new team-building activities,

including Medieval Maze,

themed around the Crystal

Maze Medieval Zone.

Just like the TV show, teams

visit activity zones which are

categorised Physical, Mental,

Mystery and Skill and hosted

by costumed medieval

merry-men!

In each zone there are a

number of medieval themed

team-building games and

activities to complete before

the finale, where teams enter

an inflatable Crystal Dome.

Whichever team has the most

gold tickets after visiting the

dome is the proud winner of

the coveted crystal trophy!

De Vere Beaumont Estate, in Old Windsor has unveiled the results

of its £12m refurbishment, which includes the creation of new luxury

bedrooms and a top-to-toe refurbishment of much of the property,

including its unique Grade II listed 19th Century chapel.

As well as crafting 15 new bedrooms out of what were seven

meeting rooms in the property’s Wessex Old School House, work

has included the meticulous restoration of the unique chapel which

has been returned to its former glory, providing a striking and highly

unusual backdrop to events, from weddings, to celebratory dinners

and business meetings.

The main reception area, 220 bedrooms and all communal areas

have also received a thorough refurbishment to bring them in line

with the recently re-launched De Vere brand. The property’s 45

meeting spaces, including the flagship Hanover Suite and the

Windsor Suite have been refreshed and offer the latest

AV technology.

Smart Space comprises nine service features including inspirational

meeting rooms; a personal conference host; tech-savvy support and

access to a team of specialists to help ensure delegates get moving

and remain motivated throughout the day.

These blockbuster films have all had

scenes shot on location in Wales,

starting with the Oscar winning

movie of a man's obsession to hunt

the white whale Moby Dick (1956)

through to last year's box office flop

Transformers: The Last Knight.

With its rugged coastlines, national

parks and a landscape dotted with

history and heritage, including

towering castles and defensive

walls, raging rivers and impressive

waterfalls, the Welsh countryside,

cities and beaches are grabbing

the limelight with movie and TV

production companies from both

sides of the Atlantic. Bollywood

production companies have also

fallen for the Celtic charm with

Cardiff, Snowdonia and forestry in

mid Wales taking centre stage in big

musical numbers.

From the movie camera to the still,

2018 is going to be a great year to

capture the beauty of Wales. In

a celebration called Year of the

Sea, the outstanding coastline

will play host to special events

and experiences for everyone to

enjoy. The Wales Coast Path passes

breath-taking seascapes, hundreds

of beaches, harbours, inlets and

islands and there's every chance of

seeing seals, dolphins and porpoises

along the 870-mile route. Turn a

coastal corner and a cliff or cove will

and tales of pirates, smugglers and

A Day in the Life...

HR Manager at Crowne Plaza Nottingham

My day starts anywhere between

8.30am and 2.30pm depending

on what’s happening in my diary.

I always make sure I attend the 10 at 10

(our team get together to discuss the

business of the day) but I like to come in

later if I’m going to see the nights team.

One of the things I love most about my

job is that it’s not a 9-5 environment and

the flexibility is there for me to work any

day of the week!

I plan my day around people and

admin. Sometimes, HR can be all admin

and while I get that, I believe it’s so

important to focus on the people side

of the role. I walk around the hotel and

say good morning to team members

and stop for a chat. I like to know what’s

going on with them and it helps me

in building relationships. I expect our

team members to do the same with our

guests so they come across in a positive

way, happy and confident in their roles.


I’m working on a few projects at the

moment, including pension briefings to

all team members by the end of March, 1:1

meetings (we call them coffee chats) with

the departmental managers to discuss

our upcoming engagement survey which

begins on 12 March. We have an amazing

score of 90.8% so we'll be talking about

how we sustain or improve on this. I’m also

auditing the personal information we keep

in preparation for the new data protection

regulations which come into force in May.

One of my biggest projects is working with

West Nottinghamshire College on the IHG

Hotel Takeover Week which we’ve been

planning since last October! The students

have been hand-picked for the exercise

and will be paired up with managers

and team members in order to gain

practical experience of operating a large,

fully-functioning hotel to complement

their classroom-based training. They will

perform almost every role here at the hotel

- we even have a new General Manager for

the week!

I’m going over to the College later for a

photo shoot and to deliver an induction

session to the 71 students taking part. It’s

the first time we’ve ever been involved in a

takeover and there is a lot of preparation

but it’s so exciting too!

In a typical week, I’ll spend my time

working with a variety of issues and

interesting people, I also spend time

delivering training sessions at some of our

other hotels.

I love what I do and I get a lot of satisfaction

out of seeing our team members grow

in their roles and visibly enjoying what

they do. I may not be in a typical revenue

generating department but I believe my

contribution to the hotel profit is through

the engagement and performance of

the team members directly delivering a

fantastic experience to our guests.

I am not the type of HR manager to ‘police’

the hotel or stop people doing things, then

again I’m not someone who just offers ‘tea

and sympathy’. I do believe that some

of our biggest challenges in HR are

people-related and so I see my role as

minimising any negative impact of that

and maximising the real value that highly

engaged team members can make to the

bottom line.

I am Captain of Robin Hood County (RHC),

our hotel football club.

Every hotel within Valor has a football

club, we’re part of ‘VIFA’ (Valor Incentives

For All) and although we don’t actually

play football we use the team mentality

and actions, to smash our targets!

It’s all part of the unique way Valor promote

and drive up revenue and engagement.
