INTRODUCING
YOUR IN-FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

FROM THE
CMD’S DESK
Dear Readers,
Welcome aboard SpiceJet!
The summer solstice is over and
monsoons are here to mark the beginning of
a new season. It is time for leisure tourists to
pack up and fly to a destination of choice. For
business travellers too, it is time to rejuvenate
and think afresh.
At SpiceJet, we are gearing up to receive
the first batch of our brand new Boeing 737
MAX planes in August.
Our massive aircraft orders with Boeing
and Bombardier, that shone a global spotlight
on Indian aviation, will hugely enhance the
flying experience for you, our customers,
expand our reach and operations, provide
direct connectivity with non-stop flights on
domestic and international routes and give a
fresh impetus to leisure and business travel.
The Indian air transport industry is
witnessing strong and resilient growth in
passenger traffic like never before. Nearly
100 flights take off every hour from various
airports across the country. A large young
workforce increasingly moving to urban
areas is transforming consumption and travel
patterns. In 2017, about 500 commercial
planes flew 117 million passengers on
domestic routes.
SpiceJet flies more than 54,000
passengers every day (on an average) with
over 410 landings. We recently added 10 new
domestic flights to reinforce our network
strength in south India. There is a new daily
direct flight on Chennai-Mangaluru sector
and additional frequencies on Hyderabad-
Rajahmundry, Chennai-Kozhikode, Chennai-
Hyderabad and Bengaluru-Kozhikode sectors.
We have deployed our Bombardier Q400
aircraft on these routes.
From July 1, 2018 we are adding 14 new
domestic flights that will further strengthen
our network. These include direct flights
on sectors like Patna-Pune, Chennai-
Rajahmundry, Hyderabad-Calicut and
Bengaluru-Tuticorin.
Passengers can easily travel to a host of
other cities in our domestic and international
network via multiple onward connections.
New routes and destinations mean safe, ontime,
cost-effective and comfortable journeys
for you. Evening flights on key sectors in
addition to the existing morning flights will
help business travellers conveniently plan
same-day trips.
The addition of daily direct Delhi-Kanpur-
Delhi flight from July 3 marks a landmark
year of SpiceJet operating flights under the
government’s UDAN scheme to connect
smaller cities and towns. We operate 15 flights
under UDAN and provide high consumer
value on routes like Mumbai-Porbandar,
Mumbai-Kandla-Mumbai, Hyderabad-
Puducherry-Hyderabad, Jaipur-Jaisalmer-
Jaipur, Delhi-Adampur-Delhi, Chennai-Hubli-
Chennai and Hyderabad-Hubli-Hyderabad.
We firmly believe there is tremendous
potential for air travel in India — a hugely
diverse, multi-cultural and geographicallyvast
country with all seasons and terrains.
Intra-regional travel will grow its share further,
stimulate long-term economic growth and
allow accompanying social benefits to spread
among communities.
SpiceJet continues to set new
benchmarks with record on-time performance
and industry’s highest load factors. This is the
38th month in a row we have flown with the
highest passenger load factor, averaging over
90% in the Indian aviation market, which is
also a global aviation record.
We will put more cities and towns on the
aviation map and make air travel more and
more affordable and accessible for all Indians.
So enjoy a ‘Red. Hot. Spicy’ experience each
time you fly with us. And do write to us for any
suggestions or comments.
FLAMINGO COUNTRY
THEY ARE UNIQUE with their oddshaped
beaks, long legs with webbed
feet, rosy pink plumage and the quirky
habit of standing on one foot. No wonder
these beautiful migratory birds are
universally loved and draw curious
crowds wherever they congregate in
India. Popular flamingo-spotting locales
include Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
(Rajasthan), Sewri Creek (Mumbai),
Chilka Lake (Odisha), Nalsarovar Lake
(Gujarat), Bhigwan (Maharashtra) and
many beaches in Goa. Now you will see
more of them in Thane on the outskirts
of Mumbai. The Maharashtra
government recently notified an area of
16.9 sq km as the Thane Creek Flamingo
Sanctuary. The sanctuary will come
under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai
mangrove conservation unit. Every year,
about 30,000 flamingos are reported to
migrate to this area.
TOWARDS DYNAMIC GROWTH
ESTABLISHED UNDER THE MINISTRY OF
DEVELOPMENT OF NORTH EAST REGION, Government of
India, the North East Council has been doing yeoman service
towards all-round progress of the eight states that the Council
oversees. Apart from economic and social development, the
Council has also recently undertaken major steps for the
promotion of tourism, art and culture. These include giving a
fillip to eco-tourism in Sikkim, promoting adventure tourism
in Assam and Meghalaya and promoting religious tourism by
highlighting the many attractions of Buddhist circuits in
Sikkim, Manipur and Tripura. These initiatives will surely go a
long way in contributing to the dynamic growth of the region.
SO YOU THOUGHT KERALA was perfect only for a leisurely boat ride in the backwaters of Alappuzha or for a gingerly stroll
the Kerala Adventure Trail last year and it has caught on like the proverbial wildfire. On offer along the various routes are
DISCUSS UTTARAKHAND as a tourist attraction and the talk
will invariably veer towards its beautiful rivers (Alaknanda,
Bhagirathi, Mandakini and Sarayu, apart from the big two
Ganges and Yamuna), pilgrimage centres (Badrinath,
Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri) or hill stations (Mussoorie,
Nainital, Binsar, Chakrata, Almora and Bhimtal). Some may even
sing praises of Auli being one of the most attractive ski resorts in
this part of the world. But rarely is the state recognized as the
abode of stunning national parks, even though it has many of
them. Here are four that we have always liked and keep
returning to over and over again.
BIG CENTRAL BOOST FOR HP
TOURISM •
Like most of its inhabitants, the state
government of Himachal Pradesh prefers to
keep a low profile, even though it has much
to talk about, including its myriad tourist
attractions. But now the state’s tourism sector
will come into sharper focus, with a little
help from the Centre. The Union government
has sanctioned Rs 1,800 crore towards the
development of tourism in Himachal Pradesh
(HP). Most of the funds will be used for
developing lesser known and unexplored
places which hold great tourism potential. For
example, Garagushaini.
WATER BODIES
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has
constituted 19 teams to take up cleaning of polluted beaches
(in nine states) and river fronts (19 states). Many lakes all over
the country have also been identified. A special cleanliness
drive will be carried out at the Yamuna riverfront in Delhi.
Apart from government officials, the teams will involve school
and college students and local communities. So look out for
`Swachh Nadiyaan' all around you.
RAJASTHAN TARGETS MORE DOMESTIC
TOURISTS
With an aim to increase to 50 lakh the number of domestic
tourists in the state, Rajasthan’s Department of Tourism is
organizing the state’s first ever Domestic Travel Mart 2018. The
Rajasthan Domestic Travel Mart 2018 (RDTM) will be organised
from July 20 to 22 in Jaipur. The event will see keen buyers
along with the support of Madras Fun
SKI DUBAI’S SUCCESS WITH BREEDING
PENGUINS
If all goes well, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation
(GTDC) will launch its taxi app GoaMiles this month. Around
2,800 licensed taxi drivers in Goa have shown an interest
in using the app and more are expected to follow suit. The
free app will be available for download on both, Android and
iOS platforms. The launch of the app will be beneficial for all
concerned. Tourists will be able to directly contact licensed taxi
drivers. They will also benefit with the taxi fare payment now
becoming easy and secure. Even locals will access the app for
their daily commute. Finally, GoaMiles will help drivers to
acquire more customers by operating and partnering with
existing taxi companies.
esteemed passengers. Value and
entertainment have now been added to
the flying experience with the launch of
this service.
The free service provides users
content. “What makes this unique
entertainment experience remarkable is
that this is a first-of-a-kind facility in the
domestic airspace especially by a low
Chairman & Managing Director,
Flyers can now easily access
SpicEngage on their hand-held devices
In the last step, a registration form
will have to be filled and submitted. The
SPICENGAGE
In-flight entertainment has come a
long way from its movie projector days in
the forties. The broad IFE nomenclature
now covers audio and video
entertainment, personal televisions,
in-flight movies and in-flight games
(some even allow passengers on a
particular flight to play with one
another). Till recently, most airlines
offered personal TV screens. But now
the trend is veering towards pushing
content onto hand-held devices carried
SpiceJet is eschewing the traditional
seat-back screens. This has a dual
advantage. There are substantial cost
savings in doing away with the screens
as well as their cabling. In addition, the
reduced weight of these two pieces of
equipment leads to lesser fuel costs.
Aircraft offering SpicEngage will be
the aircraft is on the ground rapid
RANBIR KAPOOR ON SANJU, THE
Ten years and 14 films
after his towel-dropping
debut, the grandson of
Raj Kapoor and the son
of Rishi Kapoor and
Neetu Singh is candid enough to admit
that both, box office success and
memorable cinema, are fickle and that
“fortunes change”. Ranbir Kapoor, fresh
from the release of Sanju, said a few days
before the release of the film that it had
been “as taxing as it had been enjoyable”
before adding “I’m not as successful as I
was a few years ago. Sometimes when
you’re doing well, you just expect the sun
to keep on shining on you, but it doesn’t.”
Here are excerpts from an interview
conducted a little before the film’s
release.
What does Sanju mean to you?
A tremendous opportunity — working
with Rajkumar Hirani and his team,
portraying Sanjay Dutt. It is a part that I
am really thankful, stoked, lucky and yet
nervous about. Sanjay Dutt is a very
special man in my life. When Raju Sir
told me about this film, I didn’t have the
confidence because I thought I wouldn’t
be able to do it. I don’t have the courage,
don’t have the understanding or the
acting chops to do it. This is not an acting
gig for me. I haven’t tried to show good
acting, bad acting or showcase my talent.
I think it was just the opportunity to be
part of a story of a person who I consider
to be my icon. Apart from being a fan, I
really respect him. I am happy that after
seeing the trailer, they (the audience)
seem to have accepted me as Sanjay Dutt,
hopefully that feeling will prevail when
they see the film.
But you did not think so when Raju Hirani
first called you, right?
(Laughs) Yes! I tried all that I could to
say no to him. I told him anything else
but please don’t offer me the role of
also very
So I told the
similar boots for
are specific bootcut
has a ‘Sanjay Dutt’ style. Certain things
do help you to get into the skin of the
character, but more than that, you have
to understand the heart and the mind of
a character. Superficially, people will
like one or two scenes, but it is ultimately
the nature of the character that people
connect to.
Personally for me, the voice - what you did
with how Sanjay Dutt talks - was
incredible! How did that happen?
Initially when we were shooting I was
apprehensive about it and shared it with
FOOD
SAGE
EACH SPICEJET AIRCRAFT HAS BEEN NAMED AFTER
A PARTICULAR SPICE. IN THIS ISSUE WE TALK ABOUT
THE BENEFITS AND USAGE OF SAGE
BEYOND THE
STUFFING
SAGE ISN’T USUALLY SEEN IN MANY
PREPARATIONS. BUT THAT HASN’T
STOPPED THE ANCIENT ANTIDOTE
FROM BEING A CELEBRATED SPICE IN
MANY FOOD CULTURES.
BY MADHULIKA DASH
Mashed potatoes with butter and sage
PERHAPS THE MOST AROMATIC and
powerful tastemaker of the herb-spice
world, sage is the only spice that ruled
the Middle Ages not only as an effective
antidote that could cure everything from
bad breath odours to serious wounds, but
also dominated the communist political
space. How else does one explain the
prominent position that this ancient,
cure-all herb enjoyed in Confucius
cuisine? The herb features as the key
flavourant in many dishes in what today
is called the food that created the idea of
Communism.
In fact, if folklore is anything to
benchmark the popularity of sage in the
political arena, then the appreciation of
sage was a pre-requisite back in the days
to be invited to the table of the great
political thinker. But Confucius wasn’t
the only one who seemed to be fanboyed
by the wonder herb. Cleopatra and Greek
physician-herbalist Pedanius
Dioscorides too regarded sage as
supreme, and called it the “saviour sage”.
In fact, such was the faith on sage’s
healing prowess that for Henry VIII,
sage and rosemary became the two
sacrosanct herbs in the kitchen – and
cooks would rally to figure ways to sneak
in sage goodness in his daily feast, be it in
the porridge, duck, or even in the court
special orange pudding.
Interestingly however, for a herb that
was literally at the bottom of creation of a
political thought school, within a turn of
the century had reduced from being a
living essential to a “celebratory herb”
that was used occasionally, much like its
brethren rosemary.
What led to the sudden change of
fortune? “Sage’s powerful character,”
says Chef Sabyasachi Gorai (Chef-owner,
Fabrica By Saby). “The thing about sage
is that it is more of a solo player, and
responds to cooking techniques much
differently than most of the spices and
herbs, even in the mint family to which it
belongs. So pairing it with spices needs a
generous experience working with sage
and yet can be a task difficult task.”
Agrees Chef Paul Kinny (Culinary
Director, Bellona Hospitality), who has
worked with sage to create his retinue of
minimalistic menus. “Sage on its own is a
wonderful spice to work around with. It
is sturdy, can be cooked along with meat
and others and performs beautifully
FOOD
SAGE
when you have to create a sophisticated
dish that has these assertive layers of
interesting flavours without the use of
other flavourants.” One of the finest
example of this is of course is the soufflé
and savoury panna cotta where sage is
used to give that distinct sweet aroma
and taste to the dessert.
Chef Sharad Dewan (Regional
Director, Food Production, The Park,
Kolkata) , who has worked with sage
sporadically, seconds Chef Kinny’s
perception of this perennial herb.
“Sage is a difficult herb to
understand, but is an absolute delight to
work with once you figure out how to
extract and manipulate the flavour
profile using different cooking
techniques to your advantage. Like
cooking sage gives it this interesting
crispness, which can be paired using the
same principle as one would do while
using sturdy greens like methi, poi saag
or radish leaves.”
Sage's sweetness in fact is one of the
interesting facets that have nudged chefs
into rediscovering this ancient herb,
which is unpleasantly pungent (think
bitter) to taste in its natural fresh state.
For Chef Harangad Singh, sage works
brilliantly with tubers. “A few leaves of
sage cooked in oil can add that sweet
smell and elevate a simple, stir fried
potato or elephant yam dish to another
level.”
Add it to butter or oil, says Chef
Deepak Dange (Executive Chef,
Intercontinental Marine Drive), “and it
becomes an interesting sauce to be
poured over a steamed or oven baked fish
and seafood dish. In fact, sage-aroma
sauces are the oldest trick in the book to
get any kind of unpleasant smell off a
dish and can be a brilliant kitchen hack
when it comes to elevating a mundane
dish."
This, says Chef Gorai, “gives sage, an
otherwise solo player, its versatility. You
can use it in any produce that is either
neutral in its flavour profile or has a
sweet undertone, much like meat, fish
and some meaty veggies.”
Sage's, adds Chef Kinny, “ability to
add that sweet aroma and that sweetbitter
taste is what makes it a brilliant
dessert herb too, especially when the
ones that use savoury ingredients.”
But sage's “culinary rediscovery”
isn’t just limited to its ability to add a
sweet aroma, taste or masque unpleasant
smells (especially those in meat, fish and
egg). It in fact among the handful of
herbs that can actually stand the heat
and can be used for smoking as well.
Chef Dewan, who has extensively
worked with sage considered smoking as
one of the most “radical” ways to get the
best of sage into a dish — be it a sage
smoked poached egg, give that extra
punch to a slow cooked and chargrilled
pork shoulder served with caramalised
onions and greens or even the traditional
trifle custard.
A good example of this is Chef
Dange’s Braised Basa which uses sage
butter to bring forth the flavour of the
sweet basa with the micro greens playing
the bitter balancer. In fact, smoked Sage
or even hand rolled, warm sage works
beautifully with cheese as well.
UNFORTUNATELY, EDUCATION AND
WEALTH could be barriers to the
spiritual process for lots of people, not
because there is something wrong
with education and money, it is just
the way you relate to them. If your
whole sense of who you are has come
to you only from your qualifications
or your bank balance, then yes — both
education and money are a barrier not
only for your spiritual growth, but
also for your physical and mental
wellbeing. If you have just seen them
as a means or as tools for access, then
there is no problem. They are in no
way a barrier. In fact, they can be very
useful because they leave your life
free in many ways; they bring so much
understanding and so many
possibilities.
Fundamentally, education is to
cultivate your mind, to constantly
imbibe new possibilities. Education is
a possibility which opens you up to
new possibilities to the world outside.
The purpose of wealth or money is
also the same. If you have money or
wealth, it can open up many
possibilities within you and in the
world around you. If you have money,
if you wish, on a certain day you do
not have to go and work; you can just
sit and meditate. However, if your
condition is such that you have to
work for that day’s meal every day,
that possibility is closed. Even if you
wish to meditate, your hunger will
take you out on the street.
So, can education and wealth
become a barrier for new
possibilities? Yes. For that matter,
anything can become a barrier:
education, wealth, power, fame,
position. But anything can become a
means of access also. So it is not
education or wealth which can close
or open you, it is how you relate
yourself to them.
MOSAIC MAGIC
SISTERS AASHIKA AND TANISHAA CUNHA
ARE CREATING STUNNING MOSAIC
ARTWORK FOR SOME OF THE MOST
ILLUSTRIOUS FAMILIES IN INDIA AND
ABROAD. BY PALLAVI MEHRA
The art of mosaic was
founded in 3rd century
BC in Mesopotamia
(present-day Iraq and
parts of Iran, Syria and
Turkey). Thereafter, it spread to Rome
and Greece, and later flourished under
the Byzantine Empire. Two Mumbaibased
sisters, Aashika and Tanishaa, on a
vacation in Spain, chanced upon the art of
mosaic. They visited Park Güell in
Barcelona, and were inspired by artist
Antoni Gaudi’s architectural
masterpieces.
80
JULY 2018

ART
CRAFT
They now create commissions for
some of the most prominent families in
India and abroad. They use vibrant handcut
vitreous tiles to add texture and
vitality to their designs. “The ancient
mosaics found in Park Güell and the
churches and basilicas of France, Spain,
Italy and St. Petersburg, Russia have
deeply motivated us,” says Tanishaa of
their inspiration.
The sisters founded A & T Cunha
Mosaic to create beautiful mosaic pieces
that are displayed as works of art. The
girls haven’t had any formal training and
everything they know about mosaic was
self-taught on the job. They learned the
techniques and methods through trial
and error and their design aesthetic
comes naturally. Aashika works at the
Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation at
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu
Sangrahalaya (formerly the Prince of
Wales Museum) in Mumbai and has
completed her Bachelor’s degree in Fine
Arts, from Lasalle College of the Arts,
Singapore. Tanishaa has recently
completed her Bachelor’s degree in
Design from Goldsmiths College, London.
Aashika and Tanishaa started A & T
Cunha Mosaic in early 2015 and have
completed over 80 mosaics since then.
Typically, a client gives them a reference
or theme to work with. They first design
the work digitally and get an approval.
They then draw out the design on a
cement board, after which they start
working on the actual mosaic. The tiles
are then imported from Italy, handwashed
and hand-cut individually.
Photos of the work in progress are shared
with the client at every stage of the
elaborate process.
Their prized work, amongst many
national and international projects, is a
252 sq ft mosaic mural titled Ke Aloha O
Ka 'Aina (Love Of The Land) located at
the Ala Moana Center in Honolulu,
Hawaii. This mosaic depicts Hawaii’s
diverse flora and fauna. This piece was
particularly challenging for the sisters —
they completed it in 32 separate parts in
Mumbai which were then shipped to
Hawaii. Since the artwork had so many
separate parts, continuity between the
pieces had to be perfect.
Additionally, they recently created
two mosaics in Abu Dhabi. The works are
portraits of Al Sheikh Zayed — Father of
the UAE. The Aldar family commissioned
the mosaics as a public initiative in
collaboration with Make A Wish
Foundation. The total area of the two
mosaics is 120 sq. ft. and they are
mosaic depicting mangroves, which was
commissioned as a part of the Times
Celebrate Bandra Festival of 2015 and is
permanently displayed at Carter Road,
Mumbai. Moreover, their noninstitutional
popular mosaic designs
include maps, portraits, flowers, birds and
animals.
According to the sisters, mosaics of
portraits are the hardest to create.
“Getting the features, skin tone and
characteristics of a person is tough. Also,
people are extremely fussy. They want
themselves to look slimmer and fairer!”
says Aashika. Besides, editing mosaic
works is not easy. Unlike paintings, the
girls can’t change the mosaics with a
stroke of paint. They have to remove the
tiles from the board with a knife, smoothen
the board again and re-attach the new
tiles. Also, this process is physically
gruelling and arduous.
Every artwork is bespoke and the
mosaics are not machine-made, so no two
pieces are the same. “Mosaic has been
around for ages, but our aesthetic, the
hand-cut tiles and the texture of our works
sets us apart. Also, our clients love the fact
that we do not grout (fill crevices) our
works with the traditional white cement,
and that we play with the textures of the
tiles rather than using them as flat tiles,”
says Tanishaa of what makes their works
special.
The response to A & T Cunha Mosaic
has been exceptional. Remarkably, most of
their orders have come via word-of-mouth
or through social media. People have
heard about them through friends or
through Instagram and called them
directly to commission a work. The prices
of their works range upwards of Rs. 10,000
per sq. ft. and the final price depends on
the intricacy of the work and the type of
tiles used. For instance, metallic tiles and
mother-of-pearl tiles are more expensive
and portraits are priced higher than
sceneries or other subjects.
These talented sisters have more orders
in the pipeline, including an international
project. Tanishaa warns that mosaic is not
for everyone, “It’s painstaking, we have to
manage glass.” Aashika adds, “Mosaic is
physically exhausting, strenuous and
back-breaking! We often have lacerations
on our fingers as the tiles are sharp.”
Located on the banks of the
major city in Uttar
Pradesh, India’s largest
state (by population).
Spread over an area of more of than 400
sq. km., it is deeply steeped in history.
Believed to have been founded by a king
of the erstwhile state of Sachendi,
Kanpur was originally known as
Kanhpur and later, during British
occupation, as Cawnpore. Kanpur was
only a village when it and the
surrounding territory were acquired in
signing a treaty with Nawab Saadat Ali
Khan of Awadh and made it the
headquarters of a large Indian garrison.
Kanpur soon became a prime military
base of the British. The town was one of
the focal points during the early stages of
the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Since then,
the importance of Kanpur has been on
the rise.
As one of North India’s major
industrial centres, Kanpur has its own
historical, religious and commercial
importance. Its location alongside the
Ganges makes it especially fertile. This
so on. The city
attracts tourists
for its age-old
monuments and
varied other
constructions,
which reflect the
history of the
place. For the
spiritually
inclined, Shri Radha Krishna
Temple (Popularly known as JK
Temple), is a wonderful piece of
architecture made of white marble. It is
also known as the Glass Temple because
it has some unusual glass statues. The
murals on the temple walls inside
depicting scenes from Mahabharat and
Puranas are also noteworthy. The
illuminated towers of the temple can be
seen from quite a distance at night. This
temple is referred to by locals as
‘Kanpur’s answer to the Taj Mahal’ and
is best visited on a full-moon night.
The All Souls’ Memorial Church,
completed in 1875, has tragic reminders
of the mutiny of 1857, but is also one of
the oldest churches of the region. The
Jama Masjid, in the heart of city near
Nana Rao Park, is the biggest and most
popular mosque of Kanpur. A sense of
serenity and peacefulness prevails in
Gurdwara Banno Sahib that houses a
350-year-old manuscript of Guru Granth
Sahib.
The Allen Forest Zoo, that was once a
natural habitat for fauna, is one of the
very few zoos which were carved out of
natural forest area. The Ganga Barrage,
or the Luv Kush Barrage, is a dam built
across the Ganges near Old Kanpur and
has a boating club that is especially
wonderful to visit to see gorgeous views
of the sunset. The Gautam Buddha Park
is a fairly recent addition to Kanpur.
Located between the Bara Imambara
and the Martyrs Memorial, the park has
several rides that are a big draw for
children. The Moti Jheel Park is built
around a drinking water reservoir of the
Kanpur Waterworks. Located in the
beautiful Benajhabar area of the city of
Kanpur, the park is a popular destination
for morning and evening walks.
For history aficionados, the Nana
Rao Park, that was the site of the
Cawnpore massacre during the Indian
Mutiny/War of Independence/Rebellion
of 1857 is a must-visit. Tantya Tope’s
statue in the park, even though derelict
and in need of attention, does invoke a
sense of pride.
Massacre Ghat in Kanpur has
become extremely significant in history
since the Revolt of 1857, which is also
popularly referred to as the Sepoy
Mutiny of 1857 or the first war of Indian
Independence. Said to trigger off the
first war of Independence in India, on
June 27, 1857, Kanpur witnessed one of
the darkest events of all times.
As many as three hundred British
men, women and children were
butchered at the in Kanpur. Those who
were later killed at what came to be
known as the Bibighur Massacre. The
Ghat was renamed as Nana Rao Ghat as
the rebellion was believed to have been
led by Nana Sahib Peshwa. This Sati
Chaura Ghat later got recognized as
Massacre Ghat. Today the Massacre
Ghat stands to tell the tragic story to
those who visit it. A temple stands at the
site and reveals a darker and lesser
known side of the history of Indian
Independence.
Kanpur Sanghrahalaya, a museum
established by the British, is a treasure
trove of memorabilia and is an ode to
time gone by. The mound of Jajmau in
Kanpur is the sight of excavations
carried out in 1957-58 that led to the
discovery of several antique items
belonging to the period between 600
A.D. and 1600 A.D.
All these items have revealed a
strong influence of the Vedic period and
of times beyond that. Historians came up
with the conclusion that the items were
of the time of a Pauranic king who is said
to have ruled the kingdom of Yayati and
was known for his bravery and
intelligence. Jajmau was also known by
the name of Siddhapuri in ancient times.
Some historians have also arrived at the
conclusion that a fort of the king,
overlooking the Ganges was situated on
the high mound.
Today Jajmau houses the temples of
Siddhnath and Siddha Devi. It is because
of these names that Jajmau was
previously known as Siddhapuri.
Besides, there is also a mausoleum of
Makhdoom Shah Ala-ul-Haq.
Makhdoom Shah was a renowned Sufi
saint, who believed in the idea of
secularism and preached it all his life. In
the year 1358, Feroze Shah Tughlaq built
the tomb of Makhdoom Shah Ala-ul-
Haq.
Bithoor, about 25 km from Kanpur, is
a popular getaway. On the riverside of
the Ganges, it has mythological
significance as it is considered
to be the birthplace of Lord
Rama’s sons, Luv and Kush.
According to Hindu mythology,
just after creating the universe,
Lord Brahma performed the
Ashvamedha at Bithoor and
established a lingam there.
Another legendary site at
Bithoor is the Valmiki Ashram,
where the famous sage Valmiki
is supposed to have written the Sanskrit
epic, the Ramayana. A boat ride across
the river can be a gorgeous.
Kanpur is also considered to be a
super shopping destination. Leather is
the best thing to buy in Kanpur and on
Meston Raod (Bada Chauraha) you are
bound to get the best variety. Navghada,
General Gunj, Sisamau and Hatiya are
great for budget buys in local
handicrafts, bangles, trinkets, utensils
etc. However, the food in Kanpur is
definitely a draw. Kanpur is a great place
for chaat lovers - the city is packed with
chaat shops serving pani puri, aalu tikki,
dahi chaat etc.
The best time to visit Kanpur is from
October to March as the weather is
extremely pleasing which is perfect
for sightseeing and other tourist
activities.
Her spatial understanding combined with unique aesthetic
sense means her designs do more than look beautiful — they
fit perfectly with the lives of those who inhabit them. “I
like to work with my clients’ tastes so I do lots of different
styles. I really don’t have any design style. I love all things
simple and elegant; I am a great believer that interiors
shouldn’t look staged, which you often see nowadays. I
prefer the place to look loved and lived in, with its own
timeless personality and that little touch of the fantastic!”
says Ms. Hema.
HSAA offers a seamless turnkey service to clients
and investors, ensuring that every aspect of creation and
development is dealt with in synergy. Some of the firm’s
ongoing projects are a resort in Manali; hotels in Indore,
Bhopal and Dehradun; and residences and offices in Delhi.
The definition of luxury is very subjective and changes
with individuals and from city to city as well. The changing
needs with the changing geographical locations is also
a major deterrent in defining the services and ambience
required to suit the location. “When you look around our
work, you can immediately see the superior design and
luxury furniture and materials. Interior re-modeling and
around 20 per cent of healthcare
organizations will achieve productivity
Non Communicable Diseases
(NCDs) are rising at a tremendous rate
in India, now accounting for 53 per cent
of the disease burden and 60 per cent
of all deaths in India. “A smartphone
based diagnostic platform is even more
useful in rural areas as there are no labs
or facilities to take tests. Right now,
when samples are sent to larger cities,
reports come only two-three days later
and important time is lost to treat the
In accordance with the WHO
The buzzword is biosimilars and out
According to the Confederation
of Indian Industries (CII), medical
tourism in India is projected to be a
US$9 billion opportunity by 2020.
Currently, medical tourism industry
is pegged at US$3 billion. “Over the
period of last few years, India has
emerged as one of the leading nations
among the popular medical tourism
destinations. This is primarily because
of two major reasons – the affordable
cost of medical treatment and quality
of medical service and expertise
available at the top-notch hospitals
within that price range,” says Tapesh
Singhal, Director, LDG India. In terms
of technology, India is one of the most
advanced nations with all the startof-the-art
medical equipment. Take
an example, a cardiovascular surgery
in the United States costs around Rs.
80 lakh, whereas in India it is between
Rs. 4-5 lakh. “With Chennai, Bengaluru
and Hyderabad leading the medical
tourism market, south India is becoming
a hub for medical tourism for patients
from foreign lands. Kolkata, Mumbai
and Delhi are also following suit,”
says Swadeep Srivasatava, Managing
Partner and Chief Belief Officer of
IndiaVirtualHospital. According to
one estimate there are more than two
lakh patients travelling to India every
year for medical care. Dr. Shankar
Narang, Chief Operating Officer, Paras
Healthcare, says, “Patients come to us
for bypass surgeries, valve replacement
surgeries, knee replacements, hip
replacements, metabolic surgeries and
others. India is viewed as one of the key
destinations for medical tourism and
attracts patients from over 50 countries
worldwide.”
The old adage `You are what
you eat’ could never hold truer than
today. Lifestyle diseases are becoming
commonplace but healthy eating habits
are not as restrictive as many people
imagine. Mehar Rajput, Nutritionist,
Fitpass advices, “Get more of whole
grains – at least half your grains should
be whole grains such as barley, oats,
amaranth and quinoa. Limit refined
grains and added sugar and include
green, orange, red, yellow and purple
produce.”
After an overnight fast of about
eight hours, the first foods that go
into your body are major determining
factors of your health. Later, salads,
high in fiber, will quench your hunger
and keep problems like acidity
away. With zero calories and high
nutrient value, they will help you lose
excess weight too. Nutritionist Nikhil
Chaudhary adds, “According to research
seeds and nuts which provide healthy
fats, are the only foods which have
clearly shown to increase in lifespan.
Make seeds like chia, flax, walnuts,
almonds, sunflower, pumpkin, coconut
and sesame all a part of your daily diet.”
Most of the health problems like
High Cholesterol, type 2 Diabetes
and Fatty Liver can be resolved by
proper diet and lifestyle changes. The
important thing is to understand that
nutrition is not rocket science but is to
get to the basics and roots of simple
cooking. “Eat every two hours and
even if you cannot eat ever so often
then consume healthy drinks. It helps
sustain energy through the day. Do
not skip meals as this would lead to
muscle breakdown and loss and hence
compromise immunity. Eat lean protein
thrice a day as it helps to maintain
body tone. Consume three litres of
water daily. Exercise regularly with a
balance of weight training and cardio.
Eat fruits in the first half of the day and
always carry nuts like almonds plus
walnuts and unsalted peanuts,” advices
nutritionist Karishma Chawla of
Eat Rite 24x7.
NOT JUST GET YOU UP CLOSE
FOOD, ART AND MORE.
BY BINDU GOPAL RAO
Located a mere 130 km from
Bengaluru, reaching Mysore
involves a little less than
three hours drive on a wellmaintained
highway dotted
with a plethora of restaurants and
sights that make for a pleasant drive.
Having being ruled by the Wodeyar
dynasty for over 500 years, Mysore is a
city with a royal history. At the heart of
the city is the beautiful Mysore Palace
or the Amba Vilas Palace that is easily
the most visited place here. Incidentally,
the Mysore Palace has as many footfalls
if not more than the Taj Mahal every
year which is a small testament of its
immense popularity.
The palace itself is a majestic
structure built in Indo-Saracenic
architectural style and was designed
by Henry Irwin, a well-known English
architect. The construction of the
palace was started in 1897 and it took
15 years to build this three-storied
Panoramic view of Mysore city from Chamundi Hills
structure. Many parts of the palace
are open to public and you can walk
through history when you are here. This
palace has several exhibits including
the famous golden statue of Chamundi
that is paraded on an elephant as part
of the annual Dasara celebrations.
Photography however is not permitted
inside the palace.
While you are here however make
sure that you look around – especially
the ceilings, floor and walls that have
intricate art work in deep colours that
is sure to take your breath away. The
Durbar Hall with its beautifully sculpted
pillars and the Kalyana Mantapa with
a dome-shaped ceiling, stained glass
work and patterned flooring are a
must-see while you are here. The palace
is lit during public holidays as well as
during the Dasara period and makes for
a stunning visual sight at that time.
The other place that must be on
your itinerary is the Jaganmohan Palace
THIS
AND THAT
Mysore is well known for
many things and interestingly
all of them are prefixed with the
name of the city. So whether it
is Mysore Pak, Mysore Bonda,
Mysore Masala Dosa or the
Mysore Peta – this is where they
all originated
A good way to see the city is to
enroll for a walking tour. There
are a variety of tours on offer
including heritage walks, food
walks, artisan walks, colonial
walks and old city walks
Located in the vicinity of
Mysore is the heritage town of
Srirangapatna that has Tipu
Sultan’s palace, Ranganatha
Swamy temple and also the
famed Rangantittu Bird
Sanctuary
Cycling tours are also
available and can be organized
with prior appointment
that dates back to 1861. It has now
been converted into an art gallery and
houses one of the largest collections
in South India. The erstwhile residence
of the rulers, this beautiful palace
houses some of the best collections
of renowned artist Raja Ravi Verma.
Interestingly some of the palaces have
been converted into hotels including
the Lalith Mahal Palace and the
Chittaranjan Palace which was originally
built for Mysore’s princesses.
There are also several heritage
buildings in the city like the
Cheluvamba Vilas Palace, Jayalakshmi
Vilas Palace, Crawford Hall (now a part
of Mysore University), Oriental Research
Institute Mysore, Marimallappa’s
High School, Hardwick High School,
Mysore Medical College, Town Hall
and Krishnarajendra Hospital, among
many others, that date back to many
decades. In fact walking around the city
is the best way to see the architecture
of the bygone days.
When you are in Mysore a visit to
the Chamundi Hills is a must. The drive
up to the hill is scenic and through a
reserve forest that is also home to a
family of leopards. The temple itself
is the presiding deity of Mysore and
is dedicated to Chamundi or Goddess
Durga and dates back over 1000 years.
The temple is almost always crowded
which means you must be prepared
Philomena Cahtedral
for long queues before catching a
glimpse of the beautiful statue inside.
Being located on a hill, this place is
surrounded by lush green landscapes
and also gives you a ringside view of
the city of Mysore. A larger than life
statue of Mahishasura, the demon who
Chamundi killed after a nine day fight –
coinciding with the modern day Dasara
festivities - is seen outside the temple
here.
For more spiritual fill, head to the
beautiful grey-toned Saint Philomena
Cathedral built in Neo-Gothic style
whose twin spires are 175 feet tall
and can be seen from a distance. The
large hall inside has a capacity of 800
people and the interiors have beautiful
stained glass windows that reflect many
important scenes from the life and
times of Jesus Christ.
The Brindavan Gardens, spread over
60 acres and located about 24 km away
from the city is a must-visit for its well
laid out terrace gardens and symmetric
design. It adjoins the famed Krishnaraja
Sagar dam site which is a primary water
source to the city. A popular shooting
venue for many Bollywood productions
the movement of the water from the
fountains is synchronized with music.
A huge draw, the show draws large
crowds at all times especially during
Another must-visit is the
Mysore Zoo officially called the Sri
Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens.
Spread over 157 acres, it is one of the
oldest zoos in the country and dates
back to 1892. Apart from being home
to a large number of animals, reptiles,
birds and mammals, the zoo has many
activities that involves citizens as well
which gives it an edge. You can also
adopt an animal here and be entitled
to free complimentary passes for
entry into the zoo. A small store is also
available in-house where you can pick
up interesting souvenirs for friends
and family. Electrical buggy cars are
also available at the zoo - an easy
way to get around the premises. Also
managed by the zoo is the Karanji Lake,
a paradise for bird lovers set amidst
a beautiful landscape. If you are here
in the morning you can spot several
species of birds including varieties of
pelicans, sunbirds, bulbuls, cormorants
and more. Incidentally the country’s
biggest aviary is also here and there
is also a bird watch tower, nursery
premises.
Mysore is known as the home of
also has a section for vegetables,
coconuts, banana leaves, fruits and
small knick-knacks. Walking through
the crowded alleys is an experience in
itself and must not be missed.
Mysore is also home to soapstone
carvers and there are a few fifth
generation artisans who continue
with this craft and create beautiful
sculptures. Likewise, the inlay rose
wood art is unique to this place and
the art work created has pieces of
ivory and bone and is manifested in
artefacts and furniture. Being known
for sandal oil and allied products a
visit to the Government Sandal Oil
factory established in 1917 will give
you an insight into the processing of
sandalwood when the factory was
processing the wood to the oil including
boiling, distillation and condensation.
You can also buy products from the
Mysore Sandal Factory including soaps,
incense sticks, perfumes and cosmetics.
Another place that must be on your
itinerary in Mysore is the Government
Silk Weaving Factory known for its
popular Mysore silk sarees. What makes
these sarees different is the use of
pure silver strands in the zari that also
adds to its cost and gives it a unique
process from silk worm cocoons to
the final product. In fact if you want to
When in Mysore you must ensure to
SPOTLIGHT REAL ESTATE
WHEN
SAFETY IS
THE KEY
IT IS ESSENTIAL TO KNOW
ABOUT FIRE SAFETY AND THE
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN
IN CASE OF FIRE IN HIGH RISE
BUILDINGS. BY RAMAN SAPRU
FIRE PREPAREDNESS
and a prevention
programme are key
towards saving lives and
minimising injury and
damages to property
Raman Sapru
in case of a fire. One
of the key aspects of fire prevention
and preparedness are regular fire
inspections which unfortunately take
a back seat in maximum societies in
Mumbai. Understanding and keeping
safety aspect as their first responsibility,
good builders do not cut corners in
(FLS) Fire Life Systems design and
installation.
Any high-rise residential building
must incorporate the following key
points (but not limited to) in systems
design and that are to be maintained
as per the frequency and procedures
outlined in NFPA standards. Let us
take the examples of two Mumbai high
rises (each above 50 floors), Omkar
1973 Worli and Omkar Alta Monte
Malad, where the following have been
incorporated:
The building is fully equipped with
sprinklers and charged at all times with
supervisory controls to integrate with
Building Management Systems to have
real-time monitoring of system health.
Pressurised lift lobbies and exit
staircases.
Fully functional fire alarm and public
address system.
Fire lifts.
Alternate DG supply for fire lift safety
systems.
FRLS wires for house wiring.
Appropriate fire water reservoirs
and levels are maintained and there is
provision for additional water bodies in
the compound like swimming pools and
fountains.
As per world statistics most building
fires are caused by electrical short
circuits and overheated undersize neutral
wires. Proper A short-circuits study
analysis of an electrical distribution
system is carried out at regular intervals
to determine the magnitude of the
currents that flow during an electrical
fault. Comparing these calculated values
against the equipment ratings is the first
step to ensuring that the power system
is safely protected and cascade effect is
not carried into the system causing fires
due to short circuits.
Fire loads for finishing material is
reduced by using more sustainable
natural native material like stone
cladding instead of untreated wall
veneers.
Properly lit exit signages and escape
routes with battery backups.
Directional sounders guiding tenants
to reach exit staircases in case of smokefilled
corridors.
CCTV cameras integrated with
Incident Commander Screen in the Fire
Control Room for the Fire Officer to have
real-time visuals of the affected floors
before proceeding to the location of the
incident.
Carrying out fire inspections is by
no means a glamorous job, but it is one
that is essential in fire preparedness
committee comprising of Facility team
and appointed Fire Marshalls from
KERALA JUST GOT BETTER
BOLGATTY, THE FIRST GRAND
HYATT IN SOUTH INDIA.
BY BINDU GOPAL RAO
SpiceJet flies to Kochi. Log on
to www.spicejet.com for details
Bolgatty Island in
Ernakulam district of
Kerala is a small oasis
that you can reach
crossing over a bridge.
Home to India’s only international
marina, the island is a great way to
explore the sounds and sights of Kochi.
Now, 26 acres are occupied by the Grand
Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty, a waterfront
urban resort that overlooks the
backwaters of the beautiful Vembanad
Lake.
The first thing that struck me here
was the expansive space and how it has
been personalized with bold and
compelling works of art. Perhaps an ode
to Kochi that is so renowned for its art
and cultural heritage, the lobby is done
up in gold and beige tones. The large
light fixtures, over the top chairs and
textured seating make for a stunning
first impression. Add the view of the lake
on one side and the city hugged by
swaying coconut palms on the other and
you know this property is different.
Incidentally this happens to be the hotel
with the largest number of keys in
Kerala and is next to the 1744 Bolgatty
Palace, one of the oldest existing Dutch
palaces in the country. The eclectic art
forms throughout the hotel add a touch
of class here.
The hotel has a total of 264 rooms
with 38 suites and four villas. All the
rooms come with complimentary Wi-Fi,
access to the 24 hour fitness centre and
pool. The standard rooms come with an
option of a king bed or two twin beds and
have a view of the Marine Drive. Spread
over 41 square metres of space, the room
has an attached walk-in shower and
bathtub. Equipped with swanky 49”
Smart IPTV, air conditioning control
and more, this is where smart
automation technology is seen whether
it is in the sensor based lighting, motion
sensors to control curtains or tapping
the door to enter inside.
Some rooms also have outstanding
views of the sprawling backwaters of the
Vembanad Lake. The suites here are
expansive, ranging from 81 to 240
square metres and have separate living
room and come with a kitchenette or
terrace. The Grand Club Rooms are two
or three bedroom villas spread over 214-
287 square metres and also include perks
like two way airport transfers and are
equipped with a private kitchen and
dining area, separate living area, private
balcony overlooking the Vembanad lake,
library cum study room, private plunge
pool and more. And if you are looking for
uber luxury, the Presidential Suite with
its Middle Eastern theme redefines the
good life.
The restaurants and bars at Grand
Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty offer an array of
options to satisfy your gourmet senses.
The best part is that several eating
spaces come with a patio and al fresco
seating so you can enjoy lake views with
stunning sunsets while you nibble on
local delicacies. The coffee shop at the
lobby level is laid out like a lounge and
has private dining spaces by the
waterside. The Pool Bar adjacent to the
swimming pool is the place to chill with
a signature cocktail. The Colony
Clubhouse & Grill is a rooftop bar where
you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the
backwaters and Kochi’s skyline.
To sample some authentic Kerala
fare head to Malabar Café, a relaxed
restaurant that redefines the region’s
age-old, treasured recipes. Do try the
wheat pancake filled with minced
chicken called Kozhi Pathiri and the
Local Market Thali which has a
selection of local food served in steel
plate and bowls. The Grand Lobby
Lounge is available for some class of
rooms and is a plush place to chill. If you
want to try international flavours check
out the Thai Soul, a poolside restaurant
inspired by Bangkok’s street side where
Chef Suppatra's take on Thai street food
classics are a must. Do try the Pla rad
prik, a crispy fish fillet with chilli garlic,
green peppercorns and Num keang sai
made with shaved ice, Thai syrup and
tropical fruit compote.
Interestingly the hotel is suitable not
just for business travelers (well it also
has three helipads) but also families.
Health watchers can head to the
advanced Fitness Centre that is open 24
hours and is equipped with state-of-theart
latest cardio and strength-training
equipment and personal trainers who
are always ready to help. Else head out
for a morning yoga session at the
waterside lawns, enjoy a game of lawn
tennis, take a dip in the expansive pool
or around the landscaped gardens.
There is also a separate pool for children
and an indoor pool at the mezzanine
level. To relax and rejuvenate head to
Šãntata (meaning inner peace, harmony
and tranquility in Sanskrit) the in-house
spa that has both Western and
Ayurvedic therapies. Do try the
signature treatments that have been
developed in-house. Being in spice
country, the Spice Symphony uses a
curated blend of oil prepared in-house
combining many Indian spices.
The Arabian Sea Salt Ritual,
Absolute Aroma Therapy and Harmony
are other therapeutic treatments that
are unique to this spa. The Island
Gardens that envelope the resort will
thrill the nature lover in you. Kids can
pick fruits at the mango orchard in the
season or chase butterflies in the garden
that has cabanas to relax.
Or simply head to the reading garden
with a book or learn more about the
spices in the spice garden. A Waterside
Amphitheater on the lawns is the place
where dance, theatre, Carnatic music
recitals and traditional Kalarippayattu
and Kathakali arts are performed.
Children also have designated play areas
complete with interactive indoor and
outdoor activities with a sandpit,
multipurpose sports court and activity
room on site. With over 3,000 square
metres of space including a
grand ballroom and
meeting rooms, the hotel is
ideal for both weddings and
meetings. The Lulu
Bolgatty International
Convention Centre is
adjacent and has over 6,500
square metres of indoor
and 4,000 square metres of
outdoor spaces.
And since you are in the
culturally rich city of Kochi do make
time to soak in some local experiences
that are curated by the hotel and are
available at an additional cost. A visit to
Fort Kochi that still has a Dutch
hangover is the place to head for cafés,
museums, old churches and colonial
houses. Take a tuk-tuk tour with a local
expert while you stop at major
sightseeing places or visit the Elephant
Training Center Visit and go for a spice
walk with a naturalist. My personal
favourite however was a visit to the
fishing village of Kumbalangi where you
can see the Chinese fishing nets on the
shores and also tour the village to come
up close with what village life is all
about. The hotel also organizes an
ancient spice market guided visit with
the Chef that will give you some great
insights into Malabar cuisine and its
aromatic ingredients.
2004 by Orkut
Buyukkokten, a
at Google. KPC
migrated to
Facebook in 2005.
Little did Qureshi
know his club
would soon grow
beyond all expectations.
Three years later, Sair Mir joined
KPC as an admin. The valley saw a boom
in photography hobbyists post 2010 and
each day around 30 images were being
shared by the members. Membership to
KPC was growing at a furious need and
there was an urgent need to maintain the
quality of the submissions. Three more
admins were therefore inducted to help
oversee the group’s activities - Sahran
Malik, Sajad Rafeeq and Basit Alvi.
The five now constitute the core
team that meets every day to discuss
`What’s next for KPC.’ The club now has
more than one lakh followers across
various social media. KPC, now a
registered company, provides a robust
platform for budding photographers to
showcase their talent. The aim of KPC is
to promote, empower, and facilitate
budding photographers, while enriching
them technically. The members
comprise photographers of various skill
levels, constituting the right blend of
youth and experience to promote
photography in Kashmir.
Facebook is the main channel for
interactions in KPC. Members post their
images in the group from where selected
images are showcased throughout social
media platforms. The group’s activities
range from mentoring to photowalks and
contests. The photowalks are conducted
locally as well as in other states for the
benefit of members; the latest was held in
Delhi last month. The weekly contest
“Theme of the Week” is a popular one
and keeps the community engaged in
various genres of photography. Apart
from these initiatives, the club is also
setting up relationships with various
leading organizations that can promote
work of its members.
Says core team member Sajad Rafeeq
(a frequent Spice Route contributor),
“We plan to come up with more ways and
means to promote photography. On the
cards are online tutorials and a
magazine, strengthening critique
forums, compiling and disseminating
information relating to photography, and
strengthening marketing channels for
members.” The ultimate vision is to
create a talented pool of artists, inspire
members to reach their potential and
strive to provide them a platform so that
they get global recognition.
There are big dreams, goals and
aspirations. But most important, there is
a will to achieve them all.
MONTAGE
DESTINATION WEDDING FOR MY DAUGHTER
BY SHYAMALI BASU (THE AUTHOR IS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT & HEAD - PRODUCTS & MARKETING,
HDFC ASSET MANAGEMENT CO. LTD.)
TODAY’S
GENERATION GO
TO GREAT LENGTHS
to achieve their
aspirations. Be it
travelling to exotic
locations, buying
an SUV, owning
the latest premium
mobile phone, etc.
A relatively new entrant to that list is
destination wedding, which comes with
one critical difference. There is only one
opportunity to meet this aspiration, at
least one hopes so, and when the time
comes, mostly there is no scope for
postponing. This aspect of criticality
requires one to be financially prepared in
order to avoid disappointments.
Wedding, in the Indian context,
is anyways an elaborate and more
importantly, an expensive affair,
irrespective of whether it is a destination
wedding or otherwise. Many people
in India start saving in gold for their
daughters' weddings. On every occasion
they accumulate more of the metal in
the form of either ornaments or coins.
This is done with a view of accumulating
her “Stree Dhan” over time so that the
parents don’t feel the pinch at the time of
the wedding. Gold is also favoured as it is
considered to be a safe investment option
which would never fail to deliver if things
go wrong.
While this is a prudent habit, I have
two points to make. The first is that
there are better ways to invest in gold
than physical gold purchase, in the form
of ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) or
Government of India’s Sovereign Gold
Bonds. There are no charges as paid by
investors at the time of buying or selling,
like in the case of physical gold. The
Government Gold Bond Scheme even pays
interest of 2.5% (payable semi-annually
on nominal value). There is no risk of theft
like in the case of physical gold.
The second point that I would want
you to consider is to think of equity as
a tool for wealth creation. The idea for
saving for a wedding is to use the corpus to
give your daughter a meaningful kitty and
spend wisely and to your heart’s content
for her wedding. Equity has historically
created wealth for people who believed in
the asset class.
If we just evaluate the S&P BSE
SENSEX - the index was conceived in
1979 and had a value of 32969 as on March
31, 2018. This simply means that had we
invested in the index (passively managed)
a sum of Rs 100 it would be Rs. 32,969 on
March 31, 2018. The investment would
have grown at the rate of 16% CAGR. At
times when we talk to our investors by
how much the money has multiplied –
they take time to spell out a number that
their capital would have multiplied 330
times. And this is when we are talking of
a passive investment in equities. Actively
managed equity mutual funds have
delivered higher returns over long time
periods. Finally, I would like to highlight
a behavioural aspect. When it comes to
gold, we don’t track daily movements. We
never panic and sell if the prices crash. On
the contrary, we buy more. This attitude
is optimum to have if you are an equity
investor.
If you have set aside the investment
for your daughter’s wedding, it is a
long term goal. Do let your investment
compound over time and not react
impulsively. The best way to accumulate
wealth in equity for your daughter is to
start a SIP when she is born and then on
every occasion (her birthday or festivals)
top it up with some more investment.
Time will fly and you will not even
realise when your daughter gets to the
marriageable age. A wedding typically sets
you back by a large part of your savings.
Building a corpus dedicated for the
purpose would remove worries at a later
date. A larger corpus would allow you to
go for a destination wedding, which would
be the icing on the cake.
TRAVEL
HEALTH
FLY HEALTHY, FLY HAPPY
MAKE THE RIGHT FOOD AND DRINK CHOICES WHEN
PLANNING A JOURNEY BY AIR. BY AARTI KAPUR
The only thing separating
many travellers from
their energy-sapping
work environment and
that longed-for annual
restorative vacation is the travel. But
they need to prepare well for the air
travel involved. “The pressure in an
airplane cabin at cruising altitude may
make passengers feel like they are at
about 8,000 feet, as though they were
high up in the mountains. And that can
be challenging for some people,” says
Avni Kaul, nutritionist and wellness
coach, founder of Nutri Activania,
certified diabetes educator from Project
Hope and International Diabetes
Federation.
Here are five tips that offer several
ways to can stay healthy at 35,000 feet.
1. HOW TO AVOID MUSCLE CRAMPS
Air travel of eight hours or more can
cause deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or
blood clots in some people. This risk
increases for people who have other risk
factors, such as obesity, cancer, varicose
veins, have undergone hormone
replacement therapies and have recently
had surgery. Even being over age 40 puts
you at a higher risk. The reason for this
increased risk is that the longer you are
immobile, the more likely blood clots can
form in the deep veins of your legs,
causing swelling and pain. There are
several ways to combat these risks:
‣ Extend your legs and flex your ankles
when possible.
‣ Get up to stretch your legs at least
every hour.
‣ Hold your knees to your chest for 10
intervals of 15 seconds each.
‣ Wear compression stockings.
“There have been several studies
that identify a risk of venous thrombosis
occurring in flights over eight hours that
range from 0–10 percent, with the
higher rates occurring among people
with risk factors such as a history of
prior blood clots, active cancer and
varicose veins,” says Dr Anurag Sharma,
an interventional cardiologist, adding,
“Some studies have demonstrated that
knee-high, graded elastic compression
stockings are effective in these higher
risk patients for preventing venous blood
clots during air travel.”
“However, the use of aspirin for
preventing venous blood clots in patients
participating in air travel is not backed
by any proven data points; in fact, aspirin
can be associated with significant
adverse side effects involving the
gastrointestinal tract,” advises
Dr Dheeraj Syal, a general health
practitioner.
The best remedy on an airplane for
leg cramps and restless legs syndrome is
activity. Request an aisle seat so that you
can stretch your legs into the aisle when
possible, but also so that you can get up
at least every hour. Try massaging your
TRAVEL
HEALTH
calf muscles and stretching at the back of
the plane. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as
they can increase dehydration and
cramping. You may want to carry a
plastic bag to make an icepack that you
can use on affected areas.
2. STAY HYDRATED
Our body is made up of approximately
60-70 per cent water and we need to
replenish this on a regular basis to stay
healthy. We lose our body water
routinely and therefore need to drink at
least seven-eight glasses of water every
day. This requirement for water
increases when we travel, especially
when we travel by air. Air travellers
experience physiological changes due to
increase in altitude, cabin pressure and
low humidity. The symptoms of
dehydration are many like dry mouth,
headache, thirst, constipation and
feeling light-headed. It may also result in
an increased heartbeat, confusion,
dry skin low blood pressure and fever.
However, adequate water intake may
prevent all of the above. Make a habit
of drinking as much water as you
possibly can at all times. Carry a
water bottle with you wherever you
go and refill it when it is empty to
avoid running out of water. Clean
drinking water is not available at all
places so buy bottled water whenever
in doubt.
Coconut water, fruits, juices and
smoothies are other more tempting
options to keep you hydrated while
travelling. They are healthy and bring
about change in taste. Dehydration is
known to cause headaches and can
actually prolong migraines.
Additionally, when your body is not
sufficiently hydrated, your nose will
begin to run to compensate. So have
plenty of water to compensate. Not
having enough water is not the only
reason you may feel dehydrated.
ODing on caffeine may also be a reason.
But the benefits of sipping water are
aplenty.
“Try to restrict your caffeine intake
as it dehydrates you. Keep the intake as
minimal as possible. Better to have
water throughout the flight. You will
feel much better and you won’t even
have cramps. The puffiness around the
eyes and bloating will be taken care off
as one tends to feel heavy after a flight
due to the air pressure,” says Avni Kaul.
Go easy on your alcohol intake, however,
when you are travelling by air as it adds
to dehydration.
3. EAT HEALTHY
While travelling, one tends to choose
junk food most of the time because that
is what is so usually temptingly
available. However, choosing wisely
energizes the traveller leading to a
positive state of mind. Keeping oneself
Avni Kaul
hydrated with plenty of water and eating
healthy food at regular intervals makes
one enjoy the leisure time more. It is
therefore very important to eat right
while travelling. According to Avni Kaul,
“Carry or buy roasted chana, roasted
makhana, almonds, walnuts, etc to snack
on during your flight. Avoid anything
fried like samosa, bread pakoda and
medu vada during the flight. Instead
order for Veg Upma, Veg Poha, Paneer
Grilled Sandwich, Idli, etc. An even
better option would be to pack some
fruits in the flight. Any seasonal fruit is a
good snack option.”
Eat at regular intervals and keep
your portions small so that you feel
energized and not sluggish or sleepy so
that you may enjoy the journey. Eating
plenty of protein is a good idea because it
keeps one alert and stabilizes the blood
sugar.
4. BYE BYE EARACHES
Changing cabin pressure alters
vibrations in the eardrum, which
causes pain. Deep breaths,
chewing gum or sucking on candy
can alleviate some of the pressure.
You also can try the Valsalva
Manoeuvre: Close your mouth and
pinch your nostrils together, then
blow gently. Repeat as needed,
especially during landing, to
equalize the pressure in your ears.
5. GO AWAY GERMS!
Use antibacterial wipes to
disinfect your seating area and get
your seasonal flu shot seven to 10
days before travelling to boost
your body’s immunity.
Enjoy your travels without
stressing too much but remember
to make healthy choices whenever
and wherever possible to
maximize your energy level
and pleasure.
TRAVEL TIPS TO BEAT THE
MONSOON BLUES
BY DIVYESH BHANDARI (WWW.IMBROGLIO-
PRODUCTIONS.ORG)
MONSOON TRAVEL FOR MANY CAN BE
QUITE TEDIOUS. Gloomy days, heavy
rains, flight delays, traffic jams and jet
lags often make the journey tiring. Here
are a few tips to help make your journey
smooth, enjoyable and stress free.
• Start packing in advance and finish
your monsoon shopping. Canvas or cloth
footwear can make travel difficult. Boots,
sandals, floaters or thick shoes work
best to commute on rainy roads to avoid
slipping.
• Remember to carry waterproof covers
for your electronics and valuables.
• Look up the weather at your destination
and carry umbrellas or raincoats
accordingly.
• Ensure you carry medicines, creams and
repellents to avoid
mosquito bites.
• Ask for window
seats and enjoy
the breathtaking
views of monsoon
from your flight
window.
• Carry your
favourite book or
Kindle to keep
yourself occupied
in case of flight
delays. Power banks and chargers are also
quite important to stay connected and
help you beat the rush at airport charging
booths.
• Sometimes moments of silence help
you gather all you need and prepare you
better for long journeys. Sit down and plan
your trip. Often what leads to hasty and
tiresome travel is the lack of composure
in our thoughts. Start by preparing a ‘To-
Do’ list and get things ready accordingly.
Talk to people who have travelled to
similar destinations so as to optimize your
vacation time.
• Keep back up options ready if you
plan on going for a family vacation that
includes outdoor activities.
• Carry light and synthetic clothes that
dry up fast and don’t cause dampness
when packed.
CRICKET
BANKING ON YOUTH AND EXUBERANCE
IT WILL BE EXCITING TO SEE INDIA AND ENGLAND LOCK HORNS IN WHAT PROMISES TO BE ANOTHER
FASCINATING CRICKET SERIES.BY MKM FAIYAZ AHMED
Virat Kohli will be hoping to extend his winning track record
The much-awaited series
between India and England
will commence from July 3,
2018 with India taking on
England in a three match T20I and ODI
series. Four years ago, when India
toured England, India won the first
bi-lateral series in England since 1990
under the leadership of former captain
MS Dhoni. India prevailed in the five
match series 3-1 on the back of some
mixed performances from the batsmen
and the bowlers. Shikar Dhawan, Suresh
Raina, Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra
Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane — all pitched
in with scores to seize crucial moments
when the team needed them.
India’s Captain Courageous Virat
Kohli will be hoping to extend his
winning track record against the topranked
England ODI side as India have
won four consecutive ODI series against
England since 2011. Kohli who missed
out an opportunity to play English
county for Surrey due to a neck injury
will be itching to play and score more
runs as he approaches a milestone of
10,000 ODI runs. Disappointingly, he
averages 26.29 in eight games he has
played against England in England with
just one half century and a highest score
of 55 at Riverside Ground in 2011. Kohli is
currently ranked number one ODI
batsman and is next followed by
England’s Joe Root by a huge difference
in points. It will be interesting to see who
England Cricket Board will pick against
India after the conclusion of the series
against Australia.
Presently, England is relishing the
limited overs success as they sit at
number one rank in One Day
Internationals. The likes of Jason Roy,
Johnny Bairstow, Jos Butler, Ben Stokes,
Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales, Sam Billings
and Chris Woakes make England a
dangerous side. Their bowlers might not
be complementing their power-packed
batting line up but David Willey, Chris
Woakes, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Liam
Plunkett and youngster Tom Curran
nevertheless make England an exciting
limited overs side. England’s ace
batsman Joe Root has been in
exceptional form since the last couple of
years but has not been able to convert
them into big scores.
SPORTS
CRICKET
The most impressive of all has
been Jonathan Bairstow ever since
he was promoted up the order.
Bairstow averages 66.23 and has
scored 1126 runs in just 22 innings
with his best of 141* against West
Indies in a successful run chase.
The return of Ben Stokes hasn’t
been sensational but he is one player
who can turn the game on its head
with both bat and ball. It will be
interesting to see if England will
persist with Moeen Ali who hasn’t
been impressive in recent times.
Both India and England usually
don’t make too many changes to
their ODI and T20I sides.
On the back of some impressive
performances from youngsters in
IPL and the domestic season, the
BCCI has added a mix of youth and
exuberance to the squad against
England. Ambati Rayudu’s sizzling
England’s ace batsman Joe Root has been in
exceptional form in the last couple of years
Hardik Pandya being regular
members in the playing eleven, it
will be very difficult for Siddarth
Kaul to promptly sneak a place into
the side.
Indian openers Rohit Sharma
and Shikar Dhawan have played key
roles in making India a quality ODI
side in last few years. They are more
likely to open the innings with KL
Rahul being the other alternative. It
will be interesting to see who will be
the first choice finisher for skipper
Virat Kohli in the series. Will it once
again be MS Dhoni or will someone
like Pandya, Karthik or Rayudu fill
the place left open due to Jadhav’s
injury?
It will be exciting to see the two
teams lock horns in what promises
to be another fascinating series.
after he was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad
for a whopping Rs. 11 crore. Pandey, who
had a promising start to his international
career and is a consistent performer at
the domestic level, hasn’t lived upto his
potential when it mattered. Also,
23-year-old Shreyas Iyer’s consistent
scores for Delhi Daredevils and Dinesh
Karthik’s emergence as a reliable
batsman in recent times have not been
disregarded by the selection committee.
One man’s gain is another man’s loss
and the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin
and Ravindra Jadeja have been once
again overlooked in One Day
Internationals and as well as in T20Is as
the trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra
Chahal and Washington Sunder
continue to impress across short formats.
Among the fast bowlers, Siddarth Kaul
has earned a call in ODIs as well as T20Is
after his consistent performances in
domestic cricket.
Kaul has all the qualities that a
bowler requires in short formats. He
swings, bowls yorkers, has different
slower deliveries and an effective
bouncer that can keep any batsman on
the toes all the way. But with Jasprit
THE MANY CHARMS OF LAKHNAVARAM LAKE
LOCATED IN GOVINDARAOPET MANDAL,
about 70 km away from Warangal,
Telangana, Lakhnavaram Lake is a
trending picnic spot. The lake, surrounded
by a thick deciduous forest, is spread
over an area of 10,000 acres and holds
about 2.135 tmcft of water and it irrigates
over 3,500 acres of land. The lake is an
exceptional thing of beauty as well as
historically significant. A fine example
of engineering excellence during the
Kakatiya reign, Laknavaram Lake is a
beautiful blend of history with nature.
The entire region seems bountiful with
green crops and pleasant water resources.
An added attraction to this mystic beauty
is the suspension bridge. The hanging
bridge takes you to the mini islands in the
lake. A total of about 13 tiny pieces of land
can be seen surrounded by lake water,
especially during the month of monsoon.
The authorities maintaining the lake also
provide boat riding facility which will take
you close to the most serene part of the
lake. The view during morning at sunrise
when the lake water shines as the rays fall
through the trees is absolutely stunning.
Haritha Lake View Resort at
SpiceJet recreates yoga
magic at 35,000 feet
SpiceJet crew being trained by Isha
Foundation instructors (above and left) and
SpiceJet staffers participate in a yoga session
at the airline’s Gurgaon head office
Having pioneered and successfully
executed the distinctive industry first
initiative of celebrating on-board yoga
for four consecutive years, SpiceJet
re-created the magic mid-air this
International Yoga Day yet again. On June
21, 2018, the global event saw SpiceJet in
partnership with Isha Foundation (isha.
sadhguru.org) constituting the unique
programme of “High on Yoga@35000
feet”. On the occasion, the airline’s crew
performed yoga asanas specifically
designed to be done on board flights.
SpiceJet crew members specially trained
by Isha Foundation performed a 10
minutes yoga session on board select
flights across the SpiceJet network.
Ajay Singh, CMD, SpiceJet, said, “Yoga
is not just an exercise but a unique and
powerful science that was gifted to the
world by India. Considering the stressful
life the current generation leads, yoga
has today become a necessity more than
ever. SpiceJet is known for its out-of-thebox
initiatives and we strive to offer the
best and the most engaging experiences
to our customers while on-board.”
The trained staff, part of the
operating crew, positioned themselves
at the first row and performed the
asanas. The asanas were conducted post
takeoff, after the seat belt signs had
been switched off, observing all safety
norms. The airline focused on two key
practices - the ‘Neck & Shoulder Practice’
and ‘Nadi Shuddhi’. While the former can
do wonders to relieve the stiff muscles
in the neck and shoulder region and
keeps the spine healthy and active, the
latter practice cleanses the nadis – the
pathways through which pranic energy
flows.
Spicejet also celebrated the day at
its head office in Gurgaon and at the
airport stations of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata,
Bangalore and Hyderabad. More than
100 staff members at each base from
different departments participated and
learnt yoga techniques. Each session,
lasting between 45 minutes and an hour,
involved yoga practices and asanas.
MY TOWN
Our ongoing series in which we look at various Indian cities through
the eyes of SpiceJet staffers. This month, Aman Singhal, C.S.E,
holds forth on Dehradun.
From above: The Mindrolling Monastery; the
sprawling Forest Resarch Institute; and
the scenic Sahastradhara
SpiceJet flies to Dehradun.
Log on to www.spicejet.com
for details
Connection to the city: I am
originally from Dehradun, the
city of fun.
Best thing about Dehradun:
At first glance it may appear
as a bustling hill station but
look closer and you will see
that Dehradun is steeped
in heritage and history. The
most random plans with
friends, families and relatives
are easily executable here.
The calm and serene town is
blessed with natural beauty,
gushing streams, deep ravines
and a lofty mountain range.
Dehradun has migrants
coming into the city from all
over. They are greeted with
immense warmth and affection
by the locals.
Favourite eating place: It
definitely has to be Kalsang
Restaurant with its many
delicious surprises, including fingerlicking
momos. Dehradun is a heaven for
foodies, especially momo lovers.
Local attractions: Lachhiwala is an
ideal picnic spot, surrounded by verdant
forests far away from the hustle and
bustle of city life. The Buddha temple
or Mindrolling Monastery is well-known
for its 103 feet tall statue of Lord
Buddha. Sahastradhara is famous for its
scenic beauty, waterfall and numerous
sparkling streams cascading down
limestone outcrops. You can admire
colonial style architecture at the Forest
Research Institute (F.R.I) which sprawls
over 2,000 acres of lavish vistas and lush
green fields.
Recommended places nearby:
Mussoorie, the Queen of the Hills, is only
35 km away. To its northeast are the
Himalayan snow ranges and to the south
the Doon valley and Shivalik range.
Those with a religious bent of mind can
visit Haridwar, the important pilgrimage
site, where river Ganga exits the
Himalayan foothills. Rishikesh, another
holy city nearby, is globally renowned as
a yoga and meditation centre.
Which are the other places where
you have stayed in India? How does
Dehradun compare to them?
I have stayed in Delhi, Mumbai and
Bengaluru. Dehradun is much better
in terms of climate. Living here gives
you multiple options within reachable
distance for good holidays. Also, there is
no place better than Dehradun when it
comes to street food. Finally, this is one
of the safest cities in India.
MEET THE LATEST DG CHAMPS!
HERE ARE THE LATEST WINNERS IN SPICEJET’S DG CHAMP PROGRAMME THAT HONOURS EMPLOYEES
WHO HAVE BEEN VIGILANT IN OFFLOADING UNDECLARED DANGEROUS GOODS
The annual DG Champ
programme at SpiceJet —
an initiative for encouraging
its staff to be more vigilant
while doing security checks/
screening and offloading dangerous
goods — is winning kudos from all over.
In the four quarters between January
and December 2017, 19 vigilant staffers
were rewarded as part of the incentive/
appreciation/recognition scheme.
According to DGCA rules 2003,
rule 11, reporting of any mis-declared,
undeclared, accident and incident
are mandatory. In order to encourage
them, SpiceJet has extended incentives
to all vigilant employees off-loading
dangerous goods on a regular basis.
The programme has helped employees
become more vigilant and has imbibed
the reporting culture within the
organization.
Each of the DG Champs goes home
with a gift box containing a Certificate
of excellence, a DG Champ
T shirt, a DG Champ cap and a DG
Champ badge.
ELEVEN GODS AND
A BILLION INDIANS
Boria Majumdar
Eleven Gods and a Billion
Indians takes you behind
the scenes of India’s most
popular sport — going
from early tours in 1886
to the more
contemporary IPL,
offering a complete
understanding of the
evolution of the game
both on and off the field.
Featuring material that
this book sheds new light
on cases like Monkeygate,
the suspension of Lalit
Weaving together
personal interviews,
Billion Indians unflichingly
asks the questions that
them: Has internal conflict
performance of the Indian
THE FORGOTTEN
CITIES OF DELHI
Rana Safvi
In The Forgotten Cities of
Delhi, book two of the
Where Stones Speak
trilogy covers historical
trails in Siri, Jahanpanah,
Tughlaqabad, Firozabad,
Din Panah, Shergarh and
Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.
In her trademark style,
Rana Safvi combines
narrative history with Sufi
couplets and takes you
on a walk across the first
city of Mehrauli and
Firozabad. This period
was a major step towards
integration of two distinct
cultures towards a culture
called Indo-Islamic by
many historians. In the
latter half of this volume,
she tells us stories from
an area and an era that’s
perhaps the richest in
Delhi’s archaeological
history — Shahjahanabad
and Firozabad on one
end, and Jahanpanah and
Siri on the other — a
stretch that’s today
dotted with tombs,
dargahs and the ruins of
the Purana Qila. This area
also houses the famous
Humayun’s Tomb and the
centre of Delhi’s spiritual
trail: the Hazrat
Nizamuddin Dargah. Rana
Safvi is a writer and
translator. She writes
about food and customs.
know that German
