However, there are several driving forces that are accelerating automation technology adoption across the oilfield currently. The two main drivers in the current climate are safety and costs. The industry has always been focused on safety. But over the past five years, the focus on safety in operations has risen dramatically. Macondo forced the entire industry to undergo a healthy review of its practices, and safety is becoming a more important factor in procurement decisions. A key value proposition of automation technology is improved safety. Production costs are more critical today than at any time in the past five years. Automation is one way to get those costs down, particularly automation beyond the wellhead. During this downturn, many operators will toss the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra aside, and instead review their entire operation looking for ways to improve efficiency. This is automation technology’s time to shine. Automation adopted during the downturn will pave the way for continued technological spread in the inevitable rebound, and operators/contractors that pursue automation options during the downturn will emerge stronger when the recovery does come. Although it always seems darkest before the dawn, and timing is difficult to predict, a recovery will come. And when it does, look for automation to play a key role in differentiating the efficient operations from the less efficient ones. 58 January to February 2018
