12 | April 19, 2018 | The Homer Horizon sound off homerhorizon.com From the Editor Looking at responses in difficult times Thomas Czaja tom@homerhorizon.com When I last wrote in this space, I reflected on our story from two issues ago involving Homer native Danielle Sarna and her sexual abuse allegations made against her former high school teacher. This issue again features two stories that will be difficult to read. The first, on Page 4, involves another Homer native, Bob Krankvich, deciding to speak out with his sexual abuse allegations against the Rev. Richard J. McGrath, the former Providence Catholic High School president. He claims McGrath sexually abused him multiple times in the mid-1990s beginning when he was a freshman and lasting approximately between when he was the ages of 13 through 15. The second story involves the discovery of former Lockport Township High School student Sean Joy’s body in Joliet and severed leg in Lockport. He had been missing since late March, and police continue to try to piece together what may have happened. This story can be read in its entirety on Page 9. Echoing my previous column, this goes to show that things like these, terrible as they are, can happen anywhere, to anyone, at any point. It is important with all three stories not to speculate gossip and let rumors run rampant until more information is learned. I still think what’s important to remember in these difficult times is looking at the responses. Look at the outpouring of love, support and prayers and see the good in humanity. But don’t stop there. Hug your families, your friends and tell them you love them and what they mean to you. Let people know they can confide in you. Tell them you may need to confide in them. Know we can be a community, that we can bond with and be there for someone, even if they are different than us in one way or another. We grow perhaps even more in those instances. We can’t allow the hurt, anger and confusion from these instances to paralyze — instead, we need to be there for all ages and walks of life, including our vulnerable youth. We need to find the inner strength in the worst of times to be the best of ourselves. Simultaneously, we need to know we are not invincible and need our own support systems. Respond to others with love, and if you need help, please reach out and know there is always someone out there who cares. It may not always feel like it, but it’s true.
