Children’s surgeon highlights concerns over
‘body piercing’ magnet craze
A leading children’s surgeon is raising awareness
of the dangers of magnets after saving the lives
of children falling victim to a new ‘body piercing’
craze.
Hull Royal Infirmary’s paediatric surgery
department has treated three children who have
swallowed high powered ball-bearing magnets in
the past three months.
Sanja Besarovic, a consultant paediatric surgeon
at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, has
written to the Royal Society for the Prevention of
Accidents as the latest craze where young people
attempt to mimic body piercings sweeps schools.
It is believed youngsters are attempting to mimic
body piercings, unaware that the magnets stick to
each other through loops of gastrointestinal tract
and could cause bowel perforation or intestinal
blockage if they are swallowed.
Wear A Hat Day 2018
Please get involved in Wear A Hat Day on
Thursday 29th March 2018 (or any day in March)
to help raise funds for research into brain
tumours.
This devastating disease kills more children
and adults under the age of 40 than any other
cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer
research has been allocated to brain tumours.
During Wear A Hat Day 2017, individuals,
families, schools and other organisations all
came together and raised over £300,000 to fund
our research.
Together we can reach our target of £600,000 –
enough to fund a team of researchers for a year.
Register online today: www.wearahatday.org.
Thank you for helping to fund the fight.
The Willow On The Farm
The Willow On the Farm, near Hook Norton, can only be
described as a truly magical learning adventure for 2½ - 4
year olds! Set on an idyllic farm and run by Alice Clark this
wonderful nursery is all about returning to the simpler things
in life – encouraging children to learn through play, through
real experiences and most importantly through access to the
outdoors and natural world.
The children are taught by experienced teachers using
Montessori and traditional methods and throughout the week
our Forest School-trained Leader will guide the children
through fabulous outdoor learning sessions at our very own
Forest School – they will explore the environment, learn to
take risks, solve problems, develop their imagination, meet
the animals and go on tractor and trailer adventures every
Tuesday!
A choristership in New College
and a musical education for life
Each September four or five seven-year-old boys
start as choristers in New College Choir, and begin
an extraordinary musical and educational journey. Six
years later they leave as expert musicians. They sing
in concerts across the world, record CDs, and take
part in choral services in Oxford’s grandest medieval
chapel. Parents often ask how an ‘ordinary’ small boy
is transformed into a musician of professional standard,
while still being a ‘normal’ school boy! The answer is in
our specialist music programme developed by the choir
director, Robert Quinney, with choir and school staff.
Our open afternoon on Saturday 9 June at 4.30 gives
a wonderful taster of the unique opportunities offered to
choristers in New College choir.
Does your child have Auditory Processing Disorder?
Hear & Now Auditory Integration Training can help
• APD results in auditory distortions and delays making it harder
to hear and understand speech in noisy environments such as
classrooms, or decode the sounds into meaningful communication.
• APD often goes undiagnosed as it frequently co exists with ADHD,
ADD, ASP, PDD.
• Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is an inefficiency in the
brains ability to process and decode sounds and words.
• Hear and Now delivers clinical assessment and intensive effective
auditory retraining with Berard AIT. Principle: Veronica van Nierop,
B.Sc; D.C; MNlp; N.E.T; A.R.T
What are the signs of APD? Sensitivity to some noises, easily
overwhelmed, poor concentration and focus, to name a few.
“I never imagined that the results from Berard training could be life
changing for my 9 year old with ASD, and in fact for us all.”
Brain4Maths
Brain4Maths is a project run by
University of Oxford’s scientists
investigating how the brain supports maths in children and
young adults. The study involves a safe brain scan using an
MRI scanner to collect brain images and a session involving a
series of puzzles. We are currently recruiting children aged 6,
10 and 14, and A-Level students in their first year who are not
studying Maths. Children receive a voucher and a Brain Art
certificate to say thank you for taking part. Parents will
also be compensated for their time.
Andy Taylor Golf
Andy Taylor Golf provides a fun, safe learning environment for young
people to experience and develop golf. The use of games ensures
that while children put into practice technical skills, they are not
weighed down with technique only. The coaching is ideal for children
at various ages from 6 upwards, the players are grouped accordingly
to where they are in their own golfing and personal journey.
We have a high emphasis on young people learning social aspects of
sport and etiquette as well as the physical sport itself.
We have a proven track record of developing young people from
beginners, two of the assistant coaches now with the program were
former pupils, to National squad players.
Within these principles of delivery, we create learning opportunities
for the young people to discover, with guidance, their correct
technical points of the game, including putting, chipping and driving.
Let’s talk Croc Eggs this Easter!
Whilst we don’t have any hatching eggs this Easter (our croc eggs
tend to hatch in summer!) croc eggs are so cool that we like to
talk about them all year round! For example did you know that;
• Croc eggs take around 70 days to hatch.
• All alligators and caimans, and about half the crocodile species
lay their eggs above ground in ‘mound nests’ made from leaves,
grasses etc.
• The other half of the crocodile species dig ‘hole nests’ in sandy
river banks.
• Baby crocodilians are called ‘hatchlings.’
Come learn more facts, see our nesting displays and discover how
much last year’s hatchlings have grown!
Tiny Tamarin twins born at Cotswold Wildlife
Park & Gardens.
The Park is proud to announce the birth of Emperor Tamarin
twins. The as-yet-unnamed and unsexed twins are on show in
their enclosure opposite the entrance to interactive Lemur exhibit
Madagascar.
Section Head of Primates, Chris Kibbey, commented: “Keepers
are delighted that our Emperor Tamarin pair have produced twins
again. The youngsters are doing very well and takes the number
of babies born to this pair to seventeen! They are growing fast
and enjoy exploring the enclosure with their extended family,
sporting their mini-moustaches.”
Tamarins usually give birth after a gestation period of around
140-150 days. Once the baby is born, the male undertakes his
fatherly duties. He will take the newborn and place it on his back,
passing the baby back to the mother to be suckled. The baby will
spend the rest of the time riding on its father’s back.
They are a fascinating species, with their spectacular crests,
ear tufts and moustaches. Emperor Tamarins were named after
the Emperor of Germany, Emperor Wilhelm II, who boasted a
particularly impressive moustache. The first Emperor Tamarin
identified was a deceased specimen whose moustache was
upside down, resembling that of the German Emperor. Swiss
zoologist Goeldi gave the species the name of “emperor” as a
joke, but the name stuck and they were soon given the Latin name
of “Saguinus imperator”.
This species also has many characteristics that are unique among
primates. The subfamily name of this particular primate group is
Callitrichida which translates as ‘beautiful hair’. Callitrichids are
the only primate group that regularly produce twins.
They mainly feed on fruit during the wet season, along with a very
small proportion of nectar, sap and fungi. During the dry season,
nectar becomes the most important component of their diet,
along with fruit and a small amount of flowers, sap, ants, snails
and insect larvae.
