About Tedx
x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized
events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event,
TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection.
These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently
organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx
program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and
regulations.)
About TEDxED
TEDxED events are a special type of TEDx event that has the focus on education – in
the broadest possible sense.
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as
a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its
mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s
leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are
then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane
Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck,
Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia,
along with the TEDActive simulcast event in nearby Whistler. The annual TEDGlobal
conference will be held this October in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Hi there!
We’re delighted you have joined us for TEDxNorwichED – the only TEDxEducation event in the
whole of Europe in 2018!
In 201, hosted the first large scale TEDxED event in the UK for over 4 years, and the first TEDx
event in Norfolk for 5 years, and asked one simple question- What would happen if we thought
different about education. In 2017, we returned, bigger and better than ever, with the question
‘How can we inspire all generations?’. Both years, people attended – both physically and online
from across the UK and even further afield, and the buzz following the event was substantial.
We were trending on twitter for most of the day both years, and in 2017 had over 250,000
tweets and re-tweets about us on the event day. Last year, we had over 10,000 people join us
virtually on-line via our live stream, and the videos from our events have gone on to be viewed
over 500,000 times and many projects and collaborations have started as a direct result of
attending TEDxNorwichED.
So, we are back for 2018. This years theme came straight out of last years
event- DREAM BIG!
The event has been planned without an agenda – it is not designed to
attach, criticise or indeed promote a one way of doing things.
As amazing as our speakers will hopefully be, the most important
part of the event is YOU. You are part of a diverse and wideranging
audience – who are all here because they are interested
in education. Please do make the most of the networking and
discussion opportunities that are going to be weaved through
the day – share your thoughts, contribute and make some
magical connections!
But, it’s more than just today – we want the conversation
to continue and for this event to make a real impact, and
we’ll be sharing ways and ideas with you throughout the
day of how we help to make sure this happens, and that
this event is more than just a ‘nice day in Norwich’.
TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the
Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well
as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed.
TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a
wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which
supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events
around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators
from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and
activities.
We are always striving for excellence, and would
love to hear your feedback – so we hope you will
share your ideas and chat with us throughout the
day about your experiences so far, what you have
loved and how we can make things even better
– all feedback is a gift, so we do hope you will
share your thoughts with us! You can also reach
the team via email on
hello@tedxnorwiched.com.
So, hold on tight – it’s going
to be a great ride.
We’re excited to get
started – are you?
You are part of
something amazing.
About the Team
The TEDxNorwichED organizing team is made
up of a group of probably slightly crazy people
– all passionate about education. 2 of us work in
leadership positions in schools, but we have taken
the time and commitment to organize the event
outside of our ‘day job’ and as such the event is not
linked, or endorsed, in any way by our employers.
We are not organising this event for any credit,
recognition or praise – which is the reason that we
have kept our names out of the limelight as far as
we can.
Congratulations- by joining us today, you are part of an amazing
movement of like minded people.
By joining us today, you will be part of our journey as continue
the conversation- and spark new ones- about Education in its
broadest sense, which is not limited by any perceived restraints.
You will join us as we share ideas, share inspiration, and dream
big together.
You will be joining us as we explore how we can inspire people
to dream big dreams, to dream outside the box.
You are joining our community as we search for the dreams that
define us and our education system, and answer the question
how we can get people ready to pursue their dreams.
You will join the discussions about how we can spark imagination,
invention and ingenuity, and how we can help people become
catalysts for change.
You are joining us as we look at what our tomorrow looks like,
and what could happen in education if we allowed ourselves to
dream big.
Our Host
GRANT HINDS
Grant has spent the last 10 years working
within both traditional and social media
identifying ways to increase engagement
rates and working on strategies to
optimise views. Grant ensures he keeps
abreast of the latest developments
as algorithms are evolving constantly,
ensuring he can offer relevant and
practical advice to companies, enabling
them to increase their engagement rates
across online platforms.
The views expressed in the talks you hear and the
experiences you take part in today are those of
the speakers, and do not necessarily represent our
views. We have selected speakers and experiences
to give an exciting and broad range – after all if we
had picked speakers that we all fully agree with it
would have been boring!
have something special
prepared just for you!
Water will always be
available in the atrium
WiFi
There is free WiFi throughout the
venue – the access details are
below:-
SSID:-
Password:-
Your seats.
Our volunteers will help guide you to a seat when you first enter the
auditorium. This seat is yours for the rest of the day. We ask everyone
to leave the auditorium at each break, but please feel free to leave any
coats/bags etc (at your own risk).
Please do return to your initial seat after each break.
Sadly, access to power is very limited, so it is
unlikely you will be able to charge any devices
during the day. Please do not plug anything into
any sockets in the main auditorium – all of these
are linked, in some way, to our production and
technical systems – and it’d be awful if these
suddenly had a power surge and were shut off!
BIG DREAMS Zone
The auditorium program is only just the beginning.
During our breaks (and pre event) please do take time
to experience our BIG DREAMS zone which has taken
over the rest of our amazing venue. In it, you will find
lots of experience for you to take part in, which will
complement and go beyond the auditorium program.
Amongst many other things, you’ll get to experience
some amazing wellbeing activities, and virtual realtiy,
courtesy of Avia, have fun with Twinkl, be a big kid and
take part in a gaming competition with BTO Talent, have
fun with your voice with Voice 21, explore the power of
physical learning with SuperMovers and get your hands
on some amazing wellbeing tips with Bloomsbury.
There are many exciting competitions and challenges
(with fantastic prizes) going on in the different
rooms, and many different goodies for you to
take away (everyone loves a freebie!) so
be sure to check them all out with
your fellow attendees. You can
find the Big Dreams zone
in the Bue, Orange and
Yellow spaces.
Bookshop
We believe that reading is vital – both for children and
adults – so we are also delighted to have our very own book
shop. In it, you will find a whole range of books – including ones
written by some of our speakers and books that may help you
think differently about education. You’ll also find a good selection
of outstanding children’s books and ‘grown-up’ fiction as well
(although, children’s books often better!) and each of our speakers
have suggested some books too! So please do check it out and
pick up your next read! Thank you to the amazing Norfolk Children’s
Book Centre for providing our bookshop.
Be Part of the Conversation .
The talks and experiences today are just the start!
Social Media
We want to take social media by storm
today! Last year, we trended in the top
10 on twitter in the UK for 4 hours. So
please tweet, Instagram and Facebook
away – using the #tedxnorwiched – we
hope to see some amazing conversations
and ideas and thoughts being shared
online!
Tweet Challenge
We’d also like to set you a little challenge!
At some point today, tweet a message
containing 4 pictures and 4 words, with
the #tedx norwichED that shares your
experience. We will select the best 2
tweets at the end of the day, and they
will each win a £10 Amazon voucher.
To be eligible for the competition, you
must include at least 2 photos from BIG
DREAMS zone.
Please do take the
opportunity today to talk
to people around you- and
we have put plenty of time
in the programme to allow
you to network and discuss.
We want discussions to flow
-especially during our breaks –
for connections to be made and
ideas and crazy thoughts to hatch!
Why not challenge yourself to speak
to 8 people today that you didn’t
already know before you came?
On most people’s pass is their name, and
also a prompt that can be used to help
kick-start a conversation!
Remember that there is another
audience watching today – we are
live-streaming all of our sessions
to a global audience.
Principal Partners
Thank
YOU!
Of course, putting on an event on this scale doesn’t just happen by itself,
and we have a lot of people that we need to say a big thank you to!
Volunteers
60 AMAZING people have volunteered their time to help make
TEDxNorwichED run as smoothly as possible – right from the people
who helped you park this morning and our welcome team to our stage
manager and AV technicians, everyone has given their time freely. They
are easy to spot – they are the ones in the TEDxNorwichED T-Shirts!
Without them, this couldn’t have happened – so a massive THANK YOU
to all our wonderful volunteers.
Amazing additions We are also lucky to be working with some amazing
people. Dan Shakes (www.shaakedesigns.co.uk) has been responsible
for all of our wonderful graphic design. Dan and Jo from White Label
Media (www.wlms-ltd.co.uk) have taken care of all of our filming needs.
Rebecca Osbourne is the wonderful person you’ll see scribbling away at
the front – taking graphic recordings of each session.
Partners
Our event couldn’t have happened without the kind support of our
partners – who have donated time, money and/or services to help us
put on the event. They do this for very little reward. You will see pages
written by most of our partners throughout the brochure, but we’d like
to also publicly acknowledge them here too!
The Space is Norfolk’s best conference centre for
business and training events. We help our clients
deliver successful and effective events across
a range of versatile spaces for events and
meetings.
Our venue is flexible, our staff are helpful, skilled and friendly and our competitive
prices include free parking and wi-fi. As a social enterprise, we provide young
people and long term unemployed people with opportunities for skill development
and work experience and all profits go to charitable causes. We never tire of
hearing how our staff go above and beyond to make an event a success.
Features and Benefits
• Free Parking – one less thing to worry
about when attending an event
• Free Wi-Fi – because all our guests need
to get online
• Professional – we are a business
venue so you won’t bump into a hotel guest
returning to their room from the gym
• Competitively priced – because
everyone is working to a budget
• Versatile/flexible – neutral decoration
and no fixed furniture so you can make your
own mark on each of our spaces.
• Central Atrium – our simple layout
means you won’t lose delegates down miles
of corridors
• Discreet/Private – we won’t publicise
your attendance without prior permission
and you won’t run into members of the
public
Social Enterprise
The Space is owned and operated by a local church called Proclaimers. All profits
generated are reinvested into charitable causes which have a positive impact on the
local community and further afield in Europe and other parts of the world.
Our social aims extend to the way that we operate our venue, in particular staffing. We
seek to provide opportunities for young people to develop skills for the workplace
through volunteering and work experience. We work with partner organisations to
provide apprenticeship, work experience and employment opportunities for young
people who have struggled with mainstream education for a variety of reasons.
We are currently working with local schools and colleges to promote
entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship and are active participants in forward
thinking educational projects.
We are working hard to bring more of the
curriculum outside— Art, Maths, English, Science
and Geography all leap comfortably into outdoor
spaces, be it creating poetry under the canopy
of a sycamore, to digging under the ground to
test the acidity of the soil. Behaviour improves
and different characters emerge. In one session
recently, one child kept exclaiming “oh, I’ve
never done this before” so often it became a
catchphrase.
For some schools, shelter from the weather is a priority. Although the
phrase “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing” is generally
true, children can cope with about sixty minutes of wet weather before
starting to struggle. Children should, at the very least, be armed with coats
to stave off wet or windy weather, and teachers can ask for a Welly Collection
from parents— paired with beefy bulldog clips for hanging soggy gear.
Imagine the scene—your Head comes in, looking harassed. The Government has
ordered that all pupils should spend a minimum of 10% of their curriculum time
outdoors, and PE is not to be included in this calculation.
What would be your first thought? That you don’t have enough space? What
could you do with them? What would happen to the learning? What about rain?
As the Curriculum Enrichment Leader of a small Primary Academy Trust in west
London, this is a long term aim of ours. All three schools are in built-up areas,
and we have worked hard to begin developing our outdoor spaces to make
them more curriculum-friendly.
All the evidence points to children spending less and less time outside, with
74% of children spending less than an hour playing outside each day. This contrasts
with UN guidelines that prisoners have the right to one hour’s outdoor
exercise each day as a minimum.
If you have no outside shelters (either manmade or natural), buy a gazebo
sail and find the funds to have three posts put up— these work perfectly.
You could even look on websites like Freegle for actual windsails (we got
four this way).
The first approach to taking more lessons outside starts with a good look
at the timetable for the week. Look at the lessons which absolutely have
to be taught indoors, and cross them off. Next, consider the lessons which
would be enhanced by using outdoor spaces, although often just a change of
scene can reinvigorate a class, make your outdooring more than simply this.
Finding isosceles triangles in nature is ridiculously more interesting than a
worksheet and greater depth can easily occur with protractors. Collecting
and measuring leaf angles will position the memory far more successfully
than the lesson you would carry out inside a classroom.
Try it, just for a week. Find two lessons which would zing by happening
outside, then make the leap. You won’t look back.
20
So why are we such advocates of outdoor learning? Being outside brings a
multitude of benefits— children are able to concentrate for longer, ask more
questions, and are more engaged with their learning when outdoors.
Stephen Lockyer is the Curriculum Enrichment Leader of the
Lumen Learning Trust in outer west London, where new staff are
issued with fleeces as part of their welcome package.
For millions of years, mankind lived like animals. Then
something happened which unleashed the power of
our imagination. We learned to talk and we learned to
listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas,
enabling human beings to work together to build the
impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come
about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking.
It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could
become reality in the future. With the technology at our
disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need
to do is make sure we keep talking.”
To dream big...we must be able to work together, share our
ideas and interact with those of others. In short, we need to get
talking! Let’s make our schools places where oracy is taught,
celebrated and valued, ensuring our young people are equipped
with the vital communication skills they need to succeed in
school and in life.
Established in 2015, Voice 21 trains, inspires and supports state
schools to teach spoken communication, dialogue and public
speaking to all students and campaigns for oracy to have higher
status in our education system. To find out more about our
Proclaimers is a 21st Century Church
that aims to reach people with the lifechanging
message of Jesus, have a positive influence on the
culture of our city, and build a better future for the
people of our city.
Our great desire is tosee you succeed in life, find
God and find yourself, discover purpose and a
way to make a difference in your world.
We describe ourselves as church without the boring bits because we believe
church is meant to be enjoyed not endured. From the warm welcome and
friendly faces in the atrium and the passionate and engaging music, to the
inspiring and helpful talks and supportive community; Proclaimers is a
church where you can belong, grow and find friends.
For us church is about people, not a building. In fact, we meet in the
very venue you are sitting in today, and in the past have met in halls,
schools, hotels and old churches, but these are just buildings that
give us an opportunity to gather. We have over 200 volunteers
committed to making our church a welcoming, engaging,
passionate, professional and helpful environment for people to
explore faith in Jesus.
Over the past 10 years we have seen Sunday attendances
grow from around 150 to over 500. In 2010 we began
work converting a former retail warehouse into a facility
we could use for Sunday services, midweek events and
of offices. What started out
as a tired, old warehouse became, with much
generosity, dedication, fundraising
and hard work, The Space: a modern, flexible
facility that we use today.
26
Proclaimers is home to people of all ages,
with an unusually high percentage of
young people in our church. Teenagers,
university students, young adults and
young professionals make up the majority of
our church and in recent years we have
grown significantly with families and children.
We also have tailor-made programs for children
aged from 1 to 11 on Sundays with music, crafts and
lots of fun – which makes kids love coming to church.
We hope you’ll leave TEDxNorwichED having been engrossed, engaged,
inspired, motivated and challenged. We also, of course, hope you’ll have
had a great time!
BUT – it’d be awful if all TEDxNorwichED led to was a ‘nice day in Norwich’.
We’d like the conversations, thoughts and ideas you have started
today to go on to be developed and have a real, lasting impact on children’s
experience of education and their life chances.
Making a pledge
At some point today, please visit our pledge wall and make a pledge about one
(or more) things you are going to start to do, or think about doing based on today.
We have also given you a pledge card in your TEDxNorwichED bag for you to fill
in with your pledge and take home – so you have a visual and lasting reminder of
what you have pledged to do.
Sharing Ideas
Please do let us know your ideas for how we could work together as a community
to help increase the impact of today. Do you want to arrange chances to meet up
with people regularly? Us to hold follow up events? Online moderated discussions?
