festivities were scheduled around the 4th of July weekend,
Art in the Park is the top fundraiser held
by the Elko County Art Club (ECAC).
Art in the Park (AIP) is a weekend event
with hundreds of vendors coming from
all across the west! The event itself is
held in the Elko City Park, and it is here
under the big trees where countless
vendors come to sell their artwork
and handmade crafts. Food vendors
are also present to keep everyone
full while shopping. The event is well
attended by thousands of people in the
community and is an annual tradition.
AIP is held this year (2018) on July 14th
and 15th with set-up on the afternoon
of Friday the 13th. Proceeds from this
event support the ECAC’s activities,
scholarship awards and the Art Gallery.
The entire AIP event is organized and
run by the dedicated members of the
Elko County Art Club.
This two-day family friendly event is
free for all visitors and attendees! We
want to encourage local artists from
Elko County and surroundings to sign
up early to get preferred booth size
and space.
This year’s marketplace will include
both new and returning vendors with
custom goods including art, jewelry,
specialty foods, children’s items
and much more. Please check back
periodically to see the list of vendors,
entertainment, and food trucks
So come on out and join us at
Elko's largest art-based event
and bring your friends and
family. This wonderful summer
event is FREE to any and all
visitors!
Ingredients:
• 16 ounces cream cheese softened
• 1/2 teaspoon monk fruit concentrated powder
• 1/4 teaspoon stevia concentrated powder
• 1 cup heavy whipping cream
• 16 ounces strawberries cut into bite sized pieces
• 14 ounces blueberries about 4 cups
• 12 ounces blackberries about 2 cups
• 6 ounces raspberries about 1 cup
Preparation:
Beat cream cheese with electric mixer until smooth. Add in monk fruit, stevia, and heavy
whipping cream. Beat with electric mixer until thick and creamy. If too thick, a little extra
cream can be added. Fold in fresh berries. Store in fridge or serve immediately.
Recipe Notes: A total of about 1/2 cup sugar equivalent is needed in the recipe.
Something like Swerve or Splenda can be used instead of the monk fruit and stevia blend.
Ingredients:
• 3 medium Zucchini
• 2 cups Grape tomatoes (halved)
• 1 cup Sun-dried tomatoes (drained,
chopped)
• 1/4 cup Fresh basil (chopped)
• 4 cloves Garlic (minced)
• 1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar
• 2 tbsp Olive oil (divided)
• 3/4 cup Mozzarella cheese (shredded)
• Sea salt
• Black pepper
Preparation:
In a large bowl, stir together oats, chocolate chips, peanuts, mini M&Ms, melted
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with foil (greased lightly)
or parchment paper.
Slice each zucchini in half lengthwise. Use a spoon or melon baller to scoop out
a hollow area in the middle for the filling. Arrange the zucchini cut side up on
the lined baking sheet. Brush or spray with olive oil (about a tablespoon total).
Sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper.
Roast the zucchini in the oven for 12-15 minutes, until golden. Meanwhile,
combine the grape tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, minced garlic, fresh basil,
balsamic vinegar, and remaining olive oil. Add sea salt and black pepper to taste.
When the zucchini is done, spoon the bruschetta tomato mixture into each
zucchini boat. Bake for 10 minutes, until the tomatoes are soft. Afterward, set the
oven to the broil setting. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top of the bruschetta. Broil
for 2-3 minutes, until cheese is melted and golden.
Anthony Around Town
JESSIE BAHR:
President of Spring Creek Association
Spring Creek
One of the many great things about doing
Anthony Around Town is that, hopefully, you the
reader have an opportunity to hear the story of
a different member of your peers every week.
That’s always a lot of fun! Moreover, I also love
giving you all a chance to get to know a little
bit more about my (Anthony Crosby) story
throughout the growth of this blog because I
not only have a desire for you to read my work
every week but to get to know the guy behind
the keyboard more personally as well. Which,
hopefully, will heighten your enjoyment of these
pieces.
With that being said, as some of you may know,
Elko has become my adopted home over the last
seven or so years. When I moved to this town
during the Summer of 2011, my entire life could
(and did) fit into my tiny red Lanos Daweoo. I had
relationships here before making the trek but
no immediate family or anything of that nature.
Fast forward a couple of months after coming
over from Reno, I needed a place to live as I was
looking to get established. Now, this may not be
the safest way to go about doing this I admit,
but I hoped on Rudy Want Ads and found a
couple with a room to rent in their Spring Creek
house. I had never met this couple before but
within what felt like a day, I was sleeping under
their roof. And honestly, I cannot for the life of
me remember the name of that couple, but I
really enjoyed my time with them. They were
kind, generous, and practically played a big role
in where I am today. So, to the wonderful couple
I’m referring to if you’re reading this… thank you
for opening up your home to a random kid from
Reno for a couple of months. Spending time
living with you was my first real experience with
the town of Spring Creek. Although I “live in
town” now, I really enjoyed/enjoy my time out
there. I mean the view you all have out there,
it can’t be beat! I love you, Spring Creek! And I
know our guest this week does as well.
This week, our featured resident is Jessie Bahr,
president of the Spring Creek Association. Now,
if you’ve been following Anthony Around Town
over the last several months, then you know
we keep things real around here. Traditionally,
when these types of interviews take place,
the person of the week will meet with me, for
about an hour or so, over coffee or something
of that nature. However, this week just seemed
to be full of scheduling conflicts (all on my end)
so this just wasn’t able to happen. I was still able
to hear Jessie’s awesome story and heart for her
community. I didn’t want to miss what she had to
say, and I don’t want you to either!
So, with our time with Jessie, we’re going to
cover three big things: who, how, and heart. Who
is Jessie Bahr? How did she get to where she is?
What is heart behind what she does? I’m excited
for you all to hear from her; let’s get started!
JESSIE BAHR. WHO ARE YOU?
Currently, I serve as the President of the Spring
Creek Association. I have lived in the Association
since 2013 and I saw a need for positive change
and decided I wanted to help make Spring Creek
a better place for all. I took over operations of
the SCA in 2016 and have been working hard to
fix many issues the community has been facing
for years including water issues, roads, updating
amenities, internet etc. There are many areas that
we can grow as we move towards operational
excellence and sustainability. We are aware of
some issues we have faced since the early 80’s,
and these will take time to fix, so we appreciate
the positive communication and patience of the
residents in Spring Creek.
Spring Creek is a growing community, almost
15,000 residents and master planned for many
more. There is a large development across from
the high school slated for 4,000 additional homes.
I look forward to helping the SCA Board bring
resources to the residents including commercial
businesses, reliable internet, affordable water rates,
updated amenities, and a solid infrastructure as we
work over the next few years. It is very rewarding
coming to the office each day knowing you are
there to make a real difference in the lives of the
residents, to the place my family and I call home.
Without the support of a solid board, community
and the staff team who make up the SCA, we
would not be nearly as far as we are. It takes a
tremendous amount of resolve, patience, and
determination to be successful in the positions
the staff team fills, and I truly am grateful for them
coming to the office each day with a smiling face.
HOW DID YOU GET WHERE YOU
ARE TODAY, JESSIE?
Well, I’m from the East Coast. I grew up living
between New Jersey and Pennsylvania (so
yes, if you have heard me speak I say “water”
like “wooder”). My father was a mechanic in
Jersey and mother worked three jobs to keep
my brother, sister and I together. I realized at a
very young age that I had to do well and make
a living for myself if I wanted to make a real
difference. My mother taught me how to be
independent and that anything was possible with
determination. And, as a single mother of 3 who
also worked three jobs, I figured I had better
listen to her advice. I went to college, played
field hockey, and graduated with honors with
a chemistry degree. I was very involved in nonprofits
and giving back at a young age. I started
working in the community development field out
of college and really enjoyed bringing resources,
organizations, and collaborations together for the
greater good. I was coached and mentored in my
early years by many great CEO’s who taught me
key skill has made me successful today. I moved
from the East Coast in 2012 and moved to Elko
County in 2013. I met my now husband Rusty,
who is the CEO at the Boys and Girls Clubs of
Elko (Anthony Note: maybe we’ll hear from him
in a future Blog) and moved here to help make
Elko County a great place to live for all. We have
three wonderful younger children and three older
children who are out of the house…you could say
we are a busy family! We are avid supporters of
many community organizations including child
advocates, soccer clubs like Northern Nevada
Youth Soccer Association and SC United and our
church Ruby Mountain Bible Church.
WHAT IS YOUR HEART FOR SPRING CREEK
AND ITS PEOPLE? WHAT DOES THE AREA
MEAN TO YOU?
Spring Creek is home. Home to a diverse set of
residents and values just over the hill. Coming
from a large area where you’d jump on eight-lane
freeways every day, you come to appreciate the
richness of humanity coexisting here at the base
of the Ruby Mountains. We appreciate the small
community feeling where “everybody knows
your name” or knows who to call if you need
something. Each day I have unexpected and
fascinating conversations which I enjoy.
The reason I pursued the vacant position with SCA
began with the fact that I am a property owner. I
had frustrations like many have had and still have,
regarding the roads, amenities and other items.
I believe that the best avenue to make change
is getting involved, stepping up and using your
time and talents to make positive improvements..
so I applied and accepted the offer of the board.
Spring Creek is my home and where my family,
friends, and neighbors reside. This is not a job for
me; this is a mission. A mission to make Spring
Creek an amazing place to live and thrive for all.
Spring Creek faces many obstacles, but if we stick
together as a community, for the greater good,
we will be able to overcome our obstacles and
challenges. We have tremendous potential and,
with the board, staff, and communities’ help, we
can continue to make positive changes for good.
It will take time and patience from all parties, but
the vision is set… we just need to execute it!
Thank you so much for your encouraging
words, Jessie! For me, I know I will have a
greater sense of appreciation and optimism for
the future of Spring Creek the next time I take
a drive over the summit!
Khoury's
Wine of the Month
Wine making has happened in this country just about as
long as this country has been a country!
Ben Franklin knew about it. So did George
Washington, Abe Lincoln and Alexander
Hamilton. Aaron Burr should have stopped to
enjoy a nice glass of Zinfandel, maybe then he
might not have behaved the way that he did.
Anyway, American made wines are just that,
American as Old Glory herself.
So, what could be better to take to your
Independence Day BBQ than good ole’ USA
made vino!
Don’t let the Party affiliation scare you. The
Federalist’s opposed anti-Federalists who
really were the Democratic-Republicans, The
Democratic-Republicans opposed each other,
the Whigs opposed what they said the day
before and Kim Kardashian opposes the color
of the carpet in the oval office.
None of that matters. Grab a bottle of American
made Federalist wine and declare yourself;
The Leader of The PARTY PARTY!
You believe in a good time and oppose those
who drag you down. You stand for life, liberty
and the pursuit of a juicy burger to go with that
wine. You are the pioneer of the 4th of July
block party! And you won’t be held back.
NOT kill the grass. The paint is
construction marking paint, it's
intended to be sprayed upside
very quickly and is permanent. It
only comes off as the grass grows
out and you mow it off.
THE Pygmy RABBIT
THE
SMALLEST
RABBIT
SPECIES IN
NORTH
AMERICA
AND FIT
EASILY IN
THE PALM
OF A HAND.
The pygmy rabbit, Brachylagus
idahoensis, is the smallest rabbit
species in North America and fit
easily in the palm of a hand. They
weigh between 0.88 to 1.01 lb. They
are 9.25 to 11.6 inches long. Their
fur color varies from brown to dark
grey with white around the margins
of their short, round ears. Their ears
and feet are densely covered in hair
and they have a very short tail. Pygmy
Rabbits have an entirely gray-brown
tail, instead of the familiar white
underside of the tail that is present in
all cottontail (Sylvilagus) species.
Pygmy rabbits are mainly found in
big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata)
habitats and in some rabbitbrush
communities. They are the only
rabbit species in North America to
dig their own burrows. Burrows are
dug in deep loose soil with multiple,
interconnecting chambers. They also
use natural cavities and the burrows
of other animals. Burrows have
several entrances, usually at the bases
of large sagebrush shrubs. Pygmy
rabbits use a system of runways
between food plants, both above
ground in the summer and below the
snow in winter. They move close to
the ground and generally don’t leap.
Pygmy rabbits produce several
vocalizations characterized as
squeals, squeaks, and chuckles.
They squeal when alarmed. They eat
mostly sagebrush with up to 98% of
their winter diet being sagebrush. In
the summer and spring months their
diet can include up to 40% grasses
and forbs in addition to sagebrush.
They are active throughout the year
mainly at dusk and dawn. Predators
of the pygmy rabbit include weasels,
coyotes, raptors, badgers, bobcats,
and humans.
Field surveys are currently being
conducted to determine the
abundance and distribution of pygmy
rabbits in northern and central
Nevada. Miranda Crowell, PhD
student at University of Nevada, Reno,
has been studying the pygmy rabbit. She and her
team have partnered with NDOW, BLM, USFWS,
USFS, the Great Basin LCC and the Greater Hart-
Sheldon Conservation Fund. Pygmy rabbit’s
changes in population sizes, densities, and longterm
movement are relatively understudied and
unknown range-wide. This project encompasses
many aspects of pygmy rabbit ecology such as
genetic and habitat connectivity. Since 2016, they
have been conducting mark-recapture studies
at 5 sites across the Great Basin to investigate
changing population densities, as well as a crude
view of short-term and long-term movements by
recaptured individuals. Over the past 2 years,
they have also discovered that these populations
are shifting around the study sites, rendering
some burrow systems inactive, and digging new
ones in other places. Miranda will be giving a
presentation on this research at the Bristlecone
Audubon meeting on Friday, July 13, 2018 at
7:00 p.m. in room 208 of the DCIT Building at
Landscape
& Gardening
for Northern Nevada
Contributed by Marvel Clyde, Colorscapes
We're all looking for plants that are easy to
grow so we can spend more time enjoying
them and less time maintaining them. So,
here's the challenge to people looking for
plants to enrich their lives:
Prior planning prevents poor performance.
The time and energy spent on the design and
preparing for planting will always define the
difference between plants that thrive and
plants that dive.
Start with a design that includes garden areas
with shrubs and perennials and then select and
group plants that have the same light, soil, and water
requirements. Do your homework so you can shop with
a list of possibilities. Pictures of the area or a picture
from a magazine that appeals to you are also ways to
increase your chances of finding just the right plants;
but be flexible and willing to try plants suggested by a
trusted retailer. Gardening is for those of us who love to
be around plants in general and enjoy spending time
outside caring for them and landscaping is designing
with plants to fit the right plants in the right place to
minimize maintenance chores.
Designing for curb appeal determines how
others see your landscape in passing, sets the
tone for a welcoming entrance for you and your guests,
and increases the value of your property. The backyard
is where we tend to kick off our shoes and spend time
relaxing outside enjoying container gardens, perennial
gardens for seasonal color, and large shrubs as garden
backdrops and vertical elements that provide privacy
and a sense of enclosure as we avoid views and noises
from intrusive surroundings. On the design, the average
garden depth is two-thirds of the mature height of the
tallest planting. Ex: A design that includes shrubs that
mature at a height of 9' look best in a garden that is a
minimum of 6' in depth. With a larger lot size, that depth
can be extended to include small trees that mature to
a full 25’. I advocate using a mix rather than a single
variety planting in an effort to create diversity in the
landscape that will also be appealing to a wider range of
beneficials. Adding a mix of perennials further increases
the overall beauty and chances to attract and sustain
birds, bees, butterflies, and a host of beneficials that
add to the sensory pleasures of being outside and keep
pests in check.
Establish edges to define where the gardens
within the landscape begin and end. Edging
is available in a range of materials. Criteria can include
ease of installation, durability, aesthetic qualities, and
availability for future installations. Using consistent
edging material for nearby areas as they're developed
adds continuity to the site. Garden walls and other
raised bed designs hold soil in place and add a threedimensional
element to an otherwise one-dimensional/
flat view of the garden. Lawn areas will encroach
into garden beds regardless of border edging, so be
prepared for that inevitability.
Improve soil for plant root development and
water conservation. I work new beds 10-12
inches in depth with a tiller, topdress with 2-3 inches of
organic amendments, and then bring the tiller tines up
to incorporate the amendments into the top 4-6 inches
of soil. Machinery can be rented or digging by hand is
always an option. The time and energy spent breaking
up compacted soil and preparing a garden area for
planting will always pay off in the long run. I prefer to
use organic amendments since they feed both the soil
and the plants. Rejuvenating an existing garden? Start
by digging out weeds and weedy looking plants that
don't fit into the design; if it's a really cool plant, lift out
for saving, otherwise, toss it. We don't use ground fabric
in the gardens, ever, but we do use it under the washed
gravel in the outdoor retail areas and under bark in the
gazebo area.
Topdress with a slow-release fertilizer and 2-4
inches of mulch. I apply a 14-14-14 slow-release
fertilizer combined with iron at the rate of one pound
per 100 sq.ft. of garden area. Literally defined, mulch
means a protective covering spread on the ground to
reduce evaporation and suppress weeds. Mulches often
include chipped or shredded bark, rubber (yuck!), and
given the creative forces behind gardening, the list goes
on. I use mulch between perennials and shrubs in the
gardens after cutting back the perennials in late fall. So,
you might be asking yourself, "What's the difference
between adding an amendment and using mulch?",
short answer, not much. Typically, amendments are
incorporated before planting, and mulch is used after.
Mulch before when planting plants in 6" or smaller pots
fairly close to one another and after planting bigger
perennials and shrubs. Mulching is an important step
since it will deter weeds, conserve water, and improve
the tilth of the soil. Gardeners have their own favorite, I
like those that break down within two seasons, feeding
the soil and the organisms that make healthy plants
possible. Gravel as mulch in the gardens is preferred by
xeric plants and designs that include rock gardens.
44 www.EverythingElko.com | July 2018
Establish how the garden will be most easily,
yet efficiently, watered. In-ground systems
with flexible poly and rigid risers are easy to install,
manageable, and reliable, but, risk saturating blooms
with water and can block/deflect water to mid and back
sections of the garden as plants mature. Connected
emitters on a drip system, low-volume soaker hoses,
and drip tube systems are water-wise, but need to be
constantly monitored to ensure that they are delivering
enough water to thoroughly soak the entire root zone of
all plantings. Water timers at the faucet can be used to
deliver water intermittently. Last fall I replaced 750 feet
of soaker hoses. After 20 years, it was simply time for this
needed chore.
Water newly planted gardens thoroughly and
frequently until established. Even water-wise
plants need to be kept evenly moist while roots work their
way into the soil, especially those planted in the heat of
summer. Once established, after one full growing season,
continue to water thoroughly, but less frequently. All plants
need a supply of oxygen to the roots, so avoid overwatering
once plants are established. As temperatures
rise in July and August, we increase watering to every five
days. With our 12 gardens, using an excel spread sheet
to schedule watering days. A deep, thorough watering is
better than light, frequent watering in the gardens and for
lawn areas. The days of set it-forget it are long gone. Let
the weather determine whether to water. Rule of thumb:
10 gallons per week per inch of tree diameter.
Avoid the use of chemicals to eradicate weeds
and insects. It's a buggy world, but they're not all
bad guys. The use of chemicals in the home landscape has
been the leading cause of the decline in beneficial insects
that keep populations of detrimental insects in check. In
driveway areas, weed burners provide a safer alternative
to spraying. Pulling weeds is part of gardening and if
you get them before they go to seed, the chore is made
exponentially easier. Keeping invasive grass mowed will
reduce breeding grounds for pests and also lessen the risk
of wildfire spread as summer temps rise and grasses dry.
Water-wise landscaping/xeriscape incorporates
seven landscape principles that make a lowmaintenance,
water-wise landscape both attractive and
attainable:
Thoughtful planning, improving soil conditions, limiting
turf areas, mulching, grouping plants with similar water
needs, efficient irrigation, and maintenance including
weeding, pruning, and scheduled fertilizing. I believe
that most mortalities in the landscape can be directed
to the amount of water a plant needs vs. the amount of
water a plant gets. Water-wise plants have adapted over
many years to hold the water they need in their roots
and foliage. Pubescent foliage with its fine hairs, traps
moisture, narrow leaves also tend to require less water.
An example of a xeric (zir-ik) plant; is Cerastium 'Snow in
Summer'.
Avoid the overwhelming task of taking on the
entire landscape in one season. Divide the
landscape into areas (some designers refer to these areas
as rooms) and fully develop one area before moving
onto the next. Start with a plan, it can be sketched onto a
napkin or precisely drawn to scale. You can do it yourself,
or have it professionally done, either way, it's a necessary
start to a successful finish.
Bringing the beauty of
nature to Northern Nevada
There are lots of great books out there on
landscaping/gardening. I would recommend:
Taylor's Master Guide to Landscaping by Rita
Buchanan. This is a great book. The pictures and
text are so well done with easy and practical
advice on adding new gardens and hardscapes
along with "makeovers" for problem solving.
Backyard Design, Making the Most of the
Space Around Your House by Jean Spiro
Breskend. I leave this book outside through
the summer and look at it whenever I have
a chance to sit and relax under the gazebo.
The pictures give me ideas on how to balance
time:energy:space:design in my own backyard.
TRAVEL
History
Contributed by Sue Bradford of
48 www.EverythingElko.com | July 2018
If history is what you are looking for in your next vacation, then look no further than Athens.
A city rich in history and culture, Athens is a must see for any European vacation.
Most people do have a love-hate
relationship to Greece's capital. On
one hand it is a city with a wide variety
of things to see and do. From here you
can also get to most places in Greece:
by air, train, boat or bus. On the other
hand it is a huge, busy place with about
half of Greece's population living there
(close to 5 million), which leads to
problems with traffic jams and pollution,
especially the smog. It is a fascinating
place, though. It is one of the oldest
cities in the world and walking through
its ancient Agora or on the Acropolis,
it does make you feel you are walking
on, if not sacred, very important
ground. Many historic areas of Athens
have been made for pedestrians
only, like the whole Area around
Acropolis, as well as the Ermou Street,
the main shopping street of Athens.
WHAT TO DO THERE
The first place you should visit when
in Athens is of course the Acropolis.
Standing up there, on the sacred rock
as the Greeks call it, you can practically
feel the magnificence of ancient
Greece. Don't think you'll be alone
there though.
Other archaeological sites are
the agora, the market, with the
temple to Hephaistos still in quite
good shape, as well as the temple
to Zeus and the arch of Hadrian.
Museums of interest are the Acropolis
museum, the National Archeological
museum, the Folklore museum, the
Ceramics museum (Keramikos), the
Byzantine museum, the Music museum,
the War museum, and the Benaki
museum. All in all, there are about 50
museums in Athens.
A popular place for shopping or food
and drink is Plaka, just below the
Acropolis. It is considered quite a
touristy area, but the fact is that you
here can get an idea of old Athens,
with low buildings and little streets. In
Monastiraki there is a bazaar which is
quite incredible and considered to be a
must stop for shopping.
At the Syntagma Square you can visit
the Tomb of the Unknown soldier.
Here you can see the guards in their
impressing uniforms, the Evzones, and
if you are lucky you will see the slow
and complicated change of guards.
Interestingly, there used to be a tomb
to the unknown hero in ancient Athens
as well.
There are also several beaches at
Athens Riviera The most popular ones
are in Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza,
Nea Makri, Crysi Akti (Golden Coast ),
Lagonisi, Kavouri and Alimos. Most of
the beaches in Athens are organized
and you have to pay a small entrance
fee to these beaches. This is to keep
them clean since they have millions of
visitors every summer.
Building Unity
through
Community Service
“Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.”
—Booker T. Washington, African American Civil Rights Leader
When it comes to community
service, most often it is thought
that the organization or person
being served as receiving the
greatest benefit. Research,
however, indicates that service
also benefits those who volunteer
and serve others.
A 2007 report from the
Corporation for National and
Community Service outlines
the many physical and mental
health benefits of volunteering,
including helping to overcome
depression, a better quality of
life, and living longer.
In a more recent (2017) study,
Professor Laura M. Padilla-
Walker, of the School of Family
Life, Brigham Young University,
documents the benefits for teens
who serve, especially when
serving strangers. The benefits
cited in the research brief include
increased self-esteem, protection
from getting involved in problem
behaviors, and developing a
moral identity.
Often when we hear “community
service” or “service project”
we think of something big like
a food or clothing drive, Elko’s
Green Up, Clean Up day, or
even the community coming
together when a disaster
strikes, such as last year’s flood
and fires. These are important
projects and a time when the
community members unite. Not
all service and volunteer efforts
have to be large scale efforts,
volunteers are needed every day.
By volunteering regularly, we
can strengthen the unity of our
community every day, as well as
reap the benefits of service.
So, where does one find
meaningful service? The answer
is: JustServe.org, a website
created specifically to connect
organizations with volunteers.
JustServe.org is a free community
resource where participating
organizations visit the website
to post service needs to a
wide range of volunteers; and
volunteers visit the website to
locate service opportunities that
best fit their interests, skills, and
availability.
JustServe has been available in
Elko for approximately four years
but has gained momentum in
recent months with a wider range
of faith, nonprofit, community,
and government organizations
posting their volunteer needs
“I have been involved in a few
JustServe.org projects in Elko,”
relates Brian Boyd. “One memorable
project was installing privacy slats in
an elementary school fence, so the
children could play, out of sight of
traffic. The school personnel provided
all the supplies and were very grateful
for my help, even though I could
only spend one afternoon there. My
experience has always been positive
with each organization, and I feel good
giving back to my community.”
to the website. As more organizations and
volunteers are using the site, it is easier to
match the needs with the volunteers.
At times volunteers with special skills, such
as sewing, carpentry, or photography are
needed, but there are many projects that
just need someone to lend a helping hand
for any amount of time the volunteer has to
serve.
JustServe strives to be a win-winwin
for all—the organization needing
volunteers, the volunteer, and
ultimately building unity within the
community.
CBD
WHAT IS CBD?
CBD is a natural constituent of hemp that
has been shown to have positive health
benefits, without causing psychoactive
effects.
CBD-rich hemp provides a legal alternative
to medical marijuana and allows the
consumer to enjoy the benefits of CBD
without the risk of getting high.
Since CBD has no psychoactive effect, it
is an excellent option for people seeking
the benefits of cannabis products without
breaking federal law or risking impairment.
CBD HEALTH BENEFITS
CBD has been the subject of
several health-related studies.
We have highlighted
several of the of the
findings below:
NEUROPROTECTIVE BENEFITS OF CBD
A 2015 study found that CBD may be
neuroprotective in adult and neonatal
ischemia, brain trauma, Alzheimer’s
disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s
chorea, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
(Lou Gehrig's disease).
THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF
digital
deto
Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell of
Ruby Mountain Chiropractic
Feel like phones are ruining family time? While a physical lock and chain may
be unrealistic, institute a no phone policy during meals together.
Living in a world awash in technology can make life easier in some respects, but it can
also be enslaving and detrimental to health and relationships. Whether we spend hours
texting and tweeting or surfing and gaming, tech time can potentially become addictive.
The average Facebooker spends 2-3 hours a day in the digital world in 30-40
minute increments. That’s about 42 days out of the year.
There’s no doubt that technology can play a vital role in our workday and everyday life.
There are times though when a break is in order.
Here are five ways to institute a digital detox:
1. Put away phones and other devices
at mealtimes. By turning your phone
or tablet off while eating with family
and friends, you’re cultivating critical
bonds with each other. That’s priceless.
Consider setting a bucket on the
counter that everyone puts their
devices in from 6 pm to 9 pm.
2. Take a holiday from technology during
your travels. Whether you’re tempted
to post a picture from Paris or tweet
a review of a fabulous restaurant
in Rome, resist the urge. Instead,
experience your vacation with the
people you’re with.
68
www.EverythingElko.com | July 2018
3. Put to bed blue light distractions.
Consider powering down your phone
and other devices at least one hour
before your head hits the pillow. You’ll
likely unwind easier and may sleep
better as you won’t be exposed to
the blue light from your gadgets. Your
sleep plays a vital role in your healing
and repairs from your day.
4. Impose a daily limit on tech time.
Consider checking your email fewer
times a day, going on social
media less and turning your
phone off by a specific
time at night.
5. Fill your technology-free
time. Imagine all the things
you can do when technology
isn’t sneakily stealing your time.
Relax, get together with friends
or family, exercise, take a trip, learn
something new or volunteer. The options
are seemingly endless.
While it’s unrealistic that we’ll adopt a monasticlike
existence without worldly distractions,
occasional or regular digital detoxes can nourish
the mind and body. For another form of detox,
optimally by scheduling an appointment with us
Elko would not exist without the hard work,
contributions and collaborative efforts of
committed community volunteers. For many
years, Nevada's law enforcement agencies lead
the way in contributions, fund-raising events
and volunteering their personal time to support
our athletes. Our Elko area law enforcement
agencies are a committed group of professionals
including Elko County Sheriff's Office, Elko Police
Department, Nevada Highway Patrol and other
northeastern Nevada agencies. Sheriff Jim Pitts
has been a leader in supporting Nevada's Special
Olympic athletes for many years. Our local law
enforcement agencies raise more funds than
any other group with The Torch Run, Special
Olympics Polar Plunge, Tip-a-Cop and our
celebrated Cops and Burgers event. Local area
merchants, led by Gold Dust West, Ledgestone
Hotel and TownePlace Suites, support our local
program each year. It is the continued support of
Telescope Lanes (bowling) and Elko High School
(track and field) that allow our athletes the facilities
to train and prepare for their competitions.
Spring Creek High School's KEY CLUB raised
money and traveled to Reno for Summer Games
to volunteer their time to ensure our athletes
were safe and well taken care of at Summer
Games. Their enthusiasm was contagious as
they escorted athletes from event to event at the
athletic venue. A big thank you to Coach USA
and Frederick Becker for transporting us safely
to our events. Our athletes would have never
trained nor traveled and competed without our
invaluable Special Olympics volunteer coaches
from Elko. They accounted for and kept safe all
of our athletes during our travel, over-night stays
and during competition. Coaches Tami, Barb,
long jump, shot put and the 100 meter dash at
the track and field competition. Ryan competed
in regional and state competitions and continues
to train for his July competition in Seattle. ESPN
Driving a haul truck for a Nevada mining
company may pay the bills, but one
woman’s thoughts turn skyward between
moving loads of gold ore. For 26-year-old
Raquel Holguin of Elko, one flight lesson
10 years ago sparked a dream of soaring
above the earth from which she now
makes a living.
Her dream of becoming a pilot is
much closer to reality since being
selected on May 17 to receive the 2017
Sauveur and Julie Elizagoyen Memorial
Aviation Scholarship. She was one of six
applicants last year.
Raquel is the first female recipient of
the scholarship established by Norma
Elizagoyen shortly before her death in
2013 to honor her husband, Sauveur, and
daughter, Julie, both of whom preceded
her in death. Father and daughter shared
a love of flying.
Raquel had the gumption to make her
own way in life, living mostly on her own
since she was 16 years old, going to
school while working and living paycheck
to paycheck. That determination may
explain why she never abandoned her
belief that she could learn to fly and
thereby expand her career opportunities.
“It was tough to have to put my dreams
on hold,” she said.
Asked about her thoughts on being the
first female recipient of the scholarship,
Raquel stated simply, “Well, it’s about
time,” and laughed. She offered advice
thinking about flying or applying for
the scholarship. “Don’t hold back,” she
said. “It can’t hurt to do it if that’s your
passion.”
Raquel considers earning her private
pilot’s license the first step to a career as
a commercial pilot. She is open to taking
courses from a school of aviation but will
probably continue taking flight lessons to
improve her skills for now.
After she gets her license, Raquel said
that getting more hours in the air will
become her top priority. She said she will
get a second job if that’s what it takes.
“Whenever I get an idea in my head – and
I’ve always been this way,” she said, “I’m
pretty headstrong about going through
with it. Even if it takes years to get it
done, it’s still there for me, and I’ll always
make it happen. You only get one life and
you should be doing what you want.”
About the Sauveur & Julie Elizagoyen
Memorial Aviation Scholarship
The Sauveur and Julie Elizagoyen Memorial
Aviation Scholarship was established in 2013
by Norma Elizagoyen (1923-2013) in loving
memory of her husband and daughter and as
a tribute to them and their love for flying.
Sauveur Elizagoyen (1930-2010) immigrated
to the United States in 1950 where he
worked as a sheepherder in California and
Nevada. With hard work and determination,
he became a general contractor in 1958 and
built many fine homes and businesses in the
Elko, Nevada area as well as owning other
businesses. In 2004, Sauveur decided to retire
his hammer and saw and pursue his passions
for flying his airplane, hunting, and fishing.
Julie Elizagoyen (1961-2011) was born in
Elko, Nevada and spent most of her life here.
She spent time in the ranching industry, then
studied and became a dental assistant in
California and Nevada. She returned to Elko
and spent her remaining years helping with
the family business.
Julie was always taking on challenges. She
received her commercial pilot's license and
instrument rating after several years of serious
work and study, then helped her father gain
his license to fly.
The family sold the family airplane. After the
deaths of Sauveur and later Julie, Norma
created this scholarship program to help
others realize the passion for flying enjoyed
by her husband and daughter. Norma passed
away January 12, 2013. However, the legacy
of her family and its commitment and love
for each other, as well as Sauveur and Julie's
love for flying, will live on with this scholarship,
enabling many to enjoy the dream of flying.
The annual scholarship will help those who dream of becoming pilots by paying a
portion of the cost of flight instruction and ground school.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and a U.S. citizen residing in Elko County.
BALLOONING FACTS
How big
are hot air
balloons?
Hot air balloons vary in size
from 14,000 cubic feet - with
a payload of one person - to
750,000 cubic feet - enough
to carry 32 people. These
balloons range in height from
40 feet to 130 feet.
With the wind determining
the direction of flight, the pilot
uses different air currents at
different altitudes to maneuver
the balloon. Balloon speed is
determined by the wind speed
at different locations.
DIY CRAFT
Patriotic
Streamers
Lead your own
neighborhood parade in
style! Tie some streamers
and balloons to your stroller
and help your kids decorate
their bike or scooter
with these DIY patriotic
streamers.
log.urbansitter.com | AlphaMom
Supplies:
- A pair of toilet paper tubes
- Curling ribbon and/or crepe
paper streamers
- Inexpensive water-based children’s
poster paint in patriotic colors
- Star stickers
- Paint brushes
- Stapler and/or normal household tape
To Create:
1. Have kids paint the tubes one color –the
base coat. (Resist mixing colors since
you’ll end up with purple or pink instead
of the red white and blue theme!).
2. Once base coat is dry, let them decorate
the tube by painting on stars, stripes,
flags, hearts, whatever else says 4th of
July. And adding stickers, too.
3. Once everything is dry, staple and/or tape
the streamers or curling ribbon in strips to
the end of the tubes. Curl the ribbons.
4. Slip the decorated tubes of streamers
over the ends of your child’s handle bars,
and voila, patriotic streamers!
STATE FARM'S GOOD NEIGHBOR JULY 2018
Perhaps you have spent an afternoon sifting through all
of the fun treasures at the FISH thrift store, or maybe you
have taken your coffee table that you no longer use or
the pile of skinny jeans from high school that you swore
you would fit into again to be donated and resold, but
have you ever looked farther than that at FISH? What
other programs do they offer, what else is it that they
do? After my time with Executive Director Sherry Smith
I can tell you that they do so much more than I realized.
During Sherry’s two years as the
Executive Director of FISH (which stands
for Friends in Service Helping) there have
been a variety of changes to existing
programs that the organization offers as
well as some new programs started. FISH
serves all of Elko County and surrounding
areas. They generate income through
their thrift store, grant funds, and
donations from generous donors in the
community. These funds help to assist
the organization in being able to provide
programs like emergency food, soup
kitchen, laundry services, holiday meal
program, Samaritan house, showers
and hygiene supplies, stranded travelers
aid, U.S.D.A. Commodity distribution,
senior food box program, emergency
clothing vouchers, medical/prescription
assistance, and employment required
needs assistance. As you can see from
this list the work they do is helping
families in Elko County that are in crisis
fill their immediate needs and create a
plan for the long term so that they can
become self-sufficient in the future.
The soup kitchen at FISH is open four days
a week for hot meals. They also provide
food to families and individuals through
the emergency food box program,
and U.S.D.A. commodities program. In
2017 FISH had 11,639 requests for food
assistance. During their holiday food
box program alone they gave out 260
food boxes. All of this work makes sure
that families in our community will not
go hungry and that they will have the
energy they need to work at their jobs,
or do well in school. Recently FISH has
started to have Farmers Markets monthly
for their clients. This is an opportunity for
those in need to go and get fresh fruits
and vegetables. This is open to all clients
of FISH.
The holiday food box and gift program
for children/seniors provides a way
for children, seniors, and those with
disabilities have a full holiday with food
to eat and gifts to open. This program
starts in October when families can
make requests for a holiday box, and
the holiday gift program. The holiday
food box program served 260 families
last year. It is through the generosity of
community members adopting families
that FISH was able to serve 113 families
for the gift program for families in need
last year. They also work together with
other organizations in the community to
make sure that there is not duplication in
recipients.
The Samaritan House Emergency Shelter
is open Monday-Sunday from 6:00 pm to
8:00 am. They provide and evening meal
and breakfast to those that stay at the
house. It provides a place for families
86 www.EverythingElko.com | July 2018
or individuals to come out of the elements with the
knowledge that they will have a safe place to rest for
the night. The Samaritan House is a clean and sober
safe home. They will only accept people to stay at the
house that are not under the influence of any alcohol
or drugs.
FISH has also partnered with government agencies
to provide a venue and opportunity for people to
have access to sign up for programs directly at FISH
on a monthly basis. Twice a month the welfare office
is at FISH to assist individuals in obtaining benefits
or maintaining their benefits. They also have had
visits with Nevada Legal Services to assist families. In
addition, FISH is an intake site for the energy assistance
program. Dates for when these entities will be at FISH
can be found on their Facebook page or website. If
you have not already taken the opportunity to like
and follow the Facebook page for both FISH and the
separate page for FISH Thrift Store, I highly recommend
you do so! Through the Thrift Store page you can find
out when they are having fun sales, or promotions.
FISH would be nowhere without their volunteers. If
neighbor
you would like to help volunteer for FISH there are
opportunities at the Thrift Store, Food Bank, Soup
Kitchen, Driver, General Maintenance and any other
special talents. To become a volunteer reach out to
This is in no way a full picture of all of the amazing
things that FISH does. They provide showers, and
hygiene products to those that do not have access to
them. The list goes on. The incredible work that Sherry
and her team do for the clients that they serve could
not be recognized enough. We want to send out a
heartfelt thank you from Shabonya Dutton State Farm
MICROCHIPS
The most reliable
prevention of
homeless pets
Contributed by Elko Veterinary Clinic
At one point or another we have all heard about animal microchips,
and many of us have brushed it aside due to cost, or believing in our pets
security to our persons and our home. But, how many of us have had a lost
pet restored to our families BECAUSE of a simple thing like a microchip?
A simple microchip can make the difference in a lost pet’s fate!
Did You Know?
By a simple subcutaneous implantation of the
microchip into the skin between your pets’
shoulder blades, you are then secured to
your pet via an indestructible, non-corruptible
and unique method of pet ownership and
re-location. According to the Home Again
Microchip database, 1 in 3 household pets in
the US will get lost, and 90% of un-identified
pets never make it home. Currently, only 3-4%
dogs, and less that 1% of cats, that are found,
or reported and picked up, have microchips
and are able to be traced back to their families.
A simple and cost-effective solution on a pet
owner’s part could drastically increase these
homeless stats for the better, and decrease the
amount of lost pets in our rescues and shelters.
90 www.EverythingElko.com | July 2018
How It Works
Two of the most common microchip companies
in the US are 24 Hour PetWatch, and Home
Again. Both of these companies also expand
their services for clients and pets registered with
them into pet insurance, travel assistance, and
access to Pet Poison Control hotlines. Microchips
in many cases are required for travel in and out of
the country, and they a very highly recommended
case for those that travel a lot with their human
family members. Home Again offers microchip
activated feeders and dog/cat doors, which are
fantastic for multi-family, indoor and outdoor fur
babies. A pet with either of these companies do
not need to be registered with every microchip
company in the country either…when a pet is
scanned and found to have a microchip, the
number is specific to the microchip manufacturer.
Your information is kept private by the company,
because your pet is identified and registered by a
unique ID number that is attached to your contact
information in a secure database, and you are
contacted by the microchip company when your
pet is found.
A difference, in some cases, can be made
from death to life for our family pets that
wander or escape from our homes. The
small cost of a microchip ensures the
ability that diligent animal servants in our
communities can return our dogs and cats
home to us, after a simple scan and the
relief that follows when we discover that a
pet is microchipped.
Microchips are RFIDs, no GPS
chips, so they emit their unique
ID when scanned, and do
not continuously emit a
tracking signal. Thanks to
advancements of shelter
and hospital procedures,
scanning for a microchip is
the first step a found pet is
taken through. The microchip
is a permanent implant and
does not need to be repeated, and
is an easy 5-10 minute out-patient procedure
performed by your veterinarian. Most fees include
implant charges, and the first year of membership
with the microchip company and life long
registration for the life of the pet. Given this case,
it is still always recommended that your pet have a
tag and harness or collar version of identification
at all times, even when left at home, since this will
always be the most traditional and visible version
of pet ownership and identification.
