Police Response:<br />

• Objective is to engage assailant(s) immediately<br />

• Evacuate victims<br />

• Investigation<br />

Disruptive or Violent Behavior<br />

Any incident in which a person or persons are in danger <strong>of</strong> injuring themselves or others either<br />

intentionally or unintentionally.<br />

• Call for assistance in the immediate area<br />

• Dial 4-2911 and give the exact location and situation<br />

• Speak calmly<br />

• Do not challenge the individual<br />

• Stay out <strong>of</strong> their reach<br />

• Be aware <strong>of</strong> the environment at all times. Keep the area clear <strong>of</strong> items that can be used<br />

as weapons<br />

• When Campus Security arrives, give a brief summary <strong>of</strong> the events<br />

• Clear area <strong>of</strong> visitors or other staff who are not required to assist in the situation<br />

• Assist those injured<br />

Safety Tips<br />

Workplace violence has emerged as an important safety and health issue in today’s workplace.<br />

Watch for Signs That May Be Associated with Impending Violence<br />

• Verbally expressed anger, frustration or threats<br />

• Body language such as a threatening gesture<br />

• Signs <strong>of</strong> alcohol or drug abuse<br />

• Presence <strong>of</strong> weapon<br />

Maintain Behavior That Helps Ease Anger<br />

• Present a calm, caring attitude, speak quietly and do not give orders<br />

• Acknowledge the person’s feelings: “I know you are frustrated.”<br />

• Avoid behavior that may be interpreted as aggressive, i.e., moving rapidly, getting too<br />

close, touching or speaking loudly<br />

Be Alert<br />

• Avoid sitting at the desk with your back to your door<br />

• Evaluate every situation for potentially violent persons<br />

• Be vigilant throughout the encounter<br />

• Do not isolate yourself with potentially violent persons<br />

• Keep an open path for exiting<br />

• Do not let the potentially violent person stand between you and the door<br />

• Report suspicious people to Campus Security at 4-2911<br />

MAJOR MAINTENANCE EMERGENCY<br />

In the event you detect a major maintenance emergency, such as a hazardous gas leak, water<br />

line rupture or electrical failure:<br />

1. Call 4-2911 and report the location and problem.<br />

2. Campus Security will contact the appropriate <strong>of</strong>ficial and determine if the building will<br />

have to be evacuated.<br />

3. In the event the building requires evacuation, proper procedures will be implemented.<br />

Chemical Spill<br />

Contact Campus Security at 4-2911 and provide the following information:<br />

1. The exact location <strong>of</strong> the spill (building and room #):<br />

2. Chemical involved (spell it out if possible):<br />

3. Quantity <strong>of</strong> material:<br />

4. Call-back number where you can be reached.<br />

CAMPUS SECURITY<br />

Campus Security, located in the Eppley Administration Building, Room 100, provides service to<br />

the <strong>University</strong> community 24-hours a day. The number to call for information about any <strong>of</strong> its services<br />

is 554-2648. The duties and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the Campus Security Department are: to protect life<br />

and property; provide building and grounds patrol; enforce Traffic and Parking Rules & Regulations;<br />

enforce Federal and State Laws; investigate criminal <strong>of</strong>fenses; recover stolen property; control the<br />
