Lead vocalist and guitarist, Chad Kroeger and bassist, Ryan Peake, of the famed Canadian rock band, Nikelback, land at the Hanna airport to return to their roots
for filming a documentary. A small band concert was held in the Hanna Community Centre where they played with their former band members, Village Idiots,
along with seven other former music bands from Hanna. They played to a full house on Fri. Sept. 29.
Hanna RCMP thank those who assisted during storm
The recent winter storm created
extremely difficult situations
for motorists on Monday leaving
them stranded for extended
periods of time while work was
being done to get to them.
Many people were involved in
the response to this situation.
The Hanna RCMP Detachment
took 90 calls for service within a
20 hour period of time.
These calls were spread out
over a large geographic area.
This is an extraordinarily high
call volume obviously caused by
the winter storm.
RCMP, EMS, Fire crews, road
maintenance crews, phone repair
crews and the media all played a
part in the response to these
calls. Everyone worked
extremely hard under very difficult
circumstances.
The response from Hanna and
surrounding area residents was
amazing and is indicative of the
level of caring and compassion
people had during this difficult
time. The residents truly went
above and beyond during this
storm.
The Hanna Lodge and Bethel
Evangelical Church took in close
to 80 people that were stranded by
the storm. The Hanna United
Church was also prepared and
ready to take in more stranded
motorists.
There were even residents that
opened their homes to complete
strangers in need of shelter.
Farmers and members of
Hutterite colonies went out with
their machinery to assist with
opening up roads that were completely
blocked in an attempt to
allow first responders to get into
some of the hardest hit areas.
People on snow machines also
drove out to areas where people
were stranded to check on them
and provide water.
There are likely many more
examples. The RCMP would like
to thank everyone for the help
they provided and the stranded
Damaged power line and pole
A semi hauling a grader and
pickup-truck was involved in a
property damage motor vehicle
collision (MVC) in the early
morning hours of Sept. 25, 2017.
Upon review of some video
surveillance and evidence left at
the scene, it was determined the
semi was travelling on 44th
Avenue in Stettler when the
grader struck an overhead line
causing significant damage to the
power line and pole.
Stettler RCMP is seeking the
The opinions expressed are not necessarily
the opinions of this newspaper.
colour coded
by B.P. Schimke
The water cooler discussion a week
ago Monday was predictable, the Las
Vegas massacre of concert goers and a
vehicle assault on a police officer and
Jasper Avenue pedestrians in
Edmonton.
“
Terrorism is simply
getting wrapped up in an
uncompromising ideology
that leads to the justification
for violence.
As would be expected, there was
much grief expressed for those gunned
down like animals in Vegas, and fear
about what happened in Edmonton.
But the comment that continues to
haunt me was when the kindest person
on staff said, “the one good thing, at
least the Vegas shooting wasn’t a terrorist
attack”.
Now the only possible rationale for
such a comment would be an inner
belief that the shooter in Vegas was not
a terrorist because he was white with a
traditional American name. Whereas
the perpetrator in Edmonton was a terrorist
because he was brown with an
Arab-sounding name.
Even though the white guy had an
arsenal of modified assault weapons to
maximize carnage in Vegas, why
would anyone consider him less of a
terrorist than the individual in
Edmonton with an ISIS flag?
This year in Canada there have been
more innocent Muslims gunned down
by a white extremist than the other
way around.
On January 29, Alexandre
Bissonnette opened fire in a Quebec
City mosque as prayers were ending,
killing six and injuring 19.
Iman Hassan Guillet during the
funeral for the six said, “Alexandre
Bissonnette, before being a killer, was
a victim himself”. “Before he planted
bullets in the heads of his victims,
somebody planted ideas more dangerous
than bullets in this head”, said
Guillet.
Terrorism is any act against citizens
by an individual or group that subscribes
to an uncompromising
ideology that can justify and rationalize
violence on innocents.
Writer, Jason Burke, in “The Myth
of the Lone Wolf”, reminds us that
during the 1960’s and 70’s many home
grown groups and lone wolves, on the
right and left, were terrorizing Europe
and America.
Climate change, a
natural phenomena
by Herman Schwenk
I read with interest the letter from
Gilles Danis in the Sept. 28/17 issue of
the ECA Review, titled ‘Global
warming is not theory’.
I am not a scientist or a climatologist
but I have studied the issue of global
warming quite extensively for the past
20 years.
In reading his letter, I would suggest
that he is comparing apples and
plums.
Meteorological and geological scientists
have done extensive research on
the climate change that has occurred
since the beginning of time.
Democracy received a slap
Dear Editor
Regarding the upcoming election in
the Town and County of Stettler, I
would very much like to encourage eligible
voters to examine the issues
carefully and vote carefully for their
choice of candidate who they wish to
represent them at the municipal level
for the next four years.
Government affects all of us at the
national, provincial and municipal
levels and it is at the municipal level
where our votes are most important.
The County of Stettler voters have
some very important decisions to
make and as Canadians, need to
realize how important their individual
votes are in this particular upcoming
election.
County residents voted ‘NO’ in a vote
of the electorate held Mon. June 27,
regarding the wasteful expense and
cost of the new county public works
building.
Exactly 1047 eligible voters weighed
in on the issue at voting
stations throughout the County,
with 54 per cent of voters saying no to a
new shop facility and 46 per cent of the
voters saying yes.
The County Shop building is historically
the largest capital project ever
undertaken by the County of Stettler.
Never before had a plebiscite vote
been necessary in the County of
Stettler regarding such an important
issue involving such a large expenditure
of money.
Within days of the plebiscite being
defeated, the sitting County
of Stettler councillors voted
to proceed with the building
project using money that
was meant for necessary
new roads to pay for the cost
of the building project.
Stettler County council
bulldozed the majority vote
and majority will of the
public and spent a very
large amount of money on a
building that was much
more than was needed.
SHAME on the councillors
for defying the will of
the people in a legal vote.
The government did not
listen to the people. NOW is
the time to make them
listen.
Only Ernest Gendre was
strong enough to stand up
and vote against the
spending frenzy of Stettler
County councillors.
Please, as a Canadian, I
am asking the County of
Stettler municipal voters to
take this opportunity and
vote the incumbent councillors
out of office. Democracy
has received a slap in the
stand up for Canada and for
democracy.
Failure to get response from Kneehill residents
Dear Editor,
First of all, I would like to
extend my sincere thanks to all
the nominees for Kneehill
County Council. Thank you as
well for the dedicated service of
each council member who
decided to step down at this
time.
On June 28, Kneehill County
held a public hearing for their
Municipal Development Plan
(MDP). This is the most important
planning document in the
County.
Two information sessions for
comments on the draft MDP
were held and I’m told a grand
total of zero persons attended.
A third session combined
with the annual update on the
County netted a few more
attendees and the public
hearing itself a handful of
comments.
Meanwhile, a questionnaire
was sent out with a County
newsletter to get input on the
draft.
This questionnaire was
responded to by a grand total of
22 out of 5,000 residents … that’s
correct TWENTY-TWO. Each
councillor could have sat down
for coffee with three residents
and obtained better results.
Surprisingly, Kneehill
administration spent a considerable
amount of time turning
these 22 surveys into statistics
with percentages.
Really, people, is that how
much we care about our
county?
What should we really take
away from those surveys?
Obviously not much!
The first question should be
“How can we get a better
response from our residents?”
The next question should be
C02, not a factor in climate warming
Cont’d from Pg 4
That first ice age lasted
about 400,000 years. At that
time there was no oxygen in
the atmosphere, it was
somewhere between 70 and
90 per cent C02.
So C02 was not a factor in
warming up the climate at
that time.
They have figured out
that in every case when the
climate warmed up, C02
emissions did not increase
until after the climate had
warmed up.
Climate change is caused
by solar activity and cycles.
During the medieval
warm period over a 1000
years ago, global temperatures
were much warmer
than they are now.
During that period, the
Vikings were farming and
growing grain on
Greenland.
No one knows, but it is
possible that the Arctic
Ocean may have been open
to the North Pole at that
time.
Today Greenland is solid
permafrost. The warm
period we are experiencing
today began about the year
1750, before the industrial
revelation, when man first
started emitting C02 into
the atmosphere from the
burning of coal.
In the last 100 years, the
global mean temperature
has only increased by about
one degree which is hardly
catastrophic!
An excellent book I came
across a few years ago was
written by Bruno Wiskel. It
describes, in detail, the
work and research of the
real scientists that determined
the timing of the
various ice ages that
occurred.
The title of the book is
“The Sky is Not Falling”,
Putting Climate Change on
Trial.
I would recommend to
anyone interested in the
real science of climate
change, try to obtain a copy
at a public library.
C02 is not destroying our
living conditions, in fact, it
is improving the conditions
for growing plants.
There has already been
an increase in yields of
about 15 per cent by just
increasing concentrations of
CO2 from 280 parts-per-million
(ppm) to 400 ppm.
Scientists have determined
that the ideal
concentration for plant growth would
be about 1200 ppm.
My advise to everyone is to pay no
attention to the climate alarmists.
Climate change is and has always been
natural.
The sooner the media, politicians,
environmentalists etc., admit that climate
change is natural, the better off
the world will be.
“Was the survey itself difficult
to respond to?”
Finally “How can we
endorse a plan for the
County when we have not
succeeded in getting input
from residents?”
A couple of questions for
each of the candidates for
council and especially for
the incumbents, “Will the
residents of your division
guide your decision
making?” If so “Recognizing
the current method of
obtaining public input is not
working, what is your plan
to engage your residents?”
Most importantly please
Mindful of our intensity of hate
Cont’d from Pg 4
I remember Timothy McVeigh killing
168 innocent children and adults when
he bombed a government building in
Oklahoma City in 1995 and, in the same
era, religious zealots bombing abortion
clinics, killing adults to save babies.
And there are many more terrorist
examples prior to and post 9/11 perpetrated
by whites on the left and right.
Ironically, the Islamic extremists,
who are fighting the infidels—democratic
governments led by the United
States—have much in common with
white national extremists in the United
States who are also fighting their democratically
elected federal government.
Whether it’s 20 dead six-year old students
and six teachers in Sandy Hook or
59 dead music fans in Vegas, mass
shootings are
wrapped up in
American liberty
and fear of their
federal
government.
In Canada we
need to stop
Americanizing
ourselves with a
steady diet of
CNN, Fox News
and The Rebel.
We are better
educated, more
travelled and
have a far superior
governance
and judicial
system than our
neighbours to the
south. (P.S. don’t
tell them, they
think they’re the
greatest!)
Terrorism is
simply getting
wrapped up in an
uncompromising ideology
that leads to the justification
for violence.
Most important, we must
always be mindful of our
hate and the intensity of that
hate because each one of us
can be radicalized.
Terrorism is not colour
coded.
Corrections
Morrin report
Dennis Schoonderbeek of Morrin, Ab.
notified the ECA Review that his name was
spelled incorrectly in the story ‘Citizen
denied public documents again’, Sept. 28
issue.
The ECA Review referred to the spelling
of his name on the Morrin council meeting
agenda, which unfortunately was incorrect.
Schoonderbeek also stated in his email to
the ECA Review that it looked like we were
only telling one side of the story, as we
failed to report his comments made to Mr.
Seimens.
The ECA Review wishes to inform the
public that with the use of recording
devices, shorthand
has not been
offered for many
many years.
With Morrin
Council not permitting
the use of
recording devices,
(used for accurate
reporting), the
reporter was not
able to record the
entire conversation
in
handwriting.
We sincerely
hope that the new
council will
permit recording
of their meetings
for indepth
reporting.
Learning to listen better should be a job requirement for councillors
Rob Somerville,
County of Stettler candidate
Byemoor/Endiang
If I have learned anything by running
for Stettler County Council
during this election period it is this...
I came into this election thinking
that the number one problem in the
County of Stettler was finances.
True enough, the councillors are
spending money like drunken sailors
but finances are not the number one
problem...although the finances are in
really serious shape.
It is not roads, although I have
driven on some terrible roads while
going door to door campaigning. Some
roads are better, some are worse. Some
are a disgrace but roads are not the
number one problem.
Of course, the new shop is an issue
but the anger directed towards the
shop is, in my view, more of a
symptom. The shop is not the number
one issue.
There are a host of other issues that
people have expressed to me while
going door to door. Those issues are
also not the number one issue,
although they are important issues
that hopefully will get addressed.
The number one issue in the County
of Stettler is.... (drum roll please):
Council does not know how to listen.
This is not just an election issue. It is
an all-the-time number one issue.
You could argue that they simply do
not listen because they are too busy
talking and telling us why we are
wrong about what ever issue we are
trying to communicate to them.
“
Council, for sure the
presently sitting council,
does not know how to
listen.
Or that they do not want to hear
what we have to say because it might
not agree with what they want to do.
All that could be very true but I see
a County council that does not know
how to listen.
Listening is a skill. Most of us are
actually quite bad at it and I would
include myself in that group. I would
say I do recognize the problem; I am
trying to improve.
Council, for sure the presently sitting
council, does not know how to
listen. If listening is a skill, then it can
be taught. Council needs to learn how
to listen.
Old dogs can learn new tricks. Or
get rid of the old dogs and elect some
new dogs who are trying to listen and
willing to learn how to listen better.
I would suggest that councils
inability (not just an unwillingness
but an inability) to listen was and is
the underlying cause of the majority of
the ratepayer problems with the new
County Shop.
Council did not know how to listen.
As a result Council was unable to
understand how to effectively communicate
the need for the new shop to the
ratepayers.
Council really did not understand
their ratepayers because they had
never listened to them.
Typically what we see when interacting
with council members is this...
we, the ratepayer, might get a chance
to express our viewpoint on whatever
is the issue of the day, but then the
council member will tell us why we
are wrong.
That is simply not listening. That is
not communication because communication
is mostly listening.
It seems council members love to
“
talk. Talk, talk, talk.
So much more could be achieved by
listening, listening, listening.
Sure there is a need to provide information
and council needs to provide it
but then stop...listen.
Listen for longer than just to catch
your breath.
Listen without only thinking of how
you will respond, but instead how you
will understand.
How can a councillor represent the
ratepayers in their Division if the
councillor is so preoccupied with
telling the County side of an issue (or
during the election period, how wonderful
they are) that there is no time to
listen?
I read somewhere that if you are in a
conversation with someone and you
find you are talking for more than one
minute without pausing to let the
other person speak then you are not
listening.
It is something to do with how the
human brain works. I need to improve
my listening skills too but at least I
recognize the problem.
Generally humans are not great
listeners.
I do think councillors need to learn
to listen better. It should be a job
requirement.
was, I think, an example of how a new
or she was representing.
Anyway, now it’s your turn to not
only talk but be heard. I will be going
around door to door from now to election
day practicing my listening skills.
Service awards highlights Big Valley council meeting
Linda Stillinger
ECA Review Reporter
Big Valley Councillor (and
former Mayor) Lois Miller
was presented with a five
year service pin at the Sept.
28 regular council meeting.
During her term in office,
Miller has been a strong
voice for Big Valley, promoting
the community’s
interests on both the local
and regional levels.
Councillor Miller did not
run for office during this
year’s municipal election.
Chief Administrative
Officer (CAO) Michelle
White and Public Works
Foreman Mel Dods both
received five year services
pins at the meeting.
White has been Big
Valley’s CAO since
September 2012 and has
recently taken the CAO position
with the Village of Alix,
planning to divide her time
between the two municipalities.
Dods has been Big
Valley’s public works
foreman since August of
2012.
Multi-year capital budget
A review of Big Valley’s
multi-year capital budget
included sidewalks in 2018,
paving projects in 2019, possible
water and sewer
extensions in 2020 and new
equipment investments in
2022. Administration will
amend this budget and
bring it back to the new
council at the November
meeting.
Operating budget
A review of the first draft
of the 2018 Village Operating
Budget revealed no significant
changes to MSI
Operating Funds for 2018.
Administration is recommending
a $3 increase to the
monthly water flat fee rate,
representing a $7,200
increase in annual revenue.
Water was budgeted at a
$29,530 deficit in 2017 and
the proposed changes to the
2018 budget will bring that
down.
The shortfall of service
charges for Big Valley’s
water needs come out of tax
revenues.
The draft budget also
includes storm sewer work,
flushing and cleaning of
lines, curb stop changes and
a two per cent increase in
the senior requisition.
The draft does not show
an increase in the tax mill
rate.
The operating budget will
be brought back to the
November meeting for
review by the new council.
Lease extension
The Bust Out Rodeo
Association was granted an
addition to their lease area
north of the Village.
As a condition, the access
road to the village dry dump
will be left intact in its
entirety, and will be asked to
install a proper gate across
the road limiting the access
to village staff or those
authorized by the village for
dumping.
DICK SMEAL
Council voted to award this
year’s Big Valley Community
Patricia Saunders and entire family immigrated from England in 1974
Patricia Saunders passed
away peacefully at the
Misericordia Hospital in
Edmonton, Ab. on Sept. 2,
1917 at the age of 85. Patricia
was born on July 7, 1932 to
Harold and Winnifred Wilce
of Coleford, Gloucestershire,
England. She had an older
brother, Gordon and a
younger sister, Jean.
Patricia was a determined
little girl, through her consistent
crying at age three,
when her brother got to
attend school, Patricia was
allowed to follow in
his footsteps. This
love of learning took
Pat to Newent
Grammer School at
age 16 where she
passed the Oxford
Certificate, a percursor
to university.
During Pat’s childhood,
the dark days
of WWII fell on the
country. Air raid
sirens, carrying gas masks,
food rationing and blackouts
at night became routine.
When spiders cast their
shadows in the candlelight,
a fear was born in Pat. This
fear stayed with her and in
turn, was passed on to her
daughters.
Visits from Winnifred’s
Canadian cousins, the
Smith brothers, when on
leave from active duty,
brightened Pat’s days. She
marvelled at these tall men
who had to duck their heads
to come through the
doorway.
Attending church was a
large part of Pat’s youth.
After being christened, she
participated in Sunday
school, choir, confirmation
and two services on
Sundays.
Pat flourished throughout
her younger days, but the
love and respect she had for
her parents denied her a
university education.
Instead, she took shorthand
classes at night and worked
in the railroad offices in
Gloucester.
Patricia met Ronald
Saunders in 1954 and they
married in 1955. This union
Saunders
lasted 60 years. Ron and Pat
moved onto Nursehill Farm,
Lydney, Gloucestershire
where Ron ran a dairy farm
with his brother.
Four children were born
to Ron and Pat. Christopher
(April 1956), Caroline
(October 1957-November
1958), Heather (June 1960)
and Kerry (August 1963).
Pat’s days were filled with
sewing, knitting, tending to
flower beds and a vegetable
garden and cooking, all
skills she gained from her
parents.
Pat had a love
for nature, which
was evident in
the walks down
the lanes where
she took her children
to pick and
identify wildflowers,
spot
birds and wildlife
and gather
nuts and
mushrooms.
With Ron’s relationship
changing with his brother,
he sold his share in the
farm. A new plan was
taking shape through a visit
from Pat’s cousin, Myrtle
Richardson from Alberta,
Canada. “Come to Canada”,
she said.
While this plan was
taking shape, a move was
made next door to Pat’s
sister in Nine Wells,
Coleford.
In April 1974, the entire
family immigrated to
Alliance, Ab. Canada where
Myrtle had a spare home
and Ron could travel back
and forth to Brownfield, Ab.
where he farmed.
While in Alliance, Pat was
employed by the newspaper,
The Alliance Enterprise,
where typesetting now filled
her days.
In 1975, after a home was
moved onto the land, Ron
and Pat moved their family
to the Brownfield area.
Patricia became employed
by Orval and Nelda
Hawthorne, owners of
Brownfield Distributors.
Pat enjoyed serving the
Brownfield community and
When a snow storm hit our community 17102AA3 last week, it wreaked havoc for everything
and everyone in its path, including our electricity infrastructure. High winds
and heavy snow resulted in broken powerlines and impassible roads, delaying
restoration to over 5000 ATCO customers who were left without power.
Crews from all over the province responded, resulting in over 120 people working
day and night. They restored electricity service where they could; pulled vehicles
out of ditches; and slept in their vehicles until roads were cleared and they could
continue to work on restoring power for you, our valued customers.
We are prepared for any situation to ensure your power is restored as quickly
and as safely as possible. Sometimes Mother Nature makes it tough, but our
dedicated linemen and the folks backing them up don’t stop until every last site
has power again.
So thank you for your patience and understanding. Your kind words to our
employees, whether through social media or in-person, mean a lot and remind
us of why we do what we do.
Kenneth Melroy
& Detailing Service
www.Stettlergm.com
He loved nothing more
403-742-3407
Blocksom was born in
Hanna, Ab. to Alva and
Irma Blocksom.
He spent his early years in
Mirror and Calgary and
completed high school in
Hanna.
Ken grew up in a very
musical family and learned
to play the saxophone. As a
young man, he joined an
orchestra, the Blue Notes,
and played at local dances in
southern Alberta.
When Ken was
20, he bought
and restored an
old army Harley
Davidson motorcycle.
He was a
dashing and
handsome fellow
on his motorcycle
and caught
the eye of the
love of his life, Blocksom
Peggy
Cattanach.
Ken and Peggy married
on May 13, 1951 and settled
in Hanna, Ab. They raised
three beautiful children,
Terry, Pat and Gay.
Ken’s passion for cars led
him to his life long career
working at Jimmie’s Auto
Service in Hanna, a GM
dealership, where he was in
charge of sales.
This job was well suited to
Ken’s personality as he
loved people and conversation.
He was kind and
generous and
would often invite
clients to share a
meal at his home.
Ken was a natural
leader, and
participated in
many volunteer
activities
including town
council, Kinsmen
and leading Boy
Scouts. He won a
bravery medal for
a heroic rescue of
a young boy
during a scouting
session.
Ken’s joys in life
included spending
summers in
Windermere, B.C.
with his family
and dear friends
where they fished
and water skied.
Ken also loved
working with
wood. Some of his
many projects
included building
furniture, a ski
boat, cabinets for
his kitchen and
birdhouses.
Ken was a history
buff,
particularly for
events related to
the first and
second World
Wars. He loved
airplanes and both
he and Peg
obtained their
than to load his family into
his Cessna and fly out to
visit his good friend, Bud at
his farm in Youngstown.
After the kids left home,
Ken and Peggy bought 80
acres of land in the
Bearberry, west of Sundre,
Ab. This was their weekend
oasis for many years until
1986 when they retired from
the car business and moved
permanently to the ‘farm’ in
Bearberry.
For the last 30
years of his life, Ken
enjoyed an amazing
retirement. With
Peg, he travelled
extensively in their
motorhome, finding
great places to fish
and enjoy the
outdoors.
They both loved to
snowmobile with
friends and family
and their home was
a perfect launching pad for
many adventures.
Until the very end of his
life, Ken loved to jump on
his quad and take a tour of
the “pea patch”.
The family will cherish all
the good times that were
enjoyed sharing outdoor
adventures, meals and great
conversation with Ken and
Peg at the farm.
Ken’s greatest legacy is
the love that he bestowed on
his family.
