SPECIAL EVENTS<br />
• BOOK SALE - The Friends of the Maud Marks Library will hold their<br />
next book sale on Saturday, <strong>April</strong> 28 th at 10 AM until 4 PM. There is<br />
a large selection of hardback fiction and nonfiction, as well as children’s<br />
books and paperbacks. All proceeds will benefit the library.<br />
• CELEBRATE LOCAL ARTISTS - At the library, we love everything<br />
about our Katy community… including our local artists. This <strong>April</strong>,<br />
we have decided it is time to celebrate them! The entire month<br />
of <strong>April</strong>, local artists will be exhibiting their work throughout the<br />
library. Meet the artists at our opening reception on Saturday, <strong>April</strong><br />
7 th at 6-8 PM. Come view their paintings and sculptures and get an<br />
idea of the viewpoints of our local fine artists. Also, come learn from<br />
them and all about them. Local artists will be teaching their crafts<br />
at our adult DIY workshop, Wednesday Wonders and Teen Makers.<br />

• VOLUNTEER AT THE LIBRARY - Volunteer opportunities abound<br />
at the library. Volunteers are needed to help shelve, count patrons<br />
and more. We will be holding our next volunteer orientation on<br />
Thursday, <strong>April</strong> 5 th at 5 PM. Students should be in high school and<br />
must be able to commit to two hours a week. If you would like to<br />
help in any way, please contact Elizabeth Herndon at 281-492-8592.<br />
• TEENMAKERS - Teens & tweens in 6 th grade and up are invited<br />
to come MAKE something at the library. This will be a monthly<br />
program, which will include robotics, science experiments, art &<br />
crafts and more! This month, on Thursday, <strong>April</strong> 5 th at 3:30 PM, a<br />
local artist will be here to help us create our own work of art. This<br />
is a ticketed program. Tickets will be available 30 minutes prior to<br />
the program. Come have fun and MAKE something!<br />
• CHESS WARS - Teens and tweens are invited to join us for Chess<br />
Wars! You played during the summer, now play during the school<br />
year! Join us Tuesdays at 4:45 PM as we battle it out on the chessboard.<br />
Come learn basic strategies and techniques to up your chess<br />
game so you too can play “out of this world.”<br />
• TEEN BOOK CLUB - We have started a teen book club! Teens are<br />
invited to join us on Thursday, <strong>April</strong> 19 th at 4:30 PM as we discuss<br />
the All Fall Down by Ally Carter. If you are interested in joining us,<br />
extra copies of the book are available at the checkout desk.<br />
• FREE TAX ASSISTANCE - Every Monday and Friday through<br />
<strong>April</strong> 16 th , AARP will be offering free tax assistance to elderly and<br />
low-income individuals. AARP assistance runs from 10 AM to 2 PM.<br />
• YOGA DEMONSTRATION - You asked for it, you got it! The library<br />
hosts classes twice a month. Yoga can be a very relaxing and<br />
centering exercise program. Join us on Saturdays, <strong>April</strong> 7 th at<br />
10 AM and <strong>April</strong> 21 st at 3 PM, as we learn about the benefits and<br />
basic how-to of yoga. Join us as we exercise our minds and bodies.<br />

• DIY CRAFTS: CELEBRATE LOCAL ARTISTS - Make your very own<br />
masterpiece! Join us on Tuesday, <strong>April</strong> 10 th at 2 PM as we welcome<br />
a local artist for an artist talk and workshop. Learn how to make<br />
your very own masterpiece. Seating for this is extremely limited.<br />
• KATY MAKERSPACE - Did you know that the Katy area has its very<br />
own MakerSpace? We’ll be learning all about this special place for<br />
creators and inventors at the library on Tuesday, <strong>April</strong> 10 th at 7<br />
PM. Harry Krueger will be here to give us an introduction to Katy<br />
MakerSpace and all you can do there. Makers of all ages and disciplines<br />
are encouraged to join us as we learn everything our new<br />
MakerSpace has to offer.<br />
• GREEN THUMB GARDENING - Master Gardeners of Harris County<br />
will once again be bringing their Green Thumb series once a month<br />
where they will discuss various topics unique to gardening in the<br />
Houston area. This month, on <strong>April</strong> 14 th at 10:30 AM, learn all about<br />
soils and compusting. Seating is extremely limited for this class.<br />
• WRITERS’ WORKSHOP WITH THE HOUSTON WRITERS GUILD<br />
- Saturday, <strong>April</strong> 14 th at 1 PM. A hands-on multi-part workshop<br />
to learn tips of the trade from expert writers from The Houston<br />
Writers Guild. They will provide instruction to all writers at every<br />
level. Today’s topic is Conflict that Deepens Tension. In this session,<br />
participants will explore how different types of conflicts can help<br />
build tension in their work. Explore the overall conflict ARC of your<br />
work and then discover ways to deepen critical scenes with conflict.<br />
