If we had to describe it in
one word…...
The story goes that it was late in the Christmas season and The
Salvation Army’s William Booth was running out of time to
distribute a holiday greeting that would inspire and refresh his
troops stationed literally around the world.
Time was short. Resources were thin. Telegraph messages were
charged by the letter. But Booth was brilliant. The Founder and
first General of The Salvation Army telegraphed a single word to
officers scattered far and wide:
Others.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP
Captains Ken and Jessie Chapman
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Almost two years ago we moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to
begin our appointment as Area Commanders of the Tulsa
Area Command. It has been a rewarding time of faith,
humility, inspiration and gratefulness in this amazing
community of friendly and generous people.
The Salvation Army has been serving Tulsa since 1906. Over
the past 112 years, tens of thousands of lives have been
touched, transformed, and renewed by the mission of this
glorious Army. The Salvation Army is the largest army in the
world, with 1.5 million soldiers serving in 128 countries. And,
Tulsa is a thriving community for mission!
We are in the process of bringing great improvements to the
Captains Ken and Jessie Chapman
programs of our six Boys & Girls Clubs. Over 18,000 people
are affected by the work of these clubs each year and you will see some remarkable developments taking place in
the coming months. Our Center of Hope is built for 160 beds, yet between 300-325 people are housed each
night of the year, of which, 50 to 60 are children. That Center never closes and basic human needs are met daily.
Our Pathway of Hope social services initiative will break generational cycles of poverty and restore dignity and
hope to many who cannot do it by themselves. When natural disasters strike, you can count on us to be one of
the first on the scene to bring relief and spiritual and emotional care.
We are passionate about bringing hope to the hopeless, a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves, and
direction to those who have lost their way. We are compelled by the love of Christ and want to demonstrate His
love, mercy, and compassion in practical ways.
We thank God for this incredible opportunity to serve in this unique community called TULSA. Exciting things
are happening and the days ahead are full of promise.
We ask you to consider sharing your time, talent, and treasure as you are able to make a positive difference in
this community we now call home. Join me and thousands of others in our Power of 12 campaign as we strive to
not only raise the needed funds for the mission, but clearly communicate with and cultivate new donors to
ensure a vibrant future.
Thank you for supporting us, for standing by us, and for making Tulsa a better place to live. May God richly
bless you.
Yours for “Others,”
Ken & Jessie Chapman, Captains
A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP
J. Pat Baldwin, Advisory Board Chairman
Dear Friends,
I would like to take a moment to thank you for your continued
support of The Salvation Army and its ministry in Tulsa. Since
1906 The Salvation Army has been serving Tulsans in need
and lives have been forever changed because of its ministry to
our beautiful city. Because of your generous support, people
in need have a place to turn for assistance.
I am truly honored to serve as the chairman of The Salvation
Army’s Advisory Board and I am humbled to serve alongside
some amazingly gifted people. The work The Salvation Army
does is very important to me because it’s personal. The Army
helped a family member of mine several years ago when he
was going through a dark time. I saw first-hand how God
used The Salvation Army to reach him during that time and I will always be grateful.
When natural disaster strikes you can count on The Salvation Army to be among the first on the scene to
bring relief and care in any way possible. We saw that commitment come to life this past year as multiple
hurricanes struck our nation and other countries. More than 18,000 people are served by our six Boys & Girls
Clubs each year and we are in the process of making great improvements to the programs that will make their
work even more amazing. Our Center of Hope homeless shelter meets basic human needs and is never closed.
We serve nearly twice the number of people the Center is built for each night, with families and children our
highest growing population. Fifty to sixty of our guests each night are children. Our Pathway of Hope social
services initiative seeks to break the cycle of poverty for many who cannot do it alone. If you have not already
done so, please consider participating in our Power of 12 campaign. These funds will help us in our mission to
be the hands and feet of Christ in the Tulsa community and will help us cultivate new donors so that we can
continue our work far into the future.
If you already support the ministry of The Salvation Army I want to sincerely thank you. If you are looking
for an organization to support, I assure you this ministry has the highest level of accountability to ensure every
dime you give is used to do the most good.
Thank you for supporting us and making Tulsa a better place to live.
God Bless,
Pat Baldwin
A Brief Look at Our History
T
he Salvation Army was founded by William Booth of England in 1865, the premise being one of
providing outreach and hope to those who were seeking physical, emotional, and spiritual
guidance and assistance. The Salvation Army expanded to America in 1880, and has been
operating in the Tulsa area since 1906.
For the past century, the Tulsa Metro Area Command of The Salvation Army has been dedicated to
the service of its community’s needs, whatever those needs may be, and without discrimination. The Salvation
Army has worked tirelessly through wartimes, economic struggles, environmental disasters and everyday
challenges facing the needy, to bring dignity back into the lives of those who have needed a helping hand.
Over the past 112 years, as the Tulsa area population grew, so did the services offered by The
Salvation Army:
• 1906, The Salvation Army is established in Tulsa
• 1910, Sapulpa Corps is established (relocated in 1997)
• 1926, Sand Springs Corps was established
• 1940, Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) was
established
• 1944, Red Shield Club was established
• 1958, current ARC was opened
• 1959, current Mabee Red Shield Club was opened
• 1973, North Mabee Boys & Girls Club was opened
Captain Brinton Fleet Breeding
• 1978, Charles Page Sand Springs Corps Community Center and Boys & Girls Club building was opened
• 1979, John E. Mabee Broken Arrow Community Center and Boys & Girls Club was opened
• 1984, social services building, Area Command and Shelter was opened (current Center of Hope)
• 1992, Jim and Rosemary Close Gym at West Mabee was opened
• 1995, Area Command administrative building was purchased near downtown Tulsa
• 1997, Sapulpa (Creek County) Boys & Girls Club building was opened
• 2001, new addition to the Social Services Center Complex was opened and facility renamed “Center of
Hope”
• 2012, current Tulsa Area Command, was purchased, remodeled and occupied.
Today, The Salvation Army is known in the
community as “always there when you need us.” This has
proven true in almost every area of human service, as The
Salvation Army has grown through the years to become a
strength in the community. The Salvation Army in Tulsa
has become not only a place of emergency services and
support, but also an agency capable of providing the
appropriate resources needed to change negative patterns
and assist individuals and families, at any age, with their
problems.
MEETING THE NEED
HOMELESSNESS
T
he Center of Hope, 102 N. Denver, is a place for Tulsans to go when they have no other
place to go. It is the largest overnight shelter in Eastern Oklahoma offering emergency shelter and
public meals 365 days a year. On an
average night, 285-325 guests sleep in the
shelter and between 900-1,000 meals are served. The
facility is also home to a range of social services aimed
at helping people identify and overcome the causes of
their homelessness while offering support that allows
them to improve their lives.
The fastest growing population at the Center
of Hope is families. These families have often lost
everything and are struggling to keep their children
fed and housed safely. Our facility offers family
rooms for overnight guests as well as 17 supportive housing apartments for those who are motivated to work
their way back to permanent housing and want to use our facility as a launch pad to get back on their feet.
Individuals and families can work with professional case managers to formulate a plan for becoming
self-sufficient and are given tools and resources to help them succeed. In addition to the family housing, the
Center of Hope provides long term shelter (up to two years) for singles who are committed to becoming
independent. The Center also serves as a community resource by offering utility assistance, public meals and
serving as a heating and cooling station when extreme temperatures hit.
MEETING THE NEED
WORSHIP
T
he Tulsa Metro Area Command of The Salvation Army is committed to serving the spiritual needs
of our neighbors. After all, SALVATION is our middle name! The heart of The Salvation Army is
found in its spiritual ministry. From here, we reach out to heal
wounds of the soul, to share the love of Jesus Christ and to
proclaim God's promise of salvation. Everything The Salvation Army does is to
show God's love to others. The Salvation Army is considered a Protestant
denomination of the Christian Church with beliefs that are in line with
mainstream Christian teaching. Salvation Army officers are ordained ministers
who can perform marriages and dedicate children and who provide ministerial
duties for their congregations.
Salvation Army Churches, known as Corps, are made up of
congregations of soldiers (church members) and adherents. Each congregation
is unique, while maintaining the basic facets of Salvation Army service. In all
cases, these congregations are welcoming, loving places and would love to have
you visit them anytime.
In Tulsa, we have three Corps/worship centers that serve as the heart of our spiritual mission. Each
center is a church, providing worship on Sundays. These centers also provide various educational, recreational,
social services and pastoring programs. Our Center of Hope also holds daily worship services in its chapel that
are open to the public.
MEETING THE NEED
YOUTH
BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS
T
he Salvation Army serves youth of all ages through a variety of programs. Be it physical needs or spiritual
ones, The Army offers programs where children and teenagers can find support and a home away from
home.
The cornerstone of the youth programs is The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Tulsa.
With six locations throughout the greater Tulsa area, the Boys
& Girls Clubs offer after-school programs during the academic
school year. Ensuring that we are preparing the leaders of
tomorrow, programs such as Keystone Club and Youth of the
Year competition are offered. During the summer, the Clubs
have day camps, where children can have a safe place to be while out of school. Arts and crafts, computer and
recreational activities, and athletic programs are just a few of the many activities youth enjoy year-round.
Each Club offers organized and affordable sports such as basketball and football while placing an equal
emphasis on academics and character building. In 2018, The Salvation Army will open a Conservatory for
Performing and Visual Arts in all six clubs, providing affordable music and arts education no longer offered in
many public schools.
The programs and services offered at The Salvation Army Boys & Girls
Clubs go beyond serving just members. The Clubs also serve as community centers
in their neighborhoods. The facilities host birthday parties, senior swimming classes,
offer adult gym memberships and serve as emergency shelters when needed.
MEETING THE NEED
CHRISTMAS ASSISTANCE
T
he "miracle" of Christmas is repeated over and over again through the joy of caring and sharing. The
traditional red kettle is an integral part of the Christmas scene, with hundreds of thousands of dollars
donated each year to aid needy families, seniors, and the homeless. Without The Salvation Army and its
efforts through the Angel Tree and other programs, many children would be without toys and clothes at
Christmas. The Salvation Army assists needy families to ensure that their hardship is not suffered by their children.
Donations and financial assistance provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need,
including families of prisoners.
Volunteers distribute gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes, and our homeless shelter offers a sitdown
Christmas Eve luncheon. The Salvation Army endeavors to bring spiritual light and love to those it serves at
Christmas so that the real meaning of the season is not forgotten.
MEETING THE NEED
DISASTER RELIEF
H
urricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, wild fires, mass shootings. From Texas to Las Vegas
to Puerto Rico to Mexico to California, beyond and in between, The Salvation Army responded
to more natural and man-created disasters in 2017 than any other year in our history, bringing
food, drink, emotional and spiritual care and social services. Long after the news media lights
have dimmed and others have gone, The Salvation Army remains, providing long-term recovery services to the
survivors.
The Salvation Army is here every day of the year to help those going through personal crises: addiction,
homelessness, or financial struggle. Disaster can also hit without warning, and affect an entire community.
During this time of need, the Army is ready to provide long and short-term relief through Emergency Disaster
Services.
In the United States, the first major disaster the Army provided relief efforts for was the Galveston
Hurricane in September, 1900. Since then, the Tulsa Metro Area Command of The Salvation Army has
responded to countless emergency situations throughout our 112-year history in the Tulsa metro area. The
Tulsa Metro Area Command of The Salvation Army has staff and volunteers trained and ready to respond
when needed. While every disaster is unique and creates its own special needs, the core of The Salvation Army’s
disaster program consists of several basic services such as food service and emotional and spiritual care.
back on track in preparation for graduating the program and achieving self-sufficiency.
The ARC in Tulsa is a unique religious and work therapy program for men with a wide variety of spiritual and
group and more can help The Salvation Army.
In April, Little Caesars Love Kitchen made a
stop at the Center of Hope homeless shelter and
provided fresh hot pizza to all of the guests that
day.
US Cellular employees provide hundreds of
volunteer hours at our Boys & Girls Clubs each
year. Along with working with the youth, they
also provide much needed repairs, cleaning and
painting!
The University of Tulsa Athletic
Department partners with the Boys & Girls
Clubs by providing tickets to games, campus
tours and organizing sporting activities. These
events give at-risk youth the opportunity to get
on a college campus and set the sights for their
future high.
YOUR TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
The Christmas season offers many ways for people, businesses, civic
groups, churches, schools and more to get involved in making a
difference in our community. Reasor’s Foods is a long-standing partner
in our Red Kettle program. Here, Jeff Reasor shares his Red Kettle
Reason.
Matching Kettle Sponsors like Tulsa Gold & Silver, Bank of
Oklahoma, and Lawn America help The Salvation Army continue its
programs year-round. Tulsa Gold & Silver also partners with The
Salvation Army by buying back any gold coins dropped in kettles!
AAON helped us get the word out about DipJars — a way to
support The Salvation Army at the Red Kettles when you don’t carry
cash — by matching donations in DipJars. Have YOU dipped today?
When it looked like the Center of Hope was going to
be short on turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas,
these employees of John Zink Hamworthy
Combustion, also members of The Salvation Army
Women’s Auxiliary, jumped into action and organized a
turkey drive.
Through their efforts, the community came
through! Employees from NORDAM also donated
over 350 turkeys and hams!
Blue Cross Blue Shield was one of 39 companies
who participated in our Day of Ringing program this
year. ORU took all kettles for an entire day!
For the second year, Captain Ken Chapman, and several hardy volunteers walked 66 miles on historic Route
66 in the Route 66 Walk for the Homeless presented by Route 66 Chevrolet. Joining him on the entire walk
were, left to right, Luke Swain, Captain Chapman, Isaiah Stegall, Mike Havise and Tom Tommey. The
first night of the walk, others from the community joined the walkers in a campout on The Salvation Army Area
Command ground to bring awareness of those homeless who sleep outside every night. Among those braving the
cold were Libby Billings of Eloté Café & Catering, Kim MacLeod of the City of Tulsa and Noe Rodriguez
from the Mental Health Association Oklahoma. Ken Busby of the Route 66 Alliance served as honorary
chair of the event.
A Summit on Homelessness was held the second morning of the walk and brought community leaders
together to discuss the growing need for emergency shelter in Tulsa. Quarterly Summits are planned for 2018.
For the second year, The Salvation Army partnered with Oklahoma Air National Guard to host Flight
from the North Pole. Presented by Blue Sky Bank, Santa was “flown in” on a fighter jet for a party for
approximately 80 children from the Angel Tree program. There were many activities for the children who each
received a new bicycle and their parents received the Angel Tree toys for the children to open at their homes on
Christmas.
The 2nd Annual Community CarolSing was
held at the Tulsa Community College Performing
MEETING THE NEED
WOMEN’S AUXILIARY
A
cross the nation, The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary members are community leaders who
give of their time, talent and treasure to help The Salvation Army in “Doing the Most Good.”
Their mission is to be “The Army Behind The Army” helping The Salvation Army meet the
need of others at their point of need. Last year the Women’s Auxiliary helped touch the lives of
thousands in the Tulsa metro area through its volunteer participation in
the Angel Tree Program, Red Kettle Campaign, Toy Shop and
fundraising through it’s annual Christmas Fashion Show and Luncheon
now in its 65th year! Through their fundraising initiatives the Auxiliary
provides funds for The Center of Hope homeless shelter, providing free
ACT testing at the six Boys & Girls Clubs, camperships at the Boys &
Girls Clubs and audio-visual equipment for the Tulsa Area Command.
They also provided funds for under privileged children in the metro area
to attend summer camp at Camp Heart O’ Hills.
The Women’s Auxiliary provides an opportunity for women to
meet in a spiritual atmosphere, enjoy programs and relationships, and contribute skills and resources to better
MEETING THE NEED
NEW INITIATIVES
T
he Power of 12 is a unique concept that answers the age-old question that most donors have:
What difference can my donation make?
By harnessing the power of the community, the
power of 12,000 people coming together to do
good with relatively small donations, much can be achieved.
The Salvation Army Tulsa Area Command is on a quest to
get 12,000 people in our community to pledge $12 a month
for 12 months.
By giving up perhaps two gourmet coffees a month
or a movie ticket, even those with modest disposable
income can make a big difference in the lives of those less
fortunate in our community by being part of a larger power
— the Power of 12!
We are inviting people and businesses to challenge
each other with whatever “12” challenge they can imagine
and watch the power and good grow! Post your challenge on social media using the hashtag
#Powerof12Tulsa.
Join us today at www.Powerof12Tulsa.org. Each month we will send you a brief text letting you
know how your donation was spent.
www.Powerof12Tulsa.org
T
he Salvation Army’s iconic red kettles are the official start of the Christmas season for many of us
and have been for more than a century. The kettles signify a season of giving and thinking of those
less fortunate than ourselves. Beginning in
November, we see the bell ringers braving
Oklahoma elements, whatever they may be, to bring good
cheer and help to our neighbors.
This year, The Salvation Army invited companies,
families, church groups, Sunday school classes, civic groups
and more to be a part of
this tradition in a Day of
RINGING!
Oral Roberts
University (ORU) led
the way by taking all
kettle locations in the Tulsa metro area for one full day! In
total, we had 599 Day of Ringing volunteers who raised
$71,639.50; 39 companies, 44 Scouting and civic groups
and 40 individuals.
Each time volunteers staff a kettle, it makes the
Captain Ken Chapman, left, and ORU President Billy
Wilson on ORU’s Day of Ringing.
difference between an empty kettle and one that raises about $30 per hour – enough to shelter a family for a
night, provide a hot meal to ten homeless people or provide homework tutoring to an at-risk youth.
Will YOU join us this year? The Salvation Army will provide the kettle, stand, signage with YOUR
COMPANY/GROUP name and logo, red Salvation Army aprons, bells, AND we offer an easy-to-use, online
system to schedule your group! Call us at 918-587-7801 for more information!
