Mixing it up in Malibu
Chamber’s Sunset
Mixer at Duke’s
features fashion
show, more
Barbara Burke
Freelance Reporter
The sun was going down
on March 6, but the bikinis
were just coming out.
A well-attended Sunset
Mixer, put on by the Malibu
and Pacific Palisades
chambers of commerce at
Duke’s Malibu, included a
high-end bikini and beachwear
fashion show sponsored
by Malibu’s San Lorenzo
Bikinis and Pacific
Palisades’ Happy L.A.,
owned by Malibu resident
Dawn Baker.
“I am thrilled that we
have coordinated this joint
event,” Baker said.
Though the lovely bikiniclad
ladies and gentlemen
sporting six-pack abs were
impressive, most onlookers
would agree that 9-yearold
Brody Baker stole the
show.
“I enjoyed the modeling,”
Brody told Malibu
Surfside News. “At first, I
was nervous. Then, I realized
it was a good experience.
So, I would like to do
it again.”
Beach attire for women
included San Lorenzo’s reversible
bikinis and swimsuits
and Happy L.A.’s
casual beachwear. Meanwhile,
the male models
sported swimsuits and outfits
for that “put together”
look that allows one to
segue from the beach to a
casual dinner.
“Tonight, San Lorenzo
featured our new LOLA
line,” added Ally Duffy,
manager of San Lorenzo.
“The word LOLA stands
for loved once, loved always
and it’s part of a new
collection harkening back
to styles from the 1960s to
1980s.”
Maka Rouge provided
musical entertainment for
the evening.
Of course, the gathering
also included the raison
d’être for Chamber
of Commerce functions.
Representatives from the
banking, health care, real
estate, legal, creative arts,
dental and medical sectors
mingled, getting to know
one another and exchanging
contact information.
“I enjoyed seeing familiar
faces, as well as meeting
new people and my business
fully supports such
community-based events,”
said attendee Terah Tidy,
who owns Glamifornia
Style Lounge.
Those with established
businesses in Malibu, such
as Tidy, were able to mingle
with those who are just
starting new business adventures,
such as Rhonda
Jessum, who is to open Old
Town Malibu in the plaza
across from Duke’s Restaurant.
“This was a delightful
event involving a spirited
group of business people,”
Jessum said. “I’m definitely
coming back because
such connections will help
me build my new business
which will focus on offering
tours of rural Malibu
featuring the vineyards and
the horseback riding opportunities
here, as well as offering
vintage merchandise
in the store and online.”
Nurse Julie Wozniak, of
Vitale Nursing, noted how
Swimsuit models at the March 6 Sunset Mixer, put on by the Malibu and Pacific
Palisades chambers of commerce, take a picture together. Barbara Burke/22nd Century
Chamber events help attendees
make connections
about sought-after services
in the community.
“My company has been
in business since 2008 and
we offer in-home, longterm
care services for clients,”
Wozniak said.
Susan Payne, president
of the Pacific Palisades
Chamber of Commerce,
was delighted with the
turnout.
“The members of our
Chamber are very excited
that we’re doing this and
we are looking forward
to more joint events,” she
said. “I think it is really
wonderful to bring together
two such close-knit communities.”
Barbara Bruderlin, chief
executive officer and president
of the Malibu Chamber
of Commerce, was
pleased as well.
“We appreciate the Pacific
Palisades Chamber
for co-hosting the event
and we thank members
of both Chambers and
friends for coming to celebrate
spring,” Bruderlin
said. “We look forward to
a Summer Blast Mixer here
at Dukes and we hope to
see everyone there.”
He suggested checking
Plant Horizons Nursery in
Santa Barbara, and Monrovia
Nurseries. He added that he
has had good luck purchasing
clivias on eBay as well, but
noted that there are unscrupulous
sellers and the buyer
should use caution.
“There are no blue clivias,”
he said. “Not yet, but
people will try to sell them
to you.”
Like many popular house
and garden plants, clivias
are potentially toxic. According
to the American
Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals, the
entire plant contains a small
amount of the alkaloid lycorine
that can be toxic to
dogs, cats and horses if a
large amount of the plant is
consumed. Sensible precautions
are recommended.
For anyone interested in
acquiring unusual species
or hybrids, or learning more
about the plant, the 15th annual
North American Clivia
Society show and sale will
be taking place at the Huntington
Library, in San Marcos,
on March 17-18.
The next Malibu Garden
Club meeting is scheduled
for 9:30 a.m. on April 4, at
the Point Dume Club. The
meeting will feature a talk
by guest speaker Dani Brusius
on attracting bees and
butterflies to the garden.
