10 Questions
with Josh Carlson
Lincoln-Way West senior
Josh Carlson is on the boys
swimming team and water
polo team.
How did you get started
in swimming and water
polo?
It started when I was five.
My mom wanted me to try
out after my older brother
started swim lessons and
tried out for the team. I’ve
loved swimming since
then and swam all the way
through high school. Then
in freshman year of high
school, all the swimmers
played water polo, so they
wanted me to join, too.
How are things this
year as one of the
senior leader?
I have to step up as a
leader and so do the other
seniors, like our goalie Brennan
O’Brien. He’s got to
step up this year, and I think
he will. He was our starting
goalie last year, and also senior
Liam Hall, he’ll step up,
too. I’d say the three of us
are the team leaders. It’s going
to be hard without Cody
[Torres], but we got to push
through.
If you had to choose
to be a professional
in either sport, what
would it be?
I would definitely choose
water polo because I think
water polo is more fun and
more of a game. I just like it
a lot better.
What’s your greatest

memory in water polo?
My sophomore year, our
varsity team won the firstever
varsity tournament ever
in school history at the Schaumburg
Invite (2016).
If you could own an
exotic pet, what would
it be?
I think a dolphin would be
cool because it swims, like
me, and it would be cool to
play with it in the water.
What would your
splurge post-match meal
be?
I would say Asian zing
wings from Buffalo Wild
Wings. I could eat those all
day.
What matches are you
looking forward to this
year?
The Schaumburg Invite
(March 16-17) because we
want revenge from last year.
A lot of people on the team
thought we should’ve won
[the championship game]
because we were right there
at the end but lost the lead.
So that and also the game
against Lincoln-Way Central.
If you could be someone
else for a day, who
would you be?
I’d pick Michael Phelps
back in 2008 when he was
winning all those gold medals.
Just living through a
day at the Olympics and to
be that good of a swimmer,
would be cool.
What are three things
you can’t live without?
My phone because I’m on
it so much and it’s the generation
we live in. No. 2,
I’d say water polo because
I love it so much. It’s something
that makes me excited.
And No. 3, probably Mexican
food because that’s one
of my favorite types of food.
Who’s your favorite
teammate?
He was a former teammate;
he was a senior when
I was a sophomore. I’d say
my brother, Jake Carlson,
just because he’s my brother,
and he was a great role
model. He pushed me. That
season was fun. Sophomore
year, when I got to start with
him, just us playing together,
that was so much fun. It’s
fun competing with your
brother, especially when
he’s a great mentor.
