It’s Spring! Well, nearly. After the recent snow apocalypse, you’d 

be forgiven for thinking that the warm weather will never come, 

but be assured, Spring is coiled, waiting to be sprung. 

This time of year is all about new beginnings and you’ll start to 

see new shoots of life appearing soon. With the warmer weather 

on the way (hopefully) you should be able to get outside and 

bathe in the new life starting to appear. If you’d like to share your 

pictures of the world around you with us, we’d love to see them.

keep you busy over the coming months and if you fancy seeing

PAPER TRAIL EXHIBITION 

Springtime Workshops for kids at St 

Andrews Museum 

The exhibition 

Tracing the local history of paper making in Fife, as well 

as its universal use in our daily life, Paper Trail explores 

the past, present and future of paper. From personal 

diaries and letters to rare books, which include the first 

edition of Euclid’s Elementa Geometriae and the Book 

of Scot Ballads by Robert Burns, the objects showcased 

will demonstrate the importance of the preservation and 

delivery of memories and knowledge. The exhibition also 

presents this humble material as a protagonist and aims 

at inspiring visitors by a range of selected artworks that 

will challenge common ideas of paper within sculpture, 

printmaking and collage. 

The workshops 

Throughout the duration of the display, Paper Trail: 

shaping our past, present and future is accompanied by a 

complementary programme of events. 

03 April, Marvellous Marbles (6 to 12 year olds) 

An afternoon of paper crafting and marbling. We 

encourage reusing and recycling materials, so please 

bring your own envelopes, paper and card along to 

marble. 

04 April, A Theatre of Shadows (6 to 12 year olds) 

A workshop where participants will create their own 

puppets and perform the story of paper together. 

11 April, From Paper to Kites (4 to 8 year olds) 

Draw, colour and shape your own simple kites, then take 

them home and test your flying skills. 

11 April, Colourful Koinobori (7 to 11 year olds) 

Make your own Japanese carp kites, known as Koinobori, 

to celebrate the Japanese spring tradition of wishing 

good luck.

Wear A Hat Day 2018 

Please get involved in Wear A Hat Day on Thursday 29th March 

2108 (or any day in March) to help raise funds for research into 

brain tumours. 

This devastating disease kills more children and adults under the 

age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on 

cancer research has been allocated to brain tumours. 

During Wear A Hat Day 2017, individuals, families, schools and 

other organisations all came together and raised over £300,000 

to fund our research. Together we can reach our target of 

£600,000 – enough to fund a team of researchers for a year.

FOSTER CARE FORTNIGHT! 

Every year, tens of thousands of children need foster care whilst they are unable to live with 

their own families. Fostering is a way that you can help children who desperately need support 

and somewhere to call home. It is rewarding for children and carers and can genuinely 

be a life changing experience for everyone. 

Foster Care Fortnight, led by fostering charity, The Fostering Network takes place from 14th – 27th May 

and aims to spread awareness of fostering in the UK. It highlights the work of foster carers round the 

country whose dedication, support and commitment make such a huge difference to so many children. 

There are a number of ways you can get involved. On social media you might consider including tags 

such as #ProudToSupportFostering or #proudtofoster on Twitter or Instagram. If you’re already a foster 

carer you can help spread the word and encourage others to become foster carers or perhaps make a 

short film showing why you’re proud to foster and share it!

Comedian and Children’s Author David 

Walliams named Judge of the 10th National 

Young Writers’ Awards! 

The National Young Writers’ Awards returns with a bang as children’s author David 

Walliams has been named judge for 2018! The competition, organised by tuition 

provider, Explore Learning, has inspired hundreds of thousands of children across 

the UK to put pen to paper and give writing a try. 

The theme for this year is ‘Heroes’ where children are tasked with writing a 500- 

word story about their hero. The winner will be surprised at a school assembly 

by David who will announce the National Young 

Writer of the Year and present them with a 

trophy, a trip to Disneyland Paris for their family 

and £500 of books for their school! 

The competition will run from 5th March to 29th April and 

is easy to enter. Children can pick up an entry form from 

their local Explore Learning or via explorelearning.co.uk/ 

youngwriters. 

David says: “It is a real privilege to be 

named judge for this year’s National 

Young Writers’ Awards and I am 

so looking forward to reading what 

the brilliant brains of our country’s 

children come up with.”

MEET THE MERMAIDS 

AT DEEP SEA WORLD 

Visitors can come face to face with a real-life mermaid over the Easter 

holidays at Deep Sea World. 

The North Queensferry attraction will be hosting special meet and 

greet appearances in the aquarium on selected dates during the 

holidays. 

There will also be free-diving demonstrations taking place 

in the 4.5 million litre Underwater Safari display on one of

into a tropical paradise 

Escape from the last of winter into a tropical paradise of giant 

butterflies, rainforests and deserts at St Andrews Botanic Garden 

and Tropical Butterfly House this Easter. Hot and dry, with family 

fun for all, imagine a holiday in the sun without airport security or 

dodgy hotel rooms – all right on your doorstep in St Andrews. 

Needing to be seen to be believed, the tropical butterflies, some as 

large as your hand, flutter around the visitor in every vibrant colour.

Summer School 2018 

The Alhambra Theatre Summer School is back for 2018! 

Following on from six successful years this exciting two 

week intensive course is not to be missed! 

The Alhambra Theatre Summer School is led by a team 

of industry professionals teaching key stage skills in 

acting, singing and dancing. 

Participants will take part in building and performing an 

all new production using short excerpts and songs from 

shows such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Sound of 

Music, The Greatest Showman on Earth, plus many, 

many more. The course will culminate in two spectacular 

performances on the Alhambra Theatre stage. 

This year’s Summer School will run from Monday 16th to 

Saturday 28th July. Monday to Friday 9.00am – 5.30pm 

and Saturday 9.30am – 12.30pm. 

The course fee of £295 includes a welcome pack and 

t – shirt. To secure your place a non-refundable deposit 

of £95 is required with your application form which is

Carrot Cake Cupcakes 

Chocolate Easter Eggs have been a traditional treat since the 19th 

Century, but that doesn’t mean that we have to over-indulge. Why 

not try these gluten-free Carrot Cake Cupcakes? They’ll tempt 

everyone – including the Easter Bunny. 

INGREDIENTS 

For the Muffins 

125g blanched almond flour 

16g coconut flour 

½ teaspoon baking soda 

1/8 teaspoon salt 

1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon 

105g honey 

2 teaspoons vanilla essence 

½ teaspoon ground ginger 

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg 

2 large eggs 

75g refined coconut oil 

50g grated carrots 

For the frosting 

55g cream cheese 

4 teaspoons maple syrup 

1 ½ vanilla essence 

(thin out with milk if needed) 

If you want to go dairy free, there 

are dairy free cream cheese and 

milk alternatives available. 

Garnish with 

Popcorn for 

a little extra 

flourish. 

INSTRUCTIONS 

1 Pre-heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 

muffin tin with 8 muffin liners. 

2 Mix together the dry ingredients (almond 

flour through to nutmeg). Set this aside. 

3 In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, 

oil, honey, and vanilla. 

4 Add the dry mix to the wet mix just until 

combined. Gently fold in the grated carrots. 

5 Divide the batter evenly among the liners 

and bake for 17-20 minutes. 

6 Let the cakes cool for 5 minutes in the 

pan and then remove to a wire rack to cool 

completely. 

Frosting 

1 Mix everything together until combined. If 

the mix seems too thick add milk sparingly 

until it suits your taste. 

2 Note: Add the frosting just before serving, 

as it will need refrigerating otherwise!

Alice Dent and the Incredible Germs 

Gwen Lowe (Chicken House, £6.99) 

Coming from a house where her parents are obsessed with 

germs, Alice isn’t surprised by their horror when she gets a 

cold. She is shocked to learn it is no ordinary cold, but a pirus, 

and she is to be taken away by the newly appointed, and rather 

sinister, Best Minister for Everything. Avoiding capture, she ends 

up in disguise at Tryton Mell, a school to turn ‘grubby good for 

nothings into politely perfect pupils’. There she starts to experience odd, but not 

unpleasant, side effects of her pirus and, whilst trying to fi nd out more about it, 

discovers ever more alarming facts about the minister and his terrible plans. It 

becomes a dangerous race against time to stay free and try and thwart the evil 

minister and his followers. This is an enjoyable read full of plot twists with a clever 

mixture of really funny and rather scary moments and really nice and truly 

horrendous characters. Fair size print, medium length novel. 

Hari and his Electric Feet 

Alexander McCall Smith (Conkers, £6.99) 

Hari is a popular, friendly boy who lives with his auntie and 

sister in a city in India. When a fi lm company starts fi lming 

nearby he goes to watch and is mistakenly set to work for 

them. This gives him the chance to watch the fi lming, in 

particular the dances, which he learns and discovers a special skill: people 

watching him just have to join in. He sees this as a way to cheer people 

up, but when a group of thieves realise his skill they try to use it to their 

advantage. However Hari has a clever way to turn the tables on them and 

use it in a constructive manner. This is an amusing and touching story with 

a very positive, feel good message. Fair size print and quite a few pictures 

encourage newly developing readers. 

Fluffywuffy - Simon Puttock/ Matt Robertson 

(Lincoln Children’s, £6.99) 

Mr Moot lives a very quiet life with his pet, 

Fluffywuffy, and that is how they like it. Their peace 

is disturbed by the arrival of cousin Clarence 

who comes to stay for a week - or maybe longer. 

Looking on the bright side, Mr Moot thinks he might 

not be much bother, but Fluffywuffy isn’t convinced. After several 

disturbed nights due to a drumkit, motorbike and chainsaw, Mr Moot 

wonders if peace will ever be restored, when it surprisingly is. Follow 

the expressive pictures carefully and you will see there is more to 

this story than he thinks - with a surprising twist. A very entertaining 

story, great to share with so much to discuss. Perfect for beginner 

readers, but fun for all abilities. I love it!
