Health & Beauty
Taking a moment
Wellbeing and beauty editor Eminé Rushton, who will be writing
for us each month, tells us about her own beauty routine
Do you have a beauty
regime? I do a little skin
ritual when I wake up
and before I go to bed.
My routine is all-natural;
I stopped using synthetic
products around 10 years
ago, and my skin responded
immediately. What I use,
how I apply it, and what I do
in between, vary a great deal
from day to day, depending
on my skin’s needs in that
Miso, please!
Fermented foods contain
probiotics, the good bacteria
which help boost immunity, aid
digestion and repopulate the
gut biome. This repopulation is
important at this time of year,
particularly if you’ve suffered
from winter bugs and been
prescribed antibiotics, which
wipe out everything.
Miso paste, made from
fermented beans and grains, is
a staple in Japan and China.
In addition to containing
millions of beneficial bacteria,
unpasteurized miso is packed
full of essential minerals and
moment, and what it’s
‘telling’ me.
Whatever I’m using I take
time to massage and stroke
the skin, and breathe in
the aromas of the natural
products. Sometimes, this
moment is the only thing
drawing a line between the
busy working day, and the
more restful evening, so I like
to honour it. Oh, and I love
my little jade face roller – it’s
so cool and deeply soothing
– rolling it around my skin
in the morning to help with
absorption of my products
always feels wonderfully
invigorating.
Do you have a particular
product you couldn’t live
without? I get sent so many
products to test, so when I
am faithful to something, it’s
rather telling. I love the May
Lindstrom Pendulum Potion
(a cleanser) and the serums
by Botane Actives, Romilly
Wilde, and TWELVE beauty.
I am also very loyal to my
is a good source of various
B vitamins, vitamins E, K
and folic acid. Sourcing
unpasteurised miso – as
opposed to the packets
of instant powdered miso
widely available is important,
as extreme heat kills the
probiotics.
Miso soup for 4: make
800ml of low sodium vegetable
bouillon and bring to the boil
in a pan, add a bunch of finely
chopped spring onions and
simmer for 3 minutes. Place
2 tablespoons of miso paste in
a small bowl, mix with water
hydrating masks and think
Josh Rosebrook’s is the best.
I love a good face oil – my
favourites are from Votary,
Herbivore Botanicals, A.S
Apothecary or MV Organic
Skincare. But if I were
allowed only one product
forever it would have to be
coconut oil – I can cleanse,
moisturise and protect my
skin with it (and have done
on many a remote island
escape. Bliss!).
to form a thin paste and pour
the mixture into the pan,
heating through gently without
allowing to come to the boil.
Season with soy sauce -
being aware that it is quite salty
- and serve in bowls or cups.
You can also add cubes of tofu
and some spinach leaves to
make it more of a meal.
