18 Perspective By Rajvee Patel As I saw my car approaching, relief flushed throughout my body. I just had a long, hard day at school and the only thing I was looking forward to at that point was food and taking a nap. As soon as the car stopped, I hopped in. “Hey, mom,” I greeted my mother exhaustively. “How was your day at school?” She asked. I’d been trying to get away from thinking about school after this day and what’s the first question she asks me? How school went. “Seriously?” I thought as I replied with a quick “Fine, I guess.” Silence settled inside the car as I watched the road and trees go by. After a few minutes, my mom asked, “Are your grades ok? You seem a little stressed lately.” How does she automatically just assume that because I looked depressed, it’s probably going to have to do with my grades? How does she get there? I don’t understand. More thoughts ran through my mind as I replied with a quick, “No.” This is crazy. All we ever talk about is school. When it’s not school it’s my grades or classes. When it’s not my grades or classes it’s always about school. --- A warm smile spread across my face as I saw my daughter waiting in front of the school patiently. As my car approached, I got a closer look at the expression on her face. She seemed so exhausted. “Hey, mom,” she said. I immediately asked her the one question any responsible parent would first ask their child, “How was your day at school?” I quickly glanced over to see and saw that her face looked annoyed. Really annoyed. “Uh oh,” I thought, “I shouldn’t have asked her that. She’s probably already been through so much at school. She’s probably so tired.” She replied with a quick, “Fine, I guess.” After a few minutes went by, the car started to get unusually quiet. She hasn’t been herself lately, she almost seems...stressed. Maybe it’s about her grades? With a worried look, I asked, “Are your grades ok? You seem a little stressed lately.” She replied with one word, no. “Uh oh, she seems even more annoyed than before. Strike two. I’ll make sure to figure this out when we get home.” --- Recently, I was listening to a Ted Talk that my dad had recommended for me. It was about something called helicopter parenting and I can definitely say that it was probably one of the most relate-able (and helpful) podcasts I’ve listened to. Mountain House Matters! • mhmatters.net April 2018 The speaker, Julie Lythcott-Haims, balanced both a child’s view of his/ her parents and a parent’s view of his/her child throughout the talk. She also tied in relate-able factors from both sides, which made her speech entertaining. But over everything, her message was strong- how to raise successful kids. Obviously, I’m no parent, but what I learned from that podcast is worth sharing. From a parent’s point of view, a child needs to have the right guidance in order to be successful in life. That’s one of the main reasons why many parents tend to involve themselves so deeply into their child’s life as well as try to help manage it - in other words, helicopter parenting. Most parents are constantly asking their children how school went (like in the little scenario above), what grades are looking like, and are always trying to make sure their child is on the right path to achievement. Their children need to have the right scores in the right classes and need to have the right achievements in the right extracurriculars. I don’t blame them. Parents are just trying to help their children because they want us to have a bright future. From a child’s point of view though, parents are almost always either talking about grades or classes or school in general. We want something new, something different. That’s why, in the Ted Talk, Julie brings up one great piece of advice which I think can be useful on both sides. This one tip is that families need to be happy and bond over the good things that have happened to them throughout the day, not what happened during a math test or that one boring meeting at work. When children come home from school, they depend on their parent’s love and pride which has now changed to coming from perfect grades and GPA’s. Instead, it’s helpful to smile and show your child that you care, first - no matter what may have happened at school that day. In kind, children should equally show parents that they care, as well. Chores are something none of us like to do, but these tasks are what actually help us develop life skills and show helpfulness towards our parents as well as around the house. So, next time you’re about to pick your child up from school or you’re about to see your parents after a long day, ask them how their day went and what went so well. Show that you love them for who they truly are.
