Simply Fun
Bowls is a sport for the ultra-social and ultra-competitive alike.
Between both personalities, the art and skill of having fun whilst
competing is essential to the enjoyment of the sport.
Many people play the sport for fun. However, when it comes to
playing against your mates, we all have that little competitive bug that
comes out to play.
Traditionally, the sport of bowls has been seen as a sport that is slow,
for the older demographic, with a limited amount of skill. However, as
we all know, once we start the sport we soon realise the skill, mental
toughness and understanding that the sport possesses. Having said
that, however, we need to still have fun and enjoy the sport.
Certain methods can be adapted to ensure people in the sport can
continue to enjoy the game. Firstly, compatibility of personalities and
playing with people with the same understanding of competitiveness
is essential. Whether it is in Night Owls, Social Bowls or Pennants,
this is the key link to simply fun. However, we also need to respect
those whom have different levels of competitiveness. i.e. if a player is
up the other end laughing and enjoying the social aspect, respect that
and not let your ultra-competitivness to frustrate you.
Game Levels
Each club will have a different level of bowls, whether you are there to
have fun, be competitive or strive for perfection. Just ask at your club
to find out which levels may be available.
Social: Is a game for fun, enjoyment and new beginner bowlers.
Some states have social games called 'Corporate Bowls’ or ‘Barefoot
Bowls', which is a term to show its for new bowlers. Bring down some
mates and have a regular game each week.
Pennant: A structured competition run by your State Body that is
played over a number of weeks against other clubs in your division.
This is for competitive bowlers who have the potential to go far in the
sport, and also bowlers who enjoy competition.
Club Events: Once you are an affiliated member of a club you are
than able to play in club events. These are internal games at club
level where you get to compete against other club members in a
number of formats.
