12 Your Community The Village of Winnetka welcomed 14 new businesses in 2018, including Air Aerial Fitness, Unique Ballroom, Mathnasium, Dandelion Seeds Floral Art Salon, Walgreens, and a new location for Beat Street toy store. Winnetka is also proud of our existing businesses, several of whom were honored in Make it Better’s annual Best of the North Shore reader poll, including Get Dwell (Best Handyman), 60s Beauty Lash (Best Lashes), Stacked & Folded (Best Sandwiches), The Grand Food Center (Best Grocery Store), Restaurant Michael (Best Fine Dining), and Mino’s (Best Italian and Best New Restaurant). Implementation of the Downtown Master Plan and Streetscape Master plan will continue in 2019. Throughout the development of these plans, one of the most common requests from the Winnetka community was a desire for more places to eat in the community’s three business districts. Word has gotten out, and several new restaurants are in the works for 2019 and beyond, business update WINNETKA including Italian eatery Tocco, which is relocating to 507 Chestnut Street after 10 years in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. Construction is also expected to begin this summer on the first phase of improvements called for in the Streetscape Master Plan, which will include new sidewalks, trees, and lighting on Chestnut Street between Elm and Spruce Streets. The third annual Winnetka Music Festival will return to the East Elm business district June 21-22, 2019. Last year’s event drew two dozen musical acts and thousands of visitors to downtown Winnetka and was named Best Neighborhood Street Festival in Make it Better magazine. Also in 2019, the Village of Winnetka will mark its 150th anniversary, celebrating the sesquicentennial with a series of special events and celebrations. Your Community 13 A CLOSE-KNIT COMMUNITY TO CALL HOME NORTHFIELD A small town with a rural character and down home friendliness with big city sophistication. Oh and Northfield is also a bustling crossroads in the center of the North Shore with popular restaurants, lovely boutiques and great shopping for everything from cars to cakes. We’re also the town with the great little government that delivers top notch services with a smile. The perfect place to live and work, longtime residents agree. And so do our businesses, as our consistent near zero vacancy rate in our Village Center attests. From some of our longtime residents, we often hear comments like those from Jeanne and Pat Doherty, who have lived in Northfield for more than 40 years: “It’s the people, first of all, plus the lifestyle, the schools and the comfortable, small town atmosphere.” “Northfield is a welcoming, close-knit community in the midst of a large metropolis,” said another longtime resident. “It enjoys a warmth and intimacy often lost in larger communities.” All around, we’re fortunate to call Northfield home. Since incorporation in 1927, our little town has capitalized on its fantastic location only 20 miles from the Loop and 25 minutes to O’Hare International Airport. “Location, location, location,” touted a local business owner. “Because of that, my business has attracted customers from Winnetka, Glenview, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Glencoe, Highland Park and Northfield, of course.” Unlike most other towns our size, population 5,400, we enjoy not one but two of the highest ranked school districts in the state, serving kindergarten through 8th grade, Sunset Ridge School District 29 and Avoca School District 37, plus New Trier High School, often mentioned as one of the best high schools in the country. And now we can boast one of the most beautiful, energy efficient schools in the state with our new Sunset Ridge School, which is seeking LEED Platinum and Net Zero certification. We increasingly emphasize green planning in our village policies, as well. We have a great composting program with Waste Management and are developing green stormwater strategies. In our new Village Center infrastructure planning, we are prioritizing pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as auto safety, and are currently in the process of a Phase I study to extend the Skokie Valley Trail through Northfield. We can already see the impact in a far more walkable Willow Road, and we’re currently working with Cook County to plan a new, safer, more walkable Happ Road that includes a safe way for pedestrians to cross the street between our two main shopping malls. With our roads safe for vehicles, as well as bicycles and pedestrians, we hope to enable our residents to safely travel around town on foot or bike. Northfield boasts one of the most luxe boutique public fitness centers in the area at the Northfield Community Center. If you haven’t seen the facility, by all means drop in at the corner of Wagner and Willow. All Northfield residents have resident status, and nonresidents are welcome too. Northfielders can also purchase beach passes from Winnetka for resident rates. Our Village is most fortunate to have a wonderful group of engaged organizations, from our churches and synagogues to our social service groups, most famously the North Shore Senior Center, to serve the community. As we like to say, “We’re like the bar in the television show, ‘Cheers,’ where everybody knows your name.” While our meaning is metaphorical, Northfield literally has a couple of those bars in town! When you walk into one of our wonderful local restaurants or bars, you’ll likely see a neighbor or friend, and you’ll know you’re home. WinnetkaNorthfieldChamber.com | 2019 community guide
