene by 

placing small ramps to their favorite places 

like the bed, couch, or windowsill. Be sure 

to train them how to use the ramps so they 

know to use it going up and down; if you 

have a dog or cat that won’t oblige to ramps, 

use their favorite treats to train them to wait 

to be lifted up and off of steep surfaces, we 

don’t want to encourage jumping at an old 

age, as back and hip joints lose elasticity and 

can become displaced or broken easily. 

When you start to 

notice these signs 

of aging in your pet, don’t 

hesitate to contact your 

veterinarian to schedule a senior 

wellness examination. A full pain 

assessment, complete bloodwork 

and radiographs will be the start of 

determining the level and origin of 

the pain, and the treatment plan for 

making them comfortable. 

Don’t let their age be their limiting 

factor, age is only an unlimited 

number, not a disease!
