So, go for professional images of the whole floor to get the
context of the whole piece, (obviously this does mean you can't
use the image in any other publication without permission).
By and large I do find it difficult to get good photos simply
because of the way mosaics are displayed. Even those taken
when they are being officially recorded can be quite
disappointing but this is understandable as they have to work
with the equipment they have to hand. This could change with
the increasing use of drones to record some sites (see below).
The quality of those in books is improving, the best I have seen
are the ones by Mehmet Onal such as 'Antioch Mosaics' and
'Mosaics of Zeugma', (published by A Turizm Yayinlari,
Istanbul, 2005). The photos in these books are pretty much the
best you will get. Some years back I corresponded by email with
the company responsible for them and they told me that it can
take up to two weeks to properly record one mosaic.
Unfortunately this does make the books quite expensive, for the
larger volumes they can be over £100. There is a smaller version
of the Zeugma one which you can get for about £30.00.
The next workshop
will be run here in
Bury St Edmund's
and will be on how
to set out a mosaic
pattern without
drawing it out.
