Contestants may not consult with team members<br />
except on bonus questions. Contestants<br />
will not be allowed to consult with the audience<br />
during the competition.<br />
7. For each division, 10 questions will be<br />
asked per round.<br />
8. Teams will receive 1 point for each correct<br />
answer and deduct 1 point for each incorrect<br />
answer.<br />
9. A contest judge will be appointed to interpret<br />
questions requiring an opinion on accuracy.<br />
10. Finals for the quiz bowl will immediately<br />
follow the regular competition. Awards will be<br />
presented at the banquet. Please be present to<br />
receive your award.<br />
11. The junior division competes first, senior<br />
division follows.<br />
Judging Contest<br />
Entry done at show check-in.<br />
1. Contestants must register with show officials<br />
at one of the check-in times.<br />
2. There will be a junior and senior division.<br />
3. Awards will be presented at the banquet<br />
to 1st through 3rd place in each division.<br />
Please be present to receive your award.<br />
4. Contest will include classes of <strong>Suffolk</strong><br />
sheep (yearling and lambs) and questions.<br />
5. In the event of a tie, ties will be broken<br />
based on the question score.<br />
Public Speaking Contest<br />
Pre-enter prior to June 10 or at Show<br />
An award or cash premium will be presented<br />
at the banquet. Please be present to receive<br />
it.<br />
1. Contestants must register with contest<br />
officials at one of the check-in times.<br />
2. There will be two divisions:<br />
a. Division 1: Traditional Public Speaking<br />
i. Speeches should relate to <strong>Suffolk</strong>s.<br />
Possible topics might include: members' experiences<br />
with <strong>Suffolk</strong>s, strengths of lean lamb<br />
produced by <strong>Suffolk</strong>s, marketing strategies,<br />
management, breed promotion or education,<br />
the role <strong>Suffolk</strong>s play in the total U.S. sheep<br />
industry, health issues, etc.<br />
ii. Contestants are allowed to use<br />
props or visual aids in presenting speeches.<br />
iii. A copy of your speech, typed and<br />
double spaced, should be handed to the judge<br />
or judges.<br />
iv. Junior speeches may be 1-2 minutes<br />
long, but not more than four (4) minutes.<br />
Senior speeches must be at least four (4) minutes,<br />
but not more than six (6) minutes. Three<br />
points will be deducted for each minute over or<br />
under the time limit. Juniors are encouraged to<br />
create short, fun speeches.<br />
b. Division 2: Impromptu Speaking<br />
i. Topics will be related to the sheep<br />
industry specifically the <strong>Suffolk</strong> industry<br />
ii. The different age divisions will be<br />
given a certain amount of time to prepare the<br />
speech.<br />
• Junior- 20 minutes to prepare<br />
• Senior- 10 minutes to prepare<br />
iii. The different age divisions will also<br />
be given a certain amount of time, in which<br />
they must meet, in order to successfully advertise<br />
their topic.<br />
• Junior-30 seconds<br />
• Senior- 2 minutes<br />
3. General Rules for all divisions:<br />
a. A new group was added, “Family.” This<br />
can be siblings, parent & child or any grouping<br />
of the family, up to 3 members, that work<br />
together to create this public speech. Be creative!!!<br />
b. Contestants may refer to notes on index<br />
cards while presenting their speech. However,<br />
contestants are encouraged to avoid reading<br />
directly from a manuscript.<br />
c. If reference sources are utilized, proper<br />
credit should be given to material directly quoted<br />
from other materials or publications by listing<br />
sources in bibliography attached to a copy<br />
of the speech.<br />
d. Judging will be based on:<br />
i. Organization - 30 points (composition<br />
or choice of material, use of language and<br />
grammar, sentence structure).<br />
ii. Delivery - 35 points (projection and<br />
delivery to audience, fluency or power of<br />
expression, communication, ability and audience<br />
contact).<br />
iii. Content - 35 point (content and<br />
accuracy of subject matter, relevance of topic<br />
to <strong>Suffolk</strong> industry &/or contestant, factual, current<br />
information utilized in developing speech,<br />
etc).<br />
e. Judges will evaluate each speech and<br />
provide written comments.<br />

2 pm Quiz Bowl or 30 min. after completion of showmanship<br />
6 pm Banquet and Awards in the Exhibit Hall Dining Room<br />
Group photo will be during the banquet (wear your t-shirt!)<br />
SUNDAY – July 8<br />

8 am Breeding Ram Sheep Show (Slick, Production, Owned, and<br />
Bred and Owned) followed by Supreme Ram Selection, State Flock,<br />
