Times may be difficult but what a credit to the CPYC membership to be
able to raise this kind of money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help
that all of their
this successful outcome.
October 4, 1960 5:04PM Eastern Electra Crashes at Logan
October 4, 2010 is the 50th anniversary of the crash of the Eastern Airlines Electra
#375 at Logan Airport. The plane plunged into the waters between buoy 2 and 4
near CPYC killing 62 passengers and crew. However were it not for the efforts of
the members of CPYC and citizens of Winthrop, many
more would have succumbed.
To commemorate the crash, Michael Kalafatas has written
Bird Strike: the Crash of the Boston Electra. CPYC is
proud that the author chose CPYC to launch his book on
Sunday, September 19th at 4PM.
Interested members are invited to attend. Kalafatas will
make a presentation and be available to sign books.
Bird Strike, a non-fiction book, is well written, extensively
researched, and insightful. It holds one’s attention
as it is not written in the usual didactic, sterile nonfiction
style. It shows humor and soul while it looks at the conflict
between Man and Bird.
It caught the fabric of the Cottage Park Yacht Club, Winthrop,
its people and the community. Many of the names
appearing in the book are familiar to club and town members, bringing back memories.
As the book progressed away from the crash and the town’s involvement,
Kalafatas extrapolated to present day and the future in a very instructive, and a bit
frightening manner. How the Eastern crash, rescue, and investigation effected the
lives of people involved is remarkable.
This is a book that is important and would be of significance to any person, or town
that is in close proximity to an airport, to the aircraft industry, to the flying public
and to aviation authorities.
Recently retired after 35 years with Brandeis University Admissions, Kalafastas is
now with Admissions Advantage in Weston, MA. He has written How to Make the
Start of the Race
Judy Gaffney and her helper ducklings deserve a lot of
credit for a terrific Duck Regatta. The day dawned with spectacular
weather. The course was set up on the westerly side
of the marina in shifting north to southwest winds and an
outgoing tide which confused a lot of the ducks as they did
not know which way to go. Catching the ducks was a challenge
as many swam under the head pier emerging on the
easterly side. Winners were: 1st place Todd Hughes $500;
2nd place Paul Duval $100; 3rd place Jack Gallagher and
Lauren Kane $50; Lame Duck Mike Carney Lobsters by
Adult Sailing Program 2010
Photos by Dave Pais
Fourteen new and not so new members enjoyed
this year's adult sailing program, held every
Thursday night throughout the summer. The
wind and weather cooperated and provided great
conditions for our sailors. Students were able to
gain experience in a number of boats, including
Rhodes 19's, a Raven, a Whitehall skiff and a
sunfish. We graduated to "big boats" on our last
night, sailing into the sunset and arriving back to
CPYC well into the night. Several students even
got to solo sail by August.
Special thanks to
all who volunteered to instruct
and/or generously
Nine adults squeezed into N-10’s to race
around Snake Island.
After the start, where only one boat was over
the line early, the fleet reached along the
shores of Snake Island before heading upwind
to the Dolphin. The breeze picked up markedly
as the fleet emerged from the shadow of
the island, and the adventures began.
Veteran and experienced sailor Tom Montgomery
Sr. got caught in a puff in route to the
Dolphin, flipping the boat over. Bill Holden
also capsized.
Youth Sailing Tiller Time Racing
This year CPYC Youth Sailing fielded one of its largest Tiller Time regatta fleets. The mini regatta was held on Monday and Tuesday
August 16 th &17 th in the waters off the club and included 22 participants and three different boat sizes. All the boats were started
on one starting line at the same time to give the young sailors a taste of what it is like to be on a real line with only seconds to go
fighting for position and clean wind.
Hurricane Gaston veered away from Mass Bay fortunately. While there were no mandatory orders issued to vacate the Marina, many
occupants played it safe, or practiced going to their moorings. (See picture below on Friday September 3rd.) It is always good to
locate your storm mooring, before you actually need it.
Jan Sheppard, Crisie and
Chris Berg would like to thank
everyone who participated in
the 3 rd Annual Bobby
Sheppard Fishing Tournament
held Sunday August 29 th .
The day was beautiful with 40 adults and children participating in
the tournament. For the first time in 3 years, fish were caught. The
first catch of the day went to a very excited Janet Nalen.
The pot reached $460.00 and this year we had three winners:
1 st Place Paul Nichols 27 1/2 inches $300.00
2 nd Place Michael Giacobbe 27 inches $100.00
3 rd Place Janet Nalen 26 1/2 inches $60.00
This year raised $300.00 which has been donated in Bobby’s name
to CPYC Youth Sailing. A total of $1200.00 has been donated to
CPYC Youth Sailing in Bobby’s name since this tournament
began three years ago.
Jan, Crisie and Chris are humbled by the generosity of
CPYC club members, family and friends and look forward
to seeing everyone next year!
CPYC Wildlife
This beautiful Egret cruising the waters
on the westerly side of the club was
taken before the Ducky Regatta by Tom
McHugh.
No one caught a picture but as the rubber
ducks were released , a sea gull swooped
in targeting the ducks for dinner. He
changed his mind at the last minute and
only a few feet above the ducks, thinking
this would not be a good meal and soared
away.
