“Council is pleased with the appointment
and wish Mr Landu every success at Kouga,”
“Increasing how much business we do locally
is important,” she said.
“The good news is that many businesses
that stopped doing business with the municipality
years ago because they were not
being paid, have started re-registering on
the database, a clear sign that confidence is
being restored.” (Source JBay News)

Bekende Jeffreysbaaiers leef hul droom uit!
Dit was so skuins na Chad van
Biljon, lewensmaat van Danie
Koekemoer, ‘n breinanurisme wonderbaarlik
Luvit Empire was egter ‘n ongelooflike
sameloop van omstandighede, gebed,
bevestigings, hulp en bystand van
mense wat na-ure ingespring en kom
help het. Chad het die leë winkel waar
Luvit Empire onlangs oopgemaak het,
(oorkant Marico Mini Market in die
Vrieskas-straat) opgemerk en instinktief
geweet DIS DIT! Sy en Danie se stokperdjie
om die mooiste kunsmeubels en
bybehore tuis te maak, het ‘n plekkie
gekry waar hul dit aan die plaaslike
gemeenskap bekend kon stel!
werk kom help raadgee, saamdroom,
saamdoen en idee’s uitgeruil”, gesels
Chad en Danie.
“Die naam LUVIT EMPIRE is ‘n lekker
storie”, gesels die twee. “Ja,” sê Chad,
“my sussie Angelique en ek het jare
gelede al saamgedroom oor ‘n eie besigheid
met die naam Luvit”.
Danie voeg by: “En toe ek en Chad ontmoet
het, het hy altyd gesê: “With you I
would love to build an empire!”
Hul eerste reeks spesialiseer in bedstyle,
‘n volgende artikel - hou Joining Hands
dop!)
Luvit Empire spesialiseer in unieke
kunsmeubels van hoofsaaklik hout en
staal met hier en daar pragtige
chroomafwerkings.
ooit vervaardig - jy sal dus nooit ‘n
Cinema Synergy Jeffreys
Bay – Celebrating Their
4th Birthday
and corporate markets in the Jeffreys Bay area since 2010 - the last four years
at their current location in the Equinox Mall. With more than 30 years of
industry experience, business owner Harry Vernout has an extensive knowledge of
the technological developments and trends in the market place.
Their services include:
Surround Sound Systems
When it comes to surround sound or Home Theatre systems it is not simply a matter of ‘one
size fits all’. Variables such as, room size, layout and acoustics affect system performance
and then there is the all-important matter of the available budget. Systems are designed
with the above parameters in mind to ensure an optimal-sounding, cost effective end-result.
Contact them for a free requirement assessment and product demonstration.
DSTV Installations
Satellite television is a crucial part of everyday life and the DSTV decoder forms the heart
of most audio/visual systems. Now that Multichoice has expanded their offering to include
streaming services it has become all the more important to have a proper understanding of
how Digital Satellite TV works, and how to resolve the most frequently occurring problems
and errors promptly and efficiently.
Wi-Fi Speakers
A very popular product line that has taken the market by storm is the self-powered compact
Wi-Fi loudspeaker that can be positioned wherever music is required and controlled by
Smart phone or tablet. Easy and fun to use, hugely powerful, extremely flexible and cost
effective.
Custom Installations – Residential and Corporate
Once the equipment is delivered it needs to be installed – properly! Cinema Synergy
doesn’t believe in taking shortcuts and custom installations have become their trademark.
It often requires thinking out of the box, opting for a ‘less obvious solution’ and above all
going the extra mile.
Types of installations include: new audio/visual residential installations,
re-installations and general neatening of cabling of existing residential systems, DSTV
Installations as well as corporate AV installations for churches, restaurants and offices.
For enquiries, quotations and product demonstrations contact Harry or
Charné or visit them at Shop 52 in the Equinox shopping Mall.
voel! Chad en Danie sluit af: “Ons is so
ongelooflik dankbaar vir ons familie en
vriende se ondersteuning van dag een
af!”

Is God With Me When I’m Hurting?
Why doesn’t God stop people from hurting others?
But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
so that you may be sons of your Father who is in Heaven. For He makes His
sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the
unjust. - Matthew 5:44-45 -
Some sources of evil from people
Someone tells a lie about you resulting in you losing your job.
A person you love hurts you either emotionally or physically.
Someone you trusted steals from you, and you are the one who must pay for what was
taken.
We continue our study in the Bible of why God allows so much evil in the world with a look
at the evil that is done to us by the actions against us by people. According to the Bible, evil
is found within “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life: (1 John 2:16).
However, there are many other situations where evil can also be found, for example, a government
which treats us unjustly, terrorism, and people we know who injure us personally.
In each of these situations the Bible gives us guidance for how we are to react.
Government
God says in Romans 13:1-7 that He is the one who gives authority to any government to
rule their people, and He demands justice for the people from those governments. We must
obey the government in everything that is not specifically against God’s command – 1 Peter
2:13-20. We pray for our governmental leaders. We honor them in everything that is not
specifically against God’s commands – see Peter and John’s answer to their governmental
leaders in Acts 5:29. Jesus had said, “tell everyone about Me” and the government said,
“be quiet!” Peter and John replied, “we must speak as God commands” and went to prison
without argument for disobeying the government.
Terrorism
God allows people to make choices, but He holds each person responsible for the choice
they make. Sin leads to hatred and anger. Both lead to death, just as God said it would be
(Romans 6:23). We cannot control terrorist events. We cannot even prepare for them. If
someone strikes a school or a church or a business and we happen to be nearby, we may
suffer. Our only response can be Jesus’ command to not be afraid – see John 16:33. We
need not fear anything when we know God is the one who keeps us forever – See Romans
8:38-39.
Personal injury
A family member, friend, neighbor, or co-worker hurts you physically or emotionally. Jesus
commands us in Matthew 18:15-20 to seek reconciliation with this person, and forgive them
(verses 21-22). Remember, forgiving the one who hurt you is never about feelings, only
about our choice to release to God what was done to and never hold it against that person
again. Forgiving does not mean we must remain in a place where personal harm can continue.
It only means we give all justice in this matter to God alone.
Lievte Netie
Know God hears and cares
God hears our cry and cares about our pain. Our pain is not continuing because He has
forgotten us; it continues because He has a plan for what is happening. His plan is that
everyone repents and trusts Him for salvation – 2 Peter 3:9. Jesus suffered much injustice
here on earth because His suffering demonstrated the evil of sin. People who thought they
were doing right according to their ways hurt Him, showing how things WE think are right
for may be evil.
God’s power revealed in us
Our suffering has a wonderful and powerful purpose in God’s kingdom, just as Jesus’
suffering did. His suffering made a way for us to come to Him. Our suffering lights the way
He made for people around us. How? When we rejoice in our suffering (Matthew 5:10-12)
others around us see how different we are, and are amazed that someone could truly experience
joy in time of suffering.
There is great power in forgiveness! Remember how you felt when God forgave you your
sin and made you His child? We can offer a taste of that to those who harm us too – forgiveness
that is not earned or deserved, but given because we are like our Savior! The
power of undeserved love is just as great. Love attracts others to us, like moths are attracted
to light. Then through our love, they get to know Jesus’ love for them.
God’s blessed hope
God has given us many promises that bring us hope even in our suffering. One of the great
promises is from Romans 8:18 - “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are
not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
God has promised His children that He will not leave us to suffer judgement when He
comes to judge this world: Romans 5:9 says, “Since, therefore, we have now been justified
by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God.” Other verses,
such as 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10; 5:9; and Revelation 3:10 give us this same promise – He
will call us to His side (John 14:1-3) before the time of His judgment comes to earth (see
Revelation 6).
Suffering is never pleasant, but we can rejoice it in because we believe His promises that
He will not only use our suffering for His kingdom, He will make our suffering into good for
us. Great hope is ours, in Him, that our suffering is never without eternal purpose!
Pray this week:
Lord Jesus, I choose to forgive ____ who has hurt me. I know I cannot forgive in my
own strength, so I ask for Your help to do this. Make me more like You today.
Dag Zero mag afgeweer word in Kaapstad
Deur Benine Cronje / Pro Agri
DA leier, Mmusi Maimane, het vroeër
vandag tydens ‘n personderhoud
aangekondig dat die verwagte Dag
Zero-scenario vir Kaapstad moontlik
heeltemal vanjaar vermy mag word.
Hierdie scenario is gebruik vir beplanningsdoeleindes
as ‘n aanduiding van wanneer
Dag Zero is nou onbepaald uitgestel. Die
Stad het omvattende
gebeurlikheidsplanne rondom die
mobilisering van hulpbronne voorberei om
25-liter drinkbare water per persoon per
dag te voorsien. Reëlings is getref vir die
water om by sekere aangewese punte oral
in die Stad afgehaal te word.
Die Stad se gebruik van hierdie scenario
is voorheen bevraagteken deur verskeie
watersektor-rolspelers, insluitend die
landbousektor. Boere moes sedert 12
Januarie 2018 in baie gevalle sonder hulle
regmatige watertoedeling klaarkom as
gevolg van nasionaal-ingestelde en streng
toegepaste waterbeperkings. Dit het
aanleiding gegee tot geweldige verliese
en ontbering vir die landbougemeenskap,
insluitend werksverliese vir seisoenale
plaaswerkers.
onvoorsiene waterbestuurskrisis geskep
het. Paniekbevange inwoners (wat dit kon
bekostig) het begin om rou- sowel as
behandelde water op te berg in afwagting
van Dag Zero. Hierdie ontwrigting van
normale verbruikspatrone het geweldige
probleme vir die Stad se waterbeplanners
asook die Departement van Water en
Sanitasie geskep.
Hoewel die Stad erken dat sy beraming
van watervoorsiening hersien is as gevolg
van ‘n vermindering in die landbou se
waterverbruik, het dit versuim om erkenning
te gee aan die landbousektor se
volgehoue pogings in dié verband of die
rampspoedige effek van die droogte op die
landbousektor.
betaal.
“Terwyl ons dankbaar is dat Dag Zero nou
blykbaar afgeweer is, moet mense besef
dat die huidige droogte geensins verby is
nie. Dit bly steeds ‘n nasionale ramp wat
veral in die landbousektor van die Wes-
Kaap by die dag erger word.
Terwyl Dag Zero blykbaar afgeweer is,
Stad voort. Die Nasionale Waterbeperkings
van 12 Januarie 2018, sowel as die Stad
se Vlak 6b Waterbeperkings, is steeds in

Taking care of your Car without
wasting water
If you want to avoid using water or live in an area with water restrictions, a waterless
car wash might be a good alternative to soap and water. Waterless car wash products
use a chemical formula instead of water to lift debris from a car’s surface. There
are a number of waterless products with different additives such as wax, so you’ll
want to find the right product for your car. After you find a good product and a clean
towel, the washing process is just as easy as a traditional car wash.
Source: https://www.wikihow.com/Wash-Your-Car-Without-Water
Finding the Right Product
Determine if a waterless product is right. If
your car is caked in mud, a waterless car
wash will not help and might even scratch
the paint of your car. Only use a waterless
product if you have minimal dirt or dust.
Otherwise, rinse your car with water to
remove dry dirt, then use the waterless
product.
Use a waterless car wash with wax for an
added sheen. Many waterless products
have wax in them, which will give your car
an extra layer of protection while you wash
it. If you normally wax your car after you
wash it, this could be a time-saver.
Choose a UV-blocking formula for even
more protection. UV rays can damage your
paint by causing fading and oxidation. While
wax will help protect your car’s paint from
UV rays, some formulas have an extra
degree of protection
Try an organic, multi-use product.
There are also very successful organic,
natural waterless products that you can use
in your home or inside the car as well as on
windows. These may be less damaging to
your paint; you can find them at car shops
or many home improvement stores.
Buy the waterless car wash. These products
can be found at most auto stores,
Walmart, or online. If you’re having trouble
finding a waterless car wash in stores,
some examples of products are Dri Wash’n
Guard, Meguiar’s Ultimate Wash & Wax
Anywhere, and Triplewax Waterless Wash
& Shine.
Buy micro-fiber cloths. Micro-fibers are
tiny fibers that collect dirt. Use a minimum
weight of 300gsm (grams per square meter).
Make sure it is clean. Lower quality or
dirty towels can scratch your car or leave
undesirable swirl patterns.
You can also find a chamois cloth instead
of a micro-fiber. Any product that absorbs
liquid without scratching is ideal. Dilute car
wash fluid, if necessary.
Some formulas require diluting with water,
while others are ready-to-use. Read the
instructions on the bottle to see which one
you have.
Fill a spray bottle with car wash fluid, if
necessary. If you bought a large bottle of
waterless car wash, you will need to transfer
some into a spray bottle. Otherwise, most
products already come in a spray bottle.
Divide car into multiple parts. Divide the car
into distinct sections to make it more
manageable and to make sure you don’t
miss any spots. Here’s one way to divide
the car, but you can do it any way you’d like:
•The side glass
•The roof
•The hood and trunk
•The upper half of the side doors
•The lower half of the side doors
•The front bumper
•The rear bumper
•The wheels
Start at the top and spray one section at a
time. Use as much waterless car wash fluid
as you need to cover the section. If there is
some dirt on the paint, you can put a little
bit of water to help loosen it up so that you
don’t overuse the fluid.
For the tires, you may need to use
additional fluid. Be sure to save the tires for
last, as they will be the dirtiest.
Fold your micro-fiber cloth. You want to
maximize the number of clean surfaces on
the cloth. Every time you start wiping, you’ll
want to use a new, clean side, so as not to
reintroduce dirt. Otherwise you will be
working against yourself and will actually
rub dirt into your paint.
Wipe in one direction to pick up the dirt.
Don’t wipe back and forth or in a circle. This
will push the dirt around, leaving a streak or
swirl pattern on the paint.
•Remember not to scrub, as you would with
soap and water. The fluid should dislodge
any dirt on the car on its own. All you have
to do is pick up the fluid and dirt with a
cloth.
Dilute car wash fluid, if necessary. Some
formulas require diluting with water, while
others are ready-to-use. Read the
instructions on the bottle to see which one
you have.
Fill a spray bottle with car wash fluid, if
necessary. If you bought a large bottle of
waterless car wash, you will need to transfer
some into a spray bottle. Otherwise, most
products already come in a spray bottle.
The difference between a Dad & Father
Blog article: The Difference Between a
Dad and a Father.
David B. Bohl
Source: http://www.slowdownfast.com
Are you a dad or a father? A dad is
someone who not only physically helped to
create the life of a child, but also supports
that child with the basic necessities (food,
clothing and shelter) and provides guidance
and advice to see his child through life.
A dad demonstrates that he loves his
children by interacting with them daily,
letting them know that they’re a priority and
that they give purpose to his life. Yes, it’s far
easier to be a father than a dad. The level of
personal commitment that our kids require
is challenging, sometimes even
overwhelming.
Career Builders’ annual Father’s Day
survey* found that 37% of working dads
would leave their jobs if their spouse or
partner made enough money to support
the family. If given the choice, another 38%
would take a pay-cut to spend more time
with their kids.
FathersAtWork.com reports that 70% of
working fathers have a difficult time
balancing their professional and personal
responsibilities.
When we became parents, we made a life
decision that carries more responsibility
than any other. Yet, it’s easy far too easy
to get caught up in work and the rest of
our lives, relegating our children to a lower
priority. We don’t want to admit this because
in our hearts, our family comes first. But
actions speak louder than words.
What can you do today to be a better
dad?
1. Check in with your family during the day.
If the kids are at school, arrange for them to
call you when they get home. Spending just
a few unhurried minutes on the phone after
school demonstrates that you care about
what’s happening in their lives.
2. Spend time each day, just hanging out
and giving your children your undivided
attention. Listen to their ideas. Get to know
who’s important to them and why. But you
can’t do this while distracted. Step away
from your email and cell phone and use this
time to build your relationship with your kids.
3. Make time at least once a week to have
some fun together. Each stage of your
child’s life presents a new opportunity.
•Repeat these steps for each section of the
car. Continue this process until the whole
car is clean, working top to bottom, clean to
dirty.
•Perform a second buff on each section, if
necessary. If you have a wax-based product
it may require a second or third “buff” step.
Read the directions on the bottle to see if
this is necessary.
Take turns picking the week’s activity. When
your kids are young, the whole family might
enjoy weekly trips to the park. As they grow,
their idea of what’s fun will get a little more
sophisticated. The important thing is to
enjoy the process with them.
4. Talk and teach your positive values.
Never assume that your kids will pick up
your values strictly through osmosis.
Wherever appropriate, tell them why you
feel the way you do. And yes, model those
values that you want your children to adopt.
5. Balance boundary enforcement and
support. When you come home from work
and find mandatory chores undone, how do
you react? Is there a natural consequence
that fits the “crime?” More importantly,
should your first interaction of the day be
one of boundary enforcement? How was his
or her day at school? What joys or
difficulties is your child facing? Be interested
in your child before cracking the whip on
chores!
6. Special tip for married dads: Nurture your
marital relationship. For one thing, your
children will grow up and move out of the
house someday. But right now, you’re
setting an example for you children. Boys
learn how to treat a girl by watching how
dad interacts with mom. Girls set their
expectations of how they will be treated in
the same way. Show them what real love
looks like so that they’ll recognize it for
themselves when they’re older.
Finally, cut yourself some slack. Nobody’s
perfect. Having read this far
means that you care about being a great
dad. Simply commit to doing your best,
then relax. When you fall down, just
make sure you get back up again … and
keep trying. Sometimes “good enough”
is plenty.

The best of Mexico on your doorstep!
Step into Old World Mexico and experience the most authentic Mexican
fusion, insuring we can Introduce those that are fearful of spice, guided by
the nostalgia of Mexico, where the aromas of delicious
chimichangas, enchiladas & juicy food floods our kitchen early in the
morning, selecting the freshest vegetables, herbs and spices to make the
best homemade meals for their guests, served with handmade tortillas.
Serving authentic Mexican dishes in a warm atmosphere, The Mexican in Jeffrey’s Bay is a
vibrant and happening place to eat and chill out.
We met with the just as vibrant owner Michelle Dean of one of the most unique (and only
Mexican) restaurants in our town to talk about her work and dreams.
“We have one philosophy: “We don’t have customers…we have guests.” Guests to a party
of flavour and joy that never ends, thanks to the dedicated service of our staff. The Mexican
offers a 100% family, fun environment.” “The Mexican only uses the freshest ingredients to
bring the best Mexican cuisine experience to our town”, says Michelle, “and I spend a lot of
time with my head in recipe books and I do watch a lot of the cooking shows, but generally
the menu is made up with food I love to eat.”
H i th e r e !
As promised last week, we are talking about providing ongoing care for your
diamond jewellery today!
Take all of your diamond jewellery to a professional jeweller once a year. Diamond jewellery
needs to be checked by a professional jeweller at least once a year. He or she will look
through the prongs and mountings.
These are the items that hold your stone in place. When checked regularly, you can feel
more confident that the diamond is firmly in its settings still and is not going to spring out
unnoticed and disappear.
Store with care. If you are not wearing your diamond jewellery for any length of time, store
it in a jewellery box, keeping it apart from other jewellery. It is vital that every piece of jewellery
has its own place, to prevent your diamond or its settings from being scratched, and to
prevent it from damaging other jewellery pieces.
Store in a secure container with a fabric lining and cotton pads. This will help to minimize
movement or hitting the sides of the storage container. Another way to store your diamond
jewellery is in boxes with compartments or in separate zipper pouches.
When and why did it all happen to you? Why specifically a Mexican Restaurant?
“I opened the Mexican 14 years ago, since Mexican food was what I loved cooking and it
was something different for our town. Our menu has a little bit of everything so I think you
will always find something for everyone’s pallet. I worked in restaurants from the time I was
in Nico Malan, and then when I left school I moved to Durban for 2 years and I continued to
work in restaurants gaining a lot of valuable experience.”
“When I came back to Jeffrey’s bay, I went straight into restaurant life at night again, but
worked for Billabong for 6 years during the day.
I had my children when I was 25 and when they were 3yrs and 6yrs, I decided I needed
to get back into the working community, and I wanted to work for myself. I heard about a
space above, the then country feeling shop that was coming available to rent.
I went to the owner and said that I would like to go and see the space and when I walked
into the space, I just totally felt at home instantly, and really, the rest is history.”
What effect do the economy have on your business and how do you overcome the
challenges it brings?
“The biggest challenge we face in our type of business, is the economy, eating out is a
luxury. In the struggling economy we have devised weekly specials to make it affordable for
people to come and treat themselves. I think we have continued support, because we try
very hard to make sure that the portions and quality are always on point.”
“When it comes to unhappy customers, I am always super accommodating. We don’t all
have the same taste buds and I’ve learnt a lot over the years listening to what they have to
say, and when comments are constructive, it can be very helpful.
“I read Richard Branson’s book years ago, but I think I have to thank all my bosses along
the way for influencing me in a very positive way.”
Do you ever eat in your own restaurant?
“I eat in my restaurant every day that I’m at work and sometimes we will even get take
aways. I love the food and it’s always good to keep on top of the staff and make sure they
are preparing good and consistent meals “
Michelle is definitely in her happy place at The Mexican: “I’ve absolutely always loved
cooking and entertaining people, its hard work but I really and truly enjoy my job. . . I love
the intensity of my job when its full house and I am in my kitchen and we grinding out those
orders, I am in my happy place. I always find it hard to put into words.”
How do you give back to the community?
“I’ve been involved with my sister with the Animal rescue sanctuary for quite some time, I
do hand raising for her when she is snowed under for too many pups. And we do support
various other charities in our community. “
If you have not already popped down to visit The Mexican, come see them soon! It is really
an experience not to be missed!
Tips
•There are ultrasonic cleansers available.
These use a high frequency to clean
diamond jewellery. Either ask your jeweller
to use this device on their premises, or you
could consider looking into purchasing your
own. If you do buy one, read the
instructions carefully and follow them
exactly.
•Inspect your diamond jewellery regularly,
to avoid damage.
•Always read the cleaning instructions
accompanying your diamond jewellery. It
may recommend specific cleaning liquids,
which will ensure the best and safest clean
for your particular item. Also, read the
precautions, if any.
Warnings
•If you like the colour of your diamond then
make sure that there will not be any
contacts with household cleansers like, for
example, bleach. These cleaners cannot
only change the colour of your diamond but
the colour of the settings and mountings
that hold it as well.
•Your natural skin oil can negatively affect
diamonds. The oils cause grime build-up,
reducing the lustre of diamonds. Hence, the
need for cleaning now and then.
•If you notice a crack in your piece or a
loose diamond, avoid cleaning the jewellery
by yourself. Instead, set it aside for repair
and contact a professional as soon as
possible.
•Due to everyday movement, diamonds on
jewellery get smudged and soiled. Even if
you do not wear diamond jewellery, it still
gains dust.
Take care and keep on shining!
Baby Ezra was born to parents that did not have the correct knowledge to raise a baby. This lack of parenting skills and education almost led to baby Ezra dying. The Well Baby Clinic was
founded in 2002 due to the overwhelming need in the community for a specialized clinic that focused on improving the health of mothers and children. It started as a small private initiative
weigh and immunize babies and educate the parents regarding childbirth and early parenthood. 2009, the clinic moved into its current premises, at 27 St Francis Street, Jeffreys Bay, and
progressed from being a “Well Baby Clinic” to become the “Mom and Baby Clinic” by including a midwife practice. During 2009 the clinic registered as a Non Profit Organization and
explored ways to partner with the government. This public-private partnership was accomplished in 2010. The government supplies the clinic with vaccinations and medication and acess
to Laboratory services. The agreement was conditional that the services rendered are free of charge as the government supplies free primary health care. This clinic grew from an
afternoon a week, to a 5 day clinic with 11 full-time staff members. We have beautiful volunteers from all over the world that work with us for periods in the clinic. We have over 4000
families registered with us, and assisted 10 000 clients in 2017. The Healthy Mom and Baby Clinic (HMBC) is a non-profit organization committed to delivering professional private
Plenty of entertainment
for all at 24th KKNK in
Oudtshoorn
The programme of the 24th Klein Karoo Nationals Arts Festival (KKNK),
taking place in Oudtshoorn from Thursday, 29 March to Wednesday, 4 April,
offers plenty for festivalgoers.
“It is our belief that the arts are able to unite people from all walks of life, especially in South
Africa. Music and theatre is a language that transcends beyond the spoken word. The
KKNK also focuses on programming which includes several languages and
non-verbal works accessible to all,” says Hugo Theart, acting CEO of the Kunste Onbeperk,
the presenting company of the KKNK.
In the drama Gif/Poison/Ityhefu, Mbulelo Grootboom, Tinarie van Wyk Loots and Mahlodi
Kenny Rakotsoane tell the story of a husband and wife who lost their child, then themselves
and finally each other. After a long separation, they meet again at their child’s grave. He has
moved on and is looking ahead. She is still caught in the past. While the couple relives the
final moments with their loved one, they take their first steps to reconciliation. Nico Luwes
describes this production as deeply moving, accessible and brilliant.
The Ovation Award-winner at the National Arts Festival, State Fracture, a satirical, multisketch
sequel to Pay Back the Curry, is sure to send spectators into fits of laughter and
blow them away with Daniel Mpilo Richard’s award-winning performance. Directed by Rob
van Vuuren, it rips into the political landscape of the day and spares no one. Says playwright
Mike van Graan: “We had a great time with Pay Back the Curry at the KKNK last
year, so we’re looking forward to being there with its sequel. Everyone should attend the
KKNK – it is one of the best festivals in the country with quality shows, fabulous food, pleasant
weather, lots of activities to enjoy and a great vibe.”
On the Uitkampteater programme festivalgoers can look forward to What Sounds Like Now
with Joey Schrauwen, Nick Livramento Silva and Jurien Enschede, who visit the KKNK
from the Netherlands for their fully improvised rhyme performance that is doomed to fail.
Two performers take arms against the pressure to perform and self-censorship. Together
they have set a theatrical trap for themselves, out of which they attempt to break free in
front of the audience.
My Brother is a Dancer is an experimental physical theatre piece that explores the relationship
between two brothers who experience the world in different ways.
The boys create a world where they can both live in harmony and be treated equally regardless
of their abilities. My Brother is a Dancer is a story about using one’s imagination
as a weapon against fear. The story unfolds through a series of events that give us more
insight into their circumstances. The director is an exciting new voice and Rhodes University
graduate, Thembela Madliki. Her production Bayephi received a Silver Ovation Award at
last year’s National Arts Festival.
Ameera Conrad, who recently received an award for her contribution to theatre from the
Western Cape Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, brings the debut Uitkampteater
piece Lolly to the festival. Lolly is a living doll. She is all that you will ever desire
and all that every television programme convinces you that you deserve.
In a cross between drama and music, Valencia – ’n Kabarett is a short cabaret, focused on
the thoughts of a biased policeman with a strong dislike for foreigners and other women.
As the Donald Trump of coloured policewoman she will do everything in her power to make
“Little Somalia” (Belville) good again. She aspires to remove all the unwanted elements
from her environment. With Faith Kinnear and Pieter Odendaal.
There are several highlights for music enthusiasts on the festival programme. Amongst
them is Afrika My Verlange / Afrique Mon Désir with Laurinda Hofmeyer (vocals and piano),
Schalk Joubert (bass), Kevin Gibson (drums), Malako Wekuna-Soba (vocals), Yamamoto
Bonkuta Loyeke (vocals), Deodata Kinzunga-Walo (vocals), Kayembe Ilunga (guitar) and
Dylan Roman (accordion).
Directed by David Kramer and with musical direction by Schalk Joubert, the musicians
discover the treasure chest of African poetry from Madagascar, Mauritania and Senegal, as
well as works by Breyten Breytenbach and Antjie Krog. David Kramer’s Platteland is also a
production where the music transcends the lyrics and promises to be a truly South African
experience.
The KKNK’s complete festival programme is available at www.kknk.co.za. Tickets are
available from Computicket, Shoprite/Checkers and House & Home. Accommodation
can be booked at 044 203 8600.

Die fyn lyn tussen reguit wees & net
pleinweg ongeskik!
Sjoe!
Ek is ‘n 24-jarige wat my bedags besig
hou as ‘n admin klerk en snags ‘n student.
Jeffreysbaai is my tuiste waar ek verlief
inspireer met my skryfwerk. My droom is om
https://voelgoed.co.za/author/blogger-anri-basson/
Hoe jy mense behandel, sê baie oor jouself.
In Spreuke 15 vers 4 staan daar geskryf:
“Kalmerende woorde bring lewe, skynheilige woorde breek mense”.
verskil maak, ‘n vriendelike tong bring lewe. Die lewe is alles oor die reis, wees die
brandstof vir iemand anders se vlam.
The History of International
Womens Day Source: un.org
Introduction
International Women’s Day is celebrated
in many countries around the world. It is a
day when women are recognized for their
achievements without regard to divisions,
whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural,
economic or political. International Women’s
Day first emerged from the activities of
labour movements at the turn of the twentieth
century in North America and across
Europe.
Since those early years, International
Women’s Day has assumed a new global
dimension for women in developed and
developing countries alike. The growing
international women’s movement, which has
been strengthened by four global United
Nations women’s conferences, has helped
make the commemoration a rallying point to
build support for women’s rights and participation
in the political and economic arenas.
Chronology
1909 - The first National Woman’s Day was
observed in the United States on 28 February.
The Socialist Party of America designated
this day in honour of the 1908 garment
workers’ strike in New York, where women
protested against working conditions.
1910 - The Socialist International, meeting
in Copenhagen, established a Women’s
Day, international in character, to honour the
movement for women’s rights and to build
support for achieving universal suffrage
for women. The proposal was greeted with
unanimous approval by the conference of
over 100 women from 17 countries, which
included the first three women elected to
the Finnish Parliament. No fixed date was
selected for the observance.
1911 - As a result of the Copenhagen
initiative, International Women’s Day was
marked for the first time (19 March) in
Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland,
where more than one million women
and men attended rallies. In addition to
the right to vote and to hold public office,
they demanded women’s rights to work, to
vocational training and to an end to discrimination
on the job.
1913-1914 - International Women’s Day
also became a mechanism for protesting
World War I. As part of the peace movement,
Russian women observed their first
International Women’s Day on the last
Sunday in February. Elsewhere in Europe,
on or around 8 March of the following year,
women held rallies either to protest the war
or to express solidarity with other activists.
1917 - Against the backdrop of the war,
women in Russia again chose to protest
and strike for “Bread and Peace” on the last
Sunday in February (which fell on 8 March
on the Gregorian calendar). Four days later,
the Czar abdicated and the provisional Government
granted women the right to vote.
1975 - During International Women’s Year,
the United Nations began celebrating International
Women’s Day on 8 March.
1995 - The Beijing Declaration and Platform
for Action, a historic roadmap signed by
189 governments, focused on 12 critical
areas of concern, and envisioned a world
where each woman and girl can exercise
her choices, such as participating in politics,
getting an education, having an income,
and living in societies free from violence and
discrimination.
2014 - The 58th session of the Commission
on the Status of Women (CSW58) – the annual
gathering of States to address critical
issues related to gender equality and women’s
rights — focused on “Challenges and
achievements in the implementation of the
Millennium Development Goals for women
and girls”. UN entities and accredited
NGOs from around the world took stock of
progress and remaining challenges towards
meeting the eight Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs). The MDGs have played
an important role in galvanizing attention
on and resources for gender equality and
women’s empowerment.
The UN and Gender Equality
The Charter of the United Nations, signed in
1945, was the first international agreement
to affirm the principle of equality between
women and men. Since then, the UN has
helped create a historic legacy of internationally-agreed
strategies, standards, programmes
and goals to advance the status
of women worldwide.
Over the years, the UN and its technical
agencies have promoted the participation
of women as equal partners with men in
achieving sustainable development, peace,
security, and full respect for human rights.
The empowerment of women continues
to be a central feature of the UN’s efforts
to address social, economic and political
challenges across the globe.

Die bron van die ‘ergste uitbreking’
van listeriose in Suid-Afrika, is
afkomstig van vleisverwerkingsaanlegte
in Polokwane en Germiston. Dit
is deur dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, minister
van Gesondheid, bevestig.
Hortgro, die organisasie wat die
sagtevrugtebedryf verteenwoordig, meen
sagtevrugtebedryf voedselveiligheid as baie
uitmuntende reputasie as ’n betroubare
bron van veilige en uitstekende gehalte vars
vrugte.” Bron: Hortgro
The premium Italian-manufactured Maer
range of professional high-pressure
washers will be displayed prominently by
Goscor Cleaning Equipment (GCE), part of
the Goscor Group, at Grain SA’s NAMPO
Harvest Day from 15 to 18 May 2018 at
Bothaville, in the Free State.
Agriculture has traditionally been a significant
market for high-pressure washers,
as farmers need to ensure that costly
machinery such as combine harvesters,
crop sprayers, and tractors are maintained
properly by removing any dirt particulates,
dust, and general grime on a daily basis in
wash bays, GCE National Sales Director
Peter Esterhuizen explains.
High-pressure washers are also a necessity
for animal pens such as pig sties, chicken
coups, and cow sheds in order to ensure
compliance with local and international
hygiene and cleanliness standards. “The
application determines the specifications
in terms of pressure and flow rate. Other
factors that need to be taken into account
are the power supply and water availability,”
Esterhuizen comments.
Lusern is ’n uitstekende wisselbougewas
Bewerking
Die lusernplant het ’n penwortelstelsel wat
2,5 tot 4 meter diep (in goed gedreineerde
grond sonder enige fisiese beperkings) kan
indring. ’n Beter opbrengs sal behaal word
as alle moontlike verdigtingslae in die grond
tydens die primêre bewerking opgehef
word. Indien daar twyfel is of verdigtingslae
penetrometer of profielgat bevestig word.
30 kg/ha waar dit òf met ’n planter (so vlak
’n Ideale stand vir nuut gevestigde lusern is
215 plante/m².
Waterskedulering
Grondtipe speel ’n rol, maar die basiese
konsepte bly dieselfde.
watter voedingselemente aangevul
moet word. Pasop vir te hoë konsentrasies
voedingstowwe naby aan die pit. Dit kan tot
brandskade lei.
Saadbehandeling: Dit is voordelig om die
saad ’n sink- en fosfaatsaadbehandeling
soos Zinphos te gee.
Stikstof (N): Lusern is ’n peulgewas, dus is
daar ’n simbiose met Rhizobium wat stikstof
uit die grond bind. Goed gevestigde Rhizobium
stikstof.
Fosfor (P) en kalium (K): Alle peulplante
reageer gunstig op fosfaattoediening. Die
simbiose tussen die plant en Rhizobium
word ook bevoordeel deur optimale vlakke
van P in die grond. Lusern benodig groot
– dus verhoogde opbrengs. As riglyn, strooi
(NB: Hierdie
is net ’n riglyn. Gebruik ’n grondontleding
om finale hoeveelhede te bepaal.)
Sekondêre elemente: Tekorte van
sekondêre elemente is gewoonlik skaars,
behalwe in die geval van swael. Swael is
belangrik vir proteïensintese.
Mikro-elemente: Plante gebruik mikro-elemente
in klein hoeveelhede. ’n Tekort aan
enige noodsaaklike element sal ’n plant se
groei belemmer.
Die belangrike mikro-elemente by lusern
is molibdeen (Mo), boor (B) en sink (Zn).
molibdeen is betrokke by die omsetting en
binding van stikstof deur die plant. Boor
is betrokke by proteïensintese terwyl sink
belangrik is vir die opname van voedingstowwe
soos fosfaat.
Opsommend
March in the Garden
It’s not really autumn in the garden yet,
March in the garden is simply late summer
with a ‘day-old beard growth’ – a lovely time
of year when there is much to do and to
plant in the garden…
May the forest be with you!
A new trend is called “forest bathing”, and
on March 21, (also Human Rights Day in
our country), it’s International Day of the
Forests too. ‘Forest bathing’ does not entail
a tiring hike through a huge plantation, and
nor does it mean standing naked under a
tree when it is raining, to save shower water…
It means a little bit of quiet “me-time” in
the company of green giants, to appreciate
their huge value to our planet, and our mental
health in general – being in the shade
and protection of trees does seem to soothe
anxiety!
It is therefore important that we do not
allow trees to be chopped down right, left,
and centre. It’s equally important that we
take time to choose the appropriate tree
for different situations, (your local GCA
garden centre will know!) and to support all
tree-planting initiatives in our communities.
Trees are the green lungs of our urban
areas and planting them is a symbol of love
for future generations to come.
Smart planting – “The golden age”
You may have seen that metallic colours
like rose gold and copper are still on-trend.
Metallic décor and plants with golden foliage
or bright variegation is still very ‘in’ – and
they create lightness and bright accents in
pots or in a garden.
Plant lots of dwarf Coprosma hybrids with
their glowing foliage which will start intensifying
as soon as it’s a little cooler. The
foliage of a star jasmine called ‘Summer
Sunset’ is coppery and gold, and the beautiful
new cordyline varieties like ‘Electric Pink’
and ‘Electric Star’ are very ‘in’ too. Another
glowing specimen to plant, is home grown
Leucadendron ‘Red Devil’. All of these are
great hardy plants!
Bedding besties
March is too early for the traditional winter
annuals, but a perfect time to plant the
hardy and adaptable verbenas, lobelias,
alyssums, dianthus and petunias (albeit only
in summer rainfall areas). They will enjoy
the last heat of summer, as well as cooler
weather when autumn really arrives.
Hot tip: Visit GCA garden centres on Fridays
or Saturdays for the best and widest
choice of seedlings as they usually receive
fresh stock just before the weekend.
Rose care – promote abundant leaf
growth
Build healthy leaves by fertilising with a
rose specific fertiliser this month. With lots
struike.
kenmerkende nagevolg ‘n swart neerslag
of korrellokaas beheer word.
Wees versigtig met troeteldiere en kinders
waar dit toegedien word. Asyn werk baie
of leaves, the process of photosynthesis
remains in full swing, strengthening the
plants’ stems for fast spring sprouting, and
also to enable it to flower magnificently on
new stems well into winter.
The cute factor
It is trendy to go for smart, large containers
filled with pretty fruit trees like a calamondin
orange, lemon tree, lime tree, or kumquat.
Potted citrus trees can give you a harvest of
fruit throughout winter. Finish off your potted
fruit tree orchard with pretty companion
plants like curled parsley, nasturtiums and
dwarf marigolds.
Green lawn in winter
If you want a lawn that stays green for 365
days of the year, think out of the box – a
box of lawn seed! Choose a cold-hardy lawn
variety, which tolerates sun to light shade,
or one which will cover bald spots in deep
shade.
These lawn seeds are not only handy to
start a new lawn, but can also be used to
overseed old, motley lawns that go dormant.
The two grass types are compatible and
blend seamlessly into each other.
Germination is as speedy as between 5–10
days, and if all goes according to plan, you
can achieve reasonable coverage within 8
weeks, provided there is no foot traffic over
it. Seed your grass today!
Trending: The social networking of
plants
The idea behind this trend for 2018 is communities
of plants which ‘network’ together,
so natural prairie gardens with swathes of
ornamental grasses and floriferous perennials
are hot news! If you are still planting
‘one of a kind’, leaving large areas of soil
unplanted, you will be creating a lot of maintenance
for yourself. Rather pick a limited
palette of adaptable plants, and send them
to ground in numbers!
Recommended grasses: Fabulous fountain
grasses include Pennisetum ‘Fireworks’,
‘Rubrum’ and ‘Vertigo’, pink muhly
grass, Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’ (Zebra
grass), Carex ‘Frosted Curls’, Coman’s
‘Khaki’, Festuca ‘Silver Eye catch’ and also
the pretty indigenous restios like Elegia
tectorum (Cape thatching reed).
Perennials, especially those that flower
well into autumn, are worth every cent.
They supply lots of flowers for long periods
without fuss and can be left to their own
devices once planted. Do try some of these
trouble-free perennials for all conditions and
tastes:
Long-flowering; acanthus, campanula,
centranthus, diascia, gaura, Japanese
anemone, kangaroo paw, nepeta, rudbeckia
and echinacea.
Drought resistant; armeria, artemisia,
bergenia, felicia, eryngium, salvia and
penstemon.
Evergreen; ajuga, dierama, hellebore, heuchera,
kniphofia, liriope and ophiopogon.
Windy and coastal gardens; indigenous
forget-me-not, geranium, stachys, limonium,
lychnis, pelargonium, agapanthus, centaurea,
crocosmia, dietes, and salvias.
Note: Most of these will grow everywhere
and in any region. If you have any concerns
or need some advice, ask your local GCA
garden centre.
Bug watch
•Italian cypress aphid – start treating
conifers against this pest with a systemic
insecticide as a spray or soil drench.
•Ants – spray with contact insecticide for up
to 3 months’ protection, or apply granular
ant bait to eradicate the nest (the bait will be
carried to the nest).
•Termites – apply a systemic insecticide to
control wood destroying termites or use a
granular bait for harvester termites.
Cool season herbs to plant
•Chives and garlic chives – grow in sun
or partial shade. They also grow well in
window boxes indoors, provided there is
enough light.
•Coriander – grows in light shade or indoors
on a window sill.
•Calendula – healing herb with pretty, edible
flowers. Grow in full sun.
•Rocket – the peppery leaves are rich in
iron, chlorophyll and various vitamins. Grow
outside in a sunny spot and even try it
indoors on a sunny window sill.
Products to shop for now
•Be an early bird and start buying
spring-flowering bulbs which are available in
variety now, before they sell out. It’s still too
early to plant them as the soil temperature
needs to cool down some more.
•Buy a specialised micro-element mixture
to treat azaleas and gardenias that may be
turning yellow and which need a pep up.
•Stock up on acidic fertiliser and acidic
mulch (bark nuggets or chips) to feed azaleas,
camellias, brunfelsias and gardenias
before winter.
Coastal gardening
(Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern
Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal)
•Sow California poppies, cornflowers,
godetias, bokbaaivygies and Namaqualand
daisies in situ.
•Cut back spent heliconia and cannas, and
cover root areas with a mulch of compost,
or well-rotted kraal manure.
•Be kind to camellias and azaleas, with ample
and deep watering in dry spells or they
will drop their buds.
•Sow lettuces, Asian greens, radishes,
Swiss chard, peas, all the cabbage types,
carrots and beetroot. If you do not have a
dedicated veggie patch, you can grow most
of the above squeezed in anywhere, or in
containers.
•Start preparing a bed for strawberries by
digging in well-rotted kraal manure, compost,
a dusting of flowers of Sulphur (they
like acidity) and general fertiliser. Strawberries
can also be grown successfully in
containers and hanging baskets – use a
good quality potting soil.
•Waste not want not, so harvest crops like
basil and coriander, and process into pesto
for the winter season.
•Plant wild dagga (Leonotis leonurus) as
it is a fast and easy-growing shrub that
flowers profusely and attracts wildlife to the
garden such as birds, bees and butterflies.
The flowers are tubular and bright orange in
colour; however, there are white and salmon
coloured ones available too.
Woodridge College to present “Almost Maine”
From 22 to 24 March, Woodridge College
will be presenting Almost Maine, from the
pen of the American playwright John
Cariani, in the Pemads Little Theatre.
Almost Maine premiered at the Portland
Stage Company in Portland, Maine in 2004,
where it broke box office records and won
critical acclaim. It has subsequently proved
to be an incredibly successful student
production in the United States. The New
York Times describes this theatrical gem as
‘a series of nine amiably absurdist vignettes
about love, with a touch of good-natured
magic realism’ and highlights its ‘witty,
romantic, unsentimental’ qualities.
gusto with which the latter was brought
to the stage, less than two months after a
devastating fire tore through the Woodridge
campus, proved particularly remarkable.
Both productions do, of course, have
the complexity of human interactions as
undercurrent but whereas District Six dealt
with forced removals on the southern tip
of Africa, the characters in Almost, Maine
marvel at the Northern Lights. Notwithstanding
the latter production’s ‘foreign’ backdrop,
the insight and enthusiasm projected by the
youthful cast is inspirational – an observation
that attests both to the universal appeal
of Almost, Maine and to the masterful direction
of Caren Bestbier.
A story-line focused solely on love could
very easily prove hackneyed and woolly,
as so many ‘Hollywoodised’ romantic
comedies serve to illustrate. In Almost
Maine, however, the gradual unfolding of
each scene makes for gripping theatrical
entertainment, capturing the nuanced and
unpredictable nature of emotions in a way
to which both young and old can relate.
The Woodridge production of Almost,
Maine follows hot on the heels of its acclaimed
rendition of the Kramer/Petersen
musical District Six. The vibrancy and
Kemp losing her singles match 3-8; Demi
Richmond winning 8-1, and together they
won their doubles opponents 8-4.
Cara Smal and Megan Willis won both their
doubles matches with scores 8-6 and 8-3.
The final score of the day was 10-2. A
perfect season of tennis for these girls.
Boys: The boys played their last game of
the summer league against Woodridge. The
conditions were tough to play in, with a very
strong wind complicating the day, with only
Ian Jansen van Niewenhuisen being able to
beat his opponent: 4-6, 6-1, 7-3 (tie-break).
Thanks guys for a great
season! Well done GLA.
SA Open Water Champs
Grade 11 learner from Nico Malan High
School, Michell Strydom, competed against
the world’s best swimmers at the SA Open
Water Champs that took place right on our
doorstep.
On the 3rd & 4th of March the Marina
Martinique came alive with swimming
activity.
Michell ( u/17) participated in the 3- and 5
km Open Water events.
The 3 km event was introduced into the
competition program in 2005 to provide a
national open water swimming competition
for the age group swimmers and is contested
on an age group basis.
She received overall 12th place for her age
group, 17-18 years, and in her actual age
group, 17 years, she received 4th place.
Due to the 5 km being classified as an
international Open Water event, a cut off
time of 15 minutes after the winner was
implemented (FINA Rules). Michell
competitively swam her way into a 5th place
in her age group (u/17).
There was definitely no shortage of exciting
swimming at the 2018 SA Open Water
Championships.
Nico Malan is so proud of your great
achievement Michell!
