Lawsuit: LF school
negligent in sexual assault
of male student
A lawsuit filed with the
Lake County Clerk’s Office
Wednesday, Feb. 21,
alleges negligence on the
part of Montessori School
of Lake Forest after a
former teacher sexually
abused a teenage male student
throughout a two-year
period.
Celina Montoya, 43,
who taught at the school
from 2010 to 2013, was
convicted in January 2016
and sentenced to four years
for the criminal sexual assault
of a 13-year-old male
in 2012.
The minor is the plaintiff
in the lawsuit against
the school and Montoya.
“A civil lawsuit, against
the school and against
Montoya, is completely
separate and distinct from
the criminal prosecution
that took place a couple of
years ago. There is no relationship
between the criminal
prosecution, which is
strictly intended to punish
Montoya for her wrong doing,
and a civil case, which
is intended to compensate
our client for the harms
that he suffered,” said Dan
Kotin one of the victim’s
lawyers with, Tomasik Kotin
Kasserman, of Chicago,
which filed the lawsuit
with Taylor & Ring, of Los
Angeles. Taylor & Ring
specializes in representing
victims of sexual and domestic
assault. The school
did not immediately return
phone calls, but released a
statement to parents and
the media from Executive
Director Ann Jordahl, also
the school’s leader at the
time of the crime.
The message reads, in
part, “It is our school policy
not to discuss specific
details concerning any
matter in litigation, nor do
we comment on confidential
student matters, as we
respect the legal process
and must safeguard the
privacy of our students,
alumni and their families.”
The statement, however,
admits that until now the
school had not notified its
“community” of the sexual
assault.
“We have not shared
this information with our
community earlier as the
former student’s family
was concerned about respecting
the privacy, confidentiality
and emotional
well-being of their child,”
Jordahl wrote. “We honored
the family’s request
for confidentiality.”
New fiber network service
equals cost increases at
library
Library users will probably
notice an uptick in internet
speed later this year,
as the Wilmette Library
Board approved a new
three-year fiber networking
services contract at its
Tuesday, Feb. 20 meeting.
The 36-month contract
with Comcast, which is
the library’s current service
provider, represents
a significant step up in
price. The library will pay
$1,580 per month for the
high-speed fiber service,
up from the current $400
per month price tag. Library
Director Heather
McCammond-Watts said
Comcast’s bid came in
“slightly lower” than that
of AT&T, the other bidder.
The estimated start date
for the new service agreement
is July 1, according
to the supporting documents
included with the
board packet for the meeting.
McCammond-Watts acknowledged
the cost increase
is a “big leap,” but
explained that the expenditure
is going toward an
infrastructural need for the
library.
“The way our library
is used now, it’s constant
traffic of internet and particularly
our Wi-Fi connections
are just exploding
with traffic,” she said.
“Our system is feeling
that. We have a significant
number of outages, frequent
outages.
“And that is a service
interruption that nobody
wants.”
Fiber networking offers,
among other things,
faster internet speeds and
reliability than other services,
like DSL or cable.
According to the Comcast
website, the telecommunications
company’s fiber
network spans 29 regional
networks in 39 states
and includes more than
145,000 miles of fiber.
“It’s much more reliable,
it’s speedy, and it’s
ours,” McCammond-Watts
said.
