The purpose of the competition is to generate ideas that will lead to urban improvement detailed projects as well as public and/or private interventions. These will help each area foster a better identity while at the same time improve the area’s connection and interrelation with all of its surroundings. The competition for southern coastal strip and its close settlements stems from the need to improve the urban condition and the use of the touristic area along the strip, as well as the connections that link the coastal strip to the new and old settlements nearby. The coastal strip is a national asset serving to all local and international tourists. It cuts through many small cities and in this perspective the whole country is the beneficiary, while the communities along the strip and the inhabitants of the old and new settlements will be direct beneficiaries. There is a need to extend the touristic season in order to generate more sustainable income for the region.

imara being the main locality between Vlora and Saranda takes<br />
a primary role in the general proposal for the Southern Albania<br />
<strong>Riviera</strong>. The city is able to welcome more visitors than the nearby<br />
areas and it has the potential to become a service hub for the region.<br />
For these reasons the intervention in Himara is proposed to be more<br />
substantial. The proposal intends to create not only a new image for<br />
the city waterfront but it aims to improve significantly the quality of the<br />
public space. A new circulation scheme allows most of the waterfront to<br />
be car-free. This pedestrian promenade creates a solution of continuity<br />
for the three beaches of the city. The visitors are accompanied along the<br />
promenade by the linear pine tree park, smaller urban parks and a system<br />
of steps that not only allows the natural connection between the city<br />
and the sea but also creates smaller plazas and spaces to stop along the<br />
beach. The promenade after crossing the new pier, branches off towards<br />
the northern end of the city leading from one side to the reorganized and<br />
extended harbor which can welcome visitors from the sea thanks to the<br />
new terminal. On the second branch, the linear park brings the visitors<br />
uphill, through the new sports center, to the historical city and the castle.<br />
The reconstructed square recreates the Mediterranean atmosphere and<br />
opens new panoramas towards the sea.<br />
