Staff Report
titled Great Lakes, Great
Women takes a look at the impact
women had on the Great
Lakes Naval Base since its
founding in 1911.
It highlights more than twenty
women who broke legal and
civic barriers in the fight for
inclusion, equality and recognition
within the United States
Navy.
The presenter is Erik Wright
from the National Museum of
the American Sailor. It takes
place at 7 p.m. April 30 at the
Highland Park Library, 494
Preparing for spring rain
Rain and flooding are
difficult to deal with.
They can cause damages
that are hard to cope with
financially.
However, you can potentially
minimize damages
by making sure you
prepare for the workse.
The City has recommendations
and options
that can be pursued to
minimize flooding risks
either in a basement or
yard. The risk of flooding
cannot be completely
prevented, especially
for those living in floodplain
areas, but in certain
circumstances, property
owners can take proactive
steps to mitigate
flooding.
• Inspect flood protection
devices such as back
flow preventers, sump
pumps, and battery backups;
check that valves and
standpipes, are in good
working condition.
• Contact a licensed
plumber to have your
storm and sanitary lateral
service pipes (running
from home to street) inspected
to be free of roots
and debris.
• Contact a licensed
plumber for inspection
and verification that storm
lateral service pipes are
not connected to sanitary
lateral service pipes.
These two lateral pipes
should remain separate
and connected separately
to City storm and sanitary
main pipes.
• Make sure all exterior
drains such as window
well drains, outside yard
drains, gutters, and street
drains are clear of debris,
leaves and any other obstructions.
• Install an overhead
sanitary stem to alleviate
sewer backups.
