WHAT MAKES OUIDAD SALON UNIQUE?
Chadwick: We know and understand curls. We have put a great deal of time and effort
into working with all types of curls and have developed techniques that offer solutions
to the challenges of naturally curly hair. Our salon is a haven for those who are blessed
with naturally curly hair. After just one visit it becomes obvious that we are addressing
the needs of curls and then bringing them to life. Because we address four curl types
we can customize services that offer solutions to even the trickiest head of curls where
sometimes 3 or 4 curl types live together on one head of hair.
What will a client experience at the salon on a typical visit? Most individuals with
curly hair are either nervous or have anxiety about visiting a salon. We want to give
them a place where they can be heard and understood. A thorough consultation will
be rendered and a plan created so that a beautiful head of curls is the destination. Our
guests will recieve luxurious shampooing and conditions treatments specially formulated
for their unique head of curls. You will receive a prescriptive at home regime and be
taught how to properly care for and maintain your look. We want our clients to be
empowered when it comes to her curls.
WHAT ARE TWO WAYS A GIRL CAN CHANGE UP HER CURLS
Chadwick: Currently one of the hottest coloring techniques we offer is Color Melting.
This technique seamlessly blends multiple tones together on a head of curls creating
a melting effect that is stunning. Not ready to shampoo yet? Let us teach you how to
build out your look and keep going about your day with out having to shampoo and
start over. We also offer styling techniques that help to elongate curls.
This is 42
It’s said that the body completely replaces itself every seven
years. While I don’t know how accurate that is, I am fully aware
that with every year, my perspective of the world changes. Seven
years ago, I was living in a completely different state, my children
were still trying to figure out the things that make them who they
are, I was about 50 pounds heavier and I’d only been running this
magazine for a little under a year. Today, I am actually happy to
be a year older and glad to have enjoyed my life to this point but
am ready to begin this new chapter.
I’ve always felt that birthdays are akin to our personal New Year.
I come up with a collection of goals I hope to accomplish; I have
a big celebration with my family and friends, and it’s just as hard
to get used to! And just like every year, I’m prepared to face the
challenges of my day-to-day life that are bound to arise through
a multitude of situations. However, I’m also thrilled to have the
opportunity to confront them because, after each one, I become
stronger. As for the magazine, I’m going to make it the best year
ever!
And, it’s all starting with this month’s brand new issue! We have
a great selection of articles this month that I’m extremely excited
to share with you. Our main theme is “staycation.” We have
amazing, top-of-the-line articles on weight loss, exercise, and
even on parenting tips. These articles will, hopefully, help those
of you in need of a little guidance while you start a new stage
in life, just as I am. I wish all of my readers a Happy October and
hope you're able to make this your best month ever!
HEALTHY SOUL
FRIENDSHIP
More and more of us appear
to have fewer and fewer
people in our lives whom
we would consider friends.
And lest the word friend be left too
ambiguous, let a friend be defined as
someone with whom you have confided
matters that are truly important to you
within the past six months.
Researchers cite evidence that Americans
have a third fewer close friends than just
a couple of decades ago. More disturbing
still, the data seem to indicate that the
number of us who have nobody to count
as a close personal friend has more than
doubled.
The findings hold for both males and
females. They are consistent for people
of all races, ages, and educational levels.
Even within families, the degree of
intimacy has diminished considerably. All
this information can’t be good news, for
it translates into people who feel lonelier
and more isolated than ever.
Emotionally healthy people form
meaningful ties with other human beings.
They don’t just exchange information but
share personal things. They talk about
likes and dislikes, joys and fears. They
extend themselves to help others and
know how to accept assistance when
they get in over their heads.
When they have important
decisions to make, they get
insight and support from
their friends.
Everybody needs a handful
of people with whom to
connect in these intimate
ways. Nobody is smart
enough, strong enough,
or competent enough to
negotiate something as
complicated as this human
adventure called life alone.
John Donne protested the idea that men
and women could function in splendid
isolation from one another. “No man is
an island, entire of itself,” he wrote.
I know. You’re busy! So is everybody else
– including the people who are healthy
enough to have emotional ties. You don’t
have time for the obligations in your life
already? I understand that excuse too.
But the issue here is priorities. Which
is more important? Playing computer
games or having a friend? Getting a
bigger house or loving (and being loved
by) the people in the house you have
now? Making extra cash or having a real
life?
"
The same research shows not only that
people have fewer friends these days but
that more and more of us are feeling the
need for them. With the circle drawn so
tiny, people are feeling lonely. Everybody
needs people to count on.
If you are one of those people in need
of friends, the best advice I can give is
this: Spend more time being a friend to
someone than in trying to find one.
Care to guess what sort of
dividend is returned on that
investment?
Emotionally healthy people
human beings."
5 WAYS TO BULLY-PROOF YOUR
KID
WANT TO BE A BETTER PARENT?
PLANT A GARDEN

HEALTHY KIDS
5
WAYS TO
BULLY-PROOF
YOUR KID
Did you know that 25% of
public schools report that
bullying among kids occurs on
a daily or weekly basis? And
that 1 in 5 high school students
report being bullied in the past
year?
The good news is that, because bullying
has made national headlines, schools and
communities (and even celebrities) are taking a
strong anti-bullying stance.
You can do your part at home, too. Here are five
smart strategies to keep kids from becoming
targets — and stop bullying that has already
started:
TALK ABOUT IT. Talk about bullying
01with your kids and have other family
members share their experiences. If one of your
kids opens up about being bullied, praise him or
her for being brave enough to discuss it and offer
unconditional support. Consult with the school to
learn its policies and find out how staff and teachers
can address the situation.
REMOVE THE BAIT.
02If it’s lunch money or
gadgets that the school bully is
after, you can help neutralize the
situation by encouraging your child
to pack a lunch or go to school
gadget-free.
KEEP CALM
03ANDCARRY ON. If a
bully strikes, a kid’s best defense
may be to remain calm, ignore
hurtful remarks, tell the bully to
stop and simply walk away. Bullies
thrive on hurting others. A child
who isn’t easily ruffled has a better
chance of staying off a bully’s radar.
BUDDY UP FOR
04 SAFETY. Two or more
friends standing at their lockers are
less likely to be picked on than a
child who is all alone. Remind your
child to use the buddy system when
on the school bus, in the bathroom
or wherever bullies may lurk.
DON’T TRY TO
05 FIGHT THE BATTLE
YOURSELF. Sometimes
talking to a bully’s parents can be
constructive, but it’s generally best
to do so in a setting where a school
official, such as a counselor, can
mediate.
HEALTHY KIDS
WANT TO BE A
BETTER PARENT?
PLANT A GARDEN
LEAVE FLOWERS ALONE TOO LONG AND
THEY WILT – OR EVEN DIE
All flowers: delphinium, roses,
hydrangeas, etc. need water, trimming
and adequate attention every week. If
they are ignored too long, you pay the
price of cleaning up the mess in the
garden and seeing thriving flowers die.
Parenting well is a lot like being a master gardener. I
have learned a lot of parenting lessons tending to the
perennials in my garden (and I’m not a master gardener.)
Here are a few of them:
GET WEEDS OUT BY THEIR ROOTS
Whether you’re growing finicky roses,
tender delphinium or indomitable hostas,
weeds will try to snuff the life out of a
healthy plant. All flowers are susceptible
to being attacked by the nasty greens.
The trick to preventing weeds from
harming flowers is to dig beneath the
weed’s roots to keep it from returning.
Pulling off the top and leaving the roots
behind (which I have been guilty of
doing) allows them to rob the flower’s
roots from vital nutrients. Then the plant
will limp along looking
pretty enough on the
surface for a while,
but eventually, those
remnant roots will get
the best of the plant.
What weeds do your kids have working in
their lives that threaten their emotional,
intellectual or physical health? Some
weeds might look pretty on the surface
but make no mistake, if you don’t help
your kids steer clear of them, they can
eventually strangle the life out of them.
Here are the ones that I frequently see
erupting in kids’ lives: an unhealthy
friendship, drugs, drinking, kids being
sexually active, addiction to electronics
and more. Weeds in your children’s lives
come in all different forms – so when you
identify what is threatening your childattack
it hard and fight for your kids. Yank
those weeds up by their roots.
GOOD PRUNING IS DONE WHILE
PLANTS ARE ALIVE
I love pruning my plants in the fall.
Something about clearing dead branches
and stems feels like I’m ridding my garden
of toxins. But pruning during the summer
when the blooms are full and the flowers
look stunning really bothers me. Cutting
back something thriving and lovely feels
intuitively wrong. If you’re a gardener
you know exactly what I mean. Lop those
beautiful blossoms off at the right place,
wait a few weeks – and voila! Bigger,
stronger and more blossoms grow in the
same spot that you macerated.
No parent likes to discipline a son or
daughter. We want to be nice. We don’t
want confrontation or arguments and
wedon’t ever want to feel that our kids
don’t like us. So we look at them, see
a blossom or two and think, “Well, at
least they’re not as bad as their friends”,
and we leave them alone. Don’t ever
excuse yourself from healthy pruning. It
hurts, but that’s what good parents and
gardeners do to get the best results in the
future.
If there is one golden rule that I would
prescribe to every parent, it is this: the
more time you spend with your kids, the
bigger the payoff for them (and you) in
the future. Period. This is especially true
if you have a troubled child. The answer
to an angry teen’s issues isn’t less time
with parents – but more time. Tough to
hear, but it’s true. That’s how problems
get solved.
We parents are blinded by the desire to
do more, work more, and expand our
interests beyond home life and we get
duped into believing that our kids are
“just fine” if we spend little time with
them. Never be duped by the seductions
around you wooing you away from
time with your kids. Studies show that
the average parent spends 43 minutes
per day with their child and that same
child spends 7 hours per day in front of
a screen. Computers, iPhones and all
instruments with screens can act like
fertilizer: a little is just fine but too much
will kill the plant.
Keeping your
attention
focused
on your
family helps
everyone grow.
HEALTHY BODY
ARE YOUR COOL TATTOOS
COVERING CANCER WARNING SIGNS?
COVERING UP A PROBLEM
Skin cancer can occur within a tattoo. That’s
why doctors recommend avoiding placing a
tattoo over an existing mole – and thus hiding
your opportunity to notice changes that may
indicate skin cancer.
Another concern is that tattoos sometimes
result in a bump or lesion that mimics skin
cancer. Besides potentially ruining the tattoo,
this type of lesion can so closely resemble a
type of skin cancer known as squamous cell
carcinoma that it may require a biopsy. In
some cases, the lesion may need to be treated
as a skin cancer, with additional surgery.
Skin cancer is the most common type of
cancer, according to the American Cancer
Society. It is often further categorized as
melanoma or non-melanoma cancer. Most
non-melanoma skin cancer is basal cell
carcinoma, which rarely spreads to distant
sites in the body, but it can be disfiguring and
may invade nearby tissues.
The second most common type of nonmelanoma
skin cancer is squamous cell
carcinoma. Both often develop on sunexposed
parts of the skin, but can develop on
other parts of the skin as well.
HELPFUL TIPS
If you are planning to get a tattoo,
consider these recommendations from
the American Academy of Dermatology:
The social acceptability
of tattoos has changed in
recent years. No longer
limited mainly to sailors
and bikers, colorful
and creative tattoos
have become more
mainstream.
But when it comes to health risks, tattoos
are like real estate: location matters. Doctors
warn tattoo artists and customers to be
careful to avoid covering up moles that could
become cancerous.
An estimated 40 percent of adults between
the ages of 26 and 40 have at least one tattoo,
according to a study from the Pew Research
Center. Each year Americans spend more than
$1.65 billion on tattoos from one of 21,000
tattoo parlors in the country. Indeed, in many
The composition of tattoo ink has changed
dramatically over the years. Today, many
modern tattoo inks (especially intense
reds and yellows) contain organic azo dyes
with plastic-based pigments that also have
industrial uses in printing, textiles, and car
paint, according to the American Academy
of Dermatology. As a result, there are many
unknowns about how these inks interact with
the skin and within the body and whether
they are responsible for an increasing number
of complications.
As for cancer risk, the good news is that no
increased prevalence of skin cancer has been
found in people with tattoos. For patients
with skin cancer, the inks used in tattoos
have not been shown to increase the risk
of recurrence, according to the Skin Cancer
Foundation. But that doesn’t mean tattoos
are necessarily completely safe.
• Choose a professional tattoo parlor
and a licensed tattoo artist.
• Insist on seeing equipment in sterile
packaging.
• Let the tattoo artist know if you have
a reaction. If a problem lasts more
than one to two weeks, see a boardcertified
dermatologist.
• Check with a board-certified
dermatologist before getting a
tattoo, especially if you have a
chronic skin condition such as
psoriasis, eczema, or a tendency
toward keloid scarring.
• Avoid tattooing over a mole because
it will make it more difficult to
diagnose a problem if the mole
changes in the future.
Remember that when it comes to skin cancer
safety, what tattoos potentially hide is more
important than what they may reveal about
your personality and artistic sensibilities.
The Path to a
Rewarding Life
PART 2
The Why:
A
lot of the participation in unconscious cultural
habits is biological – which is why I would relate
digitally connected groups to an organism: when
we are connected to others, we act as one. That’s
because we are social beings and biologically, it’s encoded
into our DNA to follow the group. At one point in time, our
survival relied heavily on fitting into the group. For example,
if someone is charismatic, we will more likely follow their
beliefs and disregard our own knowledge. This is why cult
leaders are all charismatic. We will also, by nature be more
inclined to believe authority figures even if our own knowledge
conflicts. Authority figures meaning anyone with perceived
status – including government officials, celebrities, or anyone
well-exposed in media. So without the influence of others,
you would likely not use much of the media you currently
consume. It’s a way to be a part of the collective organism and
when you’re outside it, it feels like you’re disconnecting from
“the right way to be social.”
"To stay distracted throughout
life makes you more shallow,
like selective feeling or partial
color blindness."
So why would we choose to be more “in our bodies” and
experience all the day-to-day pain? Is there any real benefit?
What if you like your ego? Why would you want to be bored,
vulnerable, reflective, or live without the numbing agents?
Here’s the thing about experiences– when you feel them, you
grow as a result of them. They change you and give you more
capacities, moving forward. Pain and stress and conflict is
how we grow. It is quite literally – the way we widen our scope
as humans. To stay distracted throughout life makes you
more shallow, like selective feeling or partial color blindness.
And the lack of investment in how you feel means a lack of
feedback about your own understanding of the world – and
that understanding is vital to knowing who you are. It’s like
taking a walk somewhere and seeing it vs. deciding you don’t
want to stray from your front yard. The former gives you new
understanding of a part of the world you didn’t know existed
before and your map gets wider. The next time, you will not
only know where you’re going, you’ll be confident about it
and can explore a bit further. Every time you go through a real
experience with your mind squarely inside your body, you get
stronger, happier, deeper. You can understand more about
yourself and the world. You evolve in all directions. I mean you
get smarter, more compassionate, and super powered! Like an
enhanced version of you.
16 / HEALTHY MIAMI

HEALTHY SOUL
In contrast, when you avoid pain or try
to resist and control your exposure to it,
the hurt gets worse. When you hide from
discomfort and try to ignore and numb it,
it festers and grows more powerful in our
fear of it– and over time, the sensitivity to
it becomes a false truth that retards your
growth and evolution overall. It’s the notlooking-at-it
that makes that spot softer
and that muscle never develops. And just
like a muscle, areas of our self can also
weaken without use – it creates a habit
in that it catalyzes more of the same
style of coping. Like becoming more and
more fragile or less and less, you. And in
the act of resisting, we create more pain
– this is truly where the majority of the
pain comes from. The fear and the lack
of control. When we remove the internal
dialogue around something, it’s not
nearly as bad in our experience. Kind of
like the the moment right before you get
your ears pieced: the anticipation is the
hard part, then afterwards you’re like,
whatevs.
And this is not to say all pain is in
this bucket. I know that some pain
is too overwhelming and it feels lifethreatening:
when you feel so fragile
that anything could shatter you or so
in agony that you’d rather be in severe
physical pain. It’s like sitting in a fire. In
these situations, sometimes assistance
like medication or therapy is necessary.
And it’s not a copout – it’s you knowing
yourself and trusting yourself enough
to take the right steps. If that sounds
like you, don’t second guess
your mental health
and definitely see a
doctor. Regardless
of whether or
not you require
help to
manage pain,
know that
everything
passes. And
though it
feels really
terrible,
it doesn’t
kill you. You move through it. And then
the next time, it hurts the tiniest bit less
and you’re a little bit more experienced
in handling it. And the next time, a little
less than that. Whether or not you can
see it with your own eyes, you are always
changing and growing. It takes great
distance to have enough perspective
on your life, so trust that change is
inevitable when you move through
difficult times.
Even if you’re a self-aware
person, you cannot see much
of what is going on inside
yourself – including what truly
motivates your decisions.
That is because your survival
mechanisms are so deeply engrained,
you won’t be able to identify when fear is
the underlying motivator. However – you
can take apart your habits by examining
your behavior and this is how you
ultimately change. Once you step outside
the inner sphere of emotions, you can
take a highlighter to your behaviors and
begin to understand how they work. It
is like a manual workaround that you
can apply that allows you to consciously
decide what guides your life’s path. It
starts when you realize you have a choice
to make, at all.
BIOFEEDBACK
THERAPY
Biofeedback
therapy is a
training program
that attempts
to teach patients how
to control, through both
mental and physical,
involuntary physiological
processes that contribute
to painful symptoms. It is a
mind-body technique.
It is used in a bid to manage muscle pain,
anxiety, high blood pressure, insomnia and
the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
What the majority of these problems have
in common is that the symptoms can be
exacerbated by stress. It is for this reason
that many experts believe biofeedback
to be helpful, as it is a means for patients
to improve their overall wellbeing. It is a
natural technique for stress relief.
A normal biofeedback session involves a
trained therapist assessing the condition
of the patient and then performing some
tests. Specialized equipment is utilized for
physiological signs to be converted into
meaningful information the patient can
understand. Heart rate, muscle tension,
brainwave activities and skin temperature
are the most frequently used tests. The most
common disorder that biofeedback training
is used to combat is anxiety. These sessions
last between 30 to 60 minutes and typically
last up to 3 months. There are patients who
continue to participate for years. The goal,
however, is for the patients to be able to
practice the techniques the therapist has
taught them without the sessions or the
machines and tests.
Biofeedback therapy has been used
for decades by sports trainers and
psychologists. The Cleveland Clinic has
started a study as to whether this therapy
could be of use to those patients with
multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and coronary
artery disease.
For now, though, those treated are patients
with incontinence problems, tension
headaches, insomnia, muscle spasms,
chronic pain, epilepsy, cancer recovery,
autism, ADHD, eating disorders, anxiety,
depression, IBS, TMJ, heart disease and any
other illness that can be made worse by
stress.
It is the ideal option for patients who are
intolerant to medications, failing to see a
response to conventional treatment, women
who are breastfeeding, or women who are
pregnant.
There
are some
benefits to
biofeedback
therapy.
There is a reduction in headaches because
it lowers a person’s stress response. This
means those with frequent headaches
dependent on pain medications can
decrease their usage, which in turn helps
liver health.
It’s a well-established treatment option for
chronic constipation. Up to 80% of patients
that underwent biofeedback therapy saw an
improvement in their symptoms.
Anxiety is the most frequent illness to
be referred for biofeedback training. It is
used in conjunction with CBT, and it helps
patients become more aware of their
feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Patients
are encouraged to track their symptoms
to understand how their body responds to
them and makes their anxiety worse.
With the attention on how painkillers are
creating severe addiction problems across
the US, biofeedback therapy has never been
more important in pain management. It is
useful in adults and children, can result in a
50% decrease in pain, though it could take
as many as 40 sessions to see the benefits.
The reason biofeedback therapy has been
used to improve heart health is because
insomnia, anxiety, and depression can have
an impact on cardiovascular diseases. It
makes sense to manage those issues to have
a knock on effect of helping other diseases.
Insomnia and ADHD symptoms can also be
improved through biofeedback therapy.
It treats hyperarousal, which can have an
impact on the illnesses mentioned.
Staycation
Vacation time is
important, and as
it stands most of
Americans only use half
of their paid vacation days. Add that
to the fact that Americans have the
least paid vacation time across the
world and you wonder how we don’t
collapse into nervous breakdowns
twice a year. NPR details just
how different paid vacations are
across the world, highlighting that
on average Americans have just
12 days, while the law protects
those in Germany with up to 20,
the Netherlands guarantees 26
days, and the UK offers 28. A Harris
Interactive survey discovered
that Americans have on average 9
vacation days remaining at the end
of the period.
WebMD discusses the importance
of taking breaks. Being unable
to disconnect from work affects
personal relationships, and your
overall health and wellbeing.
Additionally, up to 8 weeks after
your break, you can be left with that
feel good boost.
Not everyone is in a financial
position to head off to Europe or
Hawaii. It doesn’t have to be a
luxurious break for you to see the
true effects of a vacation.
Just imagine it- freedom from work.
That means not having to check
voicemails and emails constantly
after you’ve left for the day. And
you may think that working hard
without a break makes you a more
valuable asset to your employerbut
you’d be wrong. A Lexis Nexis
survey canvassed workers across
5 countries to discover just how
workers are feeling. Information
overload has left over 50% at
breaking point. Many workers admit
that they feel obliged to check
emails while vacationing. That is not
a true break.
The majority of Americans are under
stress, and whether it may come
from our working lives, family or
monetary issues, the toll of can
be massive. Stress impacts our
immune systems- making it difficult
to resist infections, or avoid injury.
Being stressed out interferes with
sleep, too, and when you’re tired
and stressed out you are even more
susceptible to illness or accidents.
Additionally, it has an impact on
digestion. Then there is the mental
toll it is taking- it can leave you
irritable and anxious, as well as in
a state of depression. Your memory
begins to fail and you are left
making poor decisions.
Vacations are an opportunity to
break the cycle of stress. Don’t
worry if you can’t make it out of
town, you can make a staycation
work for you just as well as a spa
retreat. Even if you can escape for
a couple of days out of your week
to stay at a local hotel, do it. Allow
yourself the time to shut off and
relax.
There are plenty of sites to help you
find exactly what you’re looking for
at a price you can afford, so check
them out: booking.com, hotelfinder.
com, Best Hotel Offers, and more.
Never feel guilty about taking
vacation time, and don’t feel
tempted to check your emails or
messages.
ARE YOU AT
HIGH RISK
FOR CANCER?
Certain traits such as being tall or short
or having brown eyes or blue eyes are
hereditary and are passed on from one
generation to another. What you may not
realize is that about 10% of many cancers
may be related to heredity. Alterations or
mutations in genes that can be
passed down from generation
to generation may cause an
increased risk for certain types of
cancer. Blood tests are available to
determine if you are at greater risk
than usual for breast, ovarian, colon,
uterine, and other cancers.
For instance, if you carry certain
mutations in genes known as
BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 genes, you
may have up to 87% lifetime
risk to develop breast cancer as well
as up to 44% lifetime risk to develop
ovarian cancer. Without the mutation,
your lifetime risk for breast cancer is
about 8% and for ovarian cancer about
2%. Other gene mutations can increase
lifetime risk for colon cancer up to 82%
and for uterine cancer up to 71%. For
the general population, the lifetime risk
for colon or uterine cancer is 1.5% to
2%.
It is not appropriate for everyone to be
tested for these gene mutations. The
testing is not intended for the general
population. If you or members of
your family have any of the following
diagnoses, you may be a good
candidate for genetic testing:
99
Breast cancer diagnosed before
age 50
99
Ovarian cancer at any age
99
Bilateral breast cancer
99
Both breast and ovarian cancers
99
Male breast cancer at any age
99
Ashkenazi/Eastern European
descent
99
Colon/rectal cancer before age 50
99
Uterine (endometrial) cancer
99
Several family members with colon
cancer
99
Stomach or ovarian cancer
Someone in your family has been
diagnosed with a known genetic
mutation that places them at higher
than usual risk for cancer
Genetic testing will not
tell you if you have cancer
but will help to determine
your risk for cancer and
help determine steps that
can be taken to decrease
your risk.
If you test positive for a mutation,
there are successful strategies now
in use that can decrease your risk of
developing cancer. These options
may include taking medications or
undergoing preventive surgeries. Even
if you are unwilling to take medications
or undergo preventive surgery, you can
at least be monitored closely so that if a
cancer does develop, it can be detected
early while it is still curable.
Knowing your risk for cancer and doing
everything you can to lower it can make
a big difference for you, your family,
and your future healthcare choices.
The first step is to take a look at your
family history. Talk to family members
to determine who has had cancer, what
type of cancer they had, and how old
they were when diagnosed.
Talk to your health care provider if you
think hereditary cancer risk assessment
may be appropriate for you. When
referred for genetic testing, your family
history will be reviewed to be certain
you are a candidate for the test.
Management options available for you,
if you test positive, will be reviewed so
that you will be well-informed. There
will be an explanation of what the
test results will mean to you, whether
positive or negative. You will hear how
your test results will help determine if
other family members should be tested.
Privacy laws will be discussed to assure
you that the use of genetic test results
cannot be used to determine eligibility
or rates of health insurance. (State and
Federal laws prohibit health insurance
discrimination based on genetic
information).
Most insurances cover hereditary
cancer risk assessment, with the
majority of patients paying a
coinsurance of 10% or less. Many
patients’ tests are covered 100%.
Even if there is a strong family history of
breast, ovarian, colon, or uterine cancer
in your family, cancer is not inevitable.
Learning about your risk for developing
one of these cancers may be helpful
in preventing it or at least in helping
to detect it early. Discuss your family
history of cancer with your physician at
your next appointment.
THE NEW ANTI
AGING THERAPY, THE
ORTHOMOLECULAR
MEDICINE.
NAKED BEAUTY

COVER STORY
INCREASE
PHYSICAL
ACTIVITY
Less than 60% of adults are
physically active on a regular
basis, 25% aren’t active at all.
Inactive individuals have a
higher risk of heart disease,
diabetes, high blood pressure,
and obesity. So, to build a family
based on healthy habits, it’s up to
you to set the tone at home.
PLAN TO MOVE
When you make the decision to be more active, decide when
and how you are going to be more active. Schedule your
regular physical activity into your day so that it’s part of your
routine and not an add-on that you hope to get to. And when
things come up, plan around your physical activity so that it
becomes a fixture in your life. Just decide to move, and then
plan that movement into your day.
Move More
BREAK IT UP
It is recommended for kids to get 60
minutes of physical activity every day and
adults to get about 30. But you don’t have to do it all at the
same time. Fit your fitness activities into 10-15 minute bursts
that work for your schedule.
AS A FAMILY
It’s easier to encourage your
family to move more when you
move with them. Your family
may be walkers. Go for a walk
every night after dinner. Or
maybe you’re runners, or basketball players, or really have
no preference at all and just want to try a new form of fitness
every day. Take the time to learn what activities your family
enjoys together, and plan those activities into your day.
SET GOALS
“To be healthier” is a hard goal to determine
success. Set measurable goals for your
family’s physical activity achievements. You
can decide that your family will be active for
60 minutes five days out of the week. At the
end of the week you can look back and see
if you made your goal or if you need to work
harder next week.
Types of Measurable Goals
• Distance Goals
• Frequency Goals
• Intensity Goals
• Length-of-time Goals
Team Healthier Generation
Studies have shown that 71% of American’s are ready to get
active but just need a reason to move. We think your own
health is a great reason, and you can improve your own
health while raising awareness and much needed funds for
our cause to end childhood obesity. Our endurance training
and fundraising network, Team Healthier Generation, will give
you the coaching and support to meet your fitness goals and
the resources and assistance to fundraise for a great cause.
HEALTHY BODY
THE NEW ANTI
AGING THERAPY,
THE ORTHOMOLECULAR
MEDICINE.
Taking into account our modern life,
one that is moving at a fast pace,
working long hours in contaminated
environments can make our physical
and mental body age prematurely and cause
the rise of free radicals in our blood. Because
of this, cellular apoptosis can happen, and it is
necessary to take steps toward a new medicine
called the Orthomolecular Medicine.
Dr. Linus Pauling (Double Nobel Prize Winner), in 1968, created
the term, Orthomolecular Medicine, and he defined it as the
Optimal Molecule (from the Greek word: Orto-Optimal).
Orthomolecular medicine is part of the principle that a disease
does not exist; what exists is the malnutrition of the cell; thus,
it involves returning the optimal concentration of natural
substances that are present in our organisms, with the purpose
of correcting alterations for the lack or excess of nutrients to
reach or maintain good health.
Orthomolecular medicine holds that health is the result of
optimal nutrition, capable of supplying an optimal biochemical
environment to all cells in the human body, being that the
disease is no more than the product of an environment that has
become unbalanced and chemically altered.
The treatment is a four-step
process, performed through a
IV Therapy.
1. DETOXIFICATION: The
purpose of detoxification
is to eliminate the toxic
residues and heavy
metal that could happen,
eventually, in order to
get a bigger nutrient
assimilation.
2. NUTRITION: Optimal
molecules nourish any
lacking that could exist.
3. RESTORATION: Nourish
the organ or damaged
system, with trace
minerals, amino acids,
and vitamins.
4. MAINTENANCE: Correct
and guide the individual
in a healthy, rightful way
of proper nutrition.
IV THERAPY
Treatment based on the
intravenous application of
Physiological Solution with
bioregulatory medicine
with the purpose of
improving the patient's
health produces wellness
and favors their physical
aspect. All of these achieve
the healthy functioning of
the organism and prevent
Immunodeficiency disorders
by applying vitamins, trace
elements, and natural
biological pharmaceuticals
according to their specific
needs, such as getting thinner,
clearing skin, and enhancing
the health of internal organs.
The detoxification of the
organism is one of the
primary indications of
IV Therapy because this
activates the immune
system and carries out the
elimination of its toxins.
When combined with several
natural medicaments in
serum, you enhance the
therapeutic effects, observing
the honest recovery of the
patient.
The effect of IV Therapy is it’s
seen in a quick way, allowing
the patient to reestablish
the normal functions of
the affected organs, regain
vitality, and live a full life, as
this helps to optimize the
physical and intellectual
performance.
IV Therapy is administered
according to the needs of
each person. Follow your
doctor's recommendations
for optimal results. Each
treatment lasts about 30
minutes.
Generally on a first
appointment, depending on
the diagnostic, the doctor will
prescribe the proper scheme
for the patient, as well as the
formula of the IV Therapy that
the organism requires and the
number of sessions required
to apply the treatment.
The most frequent uses of IV
Therapy are for detoxification,
chronic fatigue, osteoporosis,
migraines, gastritis,
depression and anxiety, viral
infections, sinusitis (acute
and chronic), and addictions
(nicotine, alcohol, drugs and
others). IV Therapy acts faster
than oral medication as the
intravenous application has
an immediate effect on the
organism.
There are many professionals
you can consult with about
IV Therapy. Always search for
a doctor that takes time to
educate their patients on the
benefits of treatments such as
these, as well as the followup
needed to ensure the best
results possible.
FITNESS & BEAUTY
One essential component of valuing
oneself is taking the time to exercise and
eat well. It is one of the simplest ways to
say to yourself: I love you, I am going to
take good care of you today. When you
take good care of your body, your body,
in turn, takes good care of you. Immunity
goes up when you exercise and eat
right, making you less prone to sickness.
Science continues to prove just how
beneficial it is to move our bodies.
Our bodies are beautiful
gifts and we should honor
them by exercising and
eating nourishing food.
I
love to look at myself naked; Naked in
vulnerability; Naked in truth, and yes,
NAKED. We should all learn to love
to look at ourselves naked. There are so
many times in which we feel as though
we are less than what we are worth, and
we don't take the time to look honestly
at ourselves and appreciate our own
inner and outer beauty.
It is so important to be able to look at
that nakedness, look ourselves right in
the eyes and say: “I love you. You are
beautiful, just as you are".
It is important to do so, especially when
you are naked in all aspects, because
that is when you are the truest form
of yourself. Sometimes we can be so
harsh on ourselves, trying to live up to
unrealistic expectations imposed on us
by society. It can be really damaging.
That's why even on my hardest days,
Naked
Beauty
days when I have moments when I feel
much less than perfect, I force myself
to look in the mirror and say I love you.
Because even if my mother or neighbor
thinks I am beautiful, wonderful, and
amazing, it has no value if I don't
appreciate that which is already within
me, and it is of the utmost importance
that we truly value and love ourselves as
we grow throughout the journey of life.
There is an art to learning to value
and appreciate oneself, and it simply
starts by loving yourself when you are
completely naked in every sense of the
way. When we are naked, we are honest,
and true progress can only begin when
we are honest with ourselves. A person
that truly values and appreciates their
worth treats themselves well, and in
turn, treats those around them even
better.
I value and honor myself enough to make
healthy choices, and I especially want my
children to see this. How can we teach
our children to value themselves, if they
do not see their parents doing so? That's
yet another reason for taking good care
of myself. All too often we place our
value into the opinions of others. Our
standards should be set higher than that.
We should hold the firm belief that we
ARE worth treating ourselves well. And
exercise and healthy eating habits are
one of the greatest ways we can show
ourselves that we are loved and valued.
Marian Anderson once wrote: “A serious
person does not wait for the words of the
critic. He checks himself. Deep in his heart
he knows what his standards should be
and he strives to be faithful to them.”
Strive to be faithful to treating yourself
well and incorporating healthy habits
into your lifestyle. Set this standard for
yourself. I encourage you to get naked
and fearlessly take a good loving look
at yourself and value what you have.
Valuing and appreciating yourself affects
every single aspect of your life. Your
health and wellness are vital to a happy
and fruitful life.
From my
heart to yours,
Namaste.
HEALTHY FOOD
Coconut oil contains
high amounts of lauric
acid, which has been
shown to exert antimicrobial,
anti-viral and
anti-fungal effects.
Interest in coconut oil has rapidly grown after
being added to the list of superfoods, joining
the more renowned quinoa, chia seeds and
kale. These foods were already present on
the menus of many health conscious people
before being labeled as “super,” but now
there seems to be an obsession with them.
It’s always great when people are interested
in eating healthier and incorporating more
nourishing foods into their diets, but before
adopting the latest trend or adding a new
food to your diet, it’s worth becoming
familiar with the nutritional value of that
specific food and its potential health effects,
good and bad.
IF IT’S HIGH IN SATURATED FATS, HOW
CAN IT BE HEALTHY?
Some dietitians hold back when
recommending to replace olive oil or butter
with coconut oil because it contains 90%
saturated fats. If you’re familiar with the
general guidelines for healthy eating, you
probably know that saturated fats are
traditionally considered unhealthy.
Coconut oil does contain a lot of saturated
fats, but the interesting fact is that these fats
are medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), and
theory says these fatty acids are beneficial.
According to existing studies, MCTs, like lauric
acid, which is found in large amounts in
coconut oil, possess anti-microbial and antibacterial
properties and are easier to digest
than other fats.
Lauric acid, in particular, has the ability to
improve the levels of HDL and can be used
very effectively for energy production. Unlike
long-chain saturated fatty acids, like those
found in junk food, MCTs are metabolized
differently; they go directly to the liver from
the digestive tract and the body quickly turns
them into energy or uses them to produce
ketone bodies, which have been shown
to have therapeutic effects in people with
Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy.
COCONUT OIL:
PASSING DIET FAD OR SUPERFOOD?
PROVEN BENEFITS OF COCONUT
OIL WEIGHT LOSS: Studies have
shown that coconut oil can help
in weight loss, as it contains fewer
calories than other fats and increases
energy expenditure by about 5%.
Moreover, the same ketone bodies
that help Alzheimer’s and epilepsy
patients have been shown to exert
an appetite-reducing effect, so
by simply adding coconut oil to
your diet you can control your
cravings and hunger in a more
efficient manner (McClernon, Yancy,
Eberstein, 2007).
INFECTIONS: When the body
digests the fatty acids in coconut
oil, a substance called monolaurin
is produced, and both lauric acid
and monolaurin have been shown
to exert anti-bacterial effects. This
makes coconut oil a powerful ally
against bacterial and viral infections,
and a trustful solution for people
struggling with yeast infections.
SEIZURES: The ketone bodies
produced in the liver when coconut
oil is metabolized have been proven
to reduce the rate of seizures in
children affected by epilepsy.
SKIN AND HAIR: Some studies
suggest that this superfood can
be used not only internally but
externally as well, being able to
improve the moisture and lipid
content of skin. Also, it has been
shown that coconut oil can protect
the hair against sun damage and can
block about 20% of UV rays, acting
as a natural sunscreen. Given that it
is skin-friendly and can kill bacteria
and pathogens found on the skin’s
surface, coconut oil can also be used
for cleansing and reducing the risk of
acne outbreaks.
With so many studies supporting the
use of coconut oil, it’s no wonder that
this superfood has been embraced
so enthusiastically; however, there
aren’t enough studies on the longterm
effects of coconut oil, so before
stocking up and eating it by the
spoonful, keep in mind that even
if it is a superfood, it is still an oil
and should be consumed in limited
amounts, just as with olive oil, canola
oil and with butter.
WHY I CHOOSE ALMOND
FLOUR
HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT
EARTH?

HEALTHY FOOD
WHY I CHOOSE
ALMOND FLOUR
There're so many people who love almond flour, and it’s not
hard to see why it’s their first choice over wheat and other,
often less healthy options available. Almond flower is both
a gluten-free flour and an excellent choice for anyone on a
low-carbohydrate diet. If you’re following a special diet or just
being healthy and looking to bake without grains, almond
flour is a must-have in your cupboard! This flour is made of
almonds and only almonds! So you get all the health benefits
that come with eating a bunch of heart-healthy nuts.
See, almonds are impressively
high in nutrition! One cup
contains just under ninety
almonds and gives you more
than 100 percent of your
daily requirement of vitamin
E, as well as almost 99 mg of
magnesium, plus 257 mg of
potassium. It’s super versatile
as it can be used in all kinds
of baked foods and is unlike
overly processed wheat flour
or other alternatives that do
little to nothing good for your
health. Almond flour is moist
and delicious and has so
many health benefits! So let’s
discuss a few below…
It’s super important in
keeping your heart healthy!
More than 65 percent of the
fat in almond flour is monounsaturated,
which has
been proven to be excellent
in maintaining healthy
cholesterol levels which lead
to good overall heart health.
Scientists have also found
that eating almonds in any
form (including the tasty
flour!) can keep your blood
vessels healthy which helps
avoid coronary heart disease.
Eating almonds also
significantly increases the
level of antioxidants in the
bloodstream, which can
improve blood flow and
therefore reduce blood
pressure. All these amazing
health benefits add up to one
healthy heart and lower risk
of heart disease.
Almond flower also manages
blood sugars, a study
produced in 2006 found that
for healthy individuals, after
a meal, almonds decrease
blood glucose levels and
increase levels of insulin in
the system. Antioxidant levels
in the blood also increased
after the almond-laden meal.
Which is all good news for
any people with diabetes out
there.
The flour also encourages
weight loss and a healthy
waistline! Here’s a study
that was conducted
between 2 groups of
people who had bad
cholesterol levels. Each
group was given a
healthy diet
for 12 weeks total. The first
group was given a healthy
1.5-ounce portion of almonds
to incorporate into their
diets. The other group was
given a carbohydrate-rich
muffin. The two snacks have
the same calorific content,
the only difference in their
diets was this snack. After
six weeks each group would
switch the snacks, so the
first group would now eat
the muffins and the second
the almonds. The study
showed that when the two
groups snacked on almonds,
their bad cholesterol level
was reduced as well as their
healthy good cholesterol
levels being increased! Eating
the muffins produced the
opposite results.
I would encourage
everyone next time
there shopping
to pick up some
almond flour and
just give it a try!
You’ll be more
than pleasantly
surprised by the
tastiness, and all
the added health
benefits you
will gain from
introducing it into
your diet.
HEALTHY FOOD
HAVE YOU
HEARD ABOUT
We hope you'll be
hearing that a lot
the next couple of
months.
See, Earth is the new healthy eatery that
just opened in South Miami. We are new to
the neighborhood but hope to become an
important part of it by providing tasty, natural
meals to the South Miami community.
The idea behind the concept was birthed after
I realized how truly lacking we are in Miami
of places where we could eat organic and
fresh food fast, without spending a fortune
in high-end restaurants. Being Italian and
having grown up in France, I have always been
around cooking and everything was always
homemade in our house. I learned some key
recipes at a very young age thanks to my
Italian grandmothers, such as our delicious
pesto and tomato sauce, and how to pair
different ingredients to complement flavors.
Good food, natural ingredients, and variety
are crucial to a healthy diet.
Thanks to my background and knowledge of
nutrition, as well as the excellent skills and
motivation of our Executive Chef, Orlando
Martinez, Earth was able to finally open its
doors on September 8 th . We have been in full
development ever since, adding new special
dressings, juices, soups and satisfying the
taste buds of many local employees, students,
and families.
The concept was indeed created to allow
anyone to find a suitable meal option in our
menu, which is why our motto is “Real Food
for Every Body, Every Diet, Every Mood.”
Thanks to the “Create your Own” concept, I
can target the largest audience possible. With
the number of food allergies increasing, the
different types of diets, or simply preferences
of taste, I felt that the need to give freedom
of choice to my clients was essential to the
process. That way, each meal can be unique
and completely satisfy the needs and wants of
each of our customers. Whether you are vegan,
vegetarian, paleo, gluten-free, or simply follow
a traditional diet, Earth has a lot of options to
choose from!
“
I realized
how truly
lacking we are in
Miami of places
where we could
eat organic and
fresh food fast,
without spending
