Brief History and Culture of Maui
Maui honors its past, amidst its natural beauty and visitor attractions. The chapters in Maui’s history are well documented
and each culture weaves the fabric of today’s experiences.
Lahaina is a town of major historical significance. Once the first capitol of the Kingdom of Hawaii, a busy whaling port, and
a plantation settlement, you can still walk in the footsteps of Lahaina’s past. The Lahaina Historic Trail, is a self-guided tour
throughout Lahaina’s historic districts. The Baldwin Home was the two-story house of Protestant missionaries in the mid-
1830s. Anachronistic structures like the Wo Hing Temple and the Lahaina Jodo Mission highlight the influences of Chinese
and Japanese immigrants in Maui.
Famous aviator Charles Lindbergh was laid to rest in 1974 in an isolated cemetery on the slopes of Haleakala, 12 miles
beyond Hana, in Kipahulu. This simple gravesite of the man who in 1927, became the first aviator to fly solo across the
Atlantic, is an oasis of gentle peace and quiet. The cemetery is located next to the Palapala Hoʻomau Church, a limestone
and coral structure which was built in 1857.
Life takes on a simpler nature in places like Upcountry Maui and towns like Makawao. Sprawling ranches and the paniolos
(cowboys) who still work them today, have an important place in Maui history, along with plantations and missionaries.
Things To Do
Bike the Volcano
One of the most unique opportunities
afforded by Maui’s tropical landscape
is downhill biking along the slopes
Haleakala Volcano. You’ll be taken to
the top of the 10,000+ foot summit for
a stunning sunrise above the clouds
before starting your adventure from the
base of Haleakala National Park. While
not for the faint of heart (or legs), the
views from this incredible adventure
are unlike any other on Maui. See
the beauty of Maui’s barren volcanic
landscape as it transforms into the lush
hills of Upcountry Maui. Perfect for
adventurous families, couples, groups
of friends or solo travelers!
Road to Hana
Touted as one of the world’s best road
trips, we absolutely recommend the Road
to Hana for its many hidden gems and
natural attractions, including cascading
waterfalls, bamboo forests, jungle hiking
trails, lava tubes, exotic beaches, scenic
overlooks, tropical gardens, historic
sites, and much more. Take a look into
the Hawaii of the past on this gorgeous,
winding drive, and remember - it’s not
about the destination, but the journey!
Whether you choose to drive it yourself
or take a guided tour, it’s an experience
that simply cannot be missed.
Maui Rappelling
Heads up, thrill-seekers! Rappel Maui
offers a completely unique experience
on Maui, and one that we highly
recommend for those seeking a true
jungle adventure in the Aloha State.
After hiking through a private 30-acre
botanical garden along the Road to
Hana, guests will learn how to rappel
down a 60 foot jungle cliff, 50 foot
waterfall and 30 foot waterfall, followed
by a dip in the natural pool. Professional
guides will walk you through each
step of the process, and have taught
thousands of successful guests of all
levels. Amazingly fun!
Maui Snorkeling
With vast populations of marine
life, shallow coral reefs and a variety
of amazing spots to choose from,
snorkeling in Maui is one of the best
ocean activities available. While some of
the most popular snorkeling spots can
be reached from shore, we recommend
joining a private or group tour for a
guide to some of the best locations,
or for anyone who isn’t comfortable in
the ocean. Remember to always snorkel
with a buddy, and avoid swimming in
murky conditions or touching any coral
or marine life. See the beauty of Maui
under the surface!
Cannabis: An Amazing Healer…The Long & Winding Road To Respectability.
Written by Kelley Aiyana, LCSW
(Kelley coordinates state of Hawaii medical cannabis certification services with Maui physician Dr. Irving Brown at her psychotherapy office in Kihei, Maui)
1. The medicinal use of cannabis dates back thousands of years to ancient China, India and Egypt. Cannabis was entered into the US
Pharmacopeia in 1850 as a treatment for: Neuralgia, Tetanus, Typhus, Cholera, Rabies. Dysentery, Opiate addiction, Anthrax, Hanson’s
disease (called Leprosy at that time), Incontinence, Snakebite, Gout, Seizure disorder, Tonsillitis, Insanity, Excessive menstrual
bleeding, Uterine bleeding. It was widely available in pharmacies and even grocery stores.
2. Years later with the rise in popularity of new synthetic drugs, opium derived drugs and other factors including business interests &
government propaganda campaigns, laws against cannabis use were passed and eventually it was removed from the US Pharmacopeia
in 1941. A few years earlier in 1936 in preparation for the removal, the film “Reefer Madness” was released as propaganda
to instill fear and stigma into society for many generations. Now it has been made into plays and musicals performed in live theatre
mocking the absurdity of the lies. It wasn’t until 1970 when President Nixon moving against the increasingly popular use of marijuana,
associated marijuana with “liberal Jews,” “hippies” and college students who were protesters of the Vietnam Nam war and
autocratically classified cannabis as a “controlled substance.” This put cannabis into the most dangerous drug category stating it has
a high risk of addiction and abuse and no longer recognizing it as having any medicinal benefit. He even assigned a commission to
“prove” the lack of evidence for medical use and appointed strong anti-drug warriors to do this. In the end they were all surprisingly
convinced that it indeed had medical use and should not be criminalized. But Nixon would not accept this and they were made to
change the findings which means lie about what they found. This led to “all out war on drugs” and since then more than 5 million
people have been arrested for marijuana offenses with many arrests made with machine guns and military style raids.
3. Additionally, this prevented much needed research and treatments for patients with pain, seizure disorders, cancer, PTSD and many
other conditions. After years of accruing evidence in favor of medicinal cannabis, in 1988 Chief Administrator Law Judge Francis L
Young from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) ruled in favor of moving cannabis to a less restrictive category stating:
4. “Marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substance known to man” and “the evidence in the record clearly
shows that marijuana has been accepted as capable of relieving the distress of great numbers of very ill people…It would be unreasonable,
arbitrary and capricious for the DEA to stand between the sufferers and the benefits of this substance in light of the evidence in this record.”
As ridiculous as it sounds, however, he was overruled by the head of the DEA (4) and it continues to remain on federal record that
cannabis has no medicinal benefit. NO MEDICINAL BENEFIT!!! Unbelievable!
5. Fast forward to now, currently 29 states have medical marijuana laws and many more have some limited form of legalization. It may
be a surprise but it is reported that seniors are the fastest growing group of new medical cannabis users because it works for them.
Researchers from University of Georgia found seniors who use medical cannabis often use fewer prescription drugs for painful joints,
arthritis and other aches and pains.
6. Out of the 783,936 annual deaths from conventional medicine mistakes, approximately 106,000 of those are the result of prescription
drug use [1]. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, two-hundred and ninety people in the United
States are killed by prescription drugs every day Note the DEA reports year after year that there are no deaths caused by cannabis.
7. That’s amazing given the amount of deaths caused by commonly prescribed drugs.
8. In addition to the physical symptoms and illnesses that medical cannabis treats, it has been found to help negative emotional states
as well. Carl Sagan, a long-time cannabis advocate and NASA consultant and advisor famously stated: “The illegality of cannabis
is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce serenity and insight sensitivity and fellowship so
desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world.” - Carl Sagan - 1934 - 1996 (Astronomer, Astrophysicist, writer,
professor at Cornell University and Harvard and narrator & co-writer of public tv series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage).
Valley), if you want to do the entire hike.
If you’re not in the mood for hiking, local companies offer tours
via helicopter and boat.
Koke’e State Park
Just north of Waimea Canyon State Park, Koke’e State Park is
a great park for hiking.
There are seven major hiking trails in Koke’e State Park:
Napali Coast State Wilderness Park
Beautiful views grace Napali Coast State Park. The na pali (high
cliffs) reach as much as 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above the Pacific
Ocean. From this vantage point, you can not only see the
Pacific Ocean, but also waterfalls and the Kalalau Valley.
Originally built in the 1800s (with some parts rebuilt in the
1930s) the Kalalau Trail crosses five valleys and ends at Kalalau
Beach. Hikers will see a lush landscape while travelling through
the valleys, as well as well as tall cliffs aligning the ocean.
The Kalalau Trail is 11 miles long and takes about a day to
traverse. The first couple of miles from Ha’ena State Park to
Hanakapi’ai Beach are good day hike. However, completing
the entire trail is recommended for experienced hikers.
Given the amount of time that the hike takes (all day, for just
one way), you must have a camping permit (beyond Hanakapi’ai
• Alakai Swamp Trail
• Awaʻawapuhi Trail
• Kawaikoi Stream Trail
• Nuʻalolo Cliffs Trail
• Nuʻalolo Trail
• Pihea Trail
• Poomau Canyon Lookout Trail
Along the way, hikers can expect to see lush, native vegetation,
views of the ocean, and native birds. Kalalau Valley can
also be seen from the park – this was the backdrop for Jack
London’s short story Koʻolau the Leper.
Stop by the Koke’e Natural History Museum for current trail
information and maps.
In October, there’s a festival honoring Queen Emma of Hawaii.
Little Beach
Maui has a couple nudist beaches, which Little
Beach is the Mecca. The waves here are perfect
for bodysurfing, and sometimes surfing,
but depending on what day and the time of
day it is, you may be dodging naked people.
During a South or Southwest Swell, the surf
can be fun here (though fickle). It offers a left
hand reef break off of the South side of the
beach. This beach is beautiful and as perfect
as can be. On Sundays, you’ll find a different
atmosphere than usual with crowds unusually
large for Little Beach. For sunset, everyone celebrates
by swimming and cheering as a large
drum circle beats away. Once it gets dark, Little
Beach becomes a real spectacle. All types of
people, nude or clothed, begin to dance in the
circle with fire. The fire dancers at little beach
are incredible. You’ll sometimes find professional
fire twirlers with more than one ball of
fire and fancy flaming outfits. The imagination
is strong at Little Beach when it comes to new
and entertaining ways to play with fire. We’ve
seen everything from heated hula-hoops to
burning bras. You’ll enjoy this ceremony that
occurs every Sunday night. You don’t need to
get undressed either. Bring a flashlight to get
back over the cliff at night. Lately the police
have limited the event to stop around 8-9pm,
so get there before sunset to really experience
Maui’s Little Beach activities.
