Maquoketa FFA adviser Matt Lansing is leading the development of expanded<br />
curriculum as chapter alumni raise funds for a new building. It is a new chapter<br />
for Maquoketa’s FFA organization, which is the second oldest in <strong>Iowa</strong>.<br />
development, and proper sanitation. A science classroom<br />
will accommodate dissections, as well as demonstrations<br />
of livestock, plants, and other small animals, with<br />
a veterinary science focus. This lab will be one that can<br />
be washed down and cleaned after “dirty” lessons are<br />
taught.<br />
“Really, the sky is the limit as we are excited about the<br />
possibilities even working cross-curricular to engage as<br />
many students as possible,” Lansing said of the building,<br />
which is still in the planning stages.<br />
Greg Bopes is a Maquoketa FFA alumnus who is on the<br />
board for the new Agricultural Learning Center project.<br />
He and other board members are raising funds and<br />
spearheading the project that reflects educational advances<br />
in the ag field.<br />
“Agricultural education has really changed over the<br />
last few years,” Bopes said. “This building will provide<br />
the facilities and equipment for students to learn about<br />
all of the different opportunities that agriculture can provide.<br />
We have had a great response so far for the project<br />
and appreciate everyone who has contributed up to this<br />
point. It is great to see the community get behind this<br />
project.”<br />
Serving the local community is a cornerstone of many<br />
local high school FFA chapters. At Central DeWitt, where<br />
the FFA chapter celebrates its 80th anniversary, students<br />
started hatching their own chickens and ducks in an incubator,<br />
said adviser Amy Grantz.<br />
