McCain, 21, of 1055 Abott Lane in University Park, was charged March 7 with driving on a suspended/revoked driver’s license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and driver and passenger safety belt violations. According to police reports, an officer on patrol at westbound Lincoln Highway observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Wolf Road with no front registration plates. The officer got behind the vehicle and checked the rear registration plate, which came back as the registered owner having a suspended driver’s license. The officer initiated a traffic stop. McCain, who was driving the vehicle, was reportedly initially unable to produce any identification but identified herself as “Vera” to the officer. The officer reportedly advised McCain to try and find anything to confirm her identity, and while she was looking through her purse, the officer could see an Illinois identification card. The officer then advised McCain that trying to conceal her identity is a crime, and Mc- Cain produced the ID. A check of the ID found that McCain’s license was suspended and she was placed under arrest. McCain then reportedly told the officer that there was a baby who was not hers in the backseat of the vehicle. According to the report, the office discovered a 22-month-old baby wrapped in a blanket, not secured by any safety belt or car seat. The baby was secured until the mother was able to come and pick him up from the Mokena police department. March 4 • Zarifa Sabah, 43, of 19149 Weber Road in Mokena, was charged with driving on a suspended/revoked driver’s license and speeding. According to police reports, an officer on patrol driving westbound on La Porte Road observed a vehicle traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. The officer reportedly clocked the vehicle with a dash-mounted radar gun going 47 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer then got behind the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. According to the report, Sabah was unable to produce a driver’s license and told the officer that she did not have one, which was confirmed by a check of her driver’s license status. Because of personnel changes, shifting and retirements made by the Board of Education, the district is anticipating that its payroll and benefit expenses are down by about $153,000 with these positions added to next year’s budget. Boiler project bid approved Also at the meeting, the board authorized a payment of $186,600 to Monaco Mechanical for work to be performed on a Hilda Walker Intermediate School boiler project. The District has enlisted the assistance of the Tria Architecture to address building facilities needs. A full bid scope review of the contractor, Monaco Mechanical, showed that they are in good standing, according to references, searches and a check of state licensing. Tria Architecture did not find any reason to raise concern over the project bid. “Out of the vetting process, we did talk to three references,” said Nick Graal, senior staff architect for Tria Architecture. “Two were good, and one had a negative comment about change orders. We didn’t feel that it was enough to throw out that bid and go to the next bid. It’s just something that we, as the design team/the district architect, will have to watch out for. We fully vet any and all change order requests to see the validity. Being that that comment did come back, it’s on our radar, for sure.” In a 7-0 vote, board action contractually obligates the contractor to fulfill its end of the deal. The contract stipulates that Monaco Mechanical is responsible for related damage, should it arise.
