<strong>Swaffham</strong> <strong>Newsletter</strong> since Iceni Partnership took<br />
on publishing your monthly magazine. A big thank<br />
you from us for all your contributions which help<br />
fill an average of 36 pages per issue, 12 months a<br />
year. Many thanks to all our advertisers too, your<br />
continued support of this community asset is much<br />

‘Inspiring Iceni’ Photo Competition<br />
Next month we will be launching a photography<br />
competition with the theme of ‘Inspring Iceni’<br />
to celebrate the beauty of our area. This will be<br />
a perfect opportunity for both professional and<br />
amateur photographers to showcase their talents<br />
to visitors from near and far. There will also be<br />
the possibility of the photographs entered being<br />
exhibited in Gallery Iceni and being published in a<br />
spread in the newsletter.<br />
The only restriction on content is that the pictures<br />
must be taken in the Iceni area. A condition of entry<br />
will be that the Iceni Partnership has permission to<br />
use any of the photographs for our marketing and<br />
publicity to promote the area.<br />

Popular artist at Gallery Iceni<br />
Ingrida, or ‘Danila’, went to art college in her younger<br />
days and has a background in textile design and<br />
dressmaking. Over the course of her creative career<br />
she created many unique outfits. Now in retirement<br />
Danila dedicates all of her free time to developing<br />
new artwork.<br />
Danila’s favourite artists are the painters Monet and<br />
Cecil Kennedy, whose style greatly inspire her. She is<br />
particularly interested in recreating the methods of<br />
painting they used.<br />
You may have already admired Danila’s unusual<br />
ribbon needlework pieces, which were on display in<br />
Gallery Iceni throughout March and received much<br />
praise. Next month sees Danila returning to the<br />
gallery, this time working in the medium of oil paint<br />
like the famous artists she so admires.<br />
All artworks displayed are available to purchase, so<br />

The Nicholas Hamond Academy<br />
Supporting ‘one of our own’<br />
We are proud to support our students fundraising<br />
efforts for ‘one of their own’ during March. Several<br />
weeks of events are planned in order to raise as much<br />
money as possible in support of the family of TNHA<br />
student Archie Ramshaw and the inevitable expenses<br />
they will incur whilst he undergoes a bone marrow<br />
transplant. The campaign launched on Friday 9th<br />
March with staff wearing silly wigs and creating a noisy<br />
welcome into school including balloons, party poppers<br />
and whistles. BBC Local Radio attended and the podcast<br />
will be available on our website. There are many other<br />
‘fun’ events planned – keep your eyes peeled for further<br />

Evaluating resources for essential life skills<br />
First aid is an essential life skill which enables young<br />
people to safely help themselves and others; and can<br />
even save lives. Students are enjoying participating in<br />
a research project run by the British Red Cross giving<br />
them the opportunity to learn about first aid using<br />
specialised resources aimed at young people. As<br />
part of the research, students will complete a short<br />
questionnaire before and after learning, to help the<br />
Red Cross evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching<br />
resources used.<br />

Raid on the Ramparts<br />
Battering rams, catapults and fire balls were just<br />
some of the ways that students considered when<br />
planning a raid at the Castle Acre ruins. Learning<br />
about how castles were attacked and defended<br />
was part of a history trip when learning about life<br />
in medieval times. On returning to school students<br />
worked together to make replicas of the weapons used<br />
and presented their own mini battles to their peers.<br />

Team Holkham at SJA:<br />
This term Year 5, at <strong>Swaffham</strong> Junior Academy, are<br />
learning about transport, focussing on air transport.<br />
We started with an inspirational trip to the Imperial<br />
War Museum at Duxford,<br />
where we were able to<br />
see a whole variety of<br />
aircraft. We were even<br />
lucky enough to see a<br />
Spitfire taking off! Just<br />
after the half-term break,<br />
we were very fortunate<br />
to be visited by Corporal<br />
Steven Davies from RAF<br />
Marham. He explained<br />
all about the work<br />
that the military do in<br />
transporting things by<br />
air. Harvey asked how<br />
some planes are transported, and it turns out that<br />
you can fit a smaller plane inside a larger aircraft by<br />
detaching the wings first!<br />
Corporal Steven Davies explained how a large vehicle<br />
is used to reverse heavy machinery onto the back of<br />
an aircraft.<br />
In science, we have been learning all about the<br />
different forces which act on aircraft, investigating<br />
air resistance using parachutes and gravity using<br />
different masses. Later on this term, we will be<br />
making our own model aircrafts in Design Technology<br />
– we will have to use our knowledge of air resistance<br />
to make them streamlined.<br />
As part of our focus on extended writing across<br />
the curriculum, we produced information texts<br />
comparing the Spitfire with the Harrier Jump Jet –<br />
two British aircraft from very different eras.

Our Lady of Pity <strong>Swaffham</strong><br />
Japanese researchers have discovered that<br />
the ancient practice of Shinrin-Yoku, or ‘Forest<br />
bathing’ can help reduce stress, reduce blood<br />
pressure and even help with depression. Forest<br />
bathing refers to allowing the forest to envelope<br />
you with its energy. We all know how lovely it<br />
is to walk in the woods, breath the woodland<br />
air, smell the wonderful fragrances, listen to the<br />
birds and feel the gentle breeze. The Japanese<br />
put great emphasis on the presence of great<br />
trees especially the very old ones. In Japan there<br />
are forty four accredited Shinrin- Yoku forests.<br />
But we do not need to travel to Japan to seek out<br />
such a forest. There are little oasis’s near to all of<br />
us. It might even be your back garden if you have<br />
one. Nature’s beauty and energy are all around<br />
us, but we often pass it by without appreciating<br />
it. Even very populated areas have their share<br />
of trees. Take a leisurely stroll and you soon<br />
realise they are there. If I have something that<br />
is troubling me or I just feel out of kilter, a walk<br />
to the duck pond will often put me right. There<br />
I find still water, waving reeds, Willow trees and<br />
ducks of course! It’s hard to be obsessed by the<br />
modern world when we are surrounded by the<br />
ancient one. The natural world has great power<br />
to lift your spirit. It reminds us that we are part of<br />
it all, not separate from it.<br />

Have you heard about NHS Enhanced Summary<br />
Care Records??<br />
If you are registered with a GP practice in England<br />
you should have a ‘Standard Summary Care Record’<br />
(unless you’ve previously chosen to opt out). It<br />
holds important information about your health,<br />
the medicines you are taking, (including any bad<br />
reactions) or any allergies you’ve had or suffer from.<br />
You can now sign up for an ‘Enhanced Summary Care<br />
Record’. These have more detailed information about<br />
your medical history, illnesses, health problems,<br />
operations and vaccinations. It also includes how you<br />
would like to be treated, such as where you would<br />
prefer to receive care, what support you may need,<br />
and who should be contacted for further information<br />
relating to you. These ‘Enhanced Summary Care<br />
Records’ are particularly useful if you are taken into<br />
hospital unexpectedly, or are away from home and<br />
need medical attention (in England). In stressful<br />
times details about your medication and health can<br />
sometimes be difficult to remember, or in extreme<br />
circumstances the healthcare team is not able to<br />
ask you the information. If you are signed up for an<br />
‘Enhanced Summary Care Record’, the health and care<br />
professionals involved in your treatment can make<br />
better and safer decisions about your medication<br />
and can begin your care sooner. Your consent is still<br />
needed to access your records, except in extreme<br />
emergency situations, when the medical team would<br />
take the appropriate decisions. If you would like your<br />
medical records updated to an ‘Enhanced Summary<br />
Care Record’, just ask at reception for a form to fill in<br />
and sign. Don’t delay; speak to your reception team<br />
as soon as possible.<br />
Pharmacy Opening Hours<br />
Recently the opening hours of the pharmacy<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> have changed – the pharmacy opens<br />
each day between 9.00am and 12.30pm and again<br />
from 2.30pm until 6.00pm. The Necton pharmacy<br />
remains unchanged and opens between 9.00am and<br />
12.00pm, and from 2.30pm until 5.00pm.<br />
SMS Text Appointment Reminders<br />
Don’t forget to sign up for SMS Text Appointment<br />
Reminders – this can help cut down on the amount<br />
of appointments which are missed or forgotten. 85<br />
of our patients in January and 97 in February didn’t<br />
show up for their booked appointments - more<br />
importantly they didn’t ring to cancel them. If you no<br />
longer need a booked appointment, please respect<br />
your Drs and take the time cancel the appointment.<br />
This can then be allocated to another patient. Similar<br />
figures for ‘Did not show’ are reported all across the<br />
NHS regions – let’s all try to reduce this number.<br />

President’s Corner<br />
By the time this article is published,<br />
Easter will be upon us, or even just<br />
past. I hope everyone had an enjoyable<br />
time. And a week before Easter <strong>Swaffham</strong> Rotary<br />
Club will have held their Bollywood night. At the time<br />
of writing this is still to come, but it promises to be<br />
an enjoyable evening, with Indian food and dance. I<br />
will report on this event in next month’s article. We<br />
held raffles for 2 Easter hampers to raise funds to be<br />
distributed to charities, and we want to thank The<br />
George Hotel and The 20 Churchwardens for selling<br />
entries to the raffles.<br />
On a sadder note, in February one of our members,<br />
Barry Briggs, died, after a painful illness. Barry, a<br />
proud Yorkshireman, had transferred to <strong>Swaffham</strong><br />
Rotary from the Dereham Club about 3 years ago,<br />
and in that time had made a valuable contribution<br />
to our Club’s activities and fellowship. We will miss<br />
his friendship, practicality and sense of humour, and<br />
our thoughts are with his wife (and fellow-Rotarian)<br />
Nancy.<br />
Barry was a keen golfer, and a staunch supporter of<br />
our annual Charity Golf Day. Planning is well under<br />
way for this year’s event, which will be held at<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> Golf Club on Monday 23 July. This year we<br />
are supporting Big C (Norfolk’s Cancer Charity) and<br />
SSAFA (the Forces’ Charity). If anyone is interested in<br />
entering a team of 4 for the Golf Day, please contact<br />

01760 788084. We are also seeking donations of<br />
items that can be auctioned on the day, and for raffle<br />
prizes. In addition, local businesses can sponsor<br />
holes on the course. As with possible entries, I can<br />

Day and these great local charities.<br />
Our usual programme of meetings has continued.<br />
Sue Gattuso from the <strong>Swaffham</strong> Museum spoke to us<br />
about the history of <strong>Swaffham</strong>, giving a fascinating<br />
insight into the development of the town, by<br />
reference to various buildings constructed over<br />
different historical periods. We have also had a<br />
talk from Robin Wraight, who runs the Rotary Youth<br />
Leadership Awards (RYLA) for East Anglia. RYLA is a<br />
personal development programme for young people,<br />
taking place at Grafham Water over a week of<br />
intensive activity in September. It involves a mixture<br />
of “outward bound” type activities and discussion<br />
work in teams, and nurtures self-confidence, teambuilding<br />
and problem-solving skills. <strong>Swaffham</strong> Rotary<br />
Club tries to find a candidate each year, and over the<br />
years have received extremely positive feed-back<br />
from the candidates, who invariably feel they have<br />
benefited from the experience.<br />

<strong>Swaffham</strong> Jazz Club<br />
Our March session saw a full house welcome for their first<br />
visit to the Club the well established local Dixieland band,<br />
The Nene Valley Jazz Group. As did the original marching<br />
bands that gave birth to jazz, they perform mostly outside in<br />
the open air and make no concessions for playing indoors,<br />
having a full-on sound at all times.<br />
Their leader, Bill Brewer, plays both trumpet and trombone.<br />
I have never come across this double before, the<br />
embouchures being so different in each case. The pressure<br />
in playing the trumpet is considerable and needs rockhard<br />
lips, but Bill could switch effortlessly to the trombone<br />
midway through a number and execute a succession of liptrills,<br />
which requires very flexible lips. He also had a good<br />
comedy act going with his father Neale on sax and vocals.<br />
The other two soloists were Pete Scott, clarinet, and Ed<br />
Reed, guitar.<br />
The tight-knit rhythm section were Mal Ashby-drums,<br />
Martin Haley-banjo and Jeff Scullard-bass. I was a bit<br />
disappointed that none of this section played a solo. I know<br />
Jeff can play a fine solo and I like to hear the (occasional!)<br />
banjo and drum solo.<br />
The band’s repertoire is drawn mainly from the 1920’s and<br />
30’s and included many well known numbers such as I<br />
Can’t Give You Anything But Love Baby and That’s My Baby.<br />
They finished with I’ll Be Seeing You, which is true! They’re<br />
coming back to the Club next October.<br />

The Green Britain Centre<br />
The growing season is well underway, the<br />
atrium here is an excellent propagator for<br />
seedlings that will soon be set out in the<br />
organic gardens.<br />

<strong>Swaffham</strong> Arts<br />
A close look at Musical Angels with Martyn<br />
Clarke was a reminder of the beautiful works of<br />
art in the windows of our churches. The quality<br />
of the early stained and painted glass from<br />
Oxborough Church was particularly poignant<br />
in the detail of expression on the faces of the<br />
angels. That they have survived for hundreds<br />
of years, and look as fresh as ever, only adds<br />
wonder to their delicate presence.<br />
Three years ago, Steve Bingham, directing<br />
a chamber orchestra, gave a stunning<br />
performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.<br />
This month the Ad Hoc Strings from Ely,<br />
directed by Steve, are returning with Serenade<br />
for Strings, an afternoon of music including<br />
Mozart “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” and Elgar<br />
Serenade for strings, two well-known and wellloved<br />
pieces. Steve is not only a wonderful<br />
musician, but also a superb communicator, and<br />
always has a great rapport with his audience.<br />
The concert will take place on Sunday April<br />
22nd at 3 pm in <strong>Swaffham</strong> Assembly Rooms.<br />

<strong>Swaffham</strong> Evening WI<br />
The March meeting was held at 7pm<br />
on 7th March at the Church Rooms.<br />
We listened to an amusing Poem read<br />
by one of our members and gave out our monthly<br />
birthday cards. Our speaker this month told us<br />
about a voluntary organisation called Norfolk Blood<br />
Bikes. This is run entirely by volunteers who operate<br />
mainly during the night to get blood and other much<br />
needed fluids to our county hospitals. They even<br />
take donated breast milk to Neo Natal units.<br />
The speaker covered much more than I can include<br />
here but he was extremely interesting and it was an<br />
eye opener.<br />
After the talk and many questions we had a social<br />
break and afterwards concluded our monthly<br />
business which this month mainly consisted of<br />
arranging a trip to West Acre Theatre and the<br />
transport for auditions. The raffle was drawn and the<br />
meeting was closed.<br />
Next month we are looking forward to hearing Rachel<br />
Duffield (a favourite of ours) give us her version of<br />
Elizabeth I. We meet on the first Wednesday of each<br />
month so if you would like to come along as a visitor<br />

Sporle Afternoon WI<br />
February’s meeting was a very busy<br />
one and it was good to see so many<br />
members who had recovered from<br />
the “bug”. The meeting had been made an open one<br />
as the subject and speaker were of interest to many<br />
people as it was all about Marham Air Base and its<br />
future. Our speaker, an RAF member of considerable<br />
service, was very clued up on the changes already<br />
made and those outstanding changes still to take<br />
place so that the base can take the new fighter<br />
planes coming this autumn. Many of us expressed<br />
sorrow to be losing the Tornado as it has become a<br />
regular sight in our skies for many years. The new<br />
plane in turn will become a familiar sight and sound.<br />
The speaker was happy to answer many questions<br />
especially from our gentlemen visitors both before<br />
and during our break for tea and cake.<br />
The regular club business followed with the financial<br />
situation, possible outing venues, and a lively debate<br />
over the resolutions. Members were of the opinion<br />
that we should have something closer to home to<br />
campaign for, something our WI weight could maybe<br />
influence. Birthdays and the raffle then followed and<br />
a different kind of poem closed the meeting.<br />

The meeting on March 13th in<br />
North Pickenham church at 2pm<br />
was opened by Carolyn Vincent<br />
with an amusing poem about her new“ socks.”<br />
Our speaker was one of our members Sue Potter<br />
who spoke about “ Her Nursing Journey”. It<br />
started with her training at Great Ormond Street<br />
Children’s Hospital and this was followed by an<br />
interesting career in the Queen Alexandra Nursing<br />
Corps, both here and abroad. She then returned<br />
to civilian life to fund raise and open the early<br />
Children’s hospices in East Anglia having seen the<br />
need for them. Finally, she did community nursing<br />
in very rural Scotland. A fascinating story to tell.<br />
This was followed by our “ Tea “ and the Business<br />
part of-the meeting.<br />

about joining this group.<br />
• Arts and Crafts Group - They have met and have<br />
some projects in mind for the future<br />

Beachamwell & District WI<br />
Our March meeting was due to take<br />
place on an evening when the village<br />
was firmly in the grip of snow and<br />
ice. We had been looking forward to<br />
exploring the art and architecture of<br />
the ‘Art Deco’ period. But local driving and walking<br />
conditions were treacherous and would have meant<br />
a hazardous journey for our speaker, so we felt we<br />
had to cancel the meeting.<br />
Now we are anticipating our next get-together.<br />
Penelope Watkins will talk on the subject ‘Know your<br />
shape, enjoy your assets’. Intrigued? We are. We<br />
think it may involve underwear and fashion! Why<br />
not come and find out more?<br />

<strong>Swaffham</strong> Lioness Club - the Pride<br />
of <strong>Swaffham</strong><br />
Our Multiple District (National) Conference was held<br />
at the Marriott Hotel, Huntingdon on 16th – 18th<br />
February, and was a most enjoyable and informative<br />
weekend. It is great to meet up with Lionesses from<br />
other Districts for some fun and fellowship.<br />
We had a speaker from “Tiny Tickers” our Chairman’s<br />
chosen charity for the year, which provides support<br />
for babies diagnosed with congenital heart defects.<br />
We have donated £100 towards this worthy cause.<br />
To top off a lovely weekend, we won the Scrapbook<br />
competition trophy again this year.<br />
On 24th February we hosted our East Anglia District<br />
Lioness Meeting here in <strong>Swaffham</strong> Lionesses Karen<br />
Nye and Rosemary Skea were awarded Membership<br />
Certificates for completing 25 Years of Service in<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> Lioness Club.<br />
On Saturday 31st March we will be running our charity<br />
Easter Egg Tombola stall in the Assembly Rooms, and<br />
will be attending the Mayor’s Civic Reception on 7th<br />
April.<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> & District Lions<br />
Due to poor weather conditions<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> Lions held their 3rd<br />
Annual Pancake Race inside the<br />
Assemble Rooms this year. With<br />
eight teams of two from the<br />
Lions, Lionesses, Home Hospice, the Sacred Heart<br />
School, Iceni Partnership, Ward Gethin Archer and<br />
Louise & Ben, the races were very competitive,<br />
with the local brother and sister winning the final<br />
against Ward Gethin Archer. The engraved frying<br />
pan trophy was presented by Lion President Pam<br />
Tallon to the winners. Before the finals race the<br />
under-fives held a series of fun races much to the<br />
amusement of the mums and dads.<br />
The Lions Clubs of the British Isles are celebrating<br />
the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International:<br />
100 years of proud service to our communities.<br />
We were delighted that our Patron, HRH, The<br />
Countess of Wessex G.C.V.O. hosted a Reception at<br />
Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, 28th February<br />
to help Lions Clubs mark this milestone.<br />
The work that <strong>Swaffham</strong> Lions do in the community<br />
has been recognized by this honour and completes<br />
a year of celebrations that included a Civic<br />
reception by <strong>Swaffham</strong> Town Council, 208k cycle<br />
ride, a month at the Tesco store, a charity quiz,<br />
children’s peace poster competition and a thanks<br />
giving service at St Peter & Paul church attended<br />
by 200 people.<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> Lions President Pam Tallon had the<br />
honour of representing the club at the Palace for<br />
Lions Clubs International Centenary Celebrations.<br />
At the reception, the Countess of Wessex said she<br />
was honoured to be the patron of the Lions. When<br />
she visited different countries she was proud when<br />
she saw the Lions Logo in hospitals or clinics. She<br />
also said she gets the praise, but it’s the Lions’<br />
membership that spends hours doing the work all<br />
over the world.<br />
Following support for local children who have<br />
serious illnesses, <strong>Swaffham</strong> Lions have donated<br />
£500 to the Archie Ramshaw appeal. In October<br />
2010, the life of Archie Ramshaw changed forever.<br />
Then aged just seven, Archie was diagnosed with<br />
a rare form of anaemia known as Congenital<br />
Sideroblastic Anaemia. The condition means<br />
Archie’s bone marrow is unable to produce<br />

healthy blood cells. Sideroblastic Anaemia stops<br />
Archie’s body transferring the iron in his blood into<br />
haemoglobin, which red cells need to transport<br />
oxygen efficiently. Now aged 14, the teenager,<br />
who lives in <strong>Swaffham</strong> with his older brother Harry<br />
and mother and father Theresa and Craig, has had<br />
more than 150 blood transfusions and takes 11<br />
tablets a day. The Lions are also looking at ways<br />
of supporting Archie and his family during his time<br />
with treatment, with further donations of time or<br />
money.<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> Lions were at <strong>Swaffham</strong>’s Tesco store for<br />
two days collecting for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil<br />
Appeal. Lions throughout the country support this<br />
great cause, which provides nurses for patients<br />
who have cancer as well as running nine hospices<br />
and a helper home service.<br />
As part of the 100 years celebrations of Lions<br />
International, the Lions have set a target of feeding<br />
5000 people with food donations. <strong>Swaffham</strong><br />
Lions have answered the call and club members<br />
have supplied 44kgs of food, which will go to the<br />
Norwich food bank along with other donations<br />
from Lions clubs in East Anglia. You don’t need a<br />
miracle when you have Lions.

Merle Boddy Centre<br />
Thank you to all the lovely people who attended<br />
our quiz. The theme was very loosely connected to<br />
Valentine’s. The winners were a girl’s night out, they<br />
won a bottle of wine and chocs. Our lovely, young<br />
farmers came at the bottom but didn’t go home empty<br />
handed, with something nice and gooey to tuck into.<br />
We made a fantastic £472. All our supporters are just<br />
the best. Our next fundraiser was on 16th March with<br />
an Easter bingo, fantastic prizes and a raffle.<br />
I once saw on the back of a Landrover that young<br />
farmers do best in green wellies, well our local young<br />
farmers are the best in what ever they wear. On the<br />
night of the quiz we were presented with a cheque for<br />
£300, doesn’t this just go to prove that the younger<br />
generation do care. I am so very pleased that we have<br />
made such a brilliant connection with such a fantastic<br />
group of people. Many, many thanks to all of you.<br />
The Merle Boddy Centre has had its face lift. We now<br />
have 3 of the best looking loos in town, one has a<br />
shower, so really there is no need for me to go home!<br />
At the same time as the major refurb of the toilets, we<br />
took the opportunity to re-decorate the main room<br />
and the kitchen too. My thanks goes to all of my staff<br />
and volunteers, who pitched in and did a fantastic job<br />
on not only painting but, a major turn out of things<br />
that were of no longer any use to us. These things<br />
were not thrown out, but recycled.Thank you also to<br />
Candy, Kerry and John, who helped a great deal to<br />
achieve our new look. We also had two of the nicest<br />
professional painters, Paul and Jonny, who pointed us<br />
in the right direction and did a top job on the ceilings<br />
and the kitchen. The building work was contracted<br />
to R&I builders who did a stunning job. Many thanks<br />
to all you lovely men who drank our tea and ate our<br />
biscuits, but got on with the job of making the day<br />

Ian Clews has been hard at work raising money and<br />
we are the lucky recipients. Ian gave us a cheque for<br />
£800 and a skittles game, both gifts were very much<br />
appreciated. The skittles game was tried out straight<br />
away by George, this will give hours of fun and<br />
laughter. Thank you again to Ian and of course your<br />
lovely roadie Maggie too.
Age Concern <strong>Swaffham</strong> & District<br />
April and therefore Spring has arrived and we at Age Concern have our loins girded up for doing what we<br />
can to continue assisting older folk in the town and in the villages round about. There is still a bit of confusion<br />
regarding what the difference is between Age UK and our own Age Concern organisation. Age UK is a large,<br />
nationally based charity whereas we are a local group just for this area. Officially we are “Friends” of Age UK<br />
and have a particularly close relationship with Age UK Norfolk, in Norwich. All three organisations operate for<br />
the benefit of people over 60. We have just under 200 members (there is no upper limit) and it costs only £5<br />
per year to join. If interested, please contact our Membership Secretary Vicky, see details below.<br />
What do we do? For our members generally we hold a free monthly entertainment meeting in the Assembly<br />
Rooms, last Tuesday in the month, 2 pm, (in house) unless there is a trip out.<br />
During the better weather we organise trips out by coach, three or four per year, plus a Christmas attraction of<br />
some sort e.g. the Thursford Spectacular. John Clarke (see below) organises these, so please contact him for the<br />

act as drivers are always needed. Our Coordinator, Clair has recently resigned her position<br />
and we are now recruiting a replacement.<br />
For those lonely people at home we also provide a Befriending Service and again if you<br />
would like to consider volunteering to help visit, you would be most welcome. Our office is<br />
open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 4 pm from where an Information<br />

Ashill Holme Hale Gardening Club<br />
At our February meeting Kathy Gray gave an<br />
enlightening talk about ‘The Plant Hunters’. There<br />
has been an interest in collecting plants from other<br />
parts of the world as far back as the Queen of Egypt<br />
in 1495BC. In this country the Trandescant family in<br />
the 16th and 17th centuries were early collectors<br />
and gave their name to the tulip tree, Tradescantia<br />
virginiana. But Kathy’s talk concentrated on four men<br />
who, between the mid 18th and early 20th centuries,<br />
collected thousands of specimens, many of which are<br />
common features of our gardens today.<br />
The first of these was Joseph Banks who made several<br />
voyages with Captain Cook to South America, Tahiti,<br />
New Zealand and Australia. His finds included the<br />
passion flower, gardenia, jasmine, phormium, hebe<br />
and leptospermum. He gave his name to Banksia<br />
integrifolia, commonly known as coast banksia and<br />
persuaded King George 111 to create the botanical<br />
gardens at Kew.<br />
Francis Masson was a gardener at Kew who made<br />
several trips to South Africa in the late 18th century<br />
bringing us Erica, protea, amaryllis, aloe and the arum<br />
lily among many others. The Massonia lily is named<br />
after him and the encephalartos he brought home<br />
in 1775 is still thriving at Kew - probably the world’s<br />
largest pot plant! He also introduced kniphofia,<br />
pelagonium and agapanthus from North America<br />
where he died in 1805.<br />
David Douglas from Scotland did most of his<br />
exploration in North America in the early 19th<br />
century. He is known primarily for the introduction of<br />
the douglas fir but, as the UK had only three varieties<br />
of conifer at that time, most of the species we have<br />
today are attributable to him. However, he was also<br />
responsible for introducing solidago (golden rod),<br />
aster, mahonia, penstemon and lupinus, the basis for<br />
all our varieties of lupins today.<br />
Kathy’s last plant hunter in this talk was Ernest<br />
Wilson, who was sent to China in 1899 in search<br />
of the hankerchief tree, Davidia involucrata. Along<br />
the way his discoveries included acer griseum,<br />
clematis armandii, meconopsis, magnolia sinensis<br />
and rhododendron, the legacy of which can still be<br />
seen at Sheringham Park. In the early 20th century<br />
he moved to North America from where he gave us<br />
viburnum, daphne and primula.<br />
There were so many species mentioned in Kathy’s<br />
talk it left us with the question ‘what on earth is<br />
indigenous to this country?’ We obviously owe these<br />
plant humters a great debt for providing our homes<br />
and gardens with such a diverse array of plants.<br />

Our course beginning in April focuses on the history<br />
of rural life in East Anglia. Popular tutor Mary<br />
Fewster has previously led courses in <strong>Swaffham</strong> on<br />
transport, religion and industry in East Anglia and<br />
she now returns with a course looking at a period<br />
of major changes in the landscape, society and<br />
economy of the area: Country Life: Rural East Anglia<br />
1700 – 1900. Topics will include enclosure; the role<br />
of the great estates and the influence of the squire<br />
and the parson on rural society; and the lives of the<br />
labouring poor and the rural unrest that flared from<br />
time to time as a result of changes or conditions.<br />
The course runs for 7 weeks starting on Friday 20th<br />
April, 10am to 12 noon. The fee is £51. You are<br />
welcome to attend the first session as a ‘taster’ for £7<br />
with no obligation to continue. Fees may be waived<br />
for those in receipt of benefits. Courses are held at<br />
the Community Centre, Campingland, <strong>Swaffham</strong>.<br />

Refit at the Red Lion<br />
After a long process of upgrading the Red Lion we<br />
can finally see a major improvement in the main bar,<br />
restaurant and the rooms. For the past few years we<br />
have improved and upgraded the 10 en-suite rooms<br />

People who attended the Iceni Rural Writers’ event<br />
in the George Hotel on 8 March were treated to an<br />
interesting evening of readings from local writers.<br />
Because it was International Women’s Day, the writers<br />
chose readings connected to the theme of being<br />
a woman. There was a mixture of fact and fiction;<br />
poetry and prose - something for everybody in the<br />
audience to enjoy.<br />
The highlight of the evening was a reading by Heidi<br />
Williamson, who grew up in <strong>Swaffham</strong>. She read from<br />
her two published anthologies ‘Electric Shadow’ and<br />
‘The Print Museum’. It was very interesting to hear<br />
Heidi put her poems into context and we were given a<br />
preview of three poems which will appear in her next<br />
collection.<br />
To end the evening several members of the audience<br />
read pieces during an open mic slot. Leah Spencer<br />
(secretary) said “The evening was a great success and<br />
Iceni Rural Writers would like to thank <strong>Swaffham</strong> Town<br />
Council for supporting this event. We plan to hold a<br />

Wissey U3A<br />
On Thursday 1st March the appropriately named<br />
‘Beast from the East’ and storm ‘Emma’ from the<br />
South visited the area to deposit great quantities<br />
of unwanted snow and create as much havoc as<br />
they possibly could. As a result, and much to the<br />
dismay of many members, the monthly meeting<br />
was duly cancelled. Although the presentation by<br />
David Mason about Wildlife Photography was sadly<br />
missed, David agreed to return again in 2019.<br />
Members who had previously attended a Red Cross<br />
First Aid course at <strong>Swaffham</strong>’s Community Centre<br />
attended a refresher course on Monday 26th February<br />
to experience some practical and possibly more<br />
realistic first aid situations. The meeting started with<br />
some video clips to illustrate appropriate responses<br />
for various injuries. Members then responded to a<br />
number of casualties who had injuries ranging from<br />
Burns to Bleeding and there was one casualty who<br />
was unresponsive and not breathing. This casualty<br />
required Responders to use a dummy ‘Manikin’<br />
for practising CPR techniques. Grateful thanks to<br />
members of the ‘<strong>Swaffham</strong> Players’ who kindly acted<br />
as casualties on the day and added a greater sense of<br />
realism to the first aid situations.<br />
Members of the Table Tennis group met Downham<br />
Market U3A’s team for another friendly tournament<br />
at Denver village hall and after some exciting games<br />
were treated to refreshments with teas and cakes.<br />
A new group entitled ’Family History’ has recently<br />
been proposed and a workshop entitled ‘Learn<br />
Russian Words’ is to be held at the Great Britain<br />
Centre on 30th March. If these subjects interest you,<br />
or if you have an interesting hobby or pastime which<br />
you would like to share with others why not make<br />
enquires about joining the Wissey U3A.<br />
The U3A is an international movement whose aims are<br />
the education of retired members of the community<br />
or those in their ‘Third Age’ of life. U3A membership<br />
is open to any individual who by definition is not in<br />
full-time gainful employment, so anyone working<br />
‘part-time’ can also apply for membership.<br />

Community Litter Pick<br />
On the 20th February staff from Hughes Electrical<br />
were joined by children from <strong>Swaffham</strong> CE VC Infant<br />
and Nursery School to help tidy up the town. The<br />
litter pick began around Campingland as it’s close to<br />
the school and safe for the children. We then headed<br />
towards the church. We are hoping to continue to<br />
organise further days like this throughout the year.<br />

Emma was guest speaker at our last meeting, explaining<br />
the work she does (all voluntary!) and how the records<br />
are computerised. She brought with her a few items<br />
which have caused a headache for the Museum during<br />
a recent inventory. Why has something been saved?<br />
What does it have to do with <strong>Swaffham</strong>, or basically<br />
- just what is it! She also showed the group copies of<br />
some of the records which the archives keep and which<br />
researchers can use - by request - in the Archive Room.<br />

the late Mr Reg Stibbon who died in January. It was<br />
stated that during WWII he served in the Royal Air<br />
Force. This was incorrect, he served with the Royal<br />
Norfolk Regiment. Reg, a carpenter by trade, then<br />
studied to qualify as Clerk of Works, Buildings and Civil<br />
Engineering, going on to work on air bases all over East<br />
Anglia. Apologies for our error.<br />

The <strong>Swaffham</strong> Hare<br />
Those of you who follow us on social media may have<br />
noticed the emergence of ‘The <strong>Swaffham</strong> Hare’.<br />
We can’t give too much away yet, but you should be<br />
seeing much more of this mysterious figure around<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> in the coming months! #thehareiscoming<br />
Community Fridge Update<br />
The <strong>Swaffham</strong> Community Fridge has now been open<br />
for over 3 months and we have seen great success<br />
already. Thanks to our regular donations from local<br />
businesses such as Starlings grocers and Wellbread<br />
Bakery we are always well stocked with a great mix<br />
of fruit, veg, cakes, pastries and other baked goods.<br />
Thanks to word of mouth we are seeing steadily<br />
increasing numbers of visitors to the fridge, with<br />
many now regularly popping by daily or weekly.<br />
As the fridge is part of a Breckland Council initiative<br />
to prevent food waste to landfill, we are required<br />
to weigh in and out all of the food from the fridge<br />
and keep a written record. From our records we are<br />
pleased to announce we have already saved well<br />
over a kilo of food from landfill at the time of writing.<br />
If you would like to donate or take food from the<br />
fridge, then feel free to visit between 9am and 4pm<br />
Monday to Friday. The fridge is located just outside<br />
the Iceni Partnership office in the Community Centre.<br />

Hospice Support<br />
Rapid progress towards our major event this year<br />
“The Relay Together”, on Sunday the 17th June at the<br />
Rugby Club is being made as Teams are beginning to<br />
place their names to take part. For further information<br />

fun at this community project knowing that you are<br />

The Home Hospice Support Team were involved in the<br />
annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race organised by<br />
the Lions of <strong>Swaffham</strong> held at the Assembly Rooms,<br />
but owing to the inclement weather conditions, the<br />
event was transferred to indoors of the building. As<br />
in the past it was very well supported and great fun<br />
too.<br />
The Quiz Night that was scheduled for March 2nd at<br />
the Conservative Club had to be cancelled caused by<br />
the Beast from the East. It will now take place on April<br />
12th with a 7.30pm start and costing £5.00 per head<br />

The Charity’s annual Town Collection takes place on<br />
May 12th and if you are interested in standing for an<br />
hour or so, then I am sure the Home Support Team at<br />

The Charity are seeking out further volunteers to<br />
serve and support the Fundraising Committee in<br />
their work to raise vital income ensuring the survival<br />
of the Hospice. The commitment is left to those who<br />
have the desire to assist us, but be rest assured you<br />
will certainly enjoy meeting those who already give<br />
their time for this wonderful cause. There is always a<br />
need for the Committee to receive new ideas to take<br />
forward for planning future events. On the other<br />
hand why not organise an event for us and if you<br />

Mind Body Spirit<br />
Want to relax and release stress?<br />
Well Kirtan could be your answer.<br />
A local <strong>Swaffham</strong> lady Chrissy Willis runs a number<br />
of workshops for people to enjoy and relax as you<br />
sing/chant beautiful ancient mantras. You will<br />
sing together simple melodies in call and response<br />
style and don’t be concerned about how well you<br />
sing, just relax and enjoy the meditative benefits.<br />
Tuition and words are provided and explained.<br />
Kirtan, is singing/chanting beautiful ancient<br />
mantras/melodies in a call and response<br />
style. It’s a shared offering and you don’t have<br />
to be concerned with how well you sing, just<br />
enjoy the benefit it brings to you. Another way to<br />
describe Kirtan is perhaps a singing version of your<br />

physical yoga practice. It is a truly beautiful way<br />
to express the profound feeling and experiences<br />
that come to us during meditation and in our<br />
physical asana practice. It is a great way to release<br />
stress and tension, relax and melt into a larger<br />
experience, some may know it as Kirtan-yoga, as<br />
an integral part of bhakti-yoga, which is the yoga<br />
of developing pure spiritual love.<br />
Often described as people coming together Kirtan<br />
is a family-like atmosphere within a music session<br />
which gives the result of deep meditation. More<br />
specifically, it is the call and response singing<br />
used in spiritual tradition from India.<br />
Kirtan is a ‘sanskrit’ word meaning “to chant”<br />
referring to the process of chanting and it<br />
includes a sense of repeating and describing,<br />
which makes it very simple to learn. Specifically,<br />
it refers to the glorification of the Supreme. You<br />
may doubtlessly be familiar with other sanskrit<br />
words such as, yoga, avatar, mantra, guru and<br />
karma, which are in use worldwide and perhaps<br />
in the coming years, we can expect kirtan to<br />
become another word that will be more familiar<br />
as it starts to experience general usage around<br />
you.<br />
The origins of Kirtan go back to India where<br />
people have been singing about Rama, Krishna,<br />
Govinda, etc in their local languages and in<br />
Sanskrit, for a millennia as a non-denominational<br />
language for the universal Spirit; the song of the<br />
soul. Traditionally it is sung in Sanskrit, but in<br />
today’s times it can be heard in many different<br />
languages, including English. You can think of it<br />
as a singalong.<br />
Chrissy runs classes out of Sporle with her April<br />
classes on 12th and 26th April usually they start<br />
at 7.30pm. Finishing with a hot drink and open<br />
discussions. She will be delighted to discuss this<br />
with anyone interested so for further information<br />

One final note the next Mind Body Spirit Exhibition<br />
will be in The Assembly Rooms on Saturday 28th<br />

‘In Touch with your Town’ is<br />

Smith. It deals with some of the<br />
most topical items of the day and<br />
the odd item where the Council want to share<br />
information with the Town.<br />
LET IT SNOW – True Grit!<br />
Well that was a little bit chilly wasn’t it? There we<br />
are sitting pretty almost at the end of February<br />
and into early March, and down comes the snow<br />
in abundance this year. As the Country ground to<br />
a halt as temperatures plummeted to -8 degrees,<br />
much to the amusement of those who live in Siberia<br />
coping with -45 degrees, and going about their<br />
everyday live as normal, believing their weather<br />
was being kind to them in their springtime at -32<br />
degrees.<br />
Our grateful thanks to our small team of voluntary<br />
gritters, the number of volunteers has steadily<br />
reduced year on year over the past five years, as<br />
the Town has become complacent with mild winters<br />
being the norm. Our thanks also to the outside staff<br />
of <strong>Swaffham</strong> Town Council who did their best to<br />
keep the Town Centre pathways clear, they worked<br />
extremely hard and beyond their call of duty.<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> was the first Town or Parish in Norfolk to<br />
introduce a voluntary gritting scheme some years<br />
back, it worked really well for a couple of years, but<br />
other Towns and Parishes have overtaken us now.<br />
We were unprepared and lacking in numbers.<br />
As usual the thanks, compliments and good wishes<br />
were balanced with the odd inappropriate or<br />
ridiculous comments or complaints. “What do I pay<br />
my Council Tax for?” “You haven’t cleared Theatre<br />
Street Car Park.” “My street isn’t cleared, what<br />
are you going to do about it?” “This is disgusting,<br />
the Council have let us down again.” Most of the<br />
negatives started with “You haven’t done this…” or<br />
“When are you going to do that…” There were of<br />
course some comments that we cannot print in this<br />
newsletter...<br />
The assumption that some people make is that<br />
clearing snow is someone else’s problem, or<br />
someone else’s job, whereas with our voluntary<br />
gritting scheme, it is down to you. As austerity cuts<br />
have worked there way through local government,<br />
most outlying estates will never see a gritting lorry<br />
as County Council budgets are cut year on year,<br />
neither will they see any volunteers, particularly<br />
if you haven’t volunteered… Norfolk County<br />
Council prioritise the main road network, and<br />
their resources are stretched to the full during the<br />

period when snow falls. The Town Council staff<br />
clear pavements in the Town Centre, everywhere<br />
else is down to you.<br />
We have had the issue of private use of grit in grit<br />
bins again this year. We are currently reviewing<br />
whether we need bins in new locations, and<br />
whether some bins need to be re-located as they<br />
have been misused. The grit is supplied by Norfolk<br />
County Council for use on the public pavements<br />
only.<br />
ShopAppy to launch in <strong>Swaffham</strong><br />
The Breckland launch of ShopAppy is set to take<br />
place in <strong>Swaffham</strong> during April, so watch this<br />
space. <strong>Swaffham</strong> is set to be the Flagship Town for<br />
Norfolk, as over 20 independent local businesses<br />
are already signed up to this scheme. Find out more<br />
on www.breckland.gov.uk/shopappy This will bring<br />
a greater digital presence for our Independent<br />
Traders and more of a level playing field with our<br />
National multiples, as click and collect will add a<br />
new dimension to the town.<br />
If we are ever going to attract new independent<br />
traders to invest and trade in this town, we have<br />
to patronise, and regularly support the traders that<br />
we already have. A greater on-line presence will<br />
mean that at least they have a fighting chance to<br />
compete.<br />

on Wednesday 27th April 6.30pm at the Town Hall.<br />

The <strong>Swaffham</strong> Neighbourhood Plan is a communityled<br />
document for guiding the future development<br />
of our Town. It is about the use and development<br />
of land over the next 20 years. The plan will set out<br />
a vision and aspirations for the future development<br />
of the Town and will be an important document<br />
that will help influence and control the way our<br />
town changes in the future, including any new<br />
housing developments<br />
This is the third in a series of Articles designed<br />
to give you the latest information on how we<br />
are progressing with the development of our<br />
Neighbourhood Plan. Firstly, we want to remind<br />
you of our two key Consultation Events in April. It<br />
is important that we hear from as many people as<br />
possible about the way in which we all envisage<br />
our Town changing and developing over the next
20 years. All age groups welcome.<br />

to give you the latest information on how we<br />
are progressing with the development of our<br />
Neighbourhood Plan<br />
We also want to remind you of our two key<br />
Consultation Events in April. It is important that we<br />
hear from as many people as possible about the<br />
way in which we all envisage our Town changing<br />
and developing over the next 20 years. All age<br />
groups welcome.<br />

and Tuesday 17th April, 3pm to 7pm. VENUE:<br />

Emerging policy ideas fall under the following<br />
broad headings:<br />
• Housing and the Build Environment<br />
• Environment and Landscape<br />
• Community and Services<br />
• Business and Employment<br />
• Transport and Access.<br />
One of our ongoing tasks is to continue to consult<br />
with Organisations, Charities, Clubs, local business<br />
etc to gather evidence to develop the policies<br />
that go into the Neighbourhood Plan. This work is<br />
underway but if you would like to ensure that your<br />
input is heard we would welcome the chance to<br />
come and meet you.<br />
Another Opportunity to hear more about the Plan is<br />
to attend the event known as the “Town Assembly”<br />
This is held in the evening of Wed 25th April in the<br />
Assembly Rooms. There will be a short presentation<br />
about where things stand and the process leading<br />
to a formal consultation when the draft plan will be<br />
considered by all residents.<br />
The Steering group met again on the 5th March<br />
and reviewed what was emerging on the main<br />
policy ideas. It also looked at what is known as<br />
a “Scoping report” which helps review relevant<br />
plans and policies, sets out the baseline data for<br />
<strong>Swaffham</strong> and identifies the key sustainability<br />
issues. This in turn leads to a “Sustainability<br />
Appraisal Framework” which will be used to assess<br />
the emerging N P policies and to consult Breckland<br />
District Council.<br />
An initial set of draft policy ideas continue to be<br />
developed during March and these will be an<br />
important part of the Consultation events in April.<br />

<strong>Swaffham</strong> Home Library Service<br />
The Home Library Service delivers books and audio<br />
books to people who are unable to get to their local<br />
library whether permanently or temporarily. Books<br />
are delivered once a month by friendly volunteers<br />
who have been vetted by the Royal Voluntary Service.<br />

From the Mayor’s Parlour<br />
Dear All,<br />
I must say that the cold snap<br />
certainly focussed my mind<br />
where using the car was<br />
concerned, main roads were not<br />
too bad but side roads were treacherous. A big<br />
thank you to our volunteer gritters and also to<br />
the council outside staff who did a great job<br />
with the Town pavements. It ended up being a<br />
mini holiday for some and very exciting for the<br />
children.<br />
Thanks to all those who contacted or attended<br />
Breckland Air Quality Consultation, your ideas<br />
and comments were very helpful at the meeting<br />
we had last week. Unfortunately, there will not<br />
be a quick fix, Norfolk County Council will I think<br />
be doing a traffic survey and basic solutions<br />
tried in the first instance, we will update you<br />
as this develops. This situation has been with<br />
us for a number of years, in the meantime<br />
lorry and traffic generally has increased, the<br />
A1065running through the town can’t cope<br />
with traffic congestion without repercussions.<br />
I’m very pleased Breckland and NCC have taken<br />
on this project.<br />
The Town Council with the help of the Town<br />
Team have started to revisit the toilets once<br />
again.<br />
This is joy to my ears as our present facilities<br />
are expensive to run and because of the design<br />
makes it a meeting point for drug users. In turn<br />
it has been expressed by some young people<br />
that it is a place to be avoided. We shall work<br />
on it, but like everything we shall have to find<br />
that pocket of money from somewhere!<br />
Lastly our lovely town clock that is rather<br />
erratic It is the towns clock and our average<br />
spending on it is £900 a year. Thoughts within<br />
the Council was to make it a digital mechanism<br />
to make it more reliable, this was muted with<br />
the Diocese who came back to us saying that<br />
could not be done.<br />
We have written back to ask advice on how to<br />
proceed, interestingly enough Aylsham have<br />
had so much trouble and expense they’ve<br />
stopped theirs altogether We don’t want this<br />
for <strong>Swaffham</strong> but in the meantime apologies<br />
for any inconvenience.<br />
