visit activity zones which are<br />

Mystery and Skill and hosted<br />

by costumed medieval<br />

merry-men!<br />

In each zone there are a<br />

number of medieval themed<br />

team-building games and<br />

activities to complete before<br />

the finale, where teams enter<br />

an inflatable Crystal Dome.<br />

De Vere Beaumont Estate, in Old Windsor has unveiled the results<br />

of its £12m refurbishment, which includes the creation of new luxury<br />

bedrooms and a top-to-toe refurbishment of much of the property,<br />

including its unique Grade II listed 19th Century chapel.<br />

As well as crafting 15 new bedrooms out of what were seven<br />

meeting rooms in the property’s Wessex Old School House, work<br />

has included the meticulous restoration of the unique chapel which<br />

has been returned to its former glory, providing a striking and highly<br />

unusual backdrop to events, from weddings, to celebratory dinners<br />

and business meetings.<br />

The main reception area, 220 bedrooms and all communal areas<br />

have also received a thorough refurbishment to bring them in line<br />

with the recently re-launched De Vere brand. The property’s 45<br />

meeting spaces, including the flagship Hanover Suite and the<br />

Windsor Suite have been refreshed and offer the latest<br />

AV technology.<br />

A Day in the Life...<br />

HR Manager at Crowne Plaza Nottingham<br />

My day starts anywhere between<br />

8.30am and 2.30pm depending<br />

on what’s happening in my diary.<br />

I always make sure I attend the 10 at 10<br />

(our team get together to discuss the<br />

business of the day) but I like to come in<br />

later if I’m going to see the nights team.<br />

One of the things I love most about my<br />

job is that it’s not a 9-5 environment and<br />

the flexibility is there for me to work any<br />

day of the week!<br />

I plan my day around people and<br />

admin. Sometimes, HR can be all admin<br />

and while I get that, I believe it’s so<br />

important to focus on the people side<br />

of the role. I walk around the hotel and<br />

say good morning to team members<br />

and stop for a chat. I like to know what’s<br />

going on with them and it helps me<br />

in building relationships. I expect our<br />

team members to do the same with our<br />

guests so they come across in a positive<br />

way, happy and confident in their roles.


I’m working on a few projects at the<br />

moment, including pension briefings to<br />

all team members by the end of <strong>March</strong>, 1:1<br />

meetings (we call them coffee chats) with<br />

the departmental managers to discuss<br />

our upcoming engagement survey which<br />

begins on 12 <strong>March</strong>. We have an amazing<br />

score of 90.8% so we'll be talking about<br />

how we sustain or improve on this. I’m also<br />

auditing the personal information we keep<br />

in preparation for the new data protection<br />

regulations which come into force in May.<br />

One of my biggest projects is working with<br />

West Nottinghamshire College on the IHG<br />

Hotel Takeover Week which we’ve been<br />

planning since last October! The students<br />

have been hand-picked for the exercise<br />

and will be paired up with managers<br />

and team members in order to gain<br />

practical experience of operating a large,<br />

fully-functioning hotel to complement<br />

their classroom-based training. They will<br />

perform almost every role here at the hotel<br />

- we even have a new General Manager for<br />

the week!<br />

I’m going over to the College later for a<br />

photo shoot and to deliver an induction<br />

session to the 71 students taking part. It’s<br />

the first time we’ve ever been involved in a<br />

takeover and there is a lot of preparation<br />

but it’s so exciting too!<br />

In a typical week, I’ll spend my time<br />

working with a variety of issues and<br />

interesting people, I also spend time<br />

delivering training sessions at some of our<br />

other hotels.<br />

I love what I do and I get a lot of satisfaction<br />

out of seeing our team members grow<br />

in their roles and visibly enjoying what<br />

they do. I may not be in a typical revenue<br />

generating department but I believe my<br />

contribution to the hotel profit is through<br />

the engagement and performance of<br />

the team members directly delivering a<br />

fantastic experience to our guests.<br />

I am not the type of HR manager to ‘police’<br />

the hotel or stop people doing things, then<br />

again I’m not someone who just offers ‘tea<br />

and sympathy’. I do believe that some<br />

of our biggest challenges in HR are<br />

people-related and so I see my role as<br />

minimising any negative impact of that<br />

and maximising the real value that highly<br />

engaged team members can make to the<br />

bottom line.<br />

I am Captain of Robin Hood County (RHC),<br />

our hotel football club.<br />

Every hotel within Valor has a football<br />

club, we’re part of ‘VIFA’ (Valor Incentives<br />

For All) and although we don’t actually<br />

play football we use the team mentality<br />

and actions, to smash our targets!<br />

It’s all part of the unique way Valor promote<br />

and drive up revenue and engagement.<br />
