PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
President Tonyboy Fernandez
T
he WIWAG was a success with
39 graduates from the different
Universities here and around
Northern Mindanao. I want to thank the
Rotarian facilitators, Dir Gus Rodano and
Rtn Rey Lomarda for a job well done.
The WIWAG workshop together with the
Bato Balani Foundation was held at the
HRM Building of Liceo de Cagayan University.
It was the turn of Liceo to host
this workshop. After the graduation , I
signed MOU’s with partner schools Cagayan
de Oro College , Capitol University ,
STI and Liceo de Cagayan University for
the continuance of this project next
school year. Testimonies of the students
made us feel good because the feedback
was very positive. Here’s hoping to another
round of workshops during the
term of PE Danny Empedrad . VP Juls
Dulfo , Dir Leony Quicoy , Rtn Ben Booc
and PE Danny were with us in the 3 day
workshop.
The Balubal Project is nearing it’s completion
and I would like to thank the
5
kind hearts of the Rotarians who donated
to make the project complete. We
received a total of P8,500 in cash to augment
the P 125,000.00 given by Rotary
International to renovate the Centre. To
date , we have renovated the dental
through , the walls , the ceiling , the 2
bathrooms , installed a water tank and
repaired the back portion of the centre
which needed cement plastering and
painting. PAG and Dir John Mark Sarraga
will advise us when we can turn this over
to the Barangay. I am hoping that
this will be done before the end of
March.
I am also requesting your assistance and
presence to the other additional projects
to be implemented this March. These
projects together with the Rotary Anns is
very worthwhile especially that it will be
a gift giving to abandoned children and
the second is the distribution of basic
necessities to the Old and mentally challenged
ordinary folks who are housed in
is the club’s generous heart
for unfortunate children. Last
meeting we discussed the near completion
of the Balubal Daycare classroom
renovation project and the php8,000
shortage in our funds for additional restoration
repairs.
However, in just 1 minute the club was
able to raise the amount. 10 Rotarians
and those who gave during the recognition
time open handedly pledged to the
project. I had to stop some members
from pledging because we instantly filled
up the shortage right after the call the
pledge!
EARTH DAY 2018 | END PLASTIC POLLUTION
10 Shocking Facts About Plastic Pollution
Source: https://www.earthday.org/
P
lastic pollution is killing our planet!
It’s choking our oceans, poisoning
our food and water supply,
and wreaking havoc on the health
and well-being of humans and wildlife
worldwide
Use these ten shocking facts about the
scope of plastic pollution to educate,
inspire and mobilize your friends, family,
coworkers and community to join the
movement to END PLASTIC POLLU-
TION this Earth Day.
FACT #1 8.3 BILLION Metric Tons
(9.1 BILLION US Tons) of plastic has
been produced since plastic was introduced
in the 1950s. The amount of plastic
produced in a year is roughly the
same as the entire weight of humanity.
FACT #2 Virtually every piece of
plastic that was ever made still exists in
some shape or form (with the exception
of the small amount that has been incinerated).
FACT #3 91% of plastic isn’t recycled.
And since most plastics don’t biodegrade
in any meaningful sense, all that
plastic waste could exist for hundreds or
even thousands of years.
FACT #4 500 MILLION plastic straws
are used EVERY DAY in America. That’s
enough to circle the Earth twice.
FACT #5 Nearly TWO MILLION single
-use plastic bags are distributed worldwide
every minute.
FACT #6 100 BILLION plastic bags
are used by Americans every year. Tied
together, they would reach around the
Earth’s equator 773 times!
FACT #7 ONE MILLION plastic bottles
are bought EVERY MINUTE around the
world — and that number will top half a
T
hree Rotary women were recognized
on 7 March at the World
Bank in Washington, D.C., USA,
for their commitment to improving lives
through innovative humanitarian projects.
The celebration, hosted by the World
Bank Group Staff Association, and sponsored
by Rotary International and investment
firm Oppenheimer & Co., was
one of many events held this week to
mark International Women's Day, which
is on 8 March each year. It highlighted
the positive changes women make
around the world. Annette Dixon, vice
president of the World Bank for South
Asia, moderated the event.
Speaking to more than 300 people, with
thousands watching the livestream, Dr.
Geetha Jayaram, Marie-Irène Richmond
Ahoua, and Danielle De La Fuente, all
Rotarians, told their stories and explained
how their work helped poor
women in India gain access to mental
health care, vaccinate hundreds of thousands
against polio in West Africa, and
empower refugee children around the
world.
"These are women of action who are
making a huge contribution to the
world," Dixon said. "They have given a
lot of themselves to their initiatives and
are playing a leadership role for many
women."
Jayaram, a member of the Rotary Club
of Howard West, Maryland, USA, and a
recipient of the Rotary Global Alumni
Service to Humanity Award, told the audience
that her mental health clinic has
provided nearly 2,000 poor people,
mostly women, each year with comprehensive
care in more than 200 villages in
12

southern India.
The Maanasi Clinic, founded by Jayaram,
has been recognized by the World
Health Organization for its effort to advance
mental health care in developing
countries. Its services also focus on vision,
hearing, geriatric care, and vocational
rehabilitation. The clinic, which
operates in partnership with St. John's
Medical College, has received funding
from the Rotary Club of Columbia, Maryland,
and Rotary grants. In total, the
clinic has reached nearly six million
households since it began in 2002.
"I never expected I would feel so fulfilled
and gratified by these women who
have so little, who will welcome you in
their home and share their most intimate
details of their lives," Jayaram
said. "That is a large gift to me and our
workers."
Jayaram is an associate
professor of psychiatry
and behavioural sciences
at the Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine
in Baltimore, Maryland,
USA.
13
Marie-Irène Richmond-
Ahoua, a member of the
Rotary Club of Abidjan-
Bietry, Côte d’Ivoire,
served as Rotary’s Polio-
Plus chair for her country
and now helps coordinate
immunization activities in
West Africa. She is an international
communications consultant
and worked as an outreach adviser for
the United Nations Operation in Côte
d’Ivoire.
Richmond-Ahoua was recognized by Bill
Gates at the 2017 Rotary Convention in
Atlanta for her role in polio eradication
and peace.
"Volunteering has brought me much
happiness, and some tears. It has allowed
me to see the world through different
lenses," Richmond-Ahoua said.
"We must believe in what we are doing
regardless of the challenges we will
face."
She adds: "And my greatest reward? The
smile of a mother after her childr has
just been immunized."
Dr. Geetha Jayaram, a member of the Rotary Club of Howard West,
Maryland, USA, addresses mental health issues for poor women in
developing countries.

Anns’ Corner
By: President Angelie Mae Dael
M
arch 8 was a remarkable
GMM for the Rotary Anns as
we celebrated International
Women’s Day. Through history, a number
of brave women have endeavored to
break barriers set on our gender, and
they paved the way for us to enjoy certain
rights we have today. The Rotary
Anns salute all these women and remain
steadfast in pushing for progress in gender
parity.
We had the pleasure of a visit from Ann
PP Rose Sawadjaan, who served as our
Ann President in RY 1990-91. She was
reunited with her Ann VP, Nanay Nitz
Evangelista and other contemporaries.
Ann PP Rose complimented the Anns
upon seeing more young faces and a
vibrant camaraderie evident in the GMM.
We hope to see her again during our
70th Anniversary.
We congratulate the duly elected new
Finally , May I request your support to
the Council of Presidents for Zone 1’s
Peace and Conflct. As members of the
Rotary Clubs of zone 1 District 3870 ,
we are enjoined to attend the Peace
WOMEN, from p. 13
Danielle De La Fuente, a member of the
Rotary Club of Coronado Binacional, California,
USA, is co-founder of The Amal
Alliance. The nonprofit group empowers
refugee children around the world
through social development and educational
programs. She worked at the National
Defense University in Washington,
D.C., where she fostered good relations
across the Middle East South Asia.
De La Fuente told the audience that 65
million people have been forcibly displaced
worldwide, 77 percent of whom
are children. "Imagine a world where
children have no dreams," De La Fuente
said. "That is a reality I choose not to
accept."
"The need for compassionate people has
never been greater than now," she adds.
"What is our future if our next generation
is unable to dream? I call on all of
you to take action and make a difference."
POLLUTION, from p. 09
TRILLION by 2021. Less than half of
those bottles end up getting recycled.
FACT #8 8 MILLION TONS of plastic
winds up in our oceans each year. That’s
enough trash to cover every foot of
coastline around the world with five full
trash bags of plastic…
compounding every year.
FACT #9 There is more microplastic
in the ocean than there are stars in the
Milky Way.
FACT #10 If plastic production isn’t
curbed, plastic pollution with outweigh
fish pound for pound by 2050.
through Christ who
gives me strength."
EVERY ROTARIAN AN EXAMPLE
TO YOUTH
I
n much of the official literature of
Rotary International relating to service
to young people, a special slogan
will be found – ―Every Rotarian an
Example to Youth.‖ These words were
adopted in 1949 by the Rotary International
Board of Directors as an expression
of commitment to children and
youth in each community in which Rotary
clubs exist. Serving young people has
long been an important part of the Rotary
program.
Youth service projects take many forms
around the world. Rotarians sponsor Boy
Scout and Girl Scout troops, athletic
teams, centers for disabled children,
school safety patrols, summer camps,
recreation areas, safe driving clinics,
county fairs, child care centers and children’s
hospitals. Many clubs provide vocational
counseling, establish youth employment
programs and promote use of
the Four-Way Test. Increasingly, drug
and alcohol abuse prevention and AIDS
awareness projects are being supported
by Rotarians. In every instance, Rotarians
have an opportunity to be role
models for the young men and women
of their community. One learns to
serve by observing others. As our
youth grow to become adult leaders, it
is hoped each will achieve that same
desire and spirit to serve future generations
of children and youth. The slogan
accepted over 60 years ago is just
as vital today.
It is a very thoughtful challenge:
―Every Rotarian an Example to Youth.‖
AMO: Yaya magluto kana pag alis ko ha.
