Our Lady of Pity Swaffham
Japanese researchers have discovered that
the ancient practice of Shinrin-Yoku, or ‘Forest
bathing’ can help reduce stress, reduce blood
pressure and even help with depression. Forest
bathing refers to allowing the forest to envelope
you with its energy. We all know how lovely it
is to walk in the woods, breath the woodland
air, smell the wonderful fragrances, listen to the
birds and feel the gentle breeze. The Japanese
put great emphasis on the presence of great
trees especially the very old ones. In Japan there
are forty four accredited Shinrin- Yoku forests.
But we do not need to travel to Japan to seek out
such a forest. There are little oasis’s near to all of
us. It might even be your back garden if you have
one. Nature’s beauty and energy are all around
us, but we often pass it by without appreciating
it. Even very populated areas have their share
of trees. Take a leisurely stroll and you soon
realise they are there. If I have something that
is troubling me or I just feel out of kilter, a walk
to the duck pond will often put me right. There
I find still water, waving reeds, Willow trees and
ducks of course! It’s hard to be obsessed by the
modern world when we are surrounded by the
ancient one. The natural world has great power
to lift your spirit. It reminds us that we are part of
it all, not separate from it.
Have you heard about NHS Enhanced Summary
Care Records??
If you are registered with a GP practice in England
you should have a ‘Standard Summary Care Record’
(unless you’ve previously chosen to opt out). It
holds important information about your health,
the medicines you are taking, (including any bad
reactions) or any allergies you’ve had or suffer from.
You can now sign up for an ‘Enhanced Summary Care
Record’. These have more detailed information about
your medical history, illnesses, health problems,
operations and vaccinations. It also includes how you
would like to be treated, such as where you would
prefer to receive care, what support you may need,
and who should be contacted for further information
relating to you. These ‘Enhanced Summary Care
Records’ are particularly useful if you are taken into
hospital unexpectedly, or are away from home and
need medical attention (in England). In stressful
times details about your medication and health can
sometimes be difficult to remember, or in extreme
circumstances the healthcare team is not able to
ask you the information. If you are signed up for an
‘Enhanced Summary Care Record’, the health and care
professionals involved in your treatment can make
better and safer decisions about your medication
and can begin your care sooner. Your consent is still
needed to access your records, except in extreme
emergency situations, when the medical team would
take the appropriate decisions. If you would like your
medical records updated to an ‘Enhanced Summary
Care Record’, just ask at reception for a form to fill in
and sign. Don’t delay; speak to your reception team
as soon as possible.
Pharmacy Opening Hours
Recently the opening hours of the pharmacy
Swaffham have changed – the pharmacy opens
each day between 9.00am and 12.30pm and again
from 2.30pm until 6.00pm. The Necton pharmacy
remains unchanged and opens between 9.00am and
12.00pm, and from 2.30pm until 5.00pm.
SMS Text Appointment Reminders
Don’t forget to sign up for SMS Text Appointment
Reminders – this can help cut down on the amount
of appointments which are missed or forgotten. 85
of our patients in January and 97 in February didn’t
show up for their booked appointments - more
importantly they didn’t ring to cancel them. If you no
longer need a booked appointment, please respect
your Drs and take the time cancel the appointment.
This can then be allocated to another patient. Similar
figures for ‘Did not show’ are reported all across the
NHS regions – let’s all try to reduce this number.
