How did you get started as a goalie? I didn’t really start playing goalie until my freshman year. I just decided to do it because I wasn’t the strongest swimmer, but I played softball for nine years, so I had a strong arm and that helps a lot. Looking to have a garage sale this year? What’s something from water polo that you could take away as a life lesson? I would say definitely the teamwork aspect of it. Water polo is not a one person-type sport. The whole team has a hand in it. Without everyone together, you’re not going to achieve anything. What are your expectations this season? Caroline [Heathcock] and I see a lot of pressure [being the only seniors] to do well, but I think everyone on the team feels the same way. A lot of our team is really talented, so I think we’re going to do really well this season, despite having only two seniors. What’s your favorite memory in water polo? Last year, we played Lincoln-Way East three times, and each time we were down a couple points, but in the fourth quarter we always managed to beat them at the last minute. They were all super close games, and they’re a super talented team, so it was always nice to play them. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from coach Pam Dettman? She works really hard to allow us to be successful later in life when we’re applying for jobs or doing normal, adult things. It’s a really big deal to her that we’re punctual. Even if we’re a few minutes late to practice, she gets really upset, and you learn your lesson after that because you do extra laps or extra stuff in the weight room. Who’s your favorite teammate? I’m going to have to go with Caroline Heathcock because we’ve been best friends forever, since second Photo Submitted grade. We both started playing water polo at the same time together. If you could own an exotic pet, what would it be? A monkey because they seem so sweet, they’re smart, and they’re so cute. If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be? Somebody really famous. I would say Beyoncé because she’s so powerful. She’s Beyoncé, she’s amazing. What’s your splurge post-game meal be? Mac and cheese with as much cheese as possible. At that point, the Bulldogs called a time out and settled in on defense, only allowing one goal in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Bruno banged home a pair of goals in the second quarter, including one from near the middle line with 28 seconds left in the half. That cut the Central lead to 5-2 as Cales crammed a goal in between the Bruno scores. “Obviously it’s too early to tell,” Dettman said of this years team being as good as last seasons squad. “But we have fast girls that stepped up. They’re learning.” That was pretty evident as this second game was a lot better that the opener. That was on March 8, when the Knights slipped past St. Charles North 9-8 in sudden death overtime. The game was knotted at 8-8 after two overtime sessions, but Central tallied on a man-up situation in the next, sudden death period. Cales and sophomore Madi Jager added scored three goals for the Knights during the March 8 matchup. “I think we had some first-game jitters,” Cales said. “But [against R-B], we played confident. We had great positioning and played a lot better of a game. We were clean on defense.” The Knights went on to beat Bremen, 13-2 on Thursday, March 15. They followed up with a 2-1 mark at the Naperville North Tournament as they lost to the Hosts. 12-6 and recovered to beat Neuqua Valley, 11-2 and New Trier, 6-3. This week featured the SouthWest Suburban Conference opener on Tuesday, March 20 against visiting Sandburg. They are in another strong tournament on Saturday, March 24 starting at 8 a.m. at the Lyons Township Invite.
