The purpose of the competition is to generate ideas that will lead to urban improvement detailed projects as well as public and/or private interventions. These will help each area foster a better identity while at the same time improve the area’s connection and interrelation with all of its surroundings. The competition for southern coastal strip and its close settlements stems from the need to improve the urban condition and the use of the touristic area along the strip, as well as the connections that link the coastal strip to the new and old settlements nearby. The coastal strip is a national asset serving to all local and international tourists. It cuts through many small cities and in this perspective the whole country is the beneficiary, while the communities along the strip and the inhabitants of the old and new settlements will be direct beneficiaries. There is a need to extend the touristic season in order to generate more sustainable income for the region.

Territorial strategies<br />
RESOURCES, VALUES & ACTIONS<br />
National Park of Llogara<br />
Values: special landscape and natural values , the only real National Park in<br />
Albania (defining the existing boundaries). Actions: block of new buildings<br />
development, demolition of abusive buildings along the national street<br />
(especially: buildings on ridges) elimination of sheep-farming, reforestation,<br />
protection of the autochthonous pine tree, Pisha Flamur.<br />
Reserve of Karaburun<br />
Values: wild and untouched landscape, absence of fencing (re-define the<br />
actual boundary). Actions: elimination of sheep-farming and of the practice<br />
of burning the pastures, plan of reforestation necessary for shading.<br />
Wetland area/ the Lagoon of Orikum<br />
Values: exceptional environmental values, migration of avifauna in the area<br />
and compared with the wetland network of the Mediterranean (zoomed<br />
out ecosystem) mapping of the existing and old boundaries. Actions:<br />
demolition of the coastal street next to Orikum, reduce the military base<br />
and excluding the archaeological area from it (and including it in the park),<br />
recover the church of Marmiru (including it in the park).<br />
Karaburun<br />
Caves and bays in the peninsula of Karaburun with access only from<br />
the sea water touristic services from the existing Marina Harbour of the<br />
Orikum that passes through all the caves and bays with small and medium<br />
sized boats Use of the are of Karaburun during the whole year: -Hunting<br />
(October-January), rally with 2 or 4 routes (February-March), hiking,<br />
alpinism, extreme sports (March-September), diving and snorkeling almost<br />
during the whole year.<br />
Old Tragjas<br />
VALUES: Positive traditional elements, the connection of the old Tragjas<br />
with other parts of <strong>Riviera</strong> and the new Tragjas . ACTIONS: Ultra Light<br />
Intervention - for the objects of particular values for touristic scopes<br />
and Light Interventions: An experiment of the process of Public-Private<br />
Urban Transformation Society. Diffused hotel with plural property ( in<br />
one side are the old property owners which gather there once a year. The<br />
Municipality takes part in the management of the hotels.<br />
