It takes time to go
through the Community
Emergency
Response Team training,
but there is no question
that it’s time well spent.
Over the past two
months, the City conducted
the first round of its sixsession
CERT training program
(read more on Page
9), and in late February,
18 program participants
completed the 21 hours of
training and graduated.
Where these individuals
take their newfound
knowledge from here is
up to them, as participants
have to meet additional requirements
to officially be
considered active members
of the Malibu CERT team.
But it’s an important step
in that journey, and Public
Safety Manager Susan
Dueñas noted that she has
never heard any dissatisfied
comments about the
experience.
The training sessions are
free, and they offer a whole
lot of useful knowledge in
a stress-free environment.
It’s not pleasant to think
about the scenarios in
which the training program’s
lessons may come
in handy, but having the
familiarity in advance can
no doubt be priceless.
Residents of Malibu
are fortunate to have
well-staffed and quick-torespond
fire stations, police
and reserve deputies, but
they simply cannot be
everywhere. Often, the
heroes and differencemakers
in natural disasters
or mass violence incidents
are everyday citizens.
In June, the City will
again offer the training sessions
in a more condensed
Imagine The Difference You Can Make
format on three Saturdays,
which they hope serves as
a convenient time for those
who couldn’t attend the
sessions earlier this year.
Anyone interested in
joining the June sessions
can register and find more
details at www.eventbrite.
Safety is a priority that
cannot be taken lightly in
Malibu, and preparation
is a necessity. Congratulations
to those who have
stepped up to make that a
personal focus, and thank
you to those who are
already part of the Malibu
CERT team.
