his cell phone interrupts conversation regularly. He takes<br />
a call regarding an upcoming sale that’s two weeks away.<br />
“Hi, Dave. How ya doin’? Yep. Yep.” He scribbles notes<br />
on a lined sheet of notebook paper, ends the call, and passes<br />
the sheet onto Scarlet. When she’s finished with it, she<br />
hands it back to him.<br />
“See how simple that is?” he said to a visitor. “We don’t<br />
need a computer for that.”<br />
In the auction barn, men ranging from grade-school age<br />
to senior citizens and a few women sit shoulder to shoulder<br />
on a frigid Saturday. It’s cold outside and on the floor,<br />
but in the upper balcony, it’s downright balmy thanks to<br />
two fans that circulate the rising heat. People are wearing<br />
ball caps and stocking hats, many showing allegiance to<br />
either the University of <strong>Iowa</strong> or <strong>Iowa</strong> State, who happen to<br />
be playing each other in football that afternoon. Between<br />
lots, the conversation in the stands turns to who’s winning<br />
the game.<br />
Larkey sits at the corner of the counter on this day as<br />
another auctioneer does the calling, but he’s still the king<br />
of the ring. He offers commentary as different lots are<br />
brought in for bidding.<br />
“How do you like them?” Or, “We’ve got some red<br />
