A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Moving into spring, I first and foremost want to recognize
and thank the following organizations for their current grant
support: Scan|Design Foundation, The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia
Foundation, and the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC).
In our previous newsletter I wrote about transitions at Nordic
Northwest and these transitions continue. To start, you may
have noticed our fresh new website! We also have brand new
staff email addresses. Moving forward, to reach Laila Simon, our
newsletter editor, for example, email lailas@nordicnorthwest.
org. All staff have the same format—first name with first letter
of last name @nordicnorthwest.org. If you are using old email
addresses, your email will be forwarded for just another month.
We formally welcome Doug Webster, who joined us several
months ago, as our Facilities Coordinator. His role on-site includes
maintenance oversight of the inside and outside of Nordia
House. He also brings valuable event staging experience.
In June we will celebrate the third anniversary in our beautiful
Nordia House. We hope you will find many activities to draw
you in. With our anniversary comes the continued work of
looking forward. The Board of Directors is refocusing its efforts
on our longterm strategic plans. Your ideas are welcome. Email
sandram@nordicnorthwest.org and she will forward them to the
Board of Directors. If you drop in, there is also a suggestion box
at the reception desk where you can leave your ideas. Thank
you for your ongoing support for NNW and “all things Nordic.”
Mike Nelson, President •
HAVE YOU SEEN
OUR NEW WEBSITE?
After many months of work, from concept
to design to implementation, Nordic
Northwest's new website is live! Our old
site, www.scanheritage.org is no longer...
we're now officially www.nordicnorthwest.
org! In creating a new look for our
online presence during this final step in
our rebranding initiative, we've tailored
our existing content not only to nonprofit
industry standards, but also to the
feedback we've received from you, our
members. Take a look through some of
our freshly updated features:
New Calendar: Yes, we've completely
revamped our online calendar! No longer
just a list of events, the new page features
links to individual program pages to allow
for easier sharing across the web!
Contemporary Design: We've
integrated more visual media to make
your visit more fun and engaging.
Board & Staff Contacts: Though staff
directory information has been available
in print, it hasn't been on our website...
until now! Take a look to learn more
about staff roles and responsibilities.
Newsletter Access: We've increased
the visibility of sign-up options for our
LAGOM
There’s a curiosity surrounding
Scandinavian summer homes; the luxury
of having a second home, a normal
trend for Scandinavians, seems out of
reach for those of us imagining supersize
houses equipped with large TVs and
outdoor pools. If you take a look at the
real ‘stugas,’ or cabins, in Sweden, they
are typically small with just enough room
and amenities for the family, sometimes
without running water or electricity, and
almost always nestled in nature and
close to water. These cottages get at the
essence of a new Nordic lifestyle trend:
lagom. The Swedish term refers to living life
in moderation by not having too much nor
too little.
Lagom parallels the view of Scandinavians
as minimalists, especially seen in their
architecture and modern design, and
the widespread belief in equality. The
word originated from the Viking phrase,
‘laget om’ which translates to, “around
the team,” meaning you should only take
a small sip of the aquavit being passed
around so there’s enough for all. Finding
balance, being satisfied with what you
have, and living life in the middle ground
are all aspects of the lagom lifestyle. It is
a cutting out of excess and extremism,
and has a fair amount of criticism from
those who see it as conforming to the
Scandinavian bland practicality. It is a
restrained pleasure, that harks back to
‘hygge’ with a focus on enjoying what
you have; what you need versus what you
want. A little balance might be just what
we all need; a cabin in the woods, where
the sky is your TV and the ocean your
swimming pool. •
In honor of the 100 TH anniversary of Finland’s
independence from Russia, a 6 foot-tall, 2,200-pound
piece of Finnish bedrock granite, the Finnish
Independence Monument, was erected and unveiled
in a ceremony on Saturday, January 6, at Nordia
House, one month after the 100 TH anniversary.
The unveiling ceremony included music by Con
Fuoco, a speech by Vesa Vihavainen, Finland’s
Honorary Consul in Oregon, and a blessing by the
pastor of the Finnish Church, Seppo Airas, as well
as a presentation and poetry reading by Katariina
Lehtonen, who was instrumental in this project.
Three organizations sponsored the creation of the
monument: Finlandia Foundation Columbia-Pacific
Chapter (FFCPC), the Finnish-American Historical
Society of the West, and the Messiah Lutheran
Finnish Church of Portland. •

NORDIC NEWS:
EQUAL PAY
in ICELAND
Page 3
On October 24, 1975, women in Iceland left their jobs for the day to signify the importance
of the societal contributions of women. That day became known as ‘kvennafri,’ or Women’s
Day Off. On this day in 2016, Icelandic women left their offices the minute they stopped
getting paid compared to their male counterpart; this resulted in tens of thousands of women
leaving their places of work at 2:38 PM.
On January 1, 2018, Iceland became a leader in the fight for pay equality around the
world. Passed June 1, 2017, by Alþingi, the Icelandic Parliament, the new law mandates that
employers with more than 24 employees must prove that they pay men and women equal
wages or they face a hefty fine. This certification goes through a system called The Equal Pay
Standard.
For the past nine years Iceland has been ranked by the World Economic Forum as the
world’s most gender-equal nation, closely followed by Norway, Finland, Rwanda, and
Sweden. And although Iceland has had equal pay legislation for decades, the gap still exists.
Dagny Osk Aradottir Pind, a board member of the Icelandic Women's Rights Association,
said to aljazeera.com, "I think that now people are starting to realise that this is a systematic
problem that we have to tackle with new methods... Women have been talking about this for
decades and I really feel that we have managed to raise awareness, and we have managed
to get to the point that people realise that the legislation we have had in place is not
working, and we need to do something more.” •
THE SETZIOLS
Beyond the Doors
APRIL 7, 2018 - JULY 6, 2018
RECEPTION APRIL 7, 5:00 PM
Photo Courtesy of Melissa Mills & Doug Tunnells
Nordic Northwest, then known as the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation,
approached Leroy Setziol in 2004 to design the future front doors of
Nordia House. At 88 years old and in failing health, Setziol did not feel
capable of taking on such a large project alone. His daughter Monica
Setziol-Phillips suggested a collaboration, with Setziol designing the doors
and Setziol-Phillips carving them. Setziol laid out the basic structure of the
panels’ unifying design—diagonal lines ending in birch branches. Setziol-
Phillips identified suitable Nordic designs and determined with Setziol
where to place them on the doors. The results were magnificent Alaska
yellow cedar doors that are the artistic focal point of the building.
In honor of these two renowned Northwest artists, our next exhibit,
running April through July, 2018, will feature works by both Leroy Setziol
and Monica Setziol-Phillips (her work featured in the image on the
right). Drawn from private collections across Oregon, these works of art
represent decades of two of the Northwest's finest woodcarvers honing
their craft. This exhibit is generously sponsored in part by Carol Tripp,
Tommy Griffin and Brooklyn Hardware Company, and is free and open to
the public. •

NNW MEMBER & COMMUNITY NEWS
Johanna Fedde's Borrevik Chest Now on Display:
We are proud to announce that Johanna Fedde's beloved Borrevik trunk will now be on
display in the Nordia House gallery. This beautiful hand-painted chest is a wonderful
addition to our public collection, as Johanna Fedde is a much beloved founder of NNW
and member of the wider Nordic community. The trunk was long a focal point in the
Fedde's living room. Johanna's father had it painted with Rosemaling around 1903; that
painter's name was Sagenes. While the lid is cracked, it is not to be repaired. Johanna
had to seek the permission of the Norwegian government to bring this trunk to the United
States as it was already more than 100 years old. When Johanna learned to walk, she
would walk toward this very chest and throw herself on it for support; this is among her
earliest memories. Come see this historic piece and learn more about Johanna Fedde
during your next visit to Nordia House!
Nordic Northwest on TV:
Did you know that Nordia House was featured recently on KPTV Fox 12's More Good
Day Oregon? We were invited to speak about Hygge following Portland being ranked
by Sperling's Best Places as the #2 hygge destination in America in 2017! Ava Hansen,
of Portland's Danish Sisterhood, starred in this brief yet informative spot on Nordic
culture in Portland. A native Portlander with Danish heritage, Ava discussed all things
hygge. Broder Söder was also recognized; shots of their æbleskiver are featured
prominently throughout! Head over to our homepage to stream the segment for yourself!
Our sincere condolences to families and friends for the recent passing of:
Linda Dalrymple, passed away January 16, 2018. She, along with her husband Jim, was
a 20+ year member of NNW. She was an active volunteer at ScanFair and other events.
Maija-Liise Carlson, born in Oulu, Finland, passed away February 18, 2018, in Astoria,
OR. Her daughter is Saara Matthews, owner of FinnWare of Astoria.
Mary M. Bergenser, born in Augusta, GA, passed away November 5, 2017, in Portland,
OR. She and Kim Bergenser (current member of the NNW Board of Directors) were
married 45 years.
Each of these amazing women will be missed greatly by our community.
This year is special; NNW is very excited to announce that Midsummer received the designation of an Oregon
Heritage Tradition Day from the Oregon Heritage Commission! This is thanks to our 2017 Scandinavian of the
Year Dave Alford who, with help from the League of Swedish Societies, our Midsummer partner, made this possible.
The Oregon Heritage Tradition designation recognizes those events more than 50 years old that represent what it
means to be an Oregonian. NNW is incredibly honored to be included in the list of events that go as far back as 1858!
Midsummer is sponsored by the Scan|Design Foundation. •
