Maya
Coast
Looking down to the Caribbean Sea from
forty-foot cliffs, the ruined city of Tulum
in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula was one of
the last strongholds of the Maya. Inhabited
until the sixteenth century, Tulum was
rediscovered in the nineteenth and restored
in the twentieth. Long after it was built,
the Temple of Winds still guards Tulum’s
seaward approach.
