Blade Runner hits theaters
ISABELLA GOODMAN
Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to the
1982 cult classic Blade Runner, hit theaters
on October 3.
The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve,
stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford
and picks up thirty years after the original
movie left off. Blade Runner 2049 follows
Gosling, a replicant Blade Runner named
K, and his journey to uncover a secret
with ties to Rick Deckard, played by Ford,
who has been missing in the thirty years
since the first movie.
Big Mouth explores the difficulty of teenage life
SOPHIA HENRY
Staff Writer
Big Mouth, the fresh new Netflix show,
is making headway as it comedically
displays the awkward stages of puberty
through the eyes of three best friends
in middle school with the help of their
Hormone Monsters. The show includes
the female point of view as the Hormone
Monstress supports the girl lead Jessi
through her complications at the Statue of
Liberty in Episode Two. The show brings
a childish humor to the embarrassing
consequences puberty brings and gives
an upbeat quirkiness with the ghost of
Duke Ellington, a well known composer,
pianist, and bandleader of a jazz orchestra,
giving the middle schoolers advice in
Nick’s attic.
The group of friends experience their
first relationships and social anxieties as
romantic feelings begin to arise in the
middle schoolers lives. There is not one
episode a person cannot relate to as we
have all gone through the awkwardness
of puberty. The Hormone Monsters offer
terrible advice to the young kids, and
their parents are unable to understand the
middle schoolers social struggles.
The episodes consist of silliness and
ridiculous situations. The teachers try to
guide the students through their problems;
however, it seems the only people sane
enough to help are the kids themselves.
The comedy animates adolescent children
struggling to understand their urges to feel
accepted and noticed.
Big Mouth is voiced over by comedians
Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, and Jessi Mulaney.
The show has gotten great feedback
and high ratings on Netflix. It incorporates
almost the same humor as American Dad
and Family Guy through physical jokes.
I highly recommend giving the show a
watch.
Hello, welcome to another segment of
Young and Hungry. This month I will be
talking about ACL eats.
If you went to ACL but didn’t hit up the
food trucks, I’m sorry for your loss. Major
RIP. The food was by far the highlight
of the festival. Honestly, the main reason
I went to ACL anyway. There were 40
food trucks on sight at the festival such
as Chil’antro, Amy’s Ice Cream, Austin’s
Pizza, and Torchey’s, just to name a few.
Some of the top foods people enjoyed
were miniature pizzas, Kimchi fries, brisket
nachos, and mango smoothies. Patrick
Bayouth wanted these so highly talked
about nachos that he “spent one whole
hour searching for them because I tried
someone’s and they were so good.”
Another plus to the food trucks was the
cashless payment. You could put your
credit card on your wristband to make
food purchases more convenient. This
made spending money on the food a lot
easier, amd mever let anyone be hungry or
unsatisfied.
Gabrielle Ducote said, “I have never
consumed so much pizza in my life,”
made possible by the cashless payments.
My personal favorite was the Chil’antro
chicken tacos. They were some of the best
tacos I have ever eaten because of the
freshness and all the sauces.
I hope everyone got to try at least one
of these delicacies. Till next month. Isabel
Blade Runner 2049 does what all sequels
hope to do: it maintains the sanctity of the
original while still forging its own path.
The acting is also incredible. Gosling
plays a multifaceted character who tries to
understand his humanity while not human,
and Ford does a great job at unearthing the
gruff and over-it Deckard. The supporting
cast is also well done, from the virtual
Ana De Armas to the police chief Robin
Wright and Jared Leto, the successor to
the Tyrell Corp. founder.
2049 pushes on the technology of the
future where the original could not. From
the replicants of the 1980s to virtual reality
and holographic people, Blade Runner
2049 pushes viewers to contemplate the
technology around them that is advancing
at incredible paces. Dennis Villeneuve’s
presence is clear, like Arrival (2016). Villeneuve
showcases sweeping aerial shots,
and he basically makes color a character
in both movies. He combines this stylistic
choice with the neo-noir style of the original
movie, where the future is chaotic,
busy, and heavily backed by neon lighting.
Blade Runner was not a box-office hit
by any means, and neither is Blade Runner
2049. It took a while for the film to
become a cult classic, so it makes sense
that despite good reviews, Blade Runner
2049 did not do exceptionally well.
In Ridley Scott’s original, there was
not much dialogue and instead featured
voiceover from Ford, which was later
scrutinized. Blade Runner 2049, in a
similar fashion, is short on the dialogue,
but they opted for a score by Hans Zimmer
rather than a Gosling voiceover. This
might not be the most reassuring thing for
viewers, as the runtime for the movie is
nearly three hours.
Ultimately, Blade Runner 2049 will
most likely take the same path as its
predecessor. While it was not a huge hit,
it will probably claim cult classic status. I
encourage everyone to see it.
