GBN grad’s band releases first EP, returns to perform in Chicago
Martin Carlino, Editor
Glenbrook North graduate
Phil Levine and his band Stone
Arch Isles have spent the last
two years writing songs. The
hope of the two-year endeavor
was simplistic in nature, one that
countless bands have worked to
achieve and one that was embedded
with the desire of finding the
perfect compilation of music that
represents its sound.
On March 9, 13 months after
recording commenced, Stone
Arch Isles released “Kingdoms,”
a six-song EP showcasing the
band’s work.
“[Kingdoms] is such a beautiful
cumulation for us of the past
two years of our life,” said Carlos
Kelley, the band’s drummer.
The band consists of six members:
Levine, Kelley, Alex Chapdelaine,
Matt Gleason, Daniel
Chapdelaine and Trevor Stroschein.
After Alex and Daniel Chapdelaine
became friends with
Gleason in high school, the trio
decided to head to the University
of Minnesota, where they met the
Northbrook native Levine. The
addition of Kelley shortly thereafter
added the final piece to the
puzzle and the rest is history.
Now, the band will return to
Chicago for its third live performance,
this time through Sofar
Sounds, a company that specializes
in presenting music in an
intimate and respectful setting.
Stone Arch Isles will play on
April 14 in Logan Square, to a
sold-out crowd.
The band’s performance will
be videotaped live, a characteristic
of the show it highly anticipates.
“We want to bring something
special to that taping as well,”
Kelley said. “The more we can
expose people to all the different
ways we can sound, the more
important it is.”
Per Levine, the band will
even showcase a unique element
for the show. All vocals will be
“straight from their mouths”
paired with a mixture of an
acoustic and “very clean sounding
electric guitar,” according to
Levine.
Although it will be the third
time the band has played Chicago,
the show will still hold
special meaning.
“We’ve been to Chicago twice
and we’ve really enjoyed it with
the band,” Daniel Chapdelaine
said. “It’s always a ton of fun.”
The performance will hold a
little extra sentiment for Levine,
who considers Chicago shows a
homecoming of sorts.
“What I love about playing
Chicago is that it’s an opportunity
to show the people that gave
to me and showed me lessons
that I’m using what they gave me
... that I’m growing and using the
lessons that I’ve learned from
them,” he said. “It’s a way of
getting to say thank you and it’s
really special for that reason.”
Levine mentioned GBN educators
Julie Ann Robinson and
Chad Davidson as two of the
people who taught him great lessons
while at GBN and helped
him refine his craft.
After its Chicago show, time
on the road is something the
band envisions more of.
“We’re going to try and make
touring more of a thing in the future,”
