Doesn’t time fly, this is the 50th edition of the
Swaffham Newsletter since Iceni Partnership took
on publishing your monthly magazine. A big thank
you from us for all your contributions which help
fill an average of 36 pages per issue, 12 months a
year. Many thanks to all our advertisers too, your
continued support of this community asset is much
appreciated. By no means least, thank you to all the
volunteer distributors, past and present, who make
publishing the newsletter viable. Here’s to the next 50.
‘Inspiring Iceni’ Photo Competition
Next month we will be launching a photography
competition with the theme of ‘Inspring Iceni’
to celebrate the beauty of our area. This will be
a perfect opportunity for both professional and
amateur photographers to showcase their talents
to visitors from near and far. There will also be
the possibility of the photographs entered being
exhibited in Gallery Iceni and being published in a
spread in the newsletter.
The only restriction on content is that the pictures
must be taken in the Iceni area. A condition of entry
will be that the Iceni Partnership has permission to
use any of the photographs for our marketing and
publicity to promote the area.
Look out for full details coming soon!
Popular artist at Gallery Iceni
Ingrida, or ‘Danila’, went to art college in her younger
days and has a background in textile design and
dressmaking. Over the course of her creative career
she created many unique outfits. Now in retirement
Danila dedicates all of her free time to developing
new artwork.
Danila’s favourite artists are the painters Monet and
Cecil Kennedy, whose style greatly inspire her. She is
particularly interested in recreating the methods of
painting they used.
You may have already admired Danila’s unusual
ribbon needlework pieces, which were on display in
Gallery Iceni throughout March and received much
praise. Next month sees Danila returning to the
gallery, this time working in the medium of oil paint
like the famous artists she so admires.
All artworks displayed are available to purchase, so
please feel free to pop in and take a look. It’s free to view.
The Nicholas Hamond Academy
Supporting ‘one of our own’
We are proud to support our students fundraising
efforts for ‘one of their own’ during March. Several
weeks of events are planned in order to raise as much
money as possible in support of the family of TNHA
student Archie Ramshaw and the inevitable expenses
they will incur whilst he undergoes a bone marrow
transplant. The campaign launched on Friday 9th
March with staff wearing silly wigs and creating a noisy
welcome into school including balloons, party poppers
and whistles. BBC Local Radio attended and the podcast
will be available on our website. There are many other
‘fun’ events planned – keep your eyes peeled for further
details. Should you wish to donate please contact the
academy on 01760 721480 or office@tnha.org.uk.
Evaluating resources for essential life skills
First aid is an essential life skill which enables young
people to safely help themselves and others; and can
even save lives. Students are enjoying participating in
a research project run by the British Red Cross giving
them the opportunity to learn about first aid using
specialised resources aimed at young people. As
part of the research, students will complete a short
questionnaire before and after learning, to help the
Red Cross evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching
resources used.
6 7
Raid on the Ramparts
Battering rams, catapults and fire balls were just
some of the ways that students considered when
planning a raid at the Castle Acre ruins. Learning
about how castles were attacked and defended
was part of a history trip when learning about life
in medieval times. On returning to school students
worked together to make replicas of the weapons used
and presented their own mini battles to their peers.
VI form sign up
Swaffham’s VI Form Centre is busy recruiting and signing
up students for courses in Years 12 and 13 starting in
September 2018. Students interested should contact
Mr. Segar, Head of VI Form, at the academy on 01760
721480 or email: office@tnha.org.uk.
Swaffham Junior Academy
Team Holkham at SJA:
This term Year 5, at Swaffham Junior Academy, are
learning about transport, focussing on air transport.
We started with an inspirational trip to the Imperial
War Museum at Duxford,
where we were able to
see a whole variety of
aircraft. We were even
lucky enough to see a
Spitfire taking off! Just
after the half-term break,
we were very fortunate
to be visited by Corporal
Steven Davies from RAF
Marham. He explained
all about the work
that the military do in
transporting things by
air. Harvey asked how
some planes are transported, and it turns out that
you can fit a smaller plane inside a larger aircraft by
detaching the wings first!
Corporal Steven Davies explained how a large vehicle
is used to reverse heavy machinery onto the back of
an aircraft.
In science, we have been learning all about the
different forces which act on aircraft, investigating
air resistance using parachutes and gravity using
different masses. Later on this term, we will be
making our own model aircrafts in Design Technology
– we will have to use our knowledge of air resistance
to make them streamlined.
As part of our focus on extended writing across
the curriculum, we produced information texts
comparing the Spitfire with the Harrier Jump Jet –
two British aircraft from very different eras.

Our Lady of Pity Swaffham
Japanese researchers have discovered that
the ancient practice of Shinrin-Yoku, or ‘Forest
bathing’ can help reduce stress, reduce blood
pressure and even help with depression. Forest
bathing refers to allowing the forest to envelope
you with its energy. We all know how lovely it
is to walk in the woods, breath the woodland
air, smell the wonderful fragrances, listen to the
birds and feel the gentle breeze. The Japanese
put great emphasis on the presence of great
trees especially the very old ones. In Japan there
are forty four accredited Shinrin- Yoku forests.
But we do not need to travel to Japan to seek out
such a forest. There are little oasis’s near to all of
us. It might even be your back garden if you have
one. Nature’s beauty and energy are all around
us, but we often pass it by without appreciating
it. Even very populated areas have their share
of trees. Take a leisurely stroll and you soon
realise they are there. If I have something that
is troubling me or I just feel out of kilter, a walk
to the duck pond will often put me right. There
I find still water, waving reeds, Willow trees and
ducks of course! It’s hard to be obsessed by the
modern world when we are surrounded by the
ancient one. The natural world has great power
to lift your spirit. It reminds us that we are part of
it all, not separate from it.
Have you heard about NHS Enhanced Summary
Care Records??
If you are registered with a GP practice in England
you should have a ‘Standard Summary Care Record’
(unless you’ve previously chosen to opt out). It
holds important information about your health,
the medicines you are taking, (including any bad
reactions) or any allergies you’ve had or suffer from.
You can now sign up for an ‘Enhanced Summary Care
Record’. These have more detailed information about
your medical history, illnesses, health problems,
operations and vaccinations. It also includes how you
would like to be treated, such as where you would
prefer to receive care, what support you may need,
and who should be contacted for further information
relating to you. These ‘Enhanced Summary Care
Records’ are particularly useful if you are taken into
hospital unexpectedly, or are away from home and
need medical attention (in England). In stressful
times details about your medication and health can
sometimes be difficult to remember, or in extreme
circumstances the healthcare team is not able to
ask you the information. If you are signed up for an
‘Enhanced Summary Care Record’, the health and care
professionals involved in your treatment can make
better and safer decisions about your medication
and can begin your care sooner. Your consent is still
needed to access your records, except in extreme
emergency situations, when the medical team would
take the appropriate decisions. If you would like your
medical records updated to an ‘Enhanced Summary
Care Record’, just ask at reception for a form to fill in
and sign. Don’t delay; speak to your reception team
as soon as possible.
Pharmacy Opening Hours
Recently the opening hours of the pharmacy
Swaffham have changed – the pharmacy opens
each day between 9.00am and 12.30pm and again
from 2.30pm until 6.00pm. The Necton pharmacy
remains unchanged and opens between 9.00am and
12.00pm, and from 2.30pm until 5.00pm.
SMS Text Appointment Reminders
Don’t forget to sign up for SMS Text Appointment
Reminders – this can help cut down on the amount
of appointments which are missed or forgotten. 85
of our patients in January and 97 in February didn’t
show up for their booked appointments - more
importantly they didn’t ring to cancel them. If you no
longer need a booked appointment, please respect
your Drs and take the time cancel the appointment.
This can then be allocated to another patient. Similar
figures for ‘Did not show’ are reported all across the
NHS regions – let’s all try to reduce this number.
Swaffham Rotary Club
President’s Corner
By the time this article is published,
Easter will be upon us, or even just
past. I hope everyone had an enjoyable
time. And a week before Easter Swaffham Rotary
Club will have held their Bollywood night. At the time
of writing this is still to come, but it promises to be
an enjoyable evening, with Indian food and dance. I
will report on this event in next month’s article. We
held raffles for 2 Easter hampers to raise funds to be
distributed to charities, and we want to thank The
George Hotel and The 20 Churchwardens for selling
entries to the raffles.
On a sadder note, in February one of our members,
Barry Briggs, died, after a painful illness. Barry, a
proud Yorkshireman, had transferred to Swaffham
Rotary from the Dereham Club about 3 years ago,
and in that time had made a valuable contribution
to our Club’s activities and fellowship. We will miss
his friendship, practicality and sense of humour, and
our thoughts are with his wife (and fellow-Rotarian)
Nancy.
Barry was a keen golfer, and a staunch supporter of
our annual Charity Golf Day. Planning is well under
way for this year’s event, which will be held at
Swaffham Golf Club on Monday 23 July. This year we
are supporting Big C (Norfolk’s Cancer Charity) and
SSAFA (the Forces’ Charity). If anyone is interested in
entering a team of 4 for the Golf Day, please contact
me for details at bill.muir13@talktalk.net, or on
01760 788084. We are also seeking donations of
items that can be auctioned on the day, and for raffle
prizes. In addition, local businesses can sponsor
holes on the course. As with possible entries, I can
provide details. Please consider supporting the Golf
Day and these great local charities.
Our usual programme of meetings has continued.
Sue Gattuso from the Swaffham Museum spoke to us
about the history of Swaffham, giving a fascinating
insight into the development of the town, by
reference to various buildings constructed over
different historical periods. We have also had a
talk from Robin Wraight, who runs the Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards (RYLA) for East Anglia. RYLA is a
personal development programme for young people,
taking place at Grafham Water over a week of
intensive activity in September. It involves a mixture
of “outward bound” type activities and discussion
work in teams, and nurtures self-confidence, teambuilding
and problem-solving skills. Swaffham Rotary
Club tries to find a candidate each year, and over the
years have received extremely positive feed-back
from the candidates, who invariably feel they have
benefited from the experience.
Swaffham Jazz Club
Our March session saw a full house welcome for their first
visit to the Club the well established local Dixieland band,
The Nene Valley Jazz Group. As did the original marching
bands that gave birth to jazz, they perform mostly outside in
the open air and make no concessions for playing indoors,
having a full-on sound at all times.
Their leader, Bill Brewer, plays both trumpet and trombone.
I have never come across this double before, the
embouchures being so different in each case. The pressure
in playing the trumpet is considerable and needs rockhard
lips, but Bill could switch effortlessly to the trombone
midway through a number and execute a succession of liptrills,
which requires very flexible lips. He also had a good
comedy act going with his father Neale on sax and vocals.
The other two soloists were Pete Scott, clarinet, and Ed
Reed, guitar.
The tight-knit rhythm section were Mal Ashby-drums,
Martin Haley-banjo and Jeff Scullard-bass. I was a bit
disappointed that none of this section played a solo. I know
Jeff can play a fine solo and I like to hear the (occasional!)
banjo and drum solo.
The band’s repertoire is drawn mainly from the 1920’s and
30’s and included many well known numbers such as I
Can’t Give You Anything But Love Baby and That’s My Baby.
They finished with I’ll Be Seeing You, which is true! They’re
coming back to the Club next October.
Swaffham Arts
A close look at Musical Angels with Martyn
Clarke was a reminder of the beautiful works of
art in the windows of our churches. The quality
of the early stained and painted glass from
Oxborough Church was particularly poignant
in the detail of expression on the faces of the
angels. That they have survived for hundreds
of years, and look as fresh as ever, only adds
wonder to their delicate presence.
Three years ago, Steve Bingham, directing
a chamber orchestra, gave a stunning
performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
This month the Ad Hoc Strings from Ely,
directed by Steve, are returning with Serenade
for Strings, an afternoon of music including
Mozart “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” and Elgar
Serenade for strings, two well-known and wellloved
pieces. Steve is not only a wonderful
musician, but also a superb communicator, and
always has a great rapport with his audience.
Swaffham Evening WI
The March meeting was held at 7pm
on 7th March at the Church Rooms.
We listened to an amusing Poem read
by one of our members and gave out our monthly
birthday cards. Our speaker this month told us
about a voluntary organisation called Norfolk Blood
Bikes. This is run entirely by volunteers who operate
mainly during the night to get blood and other much
needed fluids to our county hospitals. They even
take donated breast milk to Neo Natal units.
The speaker covered much more than I can include
here but he was extremely interesting and it was an
eye opener.
After the talk and many questions we had a social
break and afterwards concluded our monthly
business which this month mainly consisted of
arranging a trip to West Acre Theatre and the
transport for auditions. The raffle was drawn and the
meeting was closed.
Next month we are looking forward to hearing Rachel
Duffield (a favourite of ours) give us her version of
Elizabeth I. We meet on the first Wednesday of each
month so if you would like to come along as a visitor
you will be very welcome. Contact our secretary on
Sporle Afternoon WI
February’s meeting was a very busy
one and it was good to see so many
members who had recovered from
the “bug”. The meeting had been made an open one
as the subject and speaker were of interest to many
people as it was all about Marham Air Base and its
future. Our speaker, an RAF member of considerable
service, was very clued up on the changes already
made and those outstanding changes still to take
place so that the base can take the new fighter
planes coming this autumn. Many of us expressed
sorrow to be losing the Tornado as it has become a
regular sight in our skies for many years. The new
plane in turn will become a familiar sight and sound.
The speaker was happy to answer many questions
especially from our gentlemen visitors both before
and during our break for tea and cake.
The regular club business followed with the financial
situation, possible outing venues, and a lively debate
over the resolutions. Members were of the opinion
that we should have something closer to home to
campaign for, something our WI weight could maybe
influence. Birthdays and the raffle then followed and
a different kind of poem closed the meeting.
Sporle afternoon WI each 3rd Tuesday of the month.
Pickenhams WI
The meeting on March 13th in
North Pickenham church at 2pm
was opened by Carolyn Vincent
with an amusing poem about her new“ socks.”
Our speaker was one of our members Sue Potter
who spoke about “ Her Nursing Journey”. It
started with her training at Great Ormond Street
Children’s Hospital and this was followed by an
interesting career in the Queen Alexandra Nursing
Corps, both here and abroad. She then returned
to civilian life to fund raise and open the early
Children’s hospices in East Anglia having seen the
need for them. Finally, she did community nursing
in very rural Scotland. A fascinating story to tell.
This was followed by our “ Tea “ and the Business
part of-the meeting.
Matters arising:
• Nar Valley Group WI’s - it was discussed again
about joining this group.
• Arts and Crafts Group - They have met and have
some projects in mind for the future
Future Plans:
• Coffee and chats restarting in Swaffham monthly.
• The Cinema Club continues.
• Suffragette celebration Tea and talk at Broom
Hall on Tuesday the 15th May
Beachamwell & District WI
Our March meeting was due to take
place on an evening when the village
was firmly in the grip of snow and
ice. We had been looking forward to
exploring the art and architecture of
the ‘Art Deco’ period. But local driving and walking
conditions were treacherous and would have meant
a hazardous journey for our speaker, so we felt we
had to cancel the meeting.
Now we are anticipating our next get-together.
Penelope Watkins will talk on the subject ‘Know your
shape, enjoy your assets’. Intrigued? We are. We
think it may involve underwear and fashion! Why
not come and find out more?
Visitors and prospective members are very welcome
as always. We are an informal and friendly group and
we enjoy seeing new faces. The meeting takes place
in Beachamwell Village Hall on Thursday, 5th April at
7.30pm. Enquiries: 01366 327023 or 01366 328589
Swaffham Lioness Club - the Pride
of Swaffham
Our Multiple District (National) Conference was held
at the Marriott Hotel, Huntingdon on 16th – 18th
February, and was a most enjoyable and informative
weekend. It is great to meet up with Lionesses from
other Districts for some fun and fellowship.
We had a speaker from “Tiny Tickers” our Chairman’s
chosen charity for the year, which provides support
for babies diagnosed with congenital heart defects.
We have donated £100 towards this worthy cause.
To top off a lovely weekend, we won the Scrapbook
competition trophy again this year.
On 24th February we hosted our East Anglia District
Lioness Meeting here in Swaffham Lionesses Karen
Nye and Rosemary Skea were awarded Membership
Certificates for completing 25 Years of Service in
Swaffham Lioness Club.
On Saturday 31st March we will be running our charity
Easter Egg Tombola stall in the Assembly Rooms, and
will be attending the Mayor’s Civic Reception on 7th
April.
Swaffham & District Lions
Due to poor weather conditions
Swaffham Lions held their 3rd
Annual Pancake Race inside the
Assemble Rooms this year. With
eight teams of two from the
Lions, Lionesses, Home Hospice, the Sacred Heart
School, Iceni Partnership, Ward Gethin Archer and
Louise & Ben, the races were very competitive,
with the local brother and sister winning the final
against Ward Gethin Archer. The engraved frying
pan trophy was presented by Lion President Pam
Tallon to the winners. Before the finals race the
under-fives held a series of fun races much to the
amusement of the mums and dads.
The Lions Clubs of the British Isles are celebrating
the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International:
100 years of proud service to our communities.
We were delighted that our Patron, HRH, The
Countess of Wessex G.C.V.O. hosted a Reception at
Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, 28th February
to help Lions Clubs mark this milestone.
The work that Swaffham Lions do in the community
has been recognized by this honour and completes
a year of celebrations that included a Civic
reception by Swaffham Town Council, 208k cycle
ride, a month at the Tesco store, a charity quiz,
children’s peace poster competition and a thanks
giving service at St Peter & Paul church attended
by 200 people.
Swaffham Lions President Pam Tallon had the
honour of representing the club at the Palace for
Lions Clubs International Centenary Celebrations.
At the reception, the Countess of Wessex said she
was honoured to be the patron of the Lions. When
she visited different countries she was proud when
she saw the Lions Logo in hospitals or clinics. She
also said she gets the praise, but it’s the Lions’
membership that spends hours doing the work all
over the world.
Following support for local children who have
serious illnesses, Swaffham Lions have donated
£500 to the Archie Ramshaw appeal. In October
2010, the life of Archie Ramshaw changed forever.
Then aged just seven, Archie was diagnosed with
a rare form of anaemia known as Congenital
Sideroblastic Anaemia. The condition means
Archie’s bone marrow is unable to produce
15
healthy blood cells. Sideroblastic Anaemia stops
Archie’s body transferring the iron in his blood into
haemoglobin, which red cells need to transport
oxygen efficiently. Now aged 14, the teenager,
who lives in Swaffham with his older brother Harry
and mother and father Theresa and Craig, has had
more than 150 blood transfusions and takes 11
tablets a day. The Lions are also looking at ways
of supporting Archie and his family during his time
with treatment, with further donations of time or
money.
Swaffham Lions were at Swaffham’s Tesco store for
two days collecting for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil
Appeal. Lions throughout the country support this
great cause, which provides nurses for patients
who have cancer as well as running nine hospices
and a helper home service.
As part of the 100 years celebrations of Lions
International, the Lions have set a target of feeding
5000 people with food donations. Swaffham
Lions have answered the call and club members
have supplied 44kgs of food, which will go to the
Norwich food bank along with other donations
from Lions clubs in East Anglia. You don’t need a
miracle when you have Lions.

Merle Boddy Centre
Thank you to all the lovely people who attended
our quiz. The theme was very loosely connected to
Valentine’s. The winners were a girl’s night out, they
won a bottle of wine and chocs. Our lovely, young
farmers came at the bottom but didn’t go home empty
handed, with something nice and gooey to tuck into.
We made a fantastic £472. All our supporters are just
the best. Our next fundraiser was on 16th March with
an Easter bingo, fantastic prizes and a raffle.
I once saw on the back of a Landrover that young
farmers do best in green wellies, well our local young
farmers are the best in what ever they wear. On the
night of the quiz we were presented with a cheque for
£300, doesn’t this just go to prove that the younger
generation do care. I am so very pleased that we have
made such a brilliant connection with such a fantastic
group of people. Many, many thanks to all of you.
The Merle Boddy Centre has had its face lift. We now
have 3 of the best looking loos in town, one has a
shower, so really there is no need for me to go home!
At the same time as the major refurb of the toilets, we
took the opportunity to re-decorate the main room
and the kitchen too. My thanks goes to all of my staff
and volunteers, who pitched in and did a fantastic job
on not only painting but, a major turn out of things
that were of no longer any use to us. These things
were not thrown out, but recycled.Thank you also to
Candy, Kerry and John, who helped a great deal to
achieve our new look. We also had two of the nicest
professional painters, Paul and Jonny, who pointed us
in the right direction and did a top job on the ceilings
and the kitchen. The building work was contracted
to R&I builders who did a stunning job. Many thanks
to all you lovely men who drank our tea and ate our
Age Concern Swaffham & District
April and therefore Spring has arrived and we at Age Concern have our loins girded up for doing what we
can to continue assisting older folk in the town and in the villages round about. There is still a bit of confusion
regarding what the difference is between Age UK and our own Age Concern organisation. Age UK is a large,
nationally based charity whereas we are a local group just for this area. Officially we are “Friends” of Age UK
and have a particularly close relationship with Age UK Norfolk, in Norwich. All three organisations operate for
the benefit of people over 60. We have just under 200 members (there is no upper limit) and it costs only £5
per year to join. If interested, please contact our Membership Secretary Vicky, see details below.
What do we do? For our members generally we hold a free monthly entertainment meeting in the Assembly
Rooms, last Tuesday in the month, 2 pm, (in house) unless there is a trip out.
During the better weather we organise trips out by coach, three or four per year, plus a Christmas attraction of
some sort e.g. the Thursford Spectacular. John Clarke (see below) organises these, so please contact him for the
latest info. Upcoming events are:
April 24th – Sister Francis on her recent television series (in house)
May 29th - AGM and talk on Scams and Awareness (in house)
Our new Project Manager for Swaffham Support Services including befriending is Brad Stein who has replaced
Barbara Lock. We operate with funding from the Big Lottery our popular Hospital Buddy Service. Volunteers to
act as drivers are always needed. Our Coordinator, Clair has recently resigned her position
and we are now recruiting a replacement.
For those lonely people at home we also provide a Befriending Service and again if you
would like to consider volunteering to help visit, you would be most welcome. Our office is
open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 4 pm from where an Information
Pack for both Buddying and Befriending can be obtained. Please contact Pam in the
office, phone (07393 981 295) or for general queries.
Please also contact John Clarke, Outings Organiser regarding trips out. Chair, Diane
Ashill Holme Hale Gardening Club
At our February meeting Kathy Gray gave an
enlightening talk about ‘The Plant Hunters’. There
has been an interest in collecting plants from other
parts of the world as far back as the Queen of Egypt
in 1495BC. In this country the Trandescant family in
the 16th and 17th centuries were early collectors
and gave their name to the tulip tree, Tradescantia
virginiana. But Kathy’s talk concentrated on four men
who, between the mid 18th and early 20th centuries,
collected thousands of specimens, many of which are
common features of our gardens today.
The first of these was Joseph Banks who made several
voyages with Captain Cook to South America, Tahiti,
New Zealand and Australia. His finds included the
passion flower, gardenia, jasmine, phormium, hebe
and leptospermum. He gave his name to Banksia
integrifolia, commonly known as coast banksia and
persuaded King George 111 to create the botanical
gardens at Kew.
Francis Masson was a gardener at Kew who made
several trips to South Africa in the late 18th century
bringing us Erica, protea, amaryllis, aloe and the arum
lily among many others. The Massonia lily is named
after him and the encephalartos he brought home
in 1775 is still thriving at Kew - probably the world’s
largest pot plant! He also introduced kniphofia,
pelagonium and agapanthus from North America
where he died in 1805.
David Douglas from Scotland did most of his
exploration in North America in the early 19th
century. He is known primarily for the introduction of
the douglas fir but, as the UK had only three varieties
of conifer at that time, most of the species we have
today are attributable to him. However, he was also
responsible for introducing solidago (golden rod),
aster, mahonia, penstemon and lupinus, the basis for
all our varieties of lupins today.
Kathy’s last plant hunter in this talk was Ernest
Wilson, who was sent to China in 1899 in search
of the hankerchief tree, Davidia involucrata. Along
the way his discoveries included acer griseum,
clematis armandii, meconopsis, magnolia sinensis
and rhododendron, the legacy of which can still be
seen at Sheringham Park. In the early 20th century
he moved to North America from where he gave us
viburnum, daphne and primula.
There were so many species mentioned in Kathy’s
talk it left us with the question ‘what on earth is
indigenous to this country?’ We obviously owe these
plant humters a great debt for providing our homes
and gardens with such a diverse array of plants.
WEA
Our course beginning in April focuses on the history
of rural life in East Anglia. Popular tutor Mary
Fewster has previously led courses in Swaffham on
transport, religion and industry in East Anglia and
she now returns with a course looking at a period
of major changes in the landscape, society and
economy of the area: Country Life: Rural East Anglia
1700 – 1900. Topics will include enclosure; the role
of the great estates and the influence of the squire
and the parson on rural society; and the lives of the
labouring poor and the rural unrest that flared from
time to time as a result of changes or conditions.
The course runs for 7 weeks starting on Friday 20th
April, 10am to 12 noon. The fee is £51. You are
welcome to attend the first session as a ‘taster’ for £7
with no obligation to continue. Fees may be waived
for those in receipt of benefits. Courses are held at
the Community Centre, Campingland, Swaffham.
Information about courses is available online at
attend. However there is no requirement to book
in advance: just come along and you will be very
welcome. Further information: Tel 01760 723558
Refit at the Red Lion
After a long process of upgrading the Red Lion we
can finally see a major improvement in the main bar,
weeks of repairs and upgrades we are happy to be
open and completely different to before. We are still
offering a great selection of drinks to compliment
our mouthwatering bar menu and delicious specials.
Women and Words
People who attended the Iceni Rural Writers’ event
in the George Hotel on 8 March were treated to an
interesting evening of readings from local writers.
Because it was International Women’s Day, the writers
chose readings connected to the theme of being
a woman. There was a mixture of fact and fiction;
poetry and prose - something for everybody in the
audience to enjoy.
The highlight of the evening was a reading by Heidi
Williamson, who grew up in Swaffham. She read from
her two published anthologies ‘Electric Shadow’ and
‘The Print Museum’. It was very interesting to hear
Heidi put her poems into context and we were given a
preview of three poems which will appear in her next
collection.
To end the evening several members of the audience
read pieces during an open mic slot. Leah Spencer
(secretary) said “The evening was a great success and
Iceni Rural Writers would like to thank Swaffham Town
Council for supporting this event. We plan to hold a
similar evening in June or July. Look out for details in
future Swaffham Newsletters!”
Wissey U3A
On Thursday 1st March the appropriately named
‘Beast from the East’ and storm ‘Emma’ from the
South visited the area to deposit great quantities
of unwanted snow and create as much havoc as
they possibly could. As a result, and much to the
dismay of many members, the monthly meeting
was duly cancelled. Although the presentation by
David Mason about Wildlife Photography was sadly
missed, David agreed to return again in 2019.
Members who had previously attended a Red Cross
First Aid course at Swaffham’s Community Centre
attended a refresher course on Monday 26th February
to experience some practical and possibly more
realistic first aid situations. The meeting started with
some video clips to illustrate appropriate responses
for various injuries. Members then responded to a
number of casualties who had injuries ranging from
Burns to Bleeding and there was one casualty who
was unresponsive and not breathing. This casualty
required Responders to use a dummy ‘Manikin’
for practising CPR techniques. Grateful thanks to
members of the ‘Swaffham Players’ who kindly acted
as casualties on the day and added a greater sense of
realism to the first aid situations.
Members of the Table Tennis group met Downham
Market U3A’s team for another friendly tournament
at Denver village hall and after some exciting games
were treated to refreshments with teas and cakes.
A new group entitled ’Family History’ has recently
been proposed and a workshop entitled ‘Learn
Russian Words’ is to be held at the Great Britain
Centre on 30th March. If these subjects interest you,
or if you have an interesting hobby or pastime which
you would like to share with others why not make
enquires about joining the Wissey U3A.
The U3A is an international movement whose aims are
the education of retired members of the community
Community Litter Pick
On the 20th February staff from Hughes Electrical
were joined by children from Swaffham CE VC Infant
and Nursery School to help tidy up the town. The
litter pick began around Campingland as it’s close to
the school and safe for the children. We then headed
towards the church. We are hoping to continue to
organise further days like this throughout the year.
Wanted – Volunteers
We are currently looking for volunteers to work in the
Museum. We require Stewards for 3 hr sessions (10-
1 or 1-4) And help with the Education team to work
mainly with school visits. An interest in Egyptology
would be helpful. For further information contact
Steve Gregory 01760 721230
Emma was guest speaker at our last meeting, explaining
the work she does (all voluntary!) and how the records
are computerised. She brought with her a few items
which have caused a headache for the Museum during
a recent inventory. Why has something been saved?
What does it have to do with Swaffham, or basically
- just what is it! She also showed the group copies of
some of the records which the archives keep and which
researchers can use - by request - in the Archive Room.
Emma can be contacted via the Museum.
The Swaffham Hare
Those of you who follow us on social media may have
Community Fridge Update
The Swaffham Community Fridge has now been open
for over 3 months and we have seen great success
already. Thanks to our regular donations from local
businesses such as Starlings grocers and Wellbread
Bakery we are always well stocked with a great mix
of fruit, veg, cakes, pastries and other baked goods.
Thanks to word of mouth we are seeing steadily
increasing numbers of visitors to the fridge, with
many now regularly popping by daily or weekly.
As the fridge is part of a Breckland Council initiative
to prevent food waste to landfill, we are required
to weigh in and out all of the food from the fridge
and keep a written record. From our records we are
pleased to announce we have already saved well
over a kilo of food from landfill at the time of writing.
If you would like to donate or take food from the
fridge, then feel free to visit between 9am and 4pm
Monday to Friday. The fridge is located just outside
the Iceni Partnership office in the Community Centre.
Hospice Support
Rapid progress towards our major event this year
“The Relay Together”, on Sunday the 17th June at the
Rugby Club is being made as Teams are beginning to
place their names to take part. For further information
please contact the Home Hospice Support Team on
Swaffham 01760 722937 where posters of the day
are available to collect. Come along and enjoy the
fun at this community project knowing that you are
supporting a vital Charity within our Town.
The Home Hospice Support Team were involved in the
annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race organised by
the Lions of Swaffham held at the Assembly Rooms,
but owing to the inclement weather conditions, the
event was transferred to indoors of the building. As
in the past it was very well supported and great fun
too.
The Quiz Night that was scheduled for March 2nd at
the Conservative Club had to be cancelled caused by
the Beast from the East. It will now take place on April
12th with a 7.30pm start and costing £5.00 per head
with a maximum of six per table. Contact: Adrian on
Swaffham 01760 724304 for further information.
The Charity’s annual Town Collection takes place on
May 12th and if you are interested in standing for an
hour or so, then I am sure the Home Support Team at
the office would be pleased to hear from you, or you
can contact Adrian.
The Charity are seeking out further volunteers to
serve and support the Fundraising Committee in
their work to raise vital income ensuring the survival
of the Hospice. The commitment is left to those who
have the desire to assist us, but be rest assured you
will certainly enjoy meeting those who already give
their time for this wonderful cause. There is always a
need for the Committee to receive new ideas to take
forward for planning future events. On the other
hand why not organise an event for us and if you
require assistance then the Committee will only be
too pleased to work with you.
Support Team on Swaffham 01760 722937.
Mind Body Spirit
Want to relax and release stress?
Well Kirtan could be your answer.
A local Swaffham lady Chrissy Willis runs a number
of workshops for people to enjoy and relax as you
sing/chant beautiful ancient mantras. You will
sing together simple melodies in call and response
style and don’t be concerned about how well you
sing, just relax and enjoy the meditative benefits.
Tuition and words are provided and explained.
Kirtan, is singing/chanting beautiful ancient
mantras/melodies in a call and response
style. It’s a shared offering and you don’t have
to be concerned with how well you sing, just
enjoy the benefit it brings to you. Another way to
describe Kirtan is perhaps a singing version of your
36
physical yoga practice. It is a truly beautiful way
to express the profound feeling and experiences
that come to us during meditation and in our
physical asana practice. It is a great way to release
stress and tension, relax and melt into a larger
experience, some may know it as Kirtan-yoga, as
an integral part of bhakti-yoga, which is the yoga
of developing pure spiritual love.
Often described as people coming together Kirtan
is a family-like atmosphere within a music session
which gives the result of deep meditation. More
specifically, it is the call and response singing
used in spiritual tradition from India.
Kirtan is a ‘sanskrit’ word meaning “to chant”
referring to the process of chanting and it
includes a sense of repeating and describing,
which makes it very simple to learn. Specifically,
it refers to the glorification of the Supreme. You
may doubtlessly be familiar with other sanskrit
words such as, yoga, avatar, mantra, guru and
karma, which are in use worldwide and perhaps
in the coming years, we can expect kirtan to
become another word that will be more familiar
as it starts to experience general usage around
you.
The origins of Kirtan go back to India where
people have been singing about Rama, Krishna,
Govinda, etc in their local languages and in
Sanskrit, for a millennia as a non-denominational
language for the universal Spirit; the song of the
soul. Traditionally it is sung in Sanskrit, but in
today’s times it can be heard in many different
languages, including English. You can think of it
as a singalong.
Chrissy runs classes out of Sporle with her April
classes on 12th and 26th April usually they start
at 7.30pm. Finishing with a hot drink and open
discussions. She will be delighted to discuss this
with anyone interested so for further information
please ring Chrissy 07957 405823.
One final note the next Mind Body Spirit Exhibition
will be in The Assembly Rooms on Saturday 28th
April where a vast number of beautiful stalls with
Spiritual Gifts, Healing, Readings and Therapies
stand by for your assistance. A footnote to say
Chrissy does attend these events so if you want
to chat to her about Kirtan, you’ll find her serving
up teas and coffees.
Thank you very much everyone for reading about
all the different aspects we can offer. There will
be more and more as another year develops.
In Touch With Your Town
‘In Touch with your Town’ is
put together by the Town Clerk
Richard Bishop or occasionally
by the Deputy Town Clerk Claire
Smith. It deals with some of the
most topical items of the day and
the odd item where the Council want to share
information with the Town.
LET IT SNOW – True Grit!
Well that was a little bit chilly wasn’t it? There we
are sitting pretty almost at the end of February
and into early March, and down comes the snow
in abundance this year. As the Country ground to
a halt as temperatures plummeted to -8 degrees,
much to the amusement of those who live in Siberia
coping with -45 degrees, and going about their
everyday live as normal, believing their weather
was being kind to them in their springtime at -32
degrees.
Our grateful thanks to our small team of voluntary
gritters, the number of volunteers has steadily
reduced year on year over the past five years, as
the Town has become complacent with mild winters
being the norm. Our thanks also to the outside staff
of Swaffham Town Council who did their best to
keep the Town Centre pathways clear, they worked
extremely hard and beyond their call of duty.
Swaffham was the first Town or Parish in Norfolk to
introduce a voluntary gritting scheme some years
back, it worked really well for a couple of years, but
other Towns and Parishes have overtaken us now.
We were unprepared and lacking in numbers.
As usual the thanks, compliments and good wishes
were balanced with the odd inappropriate or
ridiculous comments or complaints. “What do I pay
my Council Tax for?” “You haven’t cleared Theatre
Street Car Park.” “My street isn’t cleared, what
are you going to do about it?” “This is disgusting,
the Council have let us down again.” Most of the
negatives started with “You haven’t done this…” or
“When are you going to do that…” There were of
course some comments that we cannot print in this
newsletter...
The assumption that some people make is that
clearing snow is someone else’s problem, or
someone else’s job, whereas with our voluntary
gritting scheme, it is down to you. As austerity cuts
have worked there way through local government,
most outlying estates will never see a gritting lorry
as County Council budgets are cut year on year,
neither will they see any volunteers, particularly
if you haven’t volunteered… Norfolk County
Council prioritise the main road network, and
their resources are stretched to the full during the
37
period when snow falls. The Town Council staff
clear pavements in the Town Centre, everywhere
else is down to you.
We have had the issue of private use of grit in grit
bins again this year. We are currently reviewing
whether we need bins in new locations, and
whether some bins need to be re-located as they
have been misused. The grit is supplied by Norfolk
County Council for use on the public pavements
only.
ShopAppy to launch in Swaffham
The Breckland launch of ShopAppy is set to take
place in Swaffham during April, so watch this
space. Swaffham is set to be the Flagship Town for
Norfolk, as over 20 independent local businesses
are already signed up to this scheme. Find out more
on www.breckland.gov.uk/shopappy This will bring
a greater digital presence for our Independent
Traders and more of a level playing field with our
National multiples, as click and collect will add a
new dimension to the town.
If we are ever going to attract new independent
traders to invest and trade in this town, we have
to patronise, and regularly support the traders that
we already have. A greater on-line presence will
mean that at least they have a fighting chance to
compete.
DATE FOR YOUR DIARY
The Annual Town Assembly this year will be held
on Wednesday 27th April 6.30pm at the Town Hall.
IN MY BACK YARD
The Swaffham Neighbourhood Plan is a communityled
document for guiding the future development
of our Town. It is about the use and development
of land over the next 20 years. The plan will set out
a vision and aspirations for the future development
of the Town and will be an important document
that will help influence and control the way our
town changes in the future, including any new
housing developments
This is the third in a series of Articles designed
to give you the latest information on how we
are progressing with the development of our
Neighbourhood Plan. Firstly, we want to remind
you of our two key Consultation Events in April. It
is important that we hear from as many people as
possible about the way in which we all envisage
our Town changing and developing over the next

20 years. All age groups welcome.
This is the third in a series of Articles designed
We also want to remind you of our two key
Consultation Events in April. It is important that we
and developing over the next 20 years. All age
The Dates are Saturday 14th April, 10am to 3pm
and Tuesday 17th April, 3pm to 7pm. VENUE:
Assembly Rooms in Swaffham
Emerging policy ideas fall under the following
broad headings:
• Housing and the Build Environment
• Environment and Landscape
• Community and Services
• Business and Employment
• Transport and Access.
One of our ongoing tasks is to continue to consult
with Organisations, Charities, Clubs, local business
etc to gather evidence to develop the policies
that go into the Neighbourhood Plan. This work is
underway but if you would like to ensure that your
input is heard we would welcome the chance to
come and meet you.
Another Opportunity to hear more about the Plan is
to attend the event known as the “Town Assembly”
This is held in the evening of Wed 25th April in the
Assembly Rooms. There will be a short presentation
about where things stand and the process leading
to a formal consultation when the draft plan will be
considered by all residents.
The Steering group met again on the 5th March
and reviewed what was emerging on the main
policy ideas. It also looked at what is known as
a “Scoping report” which helps review relevant
plans and policies, sets out the baseline data for
Swaffham and identifies the key sustainability
issues. This in turn leads to a “Sustainability
Appraisal Framework” which will be used to assess
the emerging N P policies and to consult Breckland
District Council.
An initial set of draft policy ideas continue to be
developed during March and these will be an
important part of the Consultation events in April.
Did you see our centre page pullout?
In case you managed to miss it, we are giving
the public the opportunity to give their views on
Swaffham Neighbourhood Plan this month.
To ensure your opinions are heard we ask that
you please try to attend one of the meetings at
Swaffham Assembly Rooms on either Saturday 14th
April, 10am - 3pm or Tuesday 17th April, 5pm - 7pm.
The Swaffham Neighbourhood Plan will be a
document written by the community to guide future
development of our parish over the next 20 years. If
successful at Referendum the Plan will become part
of the statutory development planning process for
the area. The Plan will be written over the summer.
From the Mayor’s Parlour
Dear All,
I must say that the cold snap
certainly focussed my mind
where using the car was
concerned, main roads were not
too bad but side roads were treacherous. A big
thank you to our volunteer gritters and also to
the council outside staff who did a great job
with the Town pavements. It ended up being a
mini holiday for some and very exciting for the
children.
Thanks to all those who contacted or attended
Breckland Air Quality Consultation, your ideas
and comments were very helpful at the meeting
we had last week. Unfortunately, there will not
be a quick fix, Norfolk County Council will I think
be doing a traffic survey and basic solutions
tried in the first instance, we will update you
as this develops. This situation has been with
us for a number of years, in the meantime
lorry and traffic generally has increased, the
A1065running through the town can’t cope
with traffic congestion without repercussions.
I’m very pleased Breckland and NCC have taken
on this project.
The Town Council with the help of the Town
Team have started to revisit the toilets once
again.
This is joy to my ears as our present facilities
are expensive to run and because of the design
makes it a meeting point for drug users. In turn
it has been expressed by some young people
that it is a place to be avoided. We shall work
on it, but like everything we shall have to find
that pocket of money from somewhere!
Lastly our lovely town clock that is rather
erratic It is the towns clock and our average
spending on it is £900 a year. Thoughts within
the Council was to make it a digital mechanism
to make it more reliable, this was muted with
the Diocese who came back to us saying that
could not be done.
We have written back to ask advice on how to
proceed, interestingly enough Aylsham have
had so much trouble and expense they’ve
stopped theirs altogether We don’t want this
for Swaffham but in the meantime apologies
for any inconvenience.
Mayor of Swaffham
