Hunters Hill appoints heritage 

Defenders to Planning Panel

A former Mayor and Deputy Mayor with 

strong track records of heritage protection 

were appointed to unters ills first 

planning panel on Monday night. 

Former Mayor Richard Quinn and former 

Deputy Mayor Dr Meredith Sheil are among 

the four community representatives appointed 

by councillors to serve on the new, 

government imposed, panel which will be 

chaired by the Hon David Lloyd QC. 

Richard Quinn is the alternative delegate for North 

Ward and will partner Phillip Hart while Meredith 

Sheil will be partnered in South Ward by alternative 

delegate Virginia Wise. 

The four independent experts on the panel will be 

heritage experts Sheridan Burke and Chris Young 

alongside David Logan and Ron Edgar. 

The new planning panels will operate within weeks 

and are expected to consider controversial local 

development applications, although major development 

applications of more than $60 million will be 

considered by a state government appointed panel. 

A coming edition of The Weekly Times will outline 

the sweeping changes in how development applications 

will be assessed and Deputy Mayor Ross Williams 

told Monday night’s council meeting he would 

like Mr Lloyd to address an upcoming meeting on 

the panel’s proposed powers and procedures. 

The Deputy Mayor also stressed the council’s opposition 

to the government legislated planning panels, 

which strip councillors of their existing right to 

determine development applications.

“This is the most important issue this council will 

face in this term,” he said. 

“This is unreasonable legislation passed by the 

state government in the dead of night, a shambolic 

process of things being pulled out of the air. 

“It is outrageous and the government should be 

condemned.” 

Councillor Justine McLaughlin successfully 

moved an amendment to have all upcoming planning 

panel meetings advertised in The Weekly 

Times. 

As a result of the new planning panel, Hunters 

Hill Council is expected to consider whether the 

traditional bi-monthly council meetings should be 

replaced with one meeting a month. 

The government has defended the new legislation 

as a way to prevent council corruption but the 

opposition believes that local councils should decide 

if they want planning panels or not.

Free Flu Vaccines for Over 65s 

I am happy to report that this year the Turnbull Government will provide 

two new flu vaccines free of charge to Australians aged over 65. 

This is a direct response to last year’s horrific flu season, which had a 

devastating impact in Australia and around the world. It is aimed squarely 

at saving lives. 

More than 90 per cent of the 1,100 flu related deaths in 2017 were by 

people aged over 65 years of age. 

The new vaccines have been fast-tracked to ensure lives are saved and 

that older Australians receive greater protection during flu season. Local 

pharmaceutical companies and I have been strong advocates in ensuring 

the vaccines are made available to our most vulnerable. 

These new vaccines – Fluad® and Fluzone High Dose® – were registered 

in Australia to specifically provide increased protection for people aged 

65 years and older. 

From April 2018, both vaccines will be available through the National 

Immunisation Program. 

These vaccines have been specifically made for the elderly, as their 

immune systems respond less effectively to some vaccines. 

Under the National Immunisation Program, those eligible for a free flu 

shot include people aged 65 years and over, pregnant women, most 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those who suffer from 

chronic conditions.

to protestors claims 

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts has 

responded to comments made by Nelson 

Parade community protestors (See 

Pages 6 and 7). 

Mr Roberts said; “I understand their 

frustration and I share their frustration 

but this government will deliver on this. 

“The waste is not as hazardous as 

some residents are making out.” 

Mr Roberts urged protestors not to 

“talk up the hazards” of the Nelson Parade 

waste. 

“This is not just a problem for Hunters 

Hill, it is a problem for where the waste 

will end up and the government needs 

to find a place where it is going to go. 

“The problem becomes greater when 

people talk up the hazards and the toxicity, 

not ased on the scientific facts 

we have before us. 

“The reason I have not been able to 

communicate, generally, on this is the 

serious and complex commercial in 

confidence aspect. 

“But the fact the government has 

pledged $30 million shows it is serious 

about this.”

Carbon dioxide receives 

copious amounts of bad 

press these days, due 

mainly to mis-information 

dished out under the umbrella 

of environmental 

concern. 

AIf you were to ask people 

what they knew about 

carbon dioxide (CO2), they 

would probably say it’s a 

“pollutant”. 

But nothing could be further 

from the truth. 

If you want to see a place 

without CO2 then look no 

further than the Moon. No 

life is possible there because 

it does not have 

oxygen, water AND carbon 

dioxide. 

Life on this planet could 

not exist without carbon dioxide 

- it is the elixir of life 

- and is certainly NOT a pollutant. 

Does the Earth have 

a problem with what is 

deemed to be an excessive 

atmospheric carbon dioxide 

Consider these facts: 

Imagine one kilometre of 

atmosphere; 

The first metres are 

Nitrogen (N). 

The next metres are 

Oxygen (O). 

Thats metres of the 

kilometre or . ust 

metres to go. 

The next metres are 

water vapour (H2O). Just 

metres left to go. 

9 metres are argon (Ar). 

1 metre left out of 1 kilometre. 

A few gases make up the 

first it of that last metre. 

The last 38 centimetres of 

the kilometre – it’s carbon 

dioxide (CO2). 

A bit over one foot. That’s 

it, a measly .. 

There are just 12 millimetres 

left. About half an inch 

-just over a centimetre. 

This is the amount of 

carbon dioxide that global 

human activity puts into 

the atmosphere, a paltry 

0.0012. 

So another way of putting 

it, Australia’s contribution of 

0.18 of a millimetre is less 

than the thickness of a human 

hair - Out of a single 

kilometre. 

And of those 12 millimetres, 

Australia contributes 

0.18 (0.000018) of a millimetre

Australia Day another date

Butters, the baby brush turkey, 

appeared in our nature 

strip one morning. He was 

tiny, very uffy and absolutely 

adorable. 

We were astonished at his 

appearance wondering were 

he had come from and how he 

had managed to find himself 

in our little garden in suburbia. 

After looking up some information 

on brush turkeys we 

were amaed to find out that 

as little as one in 200 babies 

survived and they were totally 

independent from the moment 

they hatch. 

They are fully feathered, able 

to run and after a few hours, 

even y 

We decided to call him Butter 

Ball, Butters for short, and 

for the next few weeks we 

watched him grow. He started 

off in the nature strip, running 

and hiding at the slightest 

sound but as the weeks 

passed he started becoming 

more adventurous, venturing 

into our front garden and making 

himself right at home. 

When we left the house we 

would always be able to hear 

scratching and rustling as Butters 

foraged in our leaf litter 

and mulch. 

He would sleep in the jacaranda 

and acacia above the 

front lawn. Lately he had 

started wandering into the 

backyard and had discovered 

our veggie garden which was 

an absolute treasure trove of 

delicious veggies and fruit 

We loved watching him 

walk around on the lawn and 

in the garden. Whoever was 

home would always check up

on him to make sure he was 

O and we would wander out 

at night to see him sleeping on 

his little branch. 

Sadly, for the past two 

days no one had seen Butters 

around but we had seen 

a black and white cat in our 

backyard. 

This morning, across the 

road on the grass we found 

a pile of uffy feathers and 

some distinct adult brush 

turkey feathers. Butters had 

been moulting into his adult 

plumage. 

It has really devastated us as 

we thought of Butters as one 

of the family and delighted in 

watching him grow, hoping he 

would make it to adulthood 

and survive in the middle of 

Epping’s suburbia. 

I thought this would be a 

good chance to try and drive 

home the importance of responsible 

cat ownership and 

the devastating effects cats 

have on our native wildlife. 

People need to be more 

aware of the effects of roaming 

cats and understand that 

cats are by nature instinctive 

hunters even if their food requirements 

are met by their 

owners. 

Cats also appear in high 

numbers in urban areas, 

where native animal numbers 

are fewer. Even though each 

individual cat may only kill or 

injure a small number of native 

animals, it has a bigger effect 

on an already reduced population. 

As a responsible owner, people 

should ensure that their 

pet cats are kept inside overnight 

and particularly at dawn 

and dusk. Even well fed cats 

roaming at night hunt and kill 

possums and other small native 

mammals while birds are 

often targets at dawn and 

dusk when they are most active.

Re Decontaminate Hunters Hill campaign 

Dear Anthony, 

It is inaccurate to blame 

The Decontaminate Hunters 

Hill campaign for affecting 

property values as 

quoted in the TWT article 

Wednesday 21 February. 

Last year, NSW Property 

accepted their valuer’s discounts 

of 10 to 60 percent 

on Nelson Parade property 

land values, due to proximity 

to the unremediated contaminated 

site and stigma. 

This was months before the 

Decontaminate Hunters Hill 

campaign. 

The Financial Times 23 February 

article also confirms 

the affect of the contamination 

on local property values 

due to the inaction on the 

issue. 

We are asking for informed 

and accurate discussion 

with you. 

You are responsible for this 

issue and it is not helpful to 

either try to shift any blame 

on to the innocent victims 

of Nelson Parade, nor to 

threaten and bully us again 

to be silent and not speak 

publicly. 

The National Waste Repository 

you refer to as an option 

is completely untenable. 

It does not exist. 

It is only a proposal in initial 

stages and meeting huge 

opposition from local indigenous 

and community 

groups. Premier Jay Weatherill 

also discussed last 

month about a challenge 

to the High Court to halt 

the project. Furthermore,

The students enjoyed 

Christmas with their families

around Paris - visiting the 

Eiffel Tower, Le Louvre Museum, 

the Opera Garnier 

and sampling some of the 

delicious French food in restaurants. 

They spent a few weeks at 

a high school with their host 

student, experiencing the 

French education system 

first hand. 

After total immersion in the 

language for six weeks, their 

French improved enormously 

and they have gained lifelong, 

French friends and an 

adopted French family 

This is a reciprocal exchange 

and the Australian 

students will welcome their 

French friends to Sydney 

for six weeks in JulyAugust 

this year.

Counterfeit $50 notes being circulated in Eastwood 

RYDE Local Area Command police 

are investigating a counterfeit $50 note 

scam. 

The scam has seen 

a number of $50 notes 

passed in Eastwood 

and the police investigation 

aims to find out who 

is behind it, where the 

counterfeit notes come 

from and who is circulating 

them. 

Police Sergeant Jerrod 

Luck urged the community 

to be vigilant and to 

assist the investigation. 

“If they have a suspicion 

they have a counterfeit 

note they should 

contact us,” he said. 

“We will return $50 

notes that are not counterfeit.” 

It is an offence to knowingly 

possess counterfeit 

banknotes. 

The Reserve Bank of 

Australia recently created 

a website - https:// 

banknotes.rba.gov.au/ 

assets/pdf/counterfeitdetection-guide.pdf 

- to 

help detect a counterfeit 

note. 

The website advises 

people to handle a suspect 

banknote as little as 

possible and store it in 

an envelope to be handed 

to police. 

“Note any relevant information, 

such as how 

it came into your possession,” 

the website 

advises. 

“You are well within 

your rights to refuse to 

accept a banknote if you 

have concerns about it 

and under no circumstances 

should you take 

actions that may jeopardise 

your safety or that 

of others.” 

Genuine banknotes are 

printed on plastic and 

have a distinct feel. 

A suspect banknote 

may feel excessively 

thick or thin compared to 

a genuine banknote. 

“It is dicult to start a

of $20, $50 and $100 

banknotes.” 

Further checks can be 

made on the printing on 

a bank note. 

“Feel the dark printing 

which is produced with 

a special raised ink that 

can be felt with your finger.” 

“Check the print quality 

because the background 

printing should be sharp. 

“Check for irregularities 

such as less clearly 

defined patterns, thicker 

or thinner lines, or colour 

differences.” 

People can also check 

for microprinting. 

“Under a magnifying 

glass you will see tiny, 

clearly defined words on 

the top left corner of the 

$5 banknote and near 

the portraits on the other 

banknotes, it said”

DECONTAMINATE HUNTERS HILL CAMPAIGN 

Local MPs Promises Rubbished

KEYNOTE speakers at last Tuesday 

night’s packed “Decontaminate Hunters 

Hill” rally at the Town Hall rubbished 

promises from Lane Cove MP Anthony 

Roberts and Ryde MP Victor Dominello 

to get the radioactive waste in Nelson 

Parade cleaned up. 

Mr Roberts last week told The Weekly Times 

he would personally guarantee the clean up and 

his promise was backed on Tuesday night by Mr 

Dominello who said a reserve fund of around $30 

million had been set aside for it. 

Despite the Ryde MP’s promise, protestors at the 

rally demanded to know why he is holding the $30 

million in a “reserve” fund when his government’s 

sell off of community assets has given it a multibillion 

dollar surplus. 

Keynote speakers at the rally also challenged Mr 

Dominello to provide details of his claim the waste 

could be relocated to a site in South Australia. 

The speakers said previous governments had 

made – and broken – similar promises in the 100 

year old Nelson Parade saga and they had no reason 

to trust this government now. 

The Weekly Times Team was at the meeting, where 

three empty seats on the Town Hall stage had been 

reserved for the absent Mr Roberts, Mr Dominello 

and Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton. 

The speakers also scoffed at Mr Roberts’ letterbox 

drop to local residents hours before the rally 

and said the Lane Cove MP’s assurances sounded 

“suspiciously similar” to “shallow and meaningless” 

letters put out by politicians during the 1970s.

“This government has three key ministers totally 

treating us with absolute disregard. Where is Victor 

Dominelli? Where is Gabrielle Upton and where is

doesn’t even have the decency to face his own constituents. 

“We’ve heard nothing from him but the same hollow 

promises. We have been powerless in a safe 

seat and we will change that. We will fight for what 

is right!”

Eastwood police met with community leaders, 

shop owners and pedestrians outside on 

Eastwood Plaza last week. 

The meeting follows the 

recent PoliceBiz forum 

at Eastwood Community 

Centre where Crime Manager 

Detective Inspector 

Glyn Baker urged locals 

to report a crime as soon 

as it occurs. 

“Our aim is to have zero 

crime, no crime at all but 

when crime does occur 

we need to know and we 

need to know straight 

away because if we do 

not know, we cannot respond. 

“When a crime is reported

“We are very well placed 

to prevent crime but it 

must start with the police 

and the community working

Anthony Roberts makes plea 

to lower the State’s road toll 

LANE Cove MP Anthony Roberts has responded to the high road toll with a plea for motorists 

to know and respect the road rules. 

Police have blamed 

the high road toll on 

speed, alcohol use 

and negligence and 

Mr Roberts said respect 

for the road 

rules can reduce the 

toll significantly. 

His appeal coincides 

with this week’s 

launch of Road Rules 

Awareness Week. 

“We know that human 

error is a large 

factor in crashes so 

it’s important all drivers 

know and understand 

the rules, obey 

the signs and keep 

an eye out when on 

the road,” Mr Roberts 

said. 

“This the perfect 

time for all road users 

to refresh their 

knowledge of the 

NSW road rules. 

“We have around 

350 road rules in 

NSW and they are

Big 2017 Home Numbers 

Sydney’s housing construction boomed in 2017, with more homes built 

than ever before in a 12-month period. 

The figures, released by the Department of Planning and Environment, showed a record 

38,759 built in Sydney, exceeding the previous record in 2016 by more than 4,600 homes. 

Two weeks ago, Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed housing approvals 

across the state continued to soar with more than 70,000 home approvals granted in 

2017. 

This was the third consecutive calendar year that NSW recorded more than 70,000 

building approvals.

getting on with the job of delivering the homes and making it easier for first homebuyers

Grand Celebration on 

Plaza This Saturday 

Eastwood’s 10th Annual Lunar New Year festivities will 

culminate this Saturday with the Grand Celebration on 

Eastwood Plaza from 11am to 4pm. 

This is the major event of the two weeks festival which includes cultural 

performances, singing, choirs, dancing, speeches by VIP guests and entertainment 

on stage at the eastern end of Eastwood Plaza near the flagpole. 

This will include the traditional eye dotting ceremony and performances including

Lions Club Youth honours for students Deon and Ben 

MARIST College Eastwood captain Ben Rosada and Leader 

of Culture eon Testore pictured confidently and capaly represented 

the college in the recent competition organised y the 

Epping-Eastwood Lions Club. 

Along with a select group of competitors from Epping Boys High School, 

Cheltenham Girls High School and Normanhurst Boys High School, both 

students were required to submit an application detailing their achievements, 

skills and interests in the areas of Leadership, Sport, Community 

and Academic performance. 

At a dinner held last week at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, attended 

by 70 people and before three judges, all students had to present two 

2 minute impromptu speeches on the topics of: ‘How to prevent deaths 

and injuries from drowning and car accidents’ and ‘The positives and 

negatives of robots and drones’. 

Both Ben and Deon gave wonderful speeches before presenting their 5 

minute prepared speeches - Deon: You have the Power in You! and Ben: 

‘The Importance of the Team’. 

The boys’ prowess as speakers was evident and Deon won the Public 

Speaking section of the competition. 

Beyond that, Deon was also selected to be the Epping-Eastwood 

Club’s representative at the next level of competition which will be the 

Zone final on March 3. 

Both boys were impressive and a testament to their families who attended. 

The evening was a success largely due to the enthusiastic support of 

the Lions Club members who ensured that all participants felt at ease in 

order to fulfill their potential. 

Marist College Eastwood thanked Epping-Eastwood Lions Club for its 

efforts. 

“Our appreciation goes to the Lions Club for their support of youth and 

their organisation of events,” a College spokesperson said.

Child safety a risk in Gladesville 

CHILDREN’S safety is at risk from speeding drivers in High Street, 

Gladesville and residents have urged the City of Ryde Council to do 

something about it. 

Residents spoke at the 

last council meeting in 

December where they rejected 

a council proposal 

to erect no stopping signs 

on one side of the street. 

They spoke of the fear 

they have of children 

being hit by speeding 

motorists who use High 

Street as “a rat run” from 

Boronia Park to Ryde and 

have called for stop signs 

and speed humps as an 

alternative. 

“We feel no stopping 

signs will not slow down 

the trac and you (the 

council) are actually making 

High Street a runway,” 

resident Teresa Gallo 

said. 

“We suggest a roundabout 

or stop signs on High 

Street, but line markings 

will not change a thing.” 

Resident Salvatore Mattera 

rubbished the no 

stopping proposal. 

“The only thing that 

keeps down the speed is 

the parked cars and when 

the cars are not there we 

get high speeds,” he said.

Rebecca’s inspiration in the March Charge fund-raiser 

DRUMMOYNE resident Rebecca Hart knows all too well the devastating 

affects cancer can have on loved ones. 

Last April, 33-yearold 

Rebecca lost her 

mother, Corinne, to 

an aggressive form of 

bowel cancer.

half years, Corinne

major surgeries, 

chemotherapy and 

radiation therapy.

but she put on a

BALMAIN junior representative teams claimed bragging rights 

after toppling sister club Western Suburbs in both the U/16 Harold 

Matthews and U/18 S.G Ball Cup competitions at Campbelltown 

Stadium last weekend. 

The Tiger cubs showed 

character and skill to defeat 

the Magpies in the 

U/16s clash with strong 

games from promsing 

lock Thomas Kwok, back

Kwok produced a powerhouse 

display to earn 

the Player of the Match

have spearheaded the NSW Breakers to a 19th Women’s National 

Cricket League championship. 

The Australian representatives 

produced a 

batting masterclass to 

help the all conquering 

Breakers post a formidable 

tally of 302 in 

their Grand Final showdown 

with Western 

Australia last Saturday 

at Blacktown International 

Sportspark.

Skipper Ellis produced

Rising star Sam dives 

into a bright future 

RYDE schoolboy Sam Fricker is a rising star 

in the diving world and showed his wares with 

the Australian Diving Team at the 23rd FINA International 

Grand Prix in Rostock, Germany last 

weekend.

1998 Commonwealth 

Games gold medal winner 

and veteran of two Olympic 

and two Commonwealth 

Games, said Sam is the 

hardest working athlete she 

has ever coached and that 

is why he has gained Australian 

team selection so 

quickly. 

“The Rostock competition 

was an extremely high-level 

competition and great experience 

for Sam to learn 

from, and a chance to really 

be a part of the diving 

world,” commented Vyninka. 

It has been a rapid rise for 

the Trinity Grammar School 

Year 10 student and former 

TWT Clubs Six Ryde Sports 

Foundation Sports Star of 

the Year finalist. 

Sam’s background in 

gymnastics helped him 

win a regional title and a 

Schools National title in his 

first year of diving at the age 

of 11 while his drive to succeed 

has continued to propel 

him forward. “Sam had 

intensity and focus and was 

determined to achieve his 

goals even as an 11-yearold,” 

said his mother Toni 

Fricker. 

Competing in the one and 

three-metre springboard, 

10-metre platform, and 

synchronised diving, the 

Trinity Grammar Year 10 

student said he enjoys the 

challenge of the 10-metre 

platform most: “For me, the 

bigger the risk, the bigger 

the reward when you get it 

right,” he commented. 

Clearly committed to the 

sport, Sam trains for up to 

27 hours a week working 

five mornings a week on 

strength, fitness and dry 

board training, supported 

by six sessions a week in 

the pool practising one-metre, 

three-metre and 10-metre 

platform dives - he is 

in the pool every weekday 

afternoon and on Saturday 

mornings. 

When it became clear that 

Sam had a natural talent 

and passion for the sport 

he, along with his mother, 

brothers and sisters moved 

to Ryde from the Hunter region 

with Sam commencing 

Year 7 at Trinity Grammar in 

2015. 

“At 11 years old, I made 

my first NSW team to compete 

at National Schools 

Sport Australia. I had just 

started diving a bit for fun 

and was still doing gymnastics. 

I went into the NSW 

Institute of Sport (NSWIS) 

when I was almost 13 and 

that is when serious training 

started,” said Sam. 

Asked what he sees as 

the main challenges in his 

chosen sport Sam replied: 

“Diving is hard on your 

body and you have to be 

strong physically, but it also 

requires mental strength 

and a serious commitment 

if you want to do well. Trying 

to get every dive perfect 

is also a challenge.” 

Sam said he finds motivation 

by setting himself short 

and long-term goals and 

creating a plan for how to 

get there. While his major 

goal is earning a place on 

the 2020 Olympics team, in 

the shorter-term he has his 

sights set on the International 

Youth Diving Championships 

in Dresden and 

the 2018 Commonwealth 

Games in April, and the 

Junior Worlds, Youth Olympics, 

Open Nationals, and 

Elite Junior Nationals later 

in the year. 

Asked who he looks up to, 

Sam cites Australian diver 

and 2008 Olympic champion, 

Matt Mitcham and Chinese 

diver Qiu Bo (Olympic 

silver medallist and three 

times World Champion on 

10-metre platform) as his 

role models. 

Sam competed against 

Qui who is nine years his 

senior last week. Toni, elaborates: 

“Sam was training 

with NSWIS while Matt was 

still a part of the NSWIS 

Diving Team and that was 

really great for him. Sam 

also has a number of teachers 

at Trinity who have mentored 

and encouraged him, 

along with NSWIS Head 

Coach, Chava Sobrino and 

Assistant Head Coach, Joel 

Rodriguez.” 

Sam was the youngest 

amongst the field of over 

100 competitors from 22 

countries entered in the 

FINA International Grand 

Prix in Germany. 

The rise to the top hasn’t 

always been a smooth ride. 

Sam withdrew from the 

Australian Elite Junior 

Championships in 2016 due 

to a wrist injury. 

“Winning all of my events 

at Elite Nationals in 2017 

was the most memorable 

moment of my diving career 

- I really wanted to do that 

in 2017 since I was unable 

to achieve my goals at the 

event in 2016,” said Sam. 

The list of achievements 

doesn’t stop there. 

Sam made the Senior 

Australian Diving Team this 

year, competed in Dresden 

at the International Youth 

Diving Championships as 

part of the Junior Australian 

Diving Team, won Silver 

at the Open Nationals and 

was named Elite Junior 

Diver of the Year by Diving 

Australia at the Elite Junior 

Nationals in 2017 after 

winning all four events he 

entered. 

At a school level Sam is a 

proud member of the Trinity 

CAS Diving Team who have 

won the Barnett Shield for 

the past three years. Diving 

is Trinity’s most successful 

sport, winning the CAS 

Diving Shield (now known 

as the Steve Barnett Shield) 

32 times.
