The mark of a good beer is
obviously the taste, but what
about for a beer that does
good as well?
Brothers John and Mark
Newton fell in love with
brewing after diving in headfirst
to home brewing. They
started with a few extract
brewing kits and quickly
moved on to more advanced
full-grain brewing.
“Since then we’ve been
brewing pretty prolifically,
I can say that for sure. Almost
every weekend at first
we were brewing,” said John
Newton, who said they made
“a lot of good ones and some
stinkers.”
Making beer, as it turns
out, is as much of a learning
process as any, but they
didn’t give up and started to
get a lot of good feedback
from their taste testers.
“Then we decided one Saturday
to try to make our own
(Left to right) John, Mark and Scott Newton pose with beer
bottles they went on to sell as a fundraiser for LWSRA.
recipe. We played around and
looked at other recipes and
came up with something we
called Simcoe Kid, which is
a single-hop IPA with mosaic
[hops],” said Mark Newton.
“ ... That ended up so good
and we had such a good time
that we’ve just been doing
our own recipes ever since.”
They entered a few contests,
not expecting much since they
were still so new to brewing,
but surprised themselves by
winning a few homebrew
awards along the way.
“We just started dreaming
about what it would be like
to do this for a living,” said
Mark Newton.
Most homebrewers never
brew outside of the confines
of their kitchens or garages,
but the Newtons teamed
up with their friends at 350
Brewing Company in Tinley
Park and brought their love
of craft brews to a new level.
The name Woggly Square
comes from a saying that
John Newton’s 12-year-old
autistic son Matt has. Though
they aren’t sure what it actually
means, it means something
to them.
It’s a reminder of the challenges
people with autism
face and the inspiration behind
their brewing company,
