FROM THE
CMD’S DESK
Dear Readers,
Welcome on board SpiceJet!
Not many people get a second
chance in life and I am one of the few
who did. As I complete three years
of my second stint with SpiceJet, the
airline which I launched in 2005, I feel
a great sense of pride in what my team
has achieved in this short period.
SpiceJet is back and how!
Twelve successive profitable
quarters, record aircraft orders,
industry’s best load factor for 34
months running, high on-time
performance — your trust and
continuous support has helped us
achieve what looked impossible three
years ago.
I thank all of you for your unstinted
support and faith in us. SpiceJet
reported highest-ever profit of `240
crore in the quarter ended December
2017 despite a rise in fuel prices and
other costs.
The credit for this remarkable
turnaround goes to Team SpiceJet and
each and every one of you — our valued
guests — who believed in us even in
testing times.
Today we have reached a stage
where our only competition is us.
SpiceJet is setting new benchmarks. We
have recorded more than 90% plus load
factor for 34 months in a row, a global
aviation record. Our 95% occupancy
in January was the highest for the
industry and one up on our own record
PLF last year.
At SpiceJet we have worked
hard over the years to provide air
connectivity to India’s smaller cities and
towns. We are India’s largest regional
operator and we expect to grow at a
faster clip, as we will add around nine
Bombardier Q400s and up to 15 Boeing
737s to our fleet this calendar year.
The Bombardiers, which will start
arriving in September, will allow us to
carry more passengers, as the number
of seats has been increased to 86 from
the current 78.
SpiceJet has been at the forefront
of the push for regional connectivity
and was the only big private airline
to be part of the first phase of UDAN
that aims to make flying affordable
and possible for every Indian. In UDAN
II we have secured an additional
20 routes, with Delhi-Darbhanga,
Mumbai-Darbhanga, Delhi-Pakyong,
Chennai-Tanjore, Delhi-Kishangarh
routes being exclusive to SpiceJet.
In March, we have added eight
new flights on the Chennai-Mangalore,
Bengaluru-Tirupati, Guwahati-Chennai
and Chennai-Vijayawada routes.
While we continue to expand at
home, we are looking at a number of
international destinations as well and
you will soon see your favourite airline
flying to new cities.
We received two prestigious awards
this month, a testament to the hard
work put in by Team SpiceJet. I was
awarded the ‘EY Entrepreneur of the
year 2017 for Business Transformation’
by Ernst & Young and the ‘CAPA
Chairman’s Order of Merit for Excellence
in Indian Aviation’. I share these awards
with each and every SpiceJetter who
has worked with great passion and
dedication.
I wish you a joyous Holi and a happy
Women’s Day this month.
KUDOS FOR THE
TURNAROUND
SPECIALIST
SPICEJET CMD MR AJAY SINGH HAS
BEEN NAMED ‘EY ENTREPRENEUR
OF THE YEAR 2017 FOR BUSINESS
TRANSFORMATION’
SpiceJet Chairman and
Managing Director Mr
Ajay Singh — widely
acknowledged as a
turnaround specialist —
was named ‘Indian Entrepreneur of the
Year 2017 for Business Transformation’
by leading consulting firm Ernst &
Young (EY) at a grand awards banquet
held in Mumbai on February 15, 2018.
Mr Ajay Singh has scripted one of the
most remarkable turnaround stories of
recent times. SpiceJet was on the verge
of shutting down in December 2014,
having cancelled hundreds of flights,
when Mr Singh stepped in and gave it a
new lease of life.
From staring at an imminent closure
to achieving 12 quarters of profit and a
load factor of over 90% every month for
33 months in a row (a global aviation
record), SpiceJet’s turnaround story
under the leadership of Mr Singh, has
been one which probably has no parallel
in the aviation world today. The SpiceJet
stock has emerged as the world’s bestperforming
aviation stock.
“I feel humbled and honoured to
receive this award, which is a testament
of the hard work put in by Team SpiceJet.
We have achieved what very few airlines
in the world have managed and this has
been a magnificent journey. This award
belongs to each and every SpiceJetter
who has worked with such great passion
and dedication in the last three years,”
said Mr Singh, after receiving the award.
A distinguished nine-member
independent jury panel, led by Dilip
Shanghvi, Managing Director, Sun
Pharmaceuticals Industries, selected the
finalists. The other jury members
included Jalaj Dani, co-promoter, Asian
Paints; Harsh Goenka, Chairperson,
RPG Enterprises; Naina Lal Kidwai,
Chairperson, Max Financial Services;
Meher Pudumjee, Chairperson,
Thermax; Renuka Ramnath, MD and
CEO, Multiples Alternate Asset
Management; Vijay Sankar, Deputy
Chairman, Sanmar Group; M.K. Sharma,
Chairman, ICICI Bank; and Romesh
Sobti, MD and CEO, IndusInd Bank. The
winners were carefully handpicked from
a pool of 250+ outstanding nominations.
The finalists were felicitated in Mumbai.
Under Mr. Singh, SpiceJet — India’s
second biggest budget carrier — today
flies more than 400 daily flights. With
the grand scheme of making every
Indian fly, he has been on a constant
pursuit to unlock the growth potential of
Tier II and Tier III towns in the country.
Building the country’s regional air
connectivity, backing PM Narendra
Modi’s UDAN scheme, exploring
opportunities for seaplane operations,
Mr. Singh’s novel and out-of-the-box
ideas have not just earned him global
recognition but he is today the face of the
Indian aviation industry. Recently, he
was also awarded the CAPA Chairman’s
Order of Merit for Excellence in Indian
Aviation Award. CAPA tracks the Indian
aviation industry in India on a 24x7 basis
right across the value chain through
their established consulting and
research operations in the region.
Coming back to the EY Entrepreneur
of the Year, it is the world's most
prestigious award for entrepreneurs.
The unique award makes a difference
through the way it encourages
entrepreneurial activity among those
with potential, and recognizes the
contribution of people who inspire
others with their vision, leadership and
achievement. As the first and only truly
global award of its kind, EY
Entrepreneur of the Year celebrates
those who are building and leading
successful, growing and dynamic
businesses, recognizing them through
regional, national and global awards
programmes in more than 145 cities in 60
countries.
ENVIRONMENTALISTS MAY BE
DISMAYED at some of the side-effects of
rapid urbanisation but there’s good
news on the greenery front. According
to the India State Forest Report 2017
released by the Environment Ministry
recently, India’s forest cover has
actually increased in the last two years
— by a massive 8,021 sq km. Three
southern states, Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka and Kerala, have seen the
maximum increase in their forest cover.
At the other extreme, among the ones
that have seen a decrease in forest
coverage are the north-eastern states of
Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal
Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya and
Sikkim. According to sources in the
Environment Ministry, the increase in
the green cover is a direct result of the
many afforestation programmes
launched by the government.
Continuing with its longstanding
commitment
of taking aviation to the
common man, SpiceJet
is once again an active
participant in the second stage of the
country’s ambitious and innovative
Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)
called Udey Desh Ka Aam Naagrik
(UDAN). Launched on April 27, 2017
from Jubbarhatti airport, 25 km from
Shimla, UDAN is a civil aviation
ministry initiative catering to the
aspirations of the Indian middle class.
When fully implemented, the
scheme will encompass 128 routes
connecting 70 airports across 20 states
and union territories. “My dream was
to see a person who wears hawai chappal
to fly on a hawai jahaz. Earlier, aviation
was considered to be a domain of a
select few. That has changed now,”
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi
had said while flagging off the first
flight. SpiceJet was one of the five
airlines selected to operate UDAN
flights in the first leg of the scheme.
“I am happy that SpiceJet is helping
realise Prime Minister Shri Narendra
Modi’s vision of ensuring that every
Indian can f ly,” Ajay Singh, Chairman &
Managing Director, SpiceJet, had then
said. “UDAN is a wonderful scheme and
we are proud to be amongst its
pacesetters. It has been our constant
endeavour to enable the common man
to fly since we began our operations 12
years back. In the future, we will
connect with many small towns and
cities.”
Last year, SpiceJet was awarded six
proposals in the first phase of the
UDAN scheme and had launched
operations on four UDAN routes that
include Mumbai-Kandla, Mumbai-
Porbandar, Hyderabad-Puducherry and
Jaipur-Jaisalmer. In the latest round,
SpiceJet has been allotted 17 proposals
and 20 new sectors. Out of these 20, 15
will cater to unserved markets of
Kannur (Kerala), Darbhanga (Bihar),
Ozar (Nashik), Pakyong (Sikkim),
Kishangarh (Rajasthan), Lilabari
(Assam), Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu),
Bokaro (Jharkhand) and Solapur
(Maharashtra) whereas five will be for
underserved markets of Hubli
(Karnataka) and Jaisalmer (Rajasthan).
SpiceJet’s forays into India’s
unserved and underserved markets is
being spearheaded by the very reliable
Bombardier Q400 aircraft. The airline
has 22 of these, each with a seating
capacity of 78. They have played a major
role in making SpiceJet India’s largest
regional player. The airline placed an
order for 50 Q400s last year, deliveries
for which will begin later this year.
“SpiceJet has been one of the most
enthusiastic supporters of UDAN since
the very beginning. We are delighted to
be a part of the regional connectivity
scheme, which, we believe, is an
excellent initiative of our Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi. We see
tremendous potential in the routes that
we have been awarded now and look
forward to beginning operations very
soon,” said Ajay Singh after the second
round of allotment. Many of the new
destinations that SpiceJet is f lying to
may seem unfamiliar to many. But each
of them is unique in its own way and
once air traffic builds up, has the
potential to blossom into an attractive
tourist or business destination. Here are
snapshots of each one of them.
SpiceJet flies to all the
destinations covered in this
feature. Log on to www.
DELICACIES
FANCY FAIRY BREAD
Fairy Bread is sliced white bread with a
generous spread of butter and sprinkles
added over the top. The best thing is that
these are a hit when you a have children
coming to your Holi do. What is even better
is that you can get your kids to help you put
this together. Fairy bread isn’t fancy at all.
Simply use bread, butter and rainbow
sprinkles. You may want to use cookie
cutters to cut the bread slices into attractive
shapes. That’s it!
Cheese plates served
with grapes, jam, figs,
crackers and nuts
A COLOURFUL SPREAD
HERE ARE SOME DELICIOUS TREATS INSPIRED BY THE COLOURS OF HOLI.
BY AARTI KAPUR SINGH
Pink faces, red hands, green
hair — there is something
so enchanting about the
mess that Holi creates. The
fact is that at the end of the
day, black or white, believer or nonbeliever,
does not matter. Because
everyone is indeed coloured in hues of joy
and celebration. Sling bags filled with
vibrant colours, water guns loaded with
mischief, buoyant spirits, old-new songs,
plates piled with festive goodies and the
blossoming spring breeze — there aren’t
many people who don’t love Holi, coming
up early this month.
Different regions celebrate
this festival of colours in their own way.
In Mathura, the festivities may last more
than a week. It is known as the Lath Maar
Holi, where women beat men with sticks
and sing songs. In South India, some
worship and make offerings
to Kaamadeva, the love god of Indian
mythology. In West Bengal, Holi is known
as the Swing Festival and icons of
Krishna and Radha are worshiped.
What is unanimous of course, is the
love of food — it binds people along with
the colours. These colours magically
connect with the emotions and moods of
all human beings and eventually make us
jovial and happy. Chef Anand Panwar,
Executive Chef at The Roseate in New
Delhi has evolved a few recipes inspired
by the rainbow of colours that Holi
generates. And this is, of course, moving
beyond the staple gujiya-thandai routine.
Here is eating to your heart’s content —
whether it’s at an intimate affair or an
elaborate gala.
FRUIT POPSICLES WITH
COCONUT WATER
These yummy and healthy colourful
popsicles will warm the hearts of your
guests with their amazing hues. Prepare
them in advance and keep. The list of
ingredients is more of a suggestion than
an actual list. The basic rule of this recipe
is that there is no rule. You can combine
any fruit or berry you would like, just
make sure you peel the ones that require
peeling. Other than that, it is up to you.
INGREDIENTS
Coconut water- if you don’t want coconut
water, simply make a sugared syrup with
cinnamon and sugar.
Diced fruits - Blueberries or black grapes,
strawberries, oranges, kiwi, pineapple.
METHOD
Simply put the diced fruits in the popsicle
moulds — take care not to overstuff. Pour
over coconut water. Freeze. Enjoy.
RANGOLI PIZZA
This rainbow-hued pizza is packed with
veggies inside and out and is perfect for
kids and adults. The veggies are delicious
and also very pleasing to the eye.
INGREDIENTS
For the dough
Maida - 500 gm
Sugar - 5 gm
Salt - 12 gm
Yeast - 7 gm
Olive oil - 35 ml
Water - 240 ml
For the topping
Pureed tomato spread - simply puree
some tomatoes with garlic and herbs such
as oregano and basil and sauté lightly.
Vegetables - purple cabbage, beetroot, red
/ yellow / orange / green peppers,
tomatoes, zucchini, olives. Cut into slivers
or chop really fine. All the vegetables
must be cut into equal shape and size to
make it look uniform.
Grated cheese
METHOD
Mix all the ingredients except for the
vegetables and make a smooth dough.
Once it’s done divide dough into balls of
150 gm each. Let it sit for an hour to rise.
When it rises, roll the dough in round
shape to make the pizza base.
Spread the tomato and grated cheese
on the pizza base. Now spread the
vegetables artistically — preferably in
VIBGYOR pattern. Bake this pizza for
about 8-9 minutes at 250° C. Once baked,
drizzle some olive oil on top. Serve
immediately.
RAINBOW
JELLY
This is
something that
can be made in
advance and will be a hit with kids as well as
adults. It can be made either with coloured
fruits from scratch or using ready-to-make
jelly crystals from brands available in
supermarkets.
INGREDIENTS
Jelly crystals (In at least four different
colours of your choice).
Water.
Jelly moulds.
Maraschino cherries or mint leaves for
garnish.
METHOD
Pour water in a small saucepan, sprinkle
with desired colour of jelly crystals. Only
one colour can be made at a time. Allow to
soak for a minute or two. Heat over low heat,
stirring constantly, until the gelatin is
dissolved after approximately five minutes.
Remove from heat. Pour a centimetre layer
into the moulds and refrigerate until fully
set (about an hour). Repeat the process with
all other colours of jelly crystals — but do not
pour one colour layer over another till the
previous layer in the mould is fully set. The
trick to making the rainbow jelly turn out
beautiful is to create thin layers and let them
set completely before pouring the next layer.
It’s very important to follow the directions
exactly and let each mixture cool enough so
that it doesn’t end up melting the layer below
it when you pour on it. If you rush it and pour
the next layer on top of your jelly before it is
set then you’ll end up with layers that run
and are mixed. It will still taste fine, but it
won’t achieve the layered look you are
aiming for.
When you have filled up the moulds in
this manner, let the entire jelly chill
overnight so the layers can fully bond. To
serve, cut into desired shapes or unmould.
Garnish with cherries and a mint leaf or
some piped icing.
NOT EVERYONE
CAN AFFORD A
every traveller
aspires to make
his holiday
experience as
this in mind, the
hospitality industry works overtime to
ensure that the demands of the everevolving
traveller are met. This year we
will witness trends that will make travel
a larger than life experience.
Travelling is emerging as more
experiential than conventional
sightseeing. The possibility of learning
about the culture of a place, meeting its
citizens and learning a skill during the
travel has become the precursor to
selecting a holiday destination.
Individuals want to get the most out of
their expeditions today and are keen on
TRAVEL
ESSAY
TRENDS TO LOOK OUT FOR
TRAVELLERS HAVE BEGUN INCREASINGLY SEARCHING FOR EXPERIENCES
THAT HAVE NOT BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT AND CAN BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF
THEIR TRIPS. BY PARVEEN CHANDER KUMAR
novel experiences which have not been
explored by their friends and families.
This is putting unique destinations on
the travel map like Antarctica, South
America and the Far East. Exploring offbeat
destinations is on the rise when it
comes to planning a vacation.
With the advent of Online Travel
Agencies, Airbnb and Social Media,
travellers are more exploratory in nature
and are inclined towards designing their
own itineraries. The idea of researching
about a destination, its cuisine, its
historical orientation and planning the
entire trip from scratch is more exciting
than the actual trip itself. Travel
destinations are being chosen based on
social media rankings and trends and
people are sharing their experiences on
these channels.
Travel organizers have now started
reinventing the ways in which they
create holiday packages as everyone
wants a unique travel experience.
Experiences are bucketed under
different categories to appeal to different
kinds of travellers. Adventure
Tourism, Culinary Tourism,
Spiritual Tourism, Luxury Tourism
and Wellness Tourism are some of
the categories designed to cater to the
preferences of the evolved traveller.
Wellness vacations and medical
tourism are emerging as a key trend
all over the world. People are
travelling to unique destinations that
offer mind and body rejuvenation.
These getaways are usually longer in
duration and involve holistic
packages like weight loss, meditation,
yoga, detox, etc.
Travelling with families and kids
is changing the needs of the modern-day
traveller. Hotels are rethinking their
service design for children and adding
entertainment packages and facilities to
take care of this new demand. Hotels
which, in the past, shied away from being
tagged as kids-friendly are changing
their offerings and market positioning.
Staycations and short holidays are
emerging as a key trend and this can be
mainly attributed to lack of time and
increased frequency of holiday breaks.
Millennials and Gen X have a different
understanding of travel and prefer
getaways of shorter durations which
help them unwind at frequent intervals.
Regular staycations to locations closer to
their homes excite young professionals
and Gen X travel enthusiasts. This trend
is creating demands for resorts and
destinations in the periphery zones of
cities. City hotels are also targeting this
clientele by floating weekend packages
that are more relaxing and experiential.
India per se will see a massive rise in
outbound travel owing to changing
lifestyles and double-income families.
New apps, speedier internet, compatible
phones and the urge to travel will see the
informed and well-connected travellers
conquering difficult terrains, beating
down language barriers and becoming a
truly global citizen.
What is the best part of doing films like
Ittefaq and Aiyaary?
Films like Ittefaq and Aiyaary allow me
to flex a different kind of muscle. A
different kind of preparation is also
required — one that challenges your
emotional and mental faculties. That
effort is challenging and since it is all
about feel and performance, I am really
enjoying it. The whole ensemble of
Aiyaary is overwhelming. Naseer Sir
(Naseeruddin Shah), Anupam Sir, Manoj
Sir — it keeps me on my toes. Yes it’s only
going to help but the pressure is
definitely there.
Do you remember your first audition? What
was it like?
My first audition was for an ad film. It
was rubbish and I got rejected. I didn’t go
through an agency, so they didn’t pay
attention to me. Then I bagged a Ponds
advertisement, where the girl was Sonal
Chauhan and we shot it in Bangkok. That
was a big one.
Did that change anything?
Honestly, not really. When you bag one,
you gain confidence. But you again go
back and get rejected for your second,
third and fourth and lose all that
confidence. It’s very unpredictable and
not for everyone. Only maybe for people
who are frustrated and have to make
ends meet, they know they have to
survive such auditions. Before Student of
The Year, to survive, I had to give a lot of
TV auditions. And it isn’t the most
standing in a line for
someone would
random like ‘Naam
It was like a bloody
jail where you have
to say your name,
number and act out
something.
Because half of
us were clueless, we
never got those jobs.
People used to ask
At auditions, they
make you feel
Also, I had an immense sense of selfrespect
even then, which people mistook
for arrogance. I would turn around and
say, ‘Tameez se baat karo.’ I would speak
in proper English and most times, they
didn’t like that. It makes you feel that aap
ke jaise sau log aur hai. That’s why
I digressed and became an assistant
director. It was a very negative
environment. It didn’t help me grow and
kept me in the same loop.
It was just people treating aspiring
actors badly, which was upsetting. But I
got lucky because I got the job as an AD. I
was lucky enough to meet a friend who
introduced me to the concept of assistant
direction. I knew this was the job I
wanted to have, if I wanted to be a Hindi
film actor. It gave me a chance to be close
to the cameras, the actors and see how
things work. That was one of the most
interesting decisions I took. I used to
visit offices of production houses, and
people thought I was there to audition
and I would ask for ‘assistant direction’
waale jobs instead. It worked.
You came from a rather comfortable
background. What was it like to struggle
without a godfather in the city of dreams?
It was difficult for me to deal with small
things on many days. I would break down
on days, and feel really low. But I never
thought of going back because I had to
prove a point to myself first and then
everyone else that I could do this. A lot of
people don’t know this.
But I worked for a bit
in Dostana too. But
yes My Name Is Khan was
the best film school I
could go to. I was an AD
there as well. Then I was
lucky because I got to
audition for Student Of
The Year and everything
fell into place.
What do you have to say
about the Hindi film
industry to people who
have never been associated
with it?
It is definitely the most
unpredictable field. We
have no clue what works
and no one has a fixed
formula per se. So I think
the only advice that I got
was to look forward. I
was advised, ‘As difficult
as it could be, you have to
detach yourself from this
aspect (setbacks), pick
yourself up and move on’.
And I took that advice
seriously. And so, now, I have started
working way harder on my future
projects. Failure may not scare me, but
yes, it does ruffle me. I do begin thinking
about why the film didn’t work. For
instance, I think in Baar Baar Dekho, the
message was nice, novel and sweet, but
people weren’t able to relate to it. It does
make you disheartened, but now I have
grown. As a person. I understand much
more. I was clueless — how to meet
people, handle success. Now I am in a
phase where I understand that success is
fickle. There is a focus, understanding
and goal in me now. The unawareness
is reduced. I am genuinely enjoying
the work and this whole process of
self-evolution.
INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN INDIA,
SADHGURU IS A YOGI, MYSTIC,
VISIONARY AND BESTSELLING
AUTHOR. SADHGURU HAS BEEN
CONFERRED THE “PADMA
VIBHUSHAN” BY THE GOVERNMENT
OF INDIA IN 2017
I have heard that if somebody consumes
alcohol or intoxicants in the vicinity of
certain sacred places like Mount Kailash,
it can have some unpredictable effects.
Is it so?
Sadhguru: It is not about Kailash as
such. Even without your knowledge or
willingness, there are some spaces
where you are in divine. When you are
in divine and you put wine, they don’t
get along well. He doesn’t like any
competition, unless you know how to
be. If you know how to be, you can use
it as a tool, as certain traditions of
tantrics do. They are in a space within
themselves where in a certain
awareness, they make that into
something else. But otherwise, if you
are just consuming alcohol for
pleasure, you will find it just won’t go
together. The more intense these
energies are, the more the impact
will be.
For example, suppose a person is
progressing intensely on the spiritual
path. If he as much as enters a bar room
where other people are drinking, he
can fall sick, though he himself did not
touch a drop. If one has crossed certain
boundaries he can go anywhere, but
otherwise, any number of people fall
sick like this.
Once you are on the spiritual path,
the whole energy is towards
awareness, towards raising your
perception to the highest limit. But
alcohol and other intoxicants are
about unawareness. Drugs are
something that get you on a high for
some time, and then dump you in such
a bad way – and in the process of doing
this, they just ruin you completely. So
when your whole energy is trying to
move in one direction, if you put a
chemical that works against the
system and wants to take it in another
direction, a conflict arises.
The same holds true for stimulants
like tobacco to some degree, but not in
the same sense. Stimulants aggravate
the movement of energy. With
spiritual practices like kriya or
pranayam for example, you are
aggravating the energy but with a set
direction. Tobacco, coffee, tea and any
stimulant aggravates energy without
direction. So in that sense it is
negative, but alcohol and drugs are
something that work in a totally
reverse direction.
• Desserts: A small cup of frozen treats
with fruits like strawberries or cherries
and dry fruits like almonds and cashew
nuts is healthy.
• Consume the following with reckless
abandon: Spinach, Broccoli, Cucumber,
Apples, Asparagus, Cauliflower, Green
Beans, Kale, Celery, Green leafy
vegetables, Water.
• Eat 2-4 servings of the following
throughout the day: Carrots, Bananas,
Berries, Peaches, Plums, Oranges, Figs,
Purple cabbage
Many women have been led to
believe that dietary fat is unhealthy and
contributes to weight gain. But fats are a
necessary part of a healthy diet. What
really matters are the types of fat you eat
and good fats are needed for a healthy
body as well as skin glow. Healthy fats
boost your brainpower and mood. Fats
are essential for healthy brain function.
They put you in a good mood and keep
you mentally sharp.
pulses. You can team them up with raw
or cooked vegetables. Wheat flour
chapattis or bajra rotis are great to eat
with vegetables having high water
content. Add salad to your plate. Have
juice to maintain your hydration level
high.
• Evening snacks: A cheese sandwich or
a bowl of soup is healthy. Eat low calorie
and low sugar biscuits. Avoid taking
more than three hot beverages a day.
• Dinner: Working women end up
exhausted after a long day at work but
it’s very important to have a complete
meal of chapatti, dal and green
vegetables (cooked or raw). You may also
eat fish as it is a good supply of protein. If
you love salad because it is light on the
stomach when it is bedtime, then,
spinach tossed with tomatoes,
tangerines and nuts create a healthy and
tasty salad. Avoid cheese toppings and
low-calorie drinks like skim milk is
MUST DO RITUALS
FOR A HEALTHY SKIN
• Wash your face at least twice
a day, preferably in the morning
and evening.
• Apply sunscreen beneath the
morning foundation/ BB cream
as per your routine.
• Keep your skin hydrated by
drinking 4-5 litres of water daily.
• Exfoliating once in a week is
a must.
• Never sleeping without a
night cream is a must for women
who want to preserve their
beauty.
• When travelling, use skin
wipes, moisturize a lot, add eye
drops which are lubricants and
avoid make-up on the plane to
detoxify the skin.
Healthy fats promote healthy
pregnancies. When you’re pregnant,
both you and your growing baby need
healthy fat to feel your best. Fat is
especially important to your baby’s
developing brain and nervous system.
They also contribute to lifelong beauty.
Fats are essential for vibrant, glowing
skin, hair, and nails.
Healthy fats help control cravings.
Because fat is so dense in calories, a little
goes a long way in making you feel full.
Small amounts of good fats like nuts or
seeds make great satisfying snacks. Fats
lower the glycemic index of foods,
easing the spike in blood sugar that
results from eating carbohydrates. You
also need fat to absorb certain vitamins
like A, D, E and K.
Finally, exercise a little in between
your working day. Certain yoga postures
can be done inside the office while
seated on your chair.
IPL
CONTENDERS FOR THE TWO CAPS
IT WILL BE A TOUGH FIGHT AMONG THE BEST PLAYERS AT THIS SEASON’S IPL FOR THE COVETED ORANGE CAP
AND PURPLE CAP. BY MKM FAIYAZ AHMED
THE ELEVENTH EDITION OF THE
INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE (IPL) will see
revamped squads as all the players
except for a few retentions were put up at
auction. The mega auction surprised
many as players like Dale Steyn, Lasith
Malinga, Hashim Amla, Martin Guptill,
Joe Root, James Faulkner and Shaun
Marsh went unsold. After some efforts,
the legendary Chris Gayle was sold for a
base price on the second day of the
auction. It was evident that the
franchises were more keen about the age
and current form of the players instead
of their reputation. The likes of Kamlesh
Nagarkoti, Shubham Gill, Shivam Mavi
and Prithvi Shaw drew attention after
their good performances in the Under-19
World Cup.
With all this action taking place
before even a single ball has been
bowled, it will be interesting to see who
will ultimately wear the Orange Cap
(presented to the highest run scorer) and
Suresh Raina
the Purple Cap (won by the highest
wicket taker) after this IPL. We present
some of the leading contenders.
ORANGE CAP CONTENDERS
VIRAT KOHLI: INDIA / ROYAL
CHALLENGERS BANGALORE
(RETAINED FOR ` 17 CRORE)
Virat Kohli’s incredible consistency and
hunger to score runs are unrivalled as he
continued his domination across all
formats. This year has already seen his
magnificence as he scored 558 runs
against South Africa in their own
backyard at a flawless average of 186.00.
Kohli was retained by Royal Challengers
Bangalore for ` 17 crore which makes
him the most expensive buy in IPL
history. Since the previous IPL, the
world has witnessed the ravenous
leadership of Virat Kohli. His ability to
win games single-handedly for the
country is what his franchise would be
hoping for as RCB is yet to win any IPL.
COLIN MUNRO: NEW ZEALAND / DELHI
DAREDEVILS (RS 1.9 CRORE)
The left-handed batsman from New
Zealand is one of the clean strikers of the
cricket ball. Since 2017, he has had three
T20 international centuries and has
averaged 46 in 16 innings. He has scored
654 runs at a strike rate of 182. Delhi
Daredevils bought him for a reasonable
price of ` 1.9 crore and his selection may
well give the team the firepower they
yearn for. Colin Munro played just four
IPL games for Kolkata Knight Riders
and was probably underused. He will
relish the batting-friendly tracks in
IPL where the ball bounces at just
enough height.
DAVID WARNER: AUSTRALIA /
SUNRISERS HYDERABAD (RETAINED
FOR ` 12.5 CRORE)
The belligerent left-handed batsman
from Australia is one of the destructive
and most consistent batsmen in IPL.
Ever since Sunrisers Hyderabad
acquired his services in 2014, David
Warner has been in unimaginable form
as he scored 500 plus runs in each of the
last four seasons. Warner has won the
Orange Cap in 2015 and 2017 and was
unsurprisingly retained by Sunrisers
Hyderabad for a whopping ` 12.50 crore.
Since 2014, he has amassed 2,487 runs at
an average of 51.81 in 58 innings and is
once again among the strong contenders
to win the Orange Cap.
ROHIT SHARMA: INDIA / MUMBAI
INDIANS (RETAINED FOR ` 15 CRORE)
The daring opener is one of the most
feared batsman in world cricket today.
IPL
On his day, there is no bowler who can
stop Rohit Sharma from bludgeoning
the cricket ball. He is the most
successful IPL captain with three
championship titles in his five years of
leadership for Mumbai Indians.
Sharma was retained by Mumbai
Indians for ` 15 crore as he is in the
form of his life in international cricket.
His 118 off 43 balls against Sri Lanka
few months ago was one of the best
knocks in T20 cricket. Rohit has a
consistent IPL record and is among
few with 4000 IPL runs.
SURESH RAINA: INDIA / CHENNAI
SUPER KINGS (RETAINED FOR
` 11 CRORE)
Suresh Raina may have not played
enough of international cricket in recent
times but he has always been a go-to man
for Chennai Super Kings. Raina has
scored 4540 runs in IPL so far and has
recently made a comeback to the Indian
side on the back of some consistent
scores in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20
tournament. He has been retained by
Chennai Super Kings for ` 11 crore. It
will be interesting to see him bat once
again for Chennai Super Kings after a
two year stint with Gujarat Lions.
PURPLE CAP CONTENDERS
BHUVANESHWAR KUMAR: INDIA /
SUNRISERS HYDERABAD (RETAINED
FOR `8.5 CRORE)
Bhuvaneshwar Kumar is one of the
strongest players for Sunrisers
Hyderabad and is among the most
consistent bowlers in the history of IPL.
He is the only bowler to win the Purple
Cap for two consecutive IPL seasons
(2016 and 2017). Kumar not only provides
early breakthroughs in the powerplay
but also stops specialist batsmen from
scoring freely in the death overs. Besides
having subtle variations, Kumar’s cool
head is an added weapon to his loaded
whopping ` 9 crore by Sunrisers
Hyderabad. He had a decent IPL
outing last year as he picked 17 wickets
at an average of 21.06. Rashid’s
strength is his accurate googly which
can fox the best of batsmen in the
game. After 91 T20 games, his
economy is 5.80 which is incredible
given the format. He is currently
ranked at number two in T20
Internationals. Rashid’s enhancement
as a bowler is worth praising. His
consistent performances and ability to
read the game makes him
undroppable for any skipper.
flavour to food. It also imparts a
body to thin curries. Turmeric is also a
digestive, especially helping the body
break down fats in the diet. Primarily
used in curries, it is also consumed fresh
as a side vegetable, often tossed with just
green chillies and hing. Turmeric leaves
are used to make sweets like patoleo from
Goan-Mangalorean cuisines.”
While most Indian kitchens use
turmeric in traditional cooking, you can
add it to spice up many other foods too.
Turmeric is always added at the
beginning of the cooking process and
sautéed with other aromatics such as
onions, ginger and garlic. This allows the
release of curcumin, which is fat soluble.
“Another popular use for turmeric in
cooking is golden milk (masala dudh in
north India). Considered an antiinflammatory
elixir, this drink is used to
treat everything from cold to arthritis.
Although it is traditionally found in
Indian curries, turmeric features in a
variety of American dishes and
condiments,” says Exec Chef Parimal
Sawant, The Lalit, Mumbai. Turmeric is
what colours American processed
cheese, mustard, butter, yellow cake mix,
popcorn and dozens of other products. It
is beloved in Iranian cuisine, where it is
commonly combined with black pepper,
cinnamon and cardamom in a spice mix
called advieh. Moroccans also use
turmeric in cooking. They combine it
with saffron in harira, a soup widely
eaten at the end of Ramadan. Also,
turmeric is one of the spices in the famous
mixture called Ras-el-hanout (similar to
our garam masala).
“Use a pinch of turmeric in scrambled
eggs, a frittata, or tofu scramble. If you or
your family is new to turmeric, this is a
great way to start because the colour is
familiar and the flavour subtle,” says The
Imperial’s Pogakula. Turmeric’s slightly
warm and peppery flavour works
especially well with cauliflower,
potatoes, and root vegetables. Likewise, a
dash of turmeric brings colour and a mild
flavour to a pot of plain rice or a fancier
pilaf and you can also sprinkle turmeric
into sautéed or braised greens like kale,
spinach, and cabbage. A bowl of vegetable
or chicken soup feels even more warming
when it’s tinged with golden turmeric.
While fresh turmeric root is especially
great in juices and smoothies, a pinch of
ground spice is good, too. The slightly
pungent flavour is usually well masked in
smoothies. You can also simmer turmeric
EXPERIENCE
WELLNESS
IN WELLNESS HEAVEN
JUST TWO DAYS AT THE ATMANTAN RESORT NEAR PUNE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL
LIGHTER, FRESHER AND REBORN. BY PRANJALI BHONDE
“RAISE YOUR HANDS, take a deep breath
and give it a good stretch”, said Praveen,
my yoga instructor, as I indulged in a
session of ‘Hath’ yoga. It was 7 am on a
Sunday and the surroundings were calm
with the silence only broken by the
chirping of birds. The early morning rays
of the sun, filtering through the trees,
invigorated me and charged me for the
day ahead.
By the end of the one hour session,
Praveen asked me to close my eyes and
chant ‘Om’. The word reverberated
around me. It caught me in a meditative
trance and even after I had closed my eyes
I could picture the garden in front of me
and the Sahyadris overlooking the placid
Mulshi lake. As much as I was energized ,
I felt at peace. Perhaps, the hath yoga
session at the wellness resort had done its
job!
I was at Atmantan, a wellness resort
nestled in the Sahyadri mountains at
Mulshi, near Pune. Spread over 42 acres,
the resort is situated in a Unesco World
Heritage site with crystals beneath the
Sahyadris that help in healing and
removing negativity. The resort has three
restaurants, Vistara, Te-Jus and
Chantara-the Lounge, all serving organic
food. Also, with packages like spa life,
master cleanse, fitness challenge, weight
balance, Ayurveda Panchkarma, Holistic
Health and Restorative Physiotherapy, I
was in wellness heaven! The resort offers
packages ranging from three to 28 days.
On arrival, I was checked into a
beautifully furnished room in “Arjuna
Grove” that had a balcony overlooking the
Mulshi lake. As I entered the room, I saw
the floor to ceiling view windows bathing
the room in the orangish red hue of the
setting sun. Each room is provided with a
bath tub giving users the option to soak
themselves in a bath infused with French
lavender Oil, Epsom salts, flowers, Lemon
etc.
After the concierge was done showing
me around, he added, “The resort does not
serve regular tea or coffee”. Instead he
showed me tulsi and chamomile tea bags.
I sipped on tulsi tea and watched the
beautiful sunset from the balcony. And to
banish my hunger pangs, there were
packets of museli bars, whole wheat
jaggery biscuits, dry fruits and a mix of
chia, sunflower and flax seeds, neatly laid
out in the room. Thus, it was easy to see
how the resort emphasized healthy
eating.
Soon after, I was led into the wellness
centre where Dr. Manoj Kutteri carried
out Body Composition Analysis. The
analysis was segregated into various
categories like weight, fat, fat mass,
muscle mass and BMI. Dr. Kutteri spent
the next couple of minutes explaining to
me my report and later added that visceral
fat was responsible for lifestyle diseases.
As soon as we were done, I was led
into ‘Maithili’ , one amongst the 23 spa
rooms, for a session of “Purely Atmantan-
Signature massage”. All the treatment
rooms have unique interiors that reflect
the treatments they offer. My therapist
worked on my body, from shoulders to
feet, applying and re-applying
‘meditative’ oil in long powerful strokes.
The meditative oil was a fragrant mix of
jasmine and sandalwood, that helped
relax my frayed nerves. The soulful music
playing during the massage helped me
disconnect from the world around me and
restore my vitality. My therapist even
placed hot crystal palm stones on the
different chakras in my body that helped
in healing. By the end of 90 minutes, I was
rejuvenated. Every part of my body felt at
ease. I was reborn. I was advised a steam
or sauna bath to detoxify the body and
improve circulation. My therapist also
suggested I leave the oil on for a good two
hours before I have a shower.
Atmantan follows the farm-to-table
model. All the ingredients are sourced
from their farm nearby. Even the cooking
methods used help preserve the natural
flavours and nutrients. However, when I
stepped into their cafe, my jaw dropped at
the size of a calzone.
I had always known
a calzone to be a
hearty snack. However, the one
here was so tiny I could finish in
one bite. Moreover, food was
served in small plates. This meant
a drastic reduction in food
portions. At first, I ordered
several portions of food to douse
my hunger pangs but over the
next few meals, I had learnt the
trick. I felt lighter and fitter and
soon enough had learnt my lesson
in wellness. Moreover, the food though
healthy, was extremely delicious.
Every morning at six, the ‘Kriya
Pavilion’ at the resort would come alive
with inmates performing various kriyas
like Vaman Dhouti, Neti, Jala Neti, etc. An
hour of kriya session was a hit amongst
guests.
Later that afternoon, I indulged in an
hour of ‘pranayam’ that included yoga
practices designed to quieten the mind.
From kapalbhati to sudarshan kriya to
nadi shodhana — it was an afternoon well
spent learning how to breathe well. As I
controlled my breath and mind, I could
feel a rush of positive energy.
However, this was not the only form
of detoxification. The resort also
emphasizes on technology
detoxification. Hence, when I reached for
my phone at the lunch table, I was politely
asked to keep it away. While guests are
allowed WiFi in the rooms, there is
minimal range outside.
Atmantan offers guests myriad views
and sizes of accommodation. ‘Asoka’ and
‘Arjuna’ groves have 80 garden facing
rooms while the ‘Acacia’ and ‘Amaltas’
Lake Grove house 24 guest rooms. The
resort also has two villas that stand
uniquely as the one bedroom suite
‘Mango Tree’ Villa and the two bedroom
suite ‘Rain Tree’ Villa. Though the Rain
tree villa is yet to be open to public, the
Mango Tree Villa is equipped with
private infinity pools, personal
gymnasiums, indulgent couple spas,
sauna and steam facilities and personal
butler pantries. It even boasts of a little
thatched gazebo that overlooks the
Mulshi lake and can be used for breakfast
or a private yoga session.
India. Gunasheela Fertility Centre is the
first private IVF Centre in the country
Preimplantation Genetic Screening
(PGS) using the highly sophisticated
and cutting edge technology of the
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)
platform, with the fastest turnaround
time for results. NGS technology aims
to improve pregnancy by deselecting
the embryos with an abnormal genetic
makeup and transferring the embryos
that have been tested to have a normal
number of chromosomes. Earlier in the
absence of PGS, embryos were chosen
based only on their visual quality and
morphology, which cannot distinguish
chromosomally normal embryos from
abnormal ones. In IVF cycles that
incorporate PGS, embryos are assessed
by their chromosome content and are
more likely to result in a pregnancy that
is carried to full term.
PGS is recommended for women
above 37 years of age, couples with
a family history of chromosome
problems, recurrent miscarriages,
repeated IVF failures and severe
male factor infertility. The procedure
also goes a long way in reducing the
likelihood of miscarriage, decreases the
risk of abnormal pregnancy, reduces
the time to achieve a pregnancy and
additional costs inferred with multiple
IVF cycles and increases the likelihood
of pregnancy with single embryo
transfers (eSET), thereby decreasing
the multiple pregnancy rates like
twins and triplets that are often seen
in IVF cycles. In this procedure all 24
chromosomes (22 autosomes plus X and
Y) are examined to evaluate any gains
or losses of chromosomes, also known
as aneuploidy.
FROM AGARWAL
PACKERS AND
MOVERS
ON FEBRUARY 15, 2018, Hon’ble
Minister of Road Transport &
Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, launched
Agarwal Packers and Movers Ltd’s two
mobile apps – APML Sathi and APML
Suvidha – in the presence of dignitaries
Y.S. Malik, Secretary, Govt. of India;
Jagdish Mittal; Major General Deepak
Sapra SM; Lt. General V.K. Chaturvedi,
AVSM; Commodore Gangesh Kumar;
and Pradeep Singhal at Media Centre,
Transport Bhawan, New Delhi. In
the launch ceremony, Shri Gadkari
appreciated the vision of Shri Ramesh
Agarwal and Shri Rajender Agarwal
and wished success for this new
innings. Mr. Gadkari also praised for
3000+ international students from
over 70 countries, and thousands of
national students from across 29 Indian
states. LPU also has tie-ups with 200+
international universities across top
countries of the world. With these
tie-ups, LPU offers student exchange
programmes, joint seminars, courses
and various study programmes to
aspiring students. At LPU, students
not only gain global exposure but also
imbibe diverse cultures, languages,
attitudes and ways of living. LPU
one-of-the-kind CSR activities being
carried out by Mr. Agarwal for truck
drivers in the form of Nindra Daan
facility provided at Driver Seva Kendra,
Dudu, Jaipur, which is focused on
saving the lives of truck drivers due to
the lack of proper sleep keeping in mind
that country is already facing shortage
of 22 lakh truck drivers. He further
added that activities focusing on the
safety of truck drivers are also being
done by the Government of India.
Mr. Ramesh Agarwal, Mentor of
APML, presented his idea behind the
launch of these two mobile apps. He
organizes its two national and
international festivals ‘One India’ and
‘One World’ annually, where students
of one country or Indian state represent
other country or state so as to learn
the important aspects of diversity
in practical and living forms. With
prestigious national and international
recognitions, accreditations and
memberships, LPU has also been
ranked amongst the top universities
in the world by leading magazines,
newspapers, TV channels and industrial
associations.
One of the strong aims of LPU is to
develop human resource that is ready
to be taken into the industry and play
their part in the development of global
society and the country. Thus, LPU
programmes have been created keeping
students’ aspirations and industry
requirements in mind.
took the reins of the environment and
awed the audience by showing his
undeterred will to work for his fellow
Defence veterans which made him
inspired to take all along and give them
an opportunity to be an entrepreneur as
well. He also expressed his belief that as
APML is the largest moving company, it
is his responsibility to penetrate deeper
into the country and reach the remotest
areas with basic moving facilities. His
vision was further explained by Mr.
Navneet Agarwal, Director, APML. This
event culminated with a brief about
these two mobile applications. APML
Sathi empowers Defence veterans
and unemployed youth to become
entrepreneurs and APML Suvidha
makes relocation more convenient by
providing every moving facility in just
one app. These mobile applications are
kept in line with our Hon’ble Prime
Minister’s vision of Digital India and
Skill India.
LIVE LIFE KING SIZE
BY SHYAMALI BASU (THE AUTHOR IS
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT & HEAD -
PRODUCTS & MARKETING,
HDFC ASSET MANAGEMENT CO. LTD.)
I RECENTLY WENT
TO A COUPLE OF
MBA colleges for
pre-placement
talk. I met many
enthusiastic
millennials and got
a chance to interact
with them and got
a peep into their thoughts. Their life’s
mantras were to Live in the Present
and Live Life King Size.
There are a few emerging trends
among the millennials. They prefer
a Rs 500 voucher and possibly become
the face that sweeps them all off their
feet as the next face of Charagh Din. All
you have to do is click a selfie wearing
one of our shirts at the CD Canter, like
sharing rather than owning. They
prefer an Ola or Uber to driving their
own car. They are tech savvy. They
prefer to book tickets or buy groceries
through their phone apps rather than
standing in queues. Even banking
habits have changed. They are more
‘in the present’ people and are more
health-conscious. Gadgets like fitbits
are extremely popular.
When we spoke of investments
they were not as keen to live a
conservative life to save for the
rainy day. Alternatively they fancied
purchasing Bitcoins. There is also a
start-up fever catching up with talks
of early retirement. It is good to be
an entrepreneur. But I wonder if they
understand that an early retirement
also means the need for higher
financial security.
the Charagh Din page on FB, comment
on the contest post on Facebook with
your selfie, and share it on your wall
with #CDOnTheGo. And finally, tag
your BFF.
When it comes to saving for
retirement, starting as early as
possible is the most important virtue
that would help in building a sufficient
corpus at the time of retirement. If
you have just started your career
recently, my advice to you would be
to start a Systematic Investment Plan
(SIP) to make saving a monthly habit.
The millennials need to be
educated on the need to invest. The
reasons are even more compelling
today than earlier days. Going forward
there will be a change in the way
we will live. Technology will ensure
redundancy of many conventional
jobs. Every industry will go through
disruptions and some jobs will just
disappear. Saving for the future is
of utmost importance for this very
reason.
COLOURS AND HAPPINESS
THE THREE DAY RONGALI FESTIVAL IN GUWAHATI WAS A SPECTACULAR
SHOWCASE OF ART, FOOD, FASHION, CRAFT, SPORTS AND MUSIC
The three day Rongali
Festival organized
between January 19 and
21, 2018 in Guwahati got
a huge response from
locals as well as tourists visiting the city.
The festival was a spectacular showcase
of art, food, fashion, craft, sports and
music. The music festival was one of the
biggest ever to have been organized in
these parts with a lineup of artists like
Papon, Nucleya and Zubeen Garg under
one roof.
The Traditional Boat Race which is
now a dying sport in Assam got a huge lift
during Rongali. Organised with the
support of the government of Assam, 25
teams competed in the race that was held
at the beautiful Dighalipukhuri in the
heart of the city. The race drew large
crowds and garnered a lot of enthusiasm.
Before the festival began a cycle rally was
also organized to create awareness about
Assam as a cycling destination.
The venue for this year’s Rongali was
Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra,
15th century saint, philosopher,
dramatist, poet Mahapurush
the venture aimed at building bridges and
promoting tourism.
SpiceJet has announced 20 new nonstop
flights on domestic routes starting
from February 11, 2018. With this, the
airline also strengthens its network
across the south with 18 new flights. Out
of these 18 flights, 10 will be catering to
popular tourist destinations in Andhra
Pradesh. SpiceJet will also become the
only carrier to operate between Kolkata-
Jabalpur and Bengaluru-Puducherry
with daily direct flights. The new flights
connecting the metro cities with nonmetros
will give fresh impetus to the
airline’s regional connectivity theme —
‘Connect the unconnected’.
The airline is all set to introduce
daily direct flights on the Bengaluru-
Rajahmundry, Chennai-Mangalore and
Guwahati-Chennai routes and a direct
Kolkata-Vishakhapatnam (second
frequency), Chennai-Vijayawada
(third frequency) and Bengaluru-
non-stop additional frequencies. While
the airline will operate daily flights
between Chennai-Vishakhapatnam,
Kolkata-Vishakhapatnam and Chennai-
Vijayawada, services between
Bengaluru-Chennai will be operational
on all days except Tuesdays. SpiceJet,
which is the largest regional player in the
country, will serve on all the routes with
its Bombardier Q400 aircraft except for
the Chennai-Guwahati route where it will
deploy its Boeing 737 aircraft.
Ms Shilpa Bhatia, Chief Sales &
Revenue Officer, SpiceJet, said, “We
start 2018 on a high note. Enhanced
connectivity remains at the core of
SpiceJet and we aim to further expand
our network by connecting more
non-metro destinations with metro
destinations in the current year.”
SpiceJet awarded 17
proposals and 20 new sectors
under the second round of
bidding for UDAN
SpiceJet has been awarded 17
proposals and 20 new sectors under
the second round of bidding for the
Government of India’s UDAN Regional
Connectivity Scheme. Out of these
20, 15 will cater to unserved markets
of Kannur (Kerala), Darbhanga
(Bihar), Ozar (Nashik), Pakyong
(Sikkim), Kishangarh (Rajasthan),
Lilabari (Assam), Thanjavur (Tamil
Nadu), Bokaro(Jharkhand) and
Solapur (Maharashtra) whereas five
will be for underserved markets of
Hubli (Karnataka) and Jaisalmer
(Rajasthan).
“SpiceJet has been one of the
most enthusiastic supporters of
UDAN since the very beginning. We
are delighted to be a part of the
regional connectivity scheme, which,
we believe, is an excellent initiative
of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra
Modi. We see tremendous potential
in the routes that we have been
awarded today and look forward to
beginning operations very soon,” said
Mr Ajay Singh, CMD, SpiceJet.
SpiceJet with its fleet of 22
Bombardier Q400 aircraft, which
have a seating capacity of 78,
is India’s largest regional player.
The airline placed an order for
50 Q400s last year, deliveries for
which will begin later this year. Last
year, SpiceJet was awarded six
proposals under the first phase of
the UDAN scheme and was the only
participating airline that did not
seek viable gap funding from the
government. SpiceJet has launched
operations on four UDAN routes that
include Mumbai-Kandla, Mumbai-
Porbandar, Hyderabad-Puducherry
and Jaipur-Jaisalmer.
SpiceJet CMD Ajay Singh gets
the CAPA Chairman’s Order of
Merit for Excellence in Indian
Aviation Award
SpiceJet Chairman and Managing
Director, Mr Ajay Singh has received the
prestigious CAPA Chairman’s Order of
Merit for Excellence in Indian Aviation
Award for his contribution towards Indian
aviation and the remarkable turnaround
and financial performance of SpiceJet.
SpiceJet registers 12th
consecutive profitable quarter
SpiceJet has reported a profit of
`239.99 crore for the three months
ended December 31, 2017 as against
`181.14 crore in the same quarter last
year, making it the 12th successive
profitable quarter for the airline.
Profits grew by 32% against a capacity
growth of 14% during this period as
against the same quarter last year.
The strong quarterly results
were aided by a higher passenger
load factor and a healthy increase in
passenger yields despite a substantial
rise of 17% in crude oil prices, a onetime
expense of `25 crore and an
inflationary increase of 3% in other
costs. The company witnessed a
14% increase in its passenger yields
(Revenue per Available Seat Kilometre)
“I am honoured to receive this
award. This is a recognition of SpiceJet’s
spectacular comeback. This award
belongs to each and every SpiceJetter
who has worked with such passion
and dedication in the last three years,”
said Mr Singh. To Mr Singh goes the
credit of scripting one of the most
remarkable turnaround stories of recent
times. SpiceJet was on the verge of
shutting down in December 2014, having
while its average domestic load factor
was 95%. SpiceJet has recorded more
than 90% load factor for 33 successive
months, a feat unparalleled globally.
The airline reported an operating
revenue of `2,081.95 crore in the
quarter. On an EBITDA basis, SpiceJet
reported a profit of `330.73 crore.
On an EBITDAR basis, the company
reported a profit of `597.04 crore.
Mr Ajay Singh, CMD, SpiceJet said,
“Twelve successive profitable quarters,
record aircraft orders, industry’s best
load factor, high on-time performance
and constantly exploring new growth
avenues – SpiceJet remains firmly on
track in its long term growth strategy.
This has been yet another great
quarter for us and I am very pleased
with the exceptional performance of
my team.”
cancelled hundreds of flights, when
Mr Singh stepped in and gave it a new
lease of life. From staring at an imminent
closure to achieving 12 quarters of profit
and a load factor of over 90% every
month for 33 months in a row (a global
aviation record), SpiceJet’s turnaround
story under the leadership of Ajay Singh,
has been one which probably has no
parallel in the aviation world today.
“SpiceJet has had a magnificent
journey since Ajay Singh took over and
rescued the airline from near closure, to
a track record of 12 consecutive quarters
of profitability,” said Peter Harbison,
Executive Chairman, CAPA – Centre for
Aviation. “Not only has the operational
performance improved significantly, but
SpiceJet has maintained profitability
through its operations and is poised for
growth with more than 200 aircraft on
order. The turnaround of SpiceJet has not
only been a great success story for the
company, but it has improved confidence
in Indian industry overall,” Harbison
added.
With many firsts to its credit
for the October-December quarter,
SpiceJet became the only airline to
commence daily direct operations
on the international sector of
Ahmedabad-Bangkok. It was also
the only player to introduce daily
non-stop flights on Delhi-Jodhpur,
Jaipur-Jodhpur, Ahmedabad-Varanasi,
Kolkata–Jabalpur, Bengaluru-
Puducherry and Bengaluru-Bagdogra
sectors, among others. On UDAN, the
company secured additional 20 routes
that will further increase its footprint
in regional operations. The quarter
also witnessed SpiceJet, the country’s
largest regional player, conduct
successful seaplane trials in Mumbai
and Vijayawada and launch its fourth
flight under UDAN connecting
Jaipur-Jaisalmer.
MY TOWN
Our ongoing series in which we look at various Indian cities through the
eyes of SpiceJet staffers. This month, Rakhi Verma, Sr. Security Executive,
Security Department, Airport Services, holds forth on Udaipur
Clockwise from above: Sheesh Mahal within
the City Palace; the stunning Jag Mandir
Palace and the Gangaur Ghat
SpiceJet flies to Udaipur. Log
on to www.spicejet.com for
details
Connection to the city: I
shifted to Udaipur for work - I
have been with SpiceJet for
two years.
Best thing about Udaipur:
People here are quite
broadminded. Udaipur’s lakes
and monuments are famous
all over the world. The tourist
places here are open till
midnight. Even street food
is available till late into the
night.
Favourite eating place: I
am a diehard foodie and
my favourite eating place is
Sukhadia Circle, a recreational
centre with many fast food
outlets. I discovered it through
some friends. There are many
food options available at
these outlets and they are all
reasonably priced. Whenever
I am at Sukhadia Circle, I
love having the Lal Maas (highly spicy
Rajasthani Mutton Curry).
Local attractions: There is something
for every kind of tourist in Udaipur.
Among the palaces, I would suggest
visiting the City Palace complex;
Udaivilas, which now functions as a
luxury hotel; Sajjan Garh which was
built in the 19th century; and Jag
Mandir, also known as the Lake Garden
Palace. The Jagdish Temple in the
centre of the city has been a place of
worship since the last 367 years. Two
artificial lakes, Fateh Sagar Lake and
Lake Pichola lake, draw many visitors.
Many cultural festivals take place at the
Gangaur Ghat. Located opposite it is
the Ambrai Ghat which offers stunning
views of the City Palace.
Recommended places nearby:
Udaipur can serve as your springboard
to a number of interesting places
in the vicinity. These include the
likes of Srinathji Temple, considered
an important pilgrimage centre by
Vasihnavs and the Sanwariaji Temple
on the Udaipur-Chittorgarh highway.
Ranakpur is well-known for its Sun
Temple and a series of beautiful Jain
temples. Kumbalgarh is a World
Heritage Site included in the Hill Forts
of Rajasthan.
Udaipur when compared to other
places: I have stayed in Jaipur,
Lucknow, Kolkata and Dhanbad.
Compared to these cities, there is not
much happening in Udaipur. But there is
less of crime here. You can move around
safely on your own.
GROWTH TRAJECTORY
BHARATHI CEMENT is part of Vicat
Group of France. The capacity of
of the Kadapa cement plant is 5
million tonnes in Andhra Pradesh
and 2.75 million tonnes in Kalburgi
district of Karnataka. Vicat Group
has a total capacity of 7.75 million
tonnes in India. This makes it one
of the leading players in the Indian
cement industry. A global cement
player with an expertise of 200
years, the Vicat Group operates
in areas of Cement, Concrete
Products and Aggregates. The
company was started by Joseph
Vicat, son of Louis Vicat, an
engineer who invented artificial
cement in 1817. Bharathi Cement
produces OPC53, OPC43, PPC and
PSC. The premium cement is of
superior quality, the services are
of world class, and the packing
is tamper proof. It was the first
cement company in combined
Andhra Pradesh to install an
ultramodern cement plant with
quality being controlled by a
Robolab to ensure consistency
in every bag of cement. The
commissioning of Kalburgi Cement
in October 2012 with a capacity
of 2.75 million tonnes per annum
was a milestone in the history of
Bharathi. Bharathi Cement is being
sold in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana,
Goa, Pondicherry, Andaman
Nicobar Islands and Maharashtra.
deployed 47 mobile vans and 15
two wheeler mobile labs in all
southern states and Maharashtra.
These mobile vans are manned by
highly qualified technical officers
who train masons, construction
supervisors and customers about
good construction practices. These
mobile vans are continuously
on the road for site visits and to
advocate free construction tips to
end customers round the clock.
UNIQUE LINEUP
AT IMS IBIZA
INTERNATIONAL MUSIC SUMMIT (IMS)
has announced details of its annual Dalt
Vila event in Ibiza Old Town, the finale
of the summit and widely regarded as
the official opening of the Ibiza summer
season. Now in its 11th year, IMS Ibiza
is a three-day event for the electronic
music industry held annually in the
dance music capital of the world. For
this closing finale IMS has curated
the most unique lineup that Ibiza will
witness in 2018, with a backdrop of the
sun setting over the historic 2,500-yearold
fort and UNESCO World Heritage
the Mediterranean Sea. With both
legendary and iconic artists sharing the
stage with the most exciting emerging
for his third IMS Dalt Vila appearance.
Also announced is seminal New York
Other outstanding sets will come
IMS co-founder and industry icon Pete
Tong — all seasoned Ibizan artists with
long and rich histories on the island’s
dance floors. Ensuring the international
pace is upheld is Korean artist Peggy
Gou and Middle East influenced DJ
duo Bedouin. IMS Dalt Vila will also
